Cool open air bar area with live music. The wait/line was brutal, but not because of the kitchen, it was mainly patrons taking a very long time to decide what they wanted (this is an order and sit restaurant, not full service) at the desk instead of preparing. We ordered fish&chips, lobster/crab grilled cheese and lava lava shrimp. The fish and chips were pretty ordinary (but nice chunks of fish), but the latter two were pretty unique and delicious. Both the grilled cheese and shrimp had a nice kick (spicy) and crunchy texture (which I think is super important given softness of crab filling). Ok... I found this place while driving from Paia on our way to Lahaina. Don't judge, the wife was driving. Anyways we were looking for fish and chips. Simple right? Simple was right. These guys over at Down the Hatch couldn't have produced a better meal. The fish and chips were cooked to perfection. The batter crispy and cooked all the way through... no goo. The fish was light, flaky, and flavorful. We also got the shrimp po-boy. I would recommend this to everyone. I couldn't put it down. Came here for a snack to share while enjoying the Maui weather. We decided to try to fish and chips lunch portion and it was about $20. This was the first place I ever had fish and chips that had soft batter fried fish. The batter was way too soft but the fries were well seasoned. The fried fish as a whole was unexpected and sort of a disappointment as I am not used to eating fish and chips with the fish being covered in soft fried batter. I probably wouldn't come back for this dish in particular but I would come back to try something else on the menu. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out ever since they opened. Finally got to eat here and loved it. We stopped by for a mid afternoon noon drink. We got the mai tai, mermaid fries and lava lava shrimp. The shrimp is hands down the best thing we got. I wish we were able to try more things. I was shocked at the location though. We've been to Maui over 10 times, not sure how this was our first time visiting Down the Hatch, but it will not be our last! By far, our favorite meal of this trip! We ordered: -Lave Lava Shrimp for an appetizer- really good! -Coconut Shrimp with the rice and veggies- some of the best coconut shrimp I've ever had! Not too sweet, perfectly crunchy. What really stood out to me was the broccoli...it was the best roasted broccoli I've ever had. I don't know what the season it with but it was delicious! -Chicken and Waffles- so good! Loved that the waffles were smaller in size, but they were light and fluffy on the inside, cooked perfect on the outside. Sauces that came with it were amazing! -Fish and Chips- huge pieces of fish! The coating stayed firm and crispy rather than getting soft, mushy and falling off like so many other fish and chips I've had. Walking past this restaurant, we probably wouldn't have stopped as the location is a little odd. However, it had so many amazing ratings on yelp and was featured on Diners, Drive-in's and Dives. We had a great time! Stopped by here for happy hour. There was some confusion about seating since we just wanted drinks and there was a long line for ordering. I asked a few staff about just bellying up to the bar - one said you had to stand in line to get a seat, the bartenders said we could just sit at the bar. We ended up waiting in line (tourism has recently picked up so policies have changed about seating), but we were treated with a smile. We ended up sitting at the bar and thoroughly entertained by Josh, the bartender. Lots of locals rotated next to us. Great conversations. Great music. Lots of aloha spirit here. Calamari was delish! Love everything about this place!! - excellent food - great atmosphere - reasonably priced - in the centre of the touristy shopping area (enjoyable if you're a tourist which I am) What a chill place to eat! It was a perfect day when I went, perfect for patio eating, which is what this place is! It's located outside in the middle of some shops with tables laid out in different spots, each with umbrellas to temporarily hide from the sun. The best of all was my younger sons roasted pork (kids meal!), it was really flavorful and delicious. We ate here once before on another trip and did a takeout order. This was our first time dining in and when we arrived, we found a longish line. Thirty minutes before we could order, then we were allowed to finally get a table. It took about 45 minutes until we got our food. It was dinner rush, so we expected worst. Three adults ordered drinks, two lava flows and a mai tai. We realized after they were brought to us that something looked off. Tell me why one drink looks like a kid sized cup? Take a look at the photos and tell me what you think... We paid the same price for all, but the portion is clearly not the same. (This is after a few sips when we realized the difference). We asked a server walking by and he apologized and sent us to the bar to ask, where he said they would correct it. When we went to the bar to ask, where we were met with a rather rude and unfriendly bartender who did nothing to help us. Then the food arrived. Pictured is a kid burger and a double scratch burger. We scratched our heads wondering where the rest of the burger patties were. Like I said, tasty food. We enjoyed the fish tacos, lobster grilled cheese, fish and chips, and shrimp po'boy. We were next in line and scouted out a table big enough for our group and sat there as they cleaned it off. A guy came over and said we can't sit here because he has other customers to sit first. No where does it say that we can't sit down first, as some restaurants do in Maui. Not only did one guy come but a second did and asked where our group was in line. Not that I should even have to mention it but my senior mother and mother-in-law can't stand up for long periods of time let alone on a staircase waiting to order so I found it quite rude to ask us to move which we didn't especially when there are a multitude of tables to sit at. I venture to guess Guy Fieri didn't get such lack luster service but God forbid you have someone who had back surgery and can't stand. This is a great place to down the hatch! Great location to get a delicious lunch or dinner, with some music in the background, and an outdoor atmosphere. They have a bar and good happy hour drinks and food specials. You have to walk down the steps nearby the shops to get to the restaurant. They take your order at the counter, give you a number and you seat yourself. We got hooked up with a buy one entree, get a cup of their Lava Lava Shrimp for free coupon. It was so good and spicy! My girlfriend and I got the Lobster and Crab Grilled Cheese Sandwich that came with fries to share. She also got the Lava Flow and I got a Strawberry Pina Colada off of the happy hour menu. The food and drinks were amazing! Probably the best place I dined at in Maui. Food was fresh, the drinks had a good amount of alcohol, and the portion was just right. Writing this review a bit late. My boyfriend and I came here on vacation and it was so good we went back a second time. It was a little strange to me at first because there is no waiter service. You have to order your food and find somewhere to sit (hopefully). Or if you can find a seat at the bar you can order your food there too. First time we went it was incredibly crowded but luckily squeezed in at the bar. The bartender was pretty busy and didn't get to us for awhile then Dave came and introduced himself to us and took our order. He was so genuinely friendly and made waiting for awhile a lot more pleasant. Now for the food. I am not someone who ever really craves fish. But I ordered the fish tacos and they were the best fish tacos I've ever had. I could not wait to have them again. I did order them the second time we went and it was just as amazing as the first time. We also got the lava lava shrimp and they give a very generous amount of shrimp. There is live music in the seating area too. Not sure if it's every day. We honestly came there to watch the baseball game that was on at the bar. We went here a few times just for drinks and every drink was delicious. Whether it was something blended, shaken, or stirred. I also love the tiki glasses they serve them in. The location is great as well. Right off of Front Street in Lahaina. It's a super cute outside bar but the only downside is that it is downstairs so there's not much of a view. The bar area does have TVs so it's def a great place to catch a game and get a drink or just a great bar hop stop. read more
