You order at the counter and then they bring the food to you. I ordered the lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese which was AMAZING. First time having lobster and crab and I certainly fell in love. The lava lava sauce has a little kick to it but totally manageable. I have a really low intolerance to hot and spicy foods and I didn't have a problem. The sweet Hawaiian bread was also out of this world. The restaurant is covered but outside so it can get a little hot and muggy. The tables are a little cramped and it can get a little chaotic at times especially during a dinner rush. The bar is pretty noisy and since it is outdoors, it can be a little hard to hear across the table. However, they also have live music which is pretty good! read more

Came here for dinner on our first night in Maui. We had been told to eat here by friends and the reviews on Yelp proved that this must be a hot spot. However, we weren't really a fan. Perhaps it was because we weren't very hungry, so we shared one lobster and crab grilled cheese. It was good, but nothing amazing. This was a hidden gem for breakfast. To be upfront we discovered this place the evening before when having dinner at a different establishment on Front street. We liked how it had a lower level hidden outdoor sitting. So we gave it a try for breakfast the next day. We were cautiously optimistic because overall reviews but most talked about dinner and their lava tacos. So still unsure how breakfast would fare. It was more than we had hoped for. You pony up to a counter and order there (sage advice- look at menu online or through QR code and then 1 person order and other person grab a table). The line moves quickly and everyone's pleasant. In Covid times you just grab a Kraft of water and bring to your table. Very broad choice of items and unique to other breakfast places. I went with the Lava shrimp omelet with fresh avocado. My wife had the Ahi Benny. Both with home fries although their are other side options. We split a side of Portuguese sausage. The food was delicious. The shrimp crisp, with a delicious sauce that had a kick but not overwhelming heat. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned and cooked (crisp outside soft inside). The Ahi Benedict had a nice wasabi undertone with a poached egg that broke perfectly. And all cost under $40 which in Maui is a bargain. Decided to order takeout last night and called and put in our order. When we went to pick it up we were dismayed to see so many people on Front Street Lahaina, and in DTH walking around without a mask. We have a mandatory mask order in HI! With such limited hospital beds/ventilators we cannot afford spread in our community so it was disappointing to say the least :( We won't be back during the pandemic now which is a great pity as their food is great. Food wise, the Lava Lava shrimp was fantastic as usual with their spicy house sauce, although it wasn't served on a bed of lettuce in their takeout version compared to their eat in version. The spicy chicken sandwich was a big portion, juicy and full of lava lava sauce too, served on huge wedges of soft sweet bread. The Pig Plate was a decent sized helping, with rice and salad. It was also juicy and tender and well flavoured. The stars are for the food, the lack of stars are for the lack of masks being worn by customers when walking around the restaurant. read more

If you are in the area you absolutely need to go to down the hatch. The line to order was long but the staff moved through it relatively quickly which was a nice surprise. And the rest of the experience quickly revealed why the line was this way! The food was out of this world! The chicken and waffles was probably the best that I have ever had. The po boy had the perfect consistency of the shrimp (a lot of places tend to over bread/over fry them). I've spent some time in New Orleans and while nothing beats an original po boy, this was certainly up to par. The sampler platter had some delectable bites of pork quesadilla which was loaded to the max of yummy flavor. Not only is the food delicious, but it is paired with a pretty view, yummy drinks (try the strawberry smoothie!), and very polite staff who were very on top of getting us water or anything we needed. The great thing is that you pay up front, so once you're done with your food you can just walk right out! I noticed their breakfast menu includes pork eggs Benedict and banana bread French toast, so I will most definitely be returning here later on our vacation. If you're in Maui, I highly recommend down the hatch for breakfast or dinner (or both!) Update: breakfast is just as delicious! The eggs Benedict with pork belly was really tasty and the Hollandaise sauce was not overwhelming. We came by late dinner hours on a Wednesday because very few other places nearby were still open. Doing so was actually the move though - there was no wait and virtually no one else there, which was our preference for a nicer dinner (we're aware it's usually much busier and more lively). Ordering at the front was pretty intuitive and the staff were very helpful in recommending some options (particularly for my friend, who is vegetarian). Seating was also open, so it was great that we could pick where we sat. While the food is more on the pricey side, I thoroughly enjoyed the Lobster & Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese. The seafood inside was very fresh and tasted great, and the bums weren't soggy or too dry - they had just the right amount of saturation. This food does sit more heavy; I was only able to eat half the sandwich before getting full and took the other half home. But the meal itself was very satisfying; the staff were also very accommodating in checking in on us. Overall, a great and delicious experience. Come during late night hours for a more quiet experience. Would gladly come back if we're in the area! I really wanted to like this place because of its 4.5 stars rating. However, my experience wasn't great. 1) my Açaí N' Da coconut cocktail didn't taste like Açaí and coconut at all. I looked at some Yelp photos and realized that they didn't put sufficient Açaí sauce in my drink. 2) Macadamia Nut crushed Mahi wasn't tasty. I had to ask for salt, and hot sauce to spice it up. I later realized they supposed to bring lemon buerre blanc sauce with my dish but they didn't. I don't know what the problem was but I hope the restaurant management investigates and ensures to provide good and consistent experience for all guests. They were beer battered well and were so tender. The fries were shoestring and were very tasty, and they give you a good amount. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the use of sweet relish in your tartar sauce. This is incorrect. The fish tacos featured mahi that can come grilled or fried. I chose to get one grilled and one blackened. They came with a refreshing mango salsa and lava lava sauce which is tasty. Substituted the chips and salsa for some mermaid fries. The mermaid fries are shoestring with bacon, ranch, lava lava sauce, green onions, and a cheese sauce. You need them in your life! Seriously! The food was great and the customer service is superior as well. No wonder this place does so good of business. The were featured on Triple D, but they don't rely on that fame for business. First thing first. The happy hour is 2-6pm. Let that sink in for a moment. In Hawaii, football games start a lot earlier than on the mainland so you can eat delicious snacks and drink $5 mai-tais for multiple games if you choose. The food is beautiful and tastes as good as it looks. Watching things pass by us over and over that looked so good made us almost cancel dinner plans to just stay there all day. It is a tucked away little place with maybe 20 tables, all outdoor seating, a small little bar and live music. It is worth a stop no matter where you may be if you're on the west coast of the island. You walk down the stairs and order right away and then take your number to your table. They will bring you your food and drinks pretty quickly. You can also grab one of the 10 or so seats at the bar and they will serve you right there as well. The happy hour prices are amazing but it never hurts to check what is on happy hour or you may still get stuck with a full priced drink if you pick something you happen to like and hope is discounted. Located in the lower level of a little complex not far from the Banyan tree, this small open air spot is a gem. As a reminder-no table service. Order and pay at the small store front from the nice menu of tacos, salads and sandwiches and more. Collect your number, find a seat at a table or the bar and they will bring the food to you when it's ready. On this visit we were looking for lunch and both enjoyed the wonderfully flavor tacos with tangy mango salsa and a slightly spicy cream on top.
