This place was awesome! The live music and the atmosphere were fantastic and we had a great time. The food was pretty good. My brother got the crab and lobster grilled cheese and absolutely inhaled it. My sister got the mermaid tenders which were smothered in an addicting home made cheese sauce. And my cousin got the chicken and waffles which was a mountain of fried chicken, sugary waffles, and savory gravy. Those were the standouts at the table. I got the poke special which is technically an appetizer, but pretty tasty nonetheless. Our cocktails were delicious. I personally think the atmosphere gave this restaurant more points than the food, but definitely worth the visit. read more

Awesome happy hour spot! We got the pina colada, Mai tai, and lava flow $7 cocktails. So yummy! The place was filled with tourists and it's on Front St. with plenty of shops to visit after. The bar was pretty busy but you can snag a seat at the long table in front of the bar. They had a live musician playing on his guitar. It was a great spot for a quick drink. read more

Wow, rude. Monday evening, about 7pm. My partner and I were in line when a hostess grabbed us saying she can seat us at the bar immediately. We followed her and she sat us at the end of a high table right by the bar and told us we can place orders at the bar. Once we made our selections, my partner went over to the bar to place the order just as directed. But the bartender told him we cannot do that- and that we are not supposed to be sitting where we were. He explained that the hostess told us to sit there and instructed us to place orders when ready. The bartender said, "that wouldn't have happened. We don't have hosts." Absolutely confused we pointed out the girl, who we thought was the hostess, and explained once more that she led us from the line, sat us at the high table near the bar, and told us to place orders at the bar and eat at the high table. The bartender looked at us with a scowl and said, "she wouldn't have said that." So.. we lied? Just to order some fish tacos..? The bartender left us at that point and went to talk to the "hostess" we pointed out. The bartender explained to her what we said and the "hostess" denied any of it. Then another couple seated at the bar tapped us and said that the same girl told them the exact same thing earlier. read more

First place we went to upon our arrival to Maui and it did not disappoint. This place has great hh deals on drinks and appetizers. We ordered the lava lava shrimp based on good reviews but didn't really enjoy it as much due to the excessive amount of sauce. Nice vibe and enjoyed the live music. read more

The lobster and crab grilled cheese is TO DIE FOR! I vacation in Maui a lot and it was my first time eating at down the hatch after I watched Guy Furry review their food. In a hurry to decide? Here you go- Great place during happy hour. $5 cocktails and pretty strong ones at that. Highly recommend :) Good location, good vibe, sad burger, great poke and fries, good not great lava lava shrimp! We tried the mai tais, lava flow, and pina colada. Lava flow was too strawberry-ish for me otherwise great. Thee couldn't have been a better happy hour :) Live music and open seating adds to the madness. Service is great. They keep cleaning the tables. Bringing food. Speaking of food, PLEASE try the poke. Delicious is an understatement. It's all the right flavors! The lava lava shrimp was free for us because we had a coupon. Honestly I was hoping for more spice and heat. It was there just dumbed down by mayo. But a decent amount of shrimp. There is a fair amount of parking all around in free street parking and paid hourly lots, but there is a free 3 hour lot 2 blocks away from this place. Although the food is a bit pricey, it is scrumptious! Happy Hour is everyday, 2-6 PM, 20% off all appetizers and drinks are $9-$12. They also coordinate with Breakwall Shaved Ice. Everyone must try to Lava Lava Shrimp! It's a delicious blend of spicy mayo and perfectly cooked shrimp. The Macadamia Nut Mahi Plate is also good! Cashier was super nice and helpful but other servers couldn't care less. read more

This place has a unique style of service. You order at the hostess area, including drinks, then you are given a placard and find a seat , then you get your drink /meal brought to you. I ordered the sampler platter-- it was too much for one, but I like variety. It was shrimp, calamari, and pulled pork quesadillas. The cocktail was a fruity martini. All were good. But I was sitting at the bar and the bar stools were pretty uncomfortable w no foot or back rest. ESP for a a 5"4' person. That's an annoyance of back and leg strain. The only other options were large tables and I didn't want to take those from the bigger parties. Also to note--I could have skipped the line of ordering and gone directly to bar as others ordered food from bar. Oh well. Live n learn. 1 star off for really uncomfortable bar stools. read more

