Order at the counter joint with something on the menu for just about everyone. The keiki kids menu had a solidly good quesadilla with tons of cheese (my daughter said cheddar jack) on a large flour gluteny tortilla and served with shoestring slightly seasoned fries, fountain drink, toy (wiki sticks). I enjoyed a Buddha bowl that was pretty clean and simple (much needed after all the fried food I've had this trip)- broccoli, sweet potato, carrots, black beans, avocado, and I asked for white rice on the side (if you or in my case, your kid who will get your white rice dont like furukake seasoning, ask for it without). The fish tacos my husband got were just ok but he found the American cheese on them kind of weird. My nieces loved their rice and veggies plate. Solid choice and cafeteria seating adjacent a fish pond with large koi and turtles, which was good entertainment for kids while adults finished eating. Clean bathroom at the shaved ice joint (also owned by this company) next door. read more

This place deff blew our minds. The service was quick, easy and professional. The menu had plenty of options but not too many and was straight forward. Prices were very good considering the quality and amont of food. We had the Mahi Mahi local fish tacos with added Avocado and the mermaid fries with the added pulled pork. Both of these were to die for. The flavor profile was more than to boast about. The size of the fish tacos were larger than what you would normally see and the quality and way the Mahi Mahi was cooked. These were some of the best fish tacos we've ever had. With all of the hype surrounding DTH. I was excited to visit. My expectations were high because of the reviews. The food was just- BLEH. I honestly don't know if I went to a different place then all these people are describing or we just have MUCH different taste buds. Coming in with an empty stomach and high expectations.. DTH Maui is in an open outdoor area. You can walk down the steps to order at the counter, find seating, and they'll bring your food to you when it's ready! They have a nice koi pond outside. There's clean restrooms. It's great if you want something quick and easy. Their pricing is good. The drinks are pretty strong and double the size I'd expected! POG Foam Mai Tai - the rum was very present in this drink haha. Lilikoi margarita - just ok. I wasn't too impressed with their food though... - I had the macadamia nut crusted mahi - there wasn't enough flavor in the fish. The furikake rice was just ok. The highlight was actually the mango salsa. - T's Local Fish sandwich had the opposite problem - they put on too much tartar sauce, so it was too flavorful. I was definitely turned off by the person taking orders. He came off quite arrogant when I said I was trying to choose between two drinks. He basically said everything's good, we have a line out the door for a reason. Thanks for nothing? In short, ambience, setup, and price are 5 stars, service / friendliness plus taste of food is not that great. read more

Nice cute place with outdoor seating surrounding a koi pond. The food is pretty good too.The kids meal provide large portions and dole whip ice cream after. The kids enjoy their fish and chips. I had the po boy sandwich. It was tasty but over sauced with their spicey sauce so the bread got a bit soggy and broke down. My guests had the pork plate and they said it's the best they've had on the island. read more

I absolutely love this place so much. It's a bit of a hidden gem if you don't know where to look for it, because it's actually downstairs in a casual open bar type of setting. The food is near perfect! I ordered the lava lava shrimp tacos and my mouth was bursting with flavor. Fiancé got the fish tacos which were amazing as well. This is definitely the best shrimp taco in West Maui, no doubt! Order that, the lava flow or one of their fabulous beers on tap, find a seat and relax for awhile. I was completely fooled by all the hype around this place. First, be prepared to wait in the sun for 35 minutes in a line going down some stairs. Once you're down there - you begin your order. You get a number and place it on your table. Maybe it's just me and my party - but the food was incredibly mediocre to each one of us. I will say the seasoned fries were very good. But my goodness - the experience as a whole was completely overrated and I personally wouldn't visit again. I cannot leave this review without warning you about their chips and salsa. It's the most bizarre chips flavor and some salsa out of a jar and I can't be convinced otherwise. They're hanging on to the TV show exposure because there isn't a reason to visit here otherwise. Delicious, gigantic fish tacos. If you grew up loving watermelon jolly ranchers make sure you order the fresh watermelon lemonade! It can be a loud setting but it's definitely a happy vibe so go when you are in the mood to be out in the mix of things. Sorry, no photos to share. Went here because it was featured on DDD. The location itself is convenient because it is off of Front street, a popular tourist attraction. The location is casual and has individual tables and family style tables, in addition to bar tables. The food...the stuff that really matters, well.... I found it to be just ok. Maybe I set my standards too high because of the expression Guy Fierri had on his face when he bit into the crab and lobster grilled cheese sandwich? I don't know. It looked better than it tasted. I remember this place being more magical pre-pandemic (I went in Nov 2020). Drinks were in cute cups, and they really tried on their presentation. Each dish was definitely Instagrammable! This is an awesome option for grabbing drinks and some food in the Lahaina area though! It's in the middle of a bunch of souvenir shops and a shaved ice spot, so that's convenient! I returned in May 2022 and the presentation of food wasn't as impressive, servings were definitely smaller than I remembered, but drinks were just as strong (but not in a cute cup :( ). Tried the appetizer sampler platter, the catch of the day plate (fish serving was small) and lobster grilled cheese (very oily). Next time I'd probably come back here for a quick drink if I'm walking around Lahaina. read more

