I really wanted to love this place. I really did! But the drinks were a little too sweet for my taste and the food was mostly of the fried variety, meaning it was too greasy and unhealthy for me. There was nothing to cut down on the richness. Loved the feel of the place though! read more

EDIT- apparently they are handicap accessible per comment HOWEVER it is not well posted if posted at all nor is it on the Main Street. For someone who has never been there before you would have no idea how to get there. I even asked the information desk in front of the complex and he said there was no good way to get down. So some feedback for the owner since he reads every post is to put up clearly posted signs with directional information as to how to get down. I bet others would appreciate that too! Pros- coconut shrimp to die for, great live music, decent prices Cons- not handicap accessible (mom had to transfer out of her chair twice and my husband had to lift her scooter up and down stairs), super hot due to it being below street level and really run down. Honestly don't know how the fish in the pond were even alive in such dirty water. Basically food is great atmosphere has a lot to be desired. Wouldn't eat there again due to that read more

The wait is WORTH IT! We loved every bite. It definitely gets busy so go before your hungry. We loved the atmosphere and found a table by the koi pond. Do NOT miss out on that grilled cheese. I'm pretty sure I'll be having dreams about it. read more

First of all, this is a fish place with only a few non fish items. So I don't recommend young kids unless they like fish. One of the bartenders was not cool. You sit in the middle of a sunken courtyard with direct sunlight and no airflow unless you are sitting at the bar. Although, there are live music schedules. Which is good. My lava lava spicy chicken sandwich was incredible. The lava lava is a spicy sauce which just makes it even better. But with the moisture and no airflow it was just too hot and sticky read more

A stranger at a bar recommended this place and it didn't miss! My husband and I shared the Cajun dish of the day platter and the lobster/crab grilled cheese. The platter was seasoned very well with a side of rice and veggies. The grilled cheese was phenomenal. I also got the Mai Tai and it didn't disappoint! We would definitely return any time we are in Maui! read more

The place is open and you order at the counter and food is delivered to your table. The staff were very friendly and nice and I would come back here for lunch or a quick bite. We ordered lava lava shrimp which was a pretty good and had a little kick to it. I had the lobster and crab grilled cheese which was a little too intense for me. It was mostly crab (in heavy sauce) with barely any lobster. Also on top, they drizzled a lot of sauce so it was too overpowering for me. My husband had the chicken and waffles and said the chicken was ok, not too much flavor but the waffles were pretty good. Overall it was good and we would return to try other items but the food is on the heavier side. read more

Wow, this is probably the best place to eat on all of Maui. The food is so savory and delicious. I had the chicken tacos and the Mermaid fries and they were both so so good. The mango salsa here is to die for, make sure you get a side of it! read more

While visiting Maui, Down the Hatch was one of the food spots I wanted to try so badly. I've seen so many reviews and even some Tiktoks about this place so I had very high expectations for their food, and this place definitely lives up to their reputation. The food was absolutely amazing, the best I had throughout my whole trip. I went on a Thursday night and it was very busy; however, after waiting in line to order and for the food to come out it was all pretty fast for how busy it was. It's a very casual place but the ambiance was so fun and the bar was filled with people having a great time. There is a huge pond with koi fish and turtles throughout the whole inside of the restaurant which was my favorite part about this place, other than the food. I ordered the Lava Lava Shrimp Tacos, Crispy Coconut Shrimp and the Pog Foam Mai Thai and it all was amazing!!! I got my shrimp crispy based on chef's recommendation and I'm glad I did because along with the mango salsa it tasted like perfection. Their coconut shrimp appetizer was so flavorful too, I was very happy with my meal. I would definitely recommend coming here!! read more

