Came here 2 times during our stay in Maui. 1st time was phenomenal!!! 2nd time not so good. We got the spicy chicken sandwich and shrimp tacos as well as a Lava Flow. The bread with the chicken sandwich was soft and so good, the chicken with the lava sauce was delicious. The shoestring fries were crispy and fresh as well. The lava flow was so refreshing!!! Not to mention Angel was a total sweetheart!!! He was very friendly and a real nice guy. The 2nd time we came here was right when happy hour was ending which we didn't mind. But the fries were nasty it was like the last of the bunch, the shrimp was okay and just even the salad that I ordered didn't taste good. The lobster and crab grilled cheese everyone talks about wasnt good as it looked. My husband and I both felt that the quality the first time was definitely not like the first time, food tasted old and just blahhh. All in all a good spot just wouldn't come after happy hour end. Had a great brunch with extended family. We got all sorts of yummy plates. The best was my kiddos giant waffle and chicken stack. They loved watching the turtles swim around in the little canal. You wait on a line that goes down a flight of stairs to order your food and drinks. Then, you do your best to try to find a table and they bring the food out to you. After not moving at all in the line for 20 minutes the first night, we decided to leave. We came back at 2 pm a couple days later in hopes the lines weren't as bad. Though the ordering line was manageable this time, finding a table was impossible. We got lucky when a group of two left. Turn out time was very slow, especially since we only ordered one sandwich to split. The food itself was good, but definitely not worth the wait or hassle that comes with this place. read more

I went on Yelp to find breakfast recommendations near kaanapali and found Down the Hatch. Best find ever..... We went twice while we were staying in Maui. I probably would have gone back for lunch or dinner, but parking on Front Street can be crazy so we stuck with breakfast. I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It's in a downstairs courtyard with plenty of seating (and music). You order your food at the counter and they bring it to your table. Service was quick and the prices were very reasonable, considering the price of food in Maui. The first time I had the southern style chicken biscuit since (I don't eat eggs). I'm not sure how they make their biscuits, but this was one of the best biscuits I've had - it was almost crispy on the outside but soft inside. The chicken and gravy were perfect. The second time I had the bagel sandwich with bacon (no egg). I wasn't very hungry, and wasn't expecting much from a bagel sandwich, but this was hands down the best bagel sandwich I've ever had. It came with potatoes, which were crispy balls of potato perfection. I wasn't able to finish my food and got a to-go bag for my leftovers (it tasted just as good a few hours later). Went to DTH for early lunch. When we approached the counter to order my husband asked if the burger bun was dairy free as he has a milk allergy. The cashier replied that they had a gluten free burger bun, which to us implied they do not understand the difference between dairy free vs gluten free. We asked again to confirm if the gluten free bun was also dairy free and he quickly said yes. Which we did not feel confident on his answer. When the waitress brought the food out we asked her the same question and she did not speak enough English to answer us. My husband's allergy is severe so he just ate the burger without the bun to be safe. The 2 burger patties were so small he left feeling hungry. I ordered the lava chicken sandwich which was served smothered in sauce and served on huge slices of bread. It felt more like late night bar food. The flavor was ok. The ambiance here is that of a food court. Busy and lots of people passing through to visit shops. We did not enjoy our experience here. read more

This place is great! LOVED the açai Coconut margarita. It was very tasty. We ordered the Sample platter which had the lava shrimp, Kalua quesadilla, and crispy calamari. This was a great portion to share for lunch . The two of us was able to share this platter and got pretty full! All of it was delicious especially the lava shrimp. I had to see what the hype was about this place, and overall I thought this place was pretty cool. It's not a traditional restaurant. It's one of the places where you order and pay at the counter or you sit at the bar and order. I went for breakfast and ordered their southern loco moco and substituted for fried rice instead of having potatoes. I was in the mood for a traditional loco moco but I figured I would give the southern style a try. The patties were seasoned well but I think I prefer not to have cheese on my loco moco. Other than that, the fried rice was delicious. I came here again the next day for happy hour and dinner. You can't beat their happy hour prices on drinks. The mai tais and lava flows were so good! We couldn't drink them fast enough to keep getting the happy hour prices. I also ordered the mermaid chicken tenders which the guy at the counter recommended I get all of the sauces on the side to dip. The lave lava sauce was actually my favorite. This place seemed busy most of the time and they have some cool merchandise. The prices are pretty reasonable and the food was good. I would come back for the drinks! The parking here can be difficult but if you don't mind walking, there are always public spots behind the restaurant. read more