I highly recommend coming here for happy hour so you can try a greater variety for a reasonable price. We had the ahi nachos (daily special) and lobster grilled cheese. Both tasted as beautiful as they looked. The ambiance was really fun too - of course it is Hawaii but the live singer that day was amazing and really got the crowd going. read more

This is a really cool place with the outdoor mall seating. The chicken tacos are out of this world! The pineapple mango salsa really put it over the top. The chicken was moiste and marinated great. Flavor popping out of both sides of these tacos. The chips and salsa was a nice side dish too. The ahi tacos were also good but more subdued flavor. Fresh tasting. The lava shrimp app was ok but not for my taste. The lava sauce was too much for me since I dont like mayo and there was so much of it everywhere. Their banana bread was good but tasted mostly like everyone else's. They had some kind of creme cheese mixed in but it wasnt prevalent. read more

It was super busy, long line. By the time we ordered, it took a good 45mins to get our food.... If not longer. Luckily they had a small band & they were doing karaoke, so that kept us entertained. This is my third trip to Maui and I always have to hit up Down The Hatch. The service, food, and staff is always amazing. They had someone singing during breakfast and he was amazing. The last time I was here I probably hit this place up at lease 8 times in a two week span. Yea the food is that good! I got the fried rice plate which was amazing! Great spot in Laihana for drinks and food especially during Happy Hour. The kitchen is also open late for late night munchies. Lava Lava Shrimp - Crispy fried shrimp with delicious Lava Lava sauce. It's got a light kick to it. These are good on anything. By themselves, on a taco, or in a po boy. Kalua pig quesadilla - The pork was so juicy and delicious. I just came from a luau and this was light years better than what I had. Of course, this is topped with Lava Lava sauce. I could probably take shots of the sauce. Drinks - I just had mai tais since they were on happy hour. Drinks are for a good price during HH. Live DJ is always a bonus. read more

We kinda stumbled upon Down the Hatch as it's the ground floor courtyard in a little outdoor shopping area. You order by the window just as you go down a couple steps and then they'll bring food out to wherever you're seated based on table number. Service was friendly and helpful. I got the breakfast burrito which was awesome. It had some pulled pork, bacon, peppers, onions, and scrambled eggs. The whole thing came together super well and it had a ton of great flavour. I topped it off with a bit of sriracha as they had hot sauces lying around near the kitchen area as well. My wife got a benedict that she really liked too. It was a ton of food and though the price initially seemed a bit high, it was worth it given how much food we got and how tasty it all was. read more