You must come to Down the Hatch for the "longest happy hour in Lahaina." It's daily from 2-6pm and they offer 20% off on all appetizers! I've come across this place multiple off of yelp and so glad that we came! We wanted to order a couple of appetizers and a main dish. I knew to order the lobster grilled cheese and lava lava shrimp from the photos and we were not disappointed! The drink selection during happy hour is great and the 20% off appetizers makes this a great spot for friends to hang out and enjoys small dishes together. Definitely a to go spot after laying out on the sun all afternoon. Better yet, the happy hour starts earlier and ends later than any other place in Lahaina. Recommendations: Know what to order before you come as you order and then sit down! We took our time ordering and held up the line. The lobster grilled cheese is a bit pricey but where else can you get a lobster grilled cheese this good? read more

The breakfast burrito in itself was worthy enough for a return to this place! The lava sauce was that extra kick of flavor that made it easily my favorite thing we ordered off the menu. Fried rice is 100% worth the upgrade. Loved the presentation of all the dishes. We really enjoyed everything we ordered. Service was good. Set up is very spread out, a bit confusing if you've never been here. Once you figure it out, you get in line at the register, order, & seat yourself. Line moves fast. They don't take AMX. We waited in a 30 minute line to then wait over an hour for mediocre food. I personally ordered the chicken tacos, which had little to no taste. They drizzled barely any sauce on it and tasted very bland, not to mention I bit into a very hard long bone. My mom ordered the Mahi mahi tacos and immediately regretted it. She said it tasted super fishy but didn't know what to do about it considering how long we had just waited for our order. 3 other people from my group got the chicken sand-which. All complained that it was cold and dry and had barely any sauce, such as the pictures advertised. We felt it had been sitting out for awhile. We all left disappointed and unsatisfied. Arrived around 6:30pm, waited 15 minutes to order. After ordering, got a number and waited 30 minutes before the food came out. Ordered the fried whole fish, which was amazing. Lava lava shrimp was a great starter also. Tried the fresh catch platter, it was mahi mahi. Totally worth the wait. Ambiance is very relaxed, casual and fun. Upon walking up to the location you'll see the wood sign for "Down the Hatch" near a stairway leading down into the actual outdoor restaurant and bar area. The seating is first come, first serve; saving tables is allowed however. The atmosphere is an expected hum of hustling employees, cheerful patrons, and yet somehow peaceful when sitting next to the koi pond, which is imbedded into the seating area. Once in line you'll order and pay for your selections, which are bought out to your preferred table by a numbered placard you are given. The menu has many delicious sounding appetizers, entrees, and drinks to choose from. They even have virgin versions to enjoy. I ordered the mermaid fries with pork belly, and the local fish tacos with avocado and corn tortillas ($2 up charge). It was way more food than expected! The fries were seasoned and fried to perfect. The pork belly was flavorful, tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The local fish tacos had a simple mango slaw, fresh local white fish cooked wonderful to where it just flaked apart with every bite. Absolutely a must when visiting Maui!! read more

Home of the thee 3 best drinks on the island! Painkiller, Mai Tai, and Pina Colada (left to right). Center outside in a nice little outdoor shopping center and surrounded by a koi fish pond. Music is more like the party party vibe and they poor heavy. A great place to start the day. My favorite was actually the tub fish melt. It's day 6 in Maui for me and it was easily one of the best meals. read more

It was a no-brainer to start our Maui food adventure at Down the Hatch! We had a coupon for a free Lava Lava Shrimp appetizer (w/paid entree), plus they boast the longest happy hour on the island, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Order and pay for your food at the counter, grab a table, then wait for your food to arrive! While you wait, you can watch your favorite sports teams on the three giant TV screens above the bar or you can enjoy the musical stylings of a fantastic local musican. Look, I don't usually eat shellfish, but it was so visually beautiful and eye-candy appealing that after one bite of this luscious shrimp appetizer, I was hooked! I am amazed at the 5 star reviews of this place about food, ambience and everything else! We ordered fish and shrimp tacos that came with chips and salsa. Salsa was store bought and not authentic. This place was incredible. Probably our top restaurant on Maui. A little inconspicuous to find. You walk down some stairs and order at a counter and they bring your food to you. Or you skip the line and go sit at the bar and order food there! We got the pork plate and fish and it was incredible! Mai tai and Pina Colada were both great. Went here for lunch with 6 friends. You order at counter and they deliver the food to table quickly because they have 2 kitchens. I had the ahi ahi tacos and my husband had the poke of the day. When we got to the restaurant at 7:15pm on a Saturday, the wait to get your food was 1hr. We still decided to stay because we didn't have a backup plan. They also were sold out of about 4 dishes including their strawberry salad. We ordered the spicy Caesar salad, lava lava shrimp, crispy calamari & 3 lobster & crab stuffed grilled cheese. Our appetizers & salad came out exactly at 1hr. Then after additional 15 minutes 2 grilled cheese made it to our table and the 3rd one not until another 15 minutes. 1hr & 30 minutes is how long we waited for our food. In my opinion, servers should have the common sense to check if we got everything we ordered so if we didn't, they could look into it and let us feel like they care. Waited over an hour to receive our meal here. This was after waiting forty-five minutes in line to even place an order and be seated. After sitting patiently for our meal, it came and was unremarkably basic. Overall, we felt robbed of our time for a meal we could probably get at several different places for a fraction of the time. I found it extremely hard to get to this location with a stroller and a baby. Maybe there is somewhere with a ramp but I couldn't find one. It took us carrying our stroller up the stairs to get to the elevators. This place is very lively and busy! Literally everything on the menu sounds amazing: the lava lava shrimp, tenders, all the appetizers, quesadillas, and more. We went with the fish and chips and the lava lava shrimp tacos. They were amazing. The shrimp tacos had my mouth watering. I would order those again in a heart beat! read more