The cheapest and TASTIEST drinks on Maui, at $5.50 for Hawaiian cocktails, you really can't beat that. Every single drink we ordered was delicious, we would recommend the lava flow! Outdoor seating, but most tables have umbrellas in case it's drizzling. Good for kids, my son loved the pond with the turtle and fish. Note, this is based solely on our purchase of the lobster and crab grilled cheese. To say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. It tasted fine, but that's about it. And seriously small. The menu makes it sound like you're getting something decadent, but really, it was some lobster and crab on two pieces of partially grilled wonder bread cut into four pieces. The location is fun, but there's no need to go to Down the Hatch to experience that. Go get some shave ice or something and check out the koi pond. Came here to try the lobster crab grilled cheese, which I got with a side of broccoli while my husband had the surf and turf burger. I had a bite of his and liked it so much we came back and both got the burger! I like how chill the atmosphere is and that the adult shaved ice place is right there too. They have a good menu and we did catch live music one day. The second time we went there was a really long line, yet there were still tables open when we ordered, which was nice. The lobster grilled cheese was ok, but it was a lot of bread and somewhat diluted by the cabbage. I was surprised how tasty the broccoli was though. The second time we went I got a side salad with the burger, and they were able to give me a serving of the spinach strawberry salad which was tasty. The burger has a great charred flavor and comes with a good amount of the lava shrimp. It didn't seem as good the second visit as the bite I had the first visit, but still very good. I like that they will cook fish you catch (if it's already cleaned, etc. and the portion is brought in on ice). If we had a place like this at home we'd go there all the time. read more

This is one of the tourist spot in Lahaina in the plaza right across from the huge Banyan tree. This place is casual - you order your food at the counter and take your number and they drop your food off once it's ready. The nice thing is there is the Breakwall cafe down in the same area and my friend ordered food from there and we were still able to sit together. I came here twice for the breakfast fried rice. I love that they offer a half size which is still massive. I was stuffed after eating it. I tried it with the lava sauce the first time but it has a mayo base (I didn't know that when I ordered it) and I'm not a mayo fan. Luckily it was on the side so I just skipped it and added sriracha instead. They also have a bar and it seems to be a place for late night festivities if you're looking for that. It has vodka, passion , orange & guava pineapple with dragonfruit purée. Yum . I had chicken & biscuit with egg on top . My daughter had a kids cheese omelette with bacon. Not on the menu they were able to do it for us . Just added cheese to the kids scramble. And my bf had Ahi Tuna Benedict . We all loved our food so much. Portions were not big but we were all satisfied. Kids meal came with a free shaved ice . Make sure you go to Safeway before if you are getting breakfast. On the back of the receipt there is a buy one get one 50% off . Prices are decent. Live music was a plus. This is a super chill restaurant and I look forward to coming back for lunch or dinner. UPDATE: Came back for dinner with my family a day later . Ordered Baja Chicken Tacos and let me tell you, I couldn't keep my younger daughter off them . Best chicken tacos I've ever had . A very casual spot Front St. spot with fantastic food. We waited in line on the stairs, ordered at a counter downstairs, took the thing with our order number on it and then searched for a table. Foid is then brought to the table, you need to get your own silverware, napkins and soft drinks. All of its extremely worth it. The food here is plentiful and well made. Chicken and waffles could feed at least two people. Coconut shrimp is a standard enjoyed by my wife and is always consistent. I alternated between the crab/lobster grilled cheese, chicken and waffles and LavaLava fried shrimp tacos on three separate visits. They were all good, it just depends on how full do you want to be. My son reports the drinks are strong. I love their tasty non alcoholic POG which even smells good across the table. I could come here 10 times in a row, have something different every night and I seriously doubt I'd be disappointed. Down the Hatch is a no brainer for lunch or dinner. Was excited to try the fresh seafood here from all reviews! I was told it was the best and longest happy hour from 2 to 6 PM every day. I would have to say it was the most affordable lunch we had on the island so far. Here you Place order, pay, pick a number & food delivered food to you. So kind of like a food court in a mall outdoors. My first impression wasn't the greatest as the guy that took her order was rude, compared to all other spots on island. He was definitely just having a bad day. I think he was like one of the locals that did not want us on his island because of the virus. And I totally get that now. but we got here before the whole thing took off like it is now. Took 25 minutes to get a beer & there was only maybe 10 tables on our visit. Beer was not very cold and my wife's lava flow had no alcohol or tasted like there's no alcohol in it. Took 30 minutes to get if food which is average And it took another five minutes to get silverware Once we got our food (our waitress walked by us five or six times without offering us silverware) The bartender was sweating his ass off. Food was just OK, presentation on the lava scrimp was nice. Wife got the fish n chips fish it was good fries were warm ish 5 stars for cleaning each table as guests left they were doing a good job making sure the tables were wiped down.