When planning my trip to Maui, this was one of the first restaurants I bookmarked and I'm so glad I was able to try this place out! My fiancé and I came here on a Sunday evening after driving the road to Hana. If you've drove the road to Hana, you know there's barely anywhere worth eating, so we were starving by the time we got to Down The Hatch! This is the type of restaurant where you order at the counter, they give you a number, and you find a table. The place was packed, but luckily there wasn't a line and we were able to grab a table with ease. I ordered the lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese and my fiancé ordered the lava lava spicy chicken sandwich. Both came with shoestring fries. They were SO good! The grilled cheese had an ample amount of lobster and crab; the cheese made it pure ooey gooey goodness! The chicken sandwich was delicious. Crispy outside, tender inside. Both sandwiches are on the heavier side and relatively rich, so don't try to eat it all in one sitting! Hoping to return to Maui again in the near future! I'd love to try their breakfast, DTH shots, and happy hour! Highly recommend this place! read more

We decided to try this place thanks to Yelp reviews. And I am so so glad we did! There was a bit of wait for ordering but once we placed the order, we were seated promptly and our food came very quick. Seating is outdoor. Kids tried Fish and Chips which was promptly polished. We tried Mac Nit Crusted Mahi Mahi which was outstanding. Fish was cooked perfectly. But the star of the meal was Sweet Potato Tacos with avocado! The sweet and tangy mango salsa goes so well with sweet potatoes. Drinks were also very well made and kids got their free ice cream after meal which was a bonus. This place is a must try if you are in Lahaina. read more

After an exhausting and hot morning of adventuring, we were so hungry and thirsty for a nice drink! The line was super long but they moved through it quickly and meals came out promptly. It's pick your own seating so that was a bit tough with six people but with time we made it happen! The food was absolutely incredible and drink mixes/selection so good. The beers were cold and the mai tai was one of the best we had during our trip. Loved the fish tacos the most, fluffy and mango salsa such a great combo! read more

Perfect casual spot for lunch. We ordered the firecracker shrimp, ahi tuna sandwich, spicy fried chicken sandwich, kids popcorn shrimp and a painkiller beverage. Everything was really good. Especially the firecracker shrimp. The popcorn shrimp actually had decent size shrimp and not those little bits of shrimp. The ahi sandwich was really good, it was seared on the outside and rare on the inside. My husband is not a fan of raw/rare fish and he liked it. The pain killer was very refreshing. It's an order at the counter type place. Seems like most of the popular fish joints are in these parts. The seating area has a pretty nice bar too. I had the surf and turf burger with the lava shrimps. It was absolutely spectacular. 2 4oz patties and some fire lava shrimp was the kowabunga mouth spectacular daddy (me) was looking for. My wife had the mahi mahi and loved it. Per usual for here on Maui the prices were a bit steep but the service and food were spectacular. Would come back for sure. read more

I was skeptical when the friendly cashier said the huevos rancheros were excellent but went for it. Plenty of seating and they had lot ponds throughout the patio. Drawback of the ponds were the tiny flies it attracted so we got a high table to avoid them. They had a bar with sport games on for those interested. The food came out fast and not only looked good, it tasted AMAZING! As a Mexican from Southern California, I was deeply impressed by the flavors and slight heat they put in it. Best meal we had in Maui and we had a lot of meals. Come early to snag good parking. Must try! read more

Fun and funky casual spot in Maui. I realize it's hard to find a place in Maui with appropriately priced great food and drinks, enter Down the Hatch. My Mai Thai was $14 and a beer was $6, unlike the $25 at the resort. The lava lava shrimp was delicious! I was surprised normally when things have that much hype, they tend to disappoint. Not these! So bloody good. Also my ahi tacos were tasty. The fish tacos were really good too, very fresh tasting. The crab and lobster grilled cheese was good, but to rich for me. Overall a great meal. The ambience is nothing pretentious, just a fun open air order at the counter bar atmosphere. I definitely recommend this place. read more

One of the BEST restaurants in Maui. We ordered the Crusted Mahi and Sampler Plate. I must say these dishes were one of the highlights of our trip. Having the lava shrimp with some rice made it a deadly combo. The quesadillas from the platter were loaded with flavor and an absolutely treat to eat. The only problem was that there was a super long line (1+ hour wait) even during awkward times. If you can handle the wait, I say you MUST go here. read more