We ate here twice during our stay in Lahaina and both times this place was great. First night, we ate the poke special, fish tacos, and crab and lobster grilled cheese. I also got a beer and drank 2 Lilikoi margs, which was one of the best margaritas I've ever had. Second night, we got the poke again (so good!), shrimp tacos, and the local fish sandwich. Happy energetic seafood restaurant vibe. The Piña Coladas were as delicious as they were strong. It hit us as fast and as hard as the waves from Big Beach. I highly recommend ordering the Sampler Platter if it's your first time there. You get to try their main specialties in manageable portions. The Lava shrimp was sweet and crunchy, the kalua pig quesadillas were a great introduction to delicious Hawaiian-style pork, and the crispy calamari was just a joy to eat. Wife and I had dinner here. Atmosphere was really cool. Service was fast. Dave I know you reply to all your reviews. Added a 3rd star for that. The food wasn't so good. Sorry! Poki cup was really hot (maybe from the rice) so it made the tuna warmish and wasn't my thing. Lobster and crab grilled cheese had way too much mayo and I didn't see any lobster. Would have paid more for the lobster to be evident on this dish. Seems like a great place to come chill and drink. But the food wasn't the best. read more

Went here for both Happy Hour and Brunch! Happy hour wasn't too bad. Still a tad pricey but we enjoyed our Mermaid Fries, Coconut Shrimp, Ahi Poke Special, and Mango Daiquiri. The fries were good until they became too much! A huge carbs load. The coconut shrimp was great though! The Ahi Poke Special wasn't anything too unique and a tad pricey. But man oh man brunch was delicious! We had the Southern Style Chicken Benny, Spinach Avocado Benny, and Banana Bread Mini French Toast with Lilikoi Cream Cheese. It was all so very good! Pretty unique spot over on front street. Order at the counter - find a seat and the food will be delivered to your table (took 25 mins for our food to arrive but it arrived fresh / hot). I had the crispy lava lava shrimp tacos which comes with chips and salsa and my wife had the crispy spicy chicken sandwich which is served on Hawaiian sweet bread and comes with fries. Both were tasty and came in pretty generous size portions. If you're curious the lava sauce is a mix of sweet Thai chili, Saracha, and mayo. Our niece and nephew had the popcorn shrimp and fish and chips from the kids menu. These came with a fountain drink and also a coin for a snow cone once they were done eating. Established in 2015.

Established in September 2015, Down the Hatch was started by three childhood friends from Georgia. Javier Barberi, Dave Fincher and Julian Bonfardin studied hospitality management in college and moved to Maui after graduation. They worked in different areas of the service industry for several years before launching out on their own. They wanted a restaurant/bar catering to the community and guests of the beautiful island of Maui - and Down The Hatch was born.

Meet the Business Owner: Javier Julian Dave B.

Javier, Dave and Julian started Down the Hatch in September 2015. These three have known each other since they were 7 years old in Georgia. Having worked in restaurants since they were teens, they decided to open one on their own and now they are living their dream. The Hawaiian humidity was unavoidable, and it made the dining experience uncomfortable. If only the seating arrangement was more spacious, it would have alleviated the issue. The cramped seating detracted from the overall enjoyment, and it felt a bit suffocating. Additionally, the presence of a koi fish river or pond seemed like a charming touch initially. Unfortunately, it attracted mosquitos, making the outdoor seating area a haven for these bothersome insects. It would have been much better if measures were taken to address this issue. Another aspect that made me uncomfortable was observing the bigger fish devouring the smaller ones in the pond. It was a bit off-putting and affected my appetite. While some may find it interesting, it personally detracted from my dining experience. In conclusion, "Down the Hatch" offers great food, but the seating arrangement and the mosquito problem in the outdoor area take away from its potential. If they could improve these aspects, it could become an outstanding restaurant that fully lives up to its culinary offerings. However if these things don't bother you, then you should defiantly check out this spot! read more

