Great place for late evening eats and a cool place to hang out with friends. Most nights when we passed by there was a live band, so it also has great entertainment. You order your food at the counter and then find a place to sit. Servers will then bring your orders to your table. During our visit we ordered the fish and chips and lava shrimp. I was hearing and seeing a lot of good things about Down The Hatch. Sure it's located in one of the most touristy spots on Maui (Front Street), but locals, don't let that deter you. They are located at the Lahaina Wharf Cinema Center right dab in the heart of it all. They're also probably the most happening business in the building with their various weekly events that include Sunday trivia nights, $5 Tuesdays, Wedneday Wine Tasting, Saturday DJ & Special Events, everyday happy hour from 2:00 to 6:00 pm and live music throughout the day. Check their website or follow their social media for weekly schedules! So the seafood restaurant(ish) & bar just opened 3 years ago, but they're already quite a popular spot. They even got the nod from Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives, host Guy Fieri after being featured on the show. It was a while back, but the day we came in, I didn't really have solid plans on coming here. Just so happened my husband saw the sign and the menu outside. I explained what it was, what I've heard and he said it sounded pretty good. Sweet! Do note, the place is set up as a quick-service type restaurant with a bar meaning, you order and pay at the counter, then restaurant attendants deliver the food to you. After you pay, you get yourself set up with napkins and utensils and find yourself a table (if there's space). Yep, not your traditional restaurant set-up and more like fast food, but better. I already knew what I wanted from the get go -- the Lobster & Crab Grilled Cheese. I mean the name alone... How can you go wrong, am i rite? It's damn pricey, but damn is it good! That sucker is the perfect balance of crab, lobster, cheese goodness and I could not get enough of it! The shoe string fries that it came with were also absolutely delish! My husband got the Shrimp Po'Boy and the bites that I took of it were amaaazing. Yum! Seems like they use the same shrimp & sauce as the Lava Lava Shrimp which I hear is quite tasty too. At the time, they had a check-in offer of 20% off so that helped shave off a few $$$. You also get an additional discount at their sister store right next door at Breakwall Shave ice if you're feeling like boozey shave ice or acaì bowls. Which we were (check my review on them!). I told them to forego the Holendaise sauce and I ordered an extra serving of their house salsa. Perfect. My sweety wasn't in the mood for a heavy breakfast so she ordered waffles and an egg with some fresh friut. They accommodated her simple but specific request. I asked her if she had any input, but it was too early and she had not had her coffee yet. Which brings me to the coffee... It was okay, not great. Keep in mind I am a snob with coffee. We had to wait about 20 minutes for our group of four to be seated, but food and drink service was very fast once we sat down, and it was well worth it. Longest happy hour indeed from 2-6pm daily. Great casual outdoor environment with live music. After a while, most Maui seafood places start sounding generic, but the menu here is different. This is my favorite restaurant in Maui, and yes, I like it better than Mama's Fish House! I mean, I should always know to trust Guy Fieri. The first time we came was for happy hour. We washed all this food down with the sunrise mimosas (tropical fruit juice with vodka). Don't let the $10 price tag fool you, these are STRONG. Unsurprisingly, we got two pitchers. And as I was eating my own food, I couldn't help but notice the other dishes that other customers were getting around me, like a fried whole fish and a giant ahi tuna sandwich. You can order food from either the food stall on the right, or the bar in the left. They give you a number and bring your food out when ready. On Sunday evenings they have live music as well. We had a really difficult time choosing which drinks we wanted, especially with happy hour. If you can only eat one thing, it has to be something with the lava shrimp.