Great food, service, atmosphere, and priced right! What more could you ask for? I had the macadamia-crusted Mahi Mahi, Coconut fried shrimp with a great salad, and one night and a whole fried fish. Both meals were phenomenal! They have live entertainment every night we were there at just before 8 pm when they start so that was a bonus! Very talented live Karaoke one night. Here's what I have to say. Apparently, this has something to do with people choosing this place to eat. It's super cool honestly. DTH is a staple in the front street circuit. I brought my girlfriends here for a birthday pupu disaster. We had a few drinks to start and when we arrived we expected excellent service. Yes. Service is phenomenal. The people working here are a reason to return. However, I was raised in China. Asian culture is emphasized on the menu. Provide chopsticks. Having been a waitress, bartender, and restaurant manager I would say that the service here is 10/10. Maybe even 11/10. The chopsticks supply needs to be recognized !! Bring em back!! Rio was the best bartender we could've asked for. He helped commemorate the birthday of my friend. Let's celebrate the good times and not the bad. The things that went right at DTH are outweighing the chopstick conundrum. I love you DTH and can't wait to come back. To you tourists, Come on check it out. Awesome breakfast/brunch menu! We had the chicken and waffles and French toast tower. They were both really good! Chicken and waffles -- chicken was fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and moist inside. It wasn't greasy. Served with a trio -- lava sauce (it wasn't too spicy), ranch dressing, and house made biscuit gravy (yummy!). I liked the lava sauce and gravy. The waffles were ~3" in diameter, and also cooked to perfection. Presentation was impressive (see picture). French toast tower -- I would guess this is every kid's delight! Strips of French toast served with mixed fresh fruit (berries, strawberries, bananas) and topped with....ICE CREAM! It was a hit for all of us! Great outdoor dining area with live entertainment. read more

Trash. No seriously, it's a tourist trap that I am assuming stays popular because of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Go for a drink at the bar or the atmosphere if you're a young kid home from College or on a trip with your friends. Don't go for the food. It was gross. I was so excited to try this place and it was a huge let down. Sad...now let's have the owner respond with something condescending about how he hopes I find something better in Maui... History

Established in 2015.

Established in September 2015, Down the Hatch was started by three childhood friends from Georgia. Javier Barberi, Dave Fincher and Julian Bonfardin studied hospitality management in college and moved to Maui after graduation. They worked in different areas of the service industry for several years before launching out on their own. They wanted a restaurant/bar catering to the community and guests of the beautiful island of Maui - and Down The Hatch was born.