Came here during happy hour for the discounted drinks and appetizers. We got the $5.5 mai tai, lava lava shrimp, and mermaid fries. The mai tai was a bit strong but the flavors were good. Live music was fun! Both the fries and shrimp came with their house lava lava sauce which was a bit too heavy for my taste. I didn't feel super good after. We tried the ahi samurai (an appetizer) and it was so good! It's kind of like bruschetta, but with raw tuna, some light greens, onions, and sauce. It comes with 4 pieces and you HAVE to get it. I've never had anything like this but if I come back, I'd just get this. We also tried the fish tacos here but it has nothing on the other fish taco places we've been to. This place is located in the center of what seems like an outdoor shopping mall. It's a festive, noisy place because there's a bar to get drinks late into the night. Obviously we had to try this place since it was the most poppin thing we saw online and it lived up to its name. I LOVED the scene, it's literally down the hatch haha very live outdoor feel with a great vibe. A bar with TVs and great selection of drinks. Funny and helpful staff who recommend the goods when you can't decide since their menu is full of everything you want. We decided to go for the fried fish plate which was AMAZING. The crisp of the skin with the lemon flowing down is done like no other. The lava shrimp is the most popular appy for a reason. Order it and you probably won't want to share. The food was really good and the atmosphere was even better. There was music playing, and you get the indoor and outdoor feel of the restaurant at the same time. The restaurant is self seating. You order your food at the counter, they give you a number and deliver your food. This does make it hard to find a table though when they are really busy and alcohol can only be consumed at their wooden tables. This is a very casual place. I tried the Yeti frozen mule and it was really refreshing. Also tried the mermaid chicken tenders which was really good. July 5th was our Lahaina day. I took my cousins visiting from New York through Lahaina and beyond stopping at a few look out points and beaches. Our afternoon plan was to have dinner and watch a sunset. We arrived at the end of Happy Hour which was perfect because we stood in line for about 20 minutes and was able to be seated at a table. I have eaten here once while visiting with my daughter so I knew the food would be delicious. We all ordered the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with fries. Also adult beverages of Mai Tai and Beer. We all loved our food and drinks. The sandwiches were so yummy and very filling. Very tasty and fresh. I observed the servers delivering various dishes to the other tables and all the other dishes looked amazing and I'm sure they tasted good. It's outdoor seating and it was very nice. Definitely if you're visiting Lahaina do check this place out. As we left to go watch our sunset there was a super long line waiting so our timing of dinner was perfect. read more

We stopped here before the Feast at Lele for an appetizer and drinks! The drinks were good, we got a Blue Moon and Pina Colada that were on Happy Hour! The bar service was a little slow but it was also pretty busy in there. My husband had to go up to the bar to get our drinks that were just sitting there. It was a cool spot, we ordered the lava shrimp which was a decent sized portion and it came in a martini glass. We only got one app so if we went back in the future we would definitely try some of their entrees! read more

Established in 2015.

Established in September 2015, Down the Hatch was started by three childhood friends from Georgia. Javier Barberi, Dave Fincher and Julian Bonfardin studied hospitality management in college and moved to Maui after graduation. They worked in different areas of the service industry for several years before launching out on their own. They wanted a restaurant/bar catering to the community and guests of the beautiful island of Maui - and Down The Hatch was born.