I have been coming to Down the Hatch since the doors were opened in 2015. The diversity in services is by far unmatched by any other operation on the island. The breakfast options are by far the best around leaving no exception for lunch and diner as well. And an occasional late-night cocktail with live music, live D.J is always a fun way to share the local community vibe and an environment that totally brings the Aloha. And the professionalism Dave Fincher and his staff brings should not be overlooked. I feel safe bringing my wife, friends, and family without any worries. Really the most fun with the utmost attention to responsible behavior from both sides of the bar. Totally a true class act from every aspect. While during the shut down of most of Maui, we are very grateful for Down the Hatch being open and especially grateful for the Lobster and crab grilled cheese. read more

We were in Maui in January 2018 to see whales ... and did we see whales! We made it back to Maui this September for our wedding anniversary (43rd). In both visits, we came to Down the Hatch (twice this latest trip!). Low prices on happy hour drinks ... and good long hh hours, 2-6! Great tasting Lava Lava shrimp appetizer, with 20% discounts on some menu items during happy hour. It's a great place to visit, especially after flying in that day. While it may be 4pm HST, flying in from CA means it's 7pm and HUNGRY. Happy hour = dinner time for us! Nothing wrong with saving a few bucks dining in HI. DTH has become one of our GOTOs whenever we come to Maui, which has been every 8 months for the past 4 years. read more

Hippest new spot in Lahaina! Pumped to find this place, went many times, and it always delivered. Fish tacos, Lobster Grilled Cheese (are you kidding me?! So good!), Fresh Fish... the food is great & at a good price. Can't beat the friendly service, the staff is so cool & fun. It's a laid back place, and I felt comfortable, relaxed and welcome. Try the Maui Sour cocktail or maybe the Lilikoi Martini, great mixed cocktails. Go on Saturday if you can!!! Flip night is a great opportunity to save some cash... go to pay your tab, flip a coin, call heads or tails... get it right, get 50% off your tab... if not, just pay your tab. Such a clever idea. Was in Lahaina for a week and wanted casual, so stopped in off reviews on Yelp and was delighted... Ordered at the food counter and had the fish tacos. On recommendation, tried one of each (fried and broiled) which were fantastic! Since DTH is on Front St. across from the Banyans, there's the family, day crowd coming in to grab a bite or a cool one, (try the shave ice...) then at night, there's a younger vibe with a lot of locals and a great party atmosphere. Best new bar/restaurant on Maui! An absolute must for locals and visitors alike. Prime central location across from the Banyan Tree and Lahaina Harbor, open-air, relaxed atmosphere and dynamite food and drinks. The staff is incredibly welcoming and makes you feel like you belong. Stop by for a mid-day drink and people-watching on Front Street, grab lunch before a boat ride, enjoy a casual dinner or make new friends at the bar for late-night drinks. My wife and I went to this place last October for our honey moon, and are we glad we did! It's somewhat tucked down on Front street in the middle of this little plaza area. They have fantastic drinks, but the Lava Shrimp appetizer was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has a good tangy flavor to it and they don't skimp on the portions. This place was pretty bad compared to other restaurants on Front St. It actually sits below Front St. in a Mall that houses a movie theater. The seating area is really dirty, hot and uncomfortable. The staff was nice enough but for the prices you should get a cold beer not a warm beer. The biggest problem we had was the food, our entree's were pretty bad (dried pork on tacos), no lobster on grilled cheese and cold fries. The staff was trying but things just took forever. read more

Very quite atmosphere, excellent food, and their shave ice place is in the same building which makes for the perfect dessert. tried the triple D featured lobster grilled cheese and it was decent, but so much sauce and cheese you couldn't taste the lobster or crab. While eating it I was wishing I had the chicken tacos because they were to die for, and so beautiful on the plate. Mahi sandwich is also tasty, messy, but so tasty. read more

We came back to Maui for our honeymoon which meant we had to hit up DTH once more! We were just as happy as we were last time. We ate more of the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese and then we tried some new dishes. We tried both the Mermaid Fries and Mermaid Tenders. We also tried their quesadilla. We are near the end of our trip on Maui and I wish we had known about this place earlier. The food is great, service is great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh fish on the island. It's ok. Nothing special. Kinda expensive for what you get. Lava shrimp was good but sat on a lot of cabbage and was kinda of mushy. Taco was plain but surprisingly filling because of the chips on the side. Grilled lobster and crab was ok. Not too much meat inside . Tasted similar to a crab cake in a grilled cheese .