Javier, Dave and Julian started Down the Hatch in September 2015. These three have known each other since they were 7 years old in Georgia. Having worked in restaurants since they were teens, they decided to open one on their own and now they are living their dream. Bottom line We understand that Maui is expensive and that restaurants face high operating costs. Still, charging premium prices should come with generous portions, consistently good food, and genuinely hospitable service. Aloha Mixed Plate may have a beautiful new space, but at these prices, it feels overhyped and not like a good value. I recently visited "Down the Hatch" in Lahaina, Maui and had mixed feelings about my experience. The food itself was quite impressive, but a few factors prevented it from being a great dining spot. Firstly, let's talk about the positives. The fish and chips were undeniably fresh, although I must caution others to be careful as they were served piping hot. The lobster crab grilled cheese was a delightful combination, although it leaned towards the sweeter side. The coconut shrimps were a highlight and left me craving for more. The flavors were on point, and I thoroughly enjoyed the dishes. However, the restaurant's location posed a significant challenge. The Hawaiian humidity was unavoidable, and it made the dining experience uncomfortable. If only the seating arrangement was more spacious, it would have alleviated the issue. The cramped seating detracted from the overall enjoyment, and it felt a bit suffocating. Additionally, the presence of a koi fish river or pond seemed like a charming touch initially. Unfortunately, it attracted mosquitos, making the outdoor seating area a haven for these bothersome insects. It would have been much better if measures were taken to address this issue. I have been coming to Down the Hatch since the doors were opened in 2015. The diversity in services is by far unmatched by any other operation on the island. The breakfast options are by far the best around leaving no exception for lunch and diner as well. And an occasional late-night cocktail with live music, live D.J is always a fun way to share the local community vibe and an environment that totally brings the Aloha. And the professionalism Dave Fincher and his staff brings should not be overlooked. I feel safe bringing my wife, friends, and family without any worries. Really the most fun with the utmost attention to responsible behavior from both sides of the bar. Totally a true class act from every aspect. We were in Maui in January 2018 to see whales ... and did we see whales! We made it back to Maui this September for our wedding anniversary (43rd). In both visits, we came to Down the Hatch (twice this latest trip!). Low prices on happy hour drinks ... and good long hh hours, 2-6! Great tasting Lava Lava shrimp appetizer, with 20% discounts on some menu items during happy hour. It's a great place to visit, especially after flying in that day. While it may be 4pm HST, flying in from CA means it's 7pm and HUNGRY. Happy hour = dinner time for us! Nothing wrong with saving a few bucks dining in HI. Hippest new spot in Lahaina! Pumped to find this place, went many times, and it always delivered. Fish tacos, Lobster Grilled Cheese (are you kidding me?! So good!), Fresh Fish... the food is great & at a good price. Can't beat the friendly service, the staff is so cool & fun. It's a laid back place, and I felt comfortable, relaxed and welcome. Try the Maui Sour cocktail or maybe the Lilikoi Martini, great mixed cocktails. Go on Saturday if you can!!! Was in Lahaina for a week and wanted casual, so stopped in off reviews on Yelp and was delighted... Ordered at the food counter and had the fish tacos. On recommendation, tried one of each (fried and broiled) which were fantastic! Since DTH is on Front St. across from the Banyans, there's the family, day crowd coming in to grab a bite or a cool one, (try the shave ice...) then at night, there's a younger vibe with a lot of locals and a great party atmosphere. Prime central location across from the Banyan Tree and Lahaina Harbor, open-air, relaxed atmosphere and dynamite food and drinks. The staff is incredibly welcoming and makes you feel like you belong. My wife and I went to this place last October for our honey moon, and are we glad we did! It's somewhat tucked down on Front street in the middle of this little plaza area. They have fantastic drinks, but the Lava Shrimp appetizer was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has a good tangy flavor to it and they don't skimp on the portions. This place was pretty bad compared to other restaurants on Front St. It actually sits below Front St. in a Mall that houses a movie theater. The seating area is really dirty, hot and uncomfortable. The staff was nice enough but for the prices you should get a cold beer not a warm beer. Best surfer dive lounge in Lahaina! The food is absolutely spectacular... love the Lobster & Crab Grilled Cheese, the Lava Shrimp & the Chicken & Waffles. This is my first review! I hope I am doing this right! I was in Maui a few weeks ago for a family reunion (I live in Los Angeles) with my daughter. I am a single dad. We ate at Down the Hatch and loved it! I had a lobster sandwich. My daughter had fish and fries. We both said it's one of the best meals we've ever had. Very quite atmosphere, excellent food, and their shave ice place is in the same building which makes for the perfect dessert. tried the triple D featured lobster grilled cheese and it was decent, but so much sauce and cheese you couldn't taste the lobster or crab. While eating it I was wishing I had the chicken tacos because they were to die for, and so beautiful on the plate. Mahi sandwich is also tasty, messy, but so tasty. read more

We came back to Maui for our honeymoon which meant we had to hit up DTH once more! We were just as happy as we were last time. We ate more of the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese and then we tried some new dishes. We tried both the Mermaid Fries and Mermaid Tenders. We also tried their quesadilla. We are near the end of our trip on Maui and I wish we had known about this place earlier. The food is great, service is great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh fish on the island. I had the lobster mac n cheese sandwich and my girlfriend had the poke bowl special with bacon brussel sprouts-very yummy! It's ok. Nothing special. Kinda expensive for what you get. Lava shrimp was good but sat on a lot of cabbage and was kinda of mushy. Taco was plain but surprisingly filling because of the chips on the side. Grilled lobster and crab was ok. Not too much meat inside . Tasted similar to a crab cake in a grilled cheese . Best food in Maui and love the atmosphere! If you go here definitely get the Mahi Mahi tacos and the coconut shrimp. Also the owner is very good looking so although it's not on the beach there's still a very good view! Salad: we split the MOLOKA'I WATERMELON SALAD, which was the most interesting salad on the menu: Makawao Farm arugula + Kumu Farm watermelon + sheep milk feta + Kula sweet onion + EVOO + aged balsamic. It was refreshing and tasty - and they kindly split it for us in the kitchen. Definitely big enough for two people to split, so a great value for $18.