Javier, Dave and Julian started Down the Hatch in September 2015. These three have known each other since they were 7 years old in Georgia. Having worked in restaurants since they were teens, they decided to open one on their own and now they are living their dream. I have been coming to Down the Hatch since the doors were opened in 2015. The diversity in services is by far unmatched by any other operation on the island. The breakfast options are by far the best around leaving no exception for lunch and diner as well. And an occasional late-night cocktail with live music, live D.J is always a fun way to share the local community vibe and an environment that totally brings the Aloha. And the professionalism Dave Fincher and his staff brings should not be overlooked. I feel safe bringing my wife, friends, and family without any worries. Really the most fun with the utmost attention to responsible behavior from both sides of the bar. Totally a true class act from every aspect. In both visits, we came to Down the Hatch (twice this latest trip!). Low prices on happy hour drinks ... and good long hh hours, 2-6! Great tasting Lava Lava shrimp appetizer, with 20% discounts on some menu items during happy hour. It's a great place to visit, especially after flying in that day. While it may be 4pm HST, flying in from CA means it's 7pm and HUNGRY. Happy hour = dinner time for us! Nothing wrong with saving a few bucks dining in HI. On recommendation, tried one of each (fried and broiled) which were fantastic! Since DTH is on Front St. across from the Banyans, there's the family, day crowd coming in to grab a bite or a cool one, (try the shave ice...) then at night, there's a younger vibe with a lot of locals and a great party atmosphere. My wife and I went to this place last October for our honey moon, and are we glad we did! It's somewhat tucked down on Front street in the middle of this little plaza area. They have fantastic drinks, but the Lava Shrimp appetizer was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has a good tangy flavor to it and they don't skimp on the portions. This place was pretty bad compared to other restaurants on Front St. It actually sits below Front St. in a Mall that houses a movie theater. The seating area is really dirty, hot and uncomfortable. The staff was nice enough but for the prices you should get a cold beer not a warm beer. We came back to Maui for our honeymoon which meant we had to hit up DTH once more! We were just as happy as we were last time. We ate more of the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese and then we tried some new dishes. We tried both the Mermaid Fries and Mermaid Tenders. We also tried their quesadilla. Everything was just as wonderful, if not more so our second trip! We can't wait to return to Maui so we can eat here again! read more

We are near the end of our trip on Maui and I wish we had known about this place earlier. The food is great, service is great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh fish on the island. I had the lobster mac n cheese sandwich and my girlfriend had the poke bowl special with bacon brussel sprouts-very yummy! AND there is shave ice right next door that is also awesome! 10/10 recommend. read more

It's ok. Nothing special. Kinda expensive for what you get. Lava shrimp was good but sat on a lot of cabbage and was kinda of mushy. Taco was plain but surprisingly filling because of the chips on the side. Grilled lobster and crab was ok. Not too much meat inside . Tasted similar to a crab cake in a grilled cheese . The drinks however were amazing. Got a few different ones and they were all perfect . read more

Best food in Maui and love the atmosphere! If you go here definitely get the Mahi Mahi tacos and the coconut shrimp. Also the owner is very good looking so although it's not on the beach there's still a very good view! And Jeremy was super nice as well and went out of his way to make us have a good time and feel welcomed - table of 8 Canadian girls! read more

Nice place but the food is terrible of the four meals we had two were burnt and one was cold for a fish restaurant the best meal was the hamburger their signature grilled lobster and crab sandwiches were burnt and the fish burger was cold all the French fries were cold my advice would be stick to the burger at least the ground beef burger was good read more

Stumbled across this place while walking down Front st. Our bartender Jeremy greeted us and made us the "Special" of the day!! Loved it. Totally enjoyed ourselves.. I highly recommend it. The pricing was the biggest issue: - $17.50 for an appetizer of only five wings. - $35.50 for a kalbi plate that amounted to roughly 2 1/2 ribs, chopped into seven or eight small pieces. - $19 for a small serving of mochiko chicken bites. - The kids' sliders were just two tiny burgers on Hawaiian sweet rolls. For two entrées, one appetizer, and two non-alcoholic drinks, our total came to more than $110. That is difficult to justify when both the portion sizes and overall service fell short. Bottom line We understand that Maui is expensive and that restaurants face high operating costs. Still, charging premium prices should come with generous portions, consistently good food, and genuinely hospitable service. Aloha Mixed Plate may have a beautiful new space, but at these prices, it feels overhyped and not like a good value. We hope they reconsider the portion sizes and customer experience, because the lack of aloha and the high prices could easily turn visitors away rather than make them want to return.
