I was doing some shopping in the area but wanted to start the day with a good meal. We stopped by here. The place is small, but there was plenty of seating when we showed up at 10 am Sunday morning. The staff were very nice and friendly and they came by several times to make sure we had what we needed. I ordered a turkey club sandwich with a side of fries. My friend ordered the classic eggs Benedict. I was craving a turkey club and this was so good, I might have to stop in again soon just to order it. Showed up on a Sunday morning for late morning brunch and was worried that it would be packed, but there was plenty of tables open. I can see how they can get busy since, they have about two tables outside and maybe 8-10 inside. Be warned it was in the 40s outside and it felt just the same inside! The staff was extremely friendly and we got seated right away. Their menu is pretty extensive with many options. I ordered the classic eggs benedicts and was happy with the choice. The portions are large, the potatoes were delicious and not overcooked! What I really liked is that the hollandaise sauce had a nice lemony flavor! Excellent service at Downtown Cafe. Really good, well prepared breakfast. Classic eggs Benedict was delicious with tasty lemony hollandaise. They have several Benedicts on the menu. Two thumbs up for the Belgian waffle with fresh blueberries that was a caramelized brown, crispy yet fluffy inside. Just how we like it. Nice syrup. Pretty good coffee. Generous portions. Second time going, after the first experience felt lacking; both due to the food preparation, and service. But since there aren't many family style restaurants in the area -- I decided to give the spot another try about (4) months later. Regretful decision. Orded a simple mixed-berry waffle combo & asked that my eggs be prepared "fried hard". Why were the eggs literally jiggling, as the waitress set the plate down? She even noticed, but tried to walk away anyhow. I politely requested the eggs be prepped correctly, but kept the waffle. BTW: there's a $2 upcharge for fruit (which is common). But, why did my plate only come with EXACTLY (8) blueberries and the equivalent of 1.5 sliced strawberries?? To make matters worse, the waitress returned my plate with still runny egg yolks -- which I didn't eat, as I don't eat runny eggs. The biggest issue, besides the ill-prepared simple breakfast, was the attitude of the heavily-tattooed flamboyant guy managing the place. As the waitress explained to him why I was sending my plate back, he would look over at me / my table -- flailing his hands with a look of disgust. And at this point, I was the only one on that side of the little restaurant, so there was no mistaking the vibes. To cap it off, he later comes over to my table, literally leaning over my plate to arrogantly explain the 'fruity issue' (pun intended). I'd had enough, and asked him to give me some space, the bill, and a 'to go' box. A mild argument ensued, where he tried to belittle me by asking how long I've been in California, to not understand the price of fruit -- claiming "I've been here for (7) years, so even I know..." Buddy: I'm born & raised "Cali". But your attitude, lack of professionalism, and an inability to get a simple breakfast right are the real issues. I explained how this was my 2nd--and likely, last--time coming; to which he arrogantly suggested it should be. (If we were 'on the streets' this is the kind of behavior that might get you smacked in the mouth.) My suggestion: go to the Lighthouse Cafe (literally only a block away) for your Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, snacks...whatever. But "Caveat emptor" (may the buyer beware) if you choose to eat at this establishment. Not only is the food prep an issue, but the flamboyant arrogance of the little manager guy officially ensured I'll never patronize the Downtown Cafe EVER again. Interesting enough: I also haven't had a conflict with anyone regarding services--for at least (4+) years. Way to go, guy. No wonder the place was almost empty, when there's already very few eateries around. read more

Well my first time here. Pittsburgh's a little bit out of the way but I like to go to some nearby places sometimes.. nice little downtown area. Comfortable atmosphere relaxed. First of all probably the best coffee I've had anywhere very delicious I don't know what kind it is but I like it I wanted to get some more to go Was initially disappointed because it didn't have biscuits and gravy, the only thing that had gravy was the chicken fried steak and I wasn't going to try that it looked a little bit too heavy. I had the bacon and eggs with a country potatoes. The potatoes were delicious perfect cooked right. The eggs were okay bacon nice portions I like mine cooked a little more though. I asked for sourdough bread toast and it wasn't toasted so I was a little bit curious about that. But it worked. This was the grossest food I have ever had. I ordered a club sandwich. How hard do you have to try to mess up a club sandwich? I took ONE bite and had to spit it out. I love mayo. I eat my fries with a little dip of it. This bite of sandwich had so much mayo - HOT mayo - that I immediately felt ill. And I felt sick the entire day. Literally disgusting. The server was gracious, took the plate away immediately and brought me a menu and asked if I wanted something else. I was hungry but also feeling sick so I got a pancake. Two bites and I was just done. I should have known when we walked in and it smelled gross and only one other table was occupied that it probably wasn't going to end well. There's quite a bit to choose from. I went w/a waffle combo. Waffle was fluffy & moist inside but could have used some crunch on the exterior. The berries were good. Over-medium eggs were cooked nicely, a minute longer would've been perfect for me. I asked for bacon but also got a sausage. The bacon was cooked nicely but it had that off aftertaste found in some bacon. It didn't ruin the meal, it's just one of those things that you get from time to time. Our table was totally forgotten about and any time that I needed anything (to place our order, to get more water, to request our check), I had to go to the front counter and find a staff member to get help. The vibe inside of the small restaurant is your typical breakfast spot, with an industrial feel aided by metal beams and red brick walls. The food was pretty simple, and it didn't taste bad but it wasn't worth returning for at all. I asked for jack cheese in my omelet but had to make do with cheddar because they used the wrong cheese and I didn't feel like hunting down another waiter. I will say that the staff were friendly enough, but friendliness doesn't really equate to good service if you're doing all the legwork yourself as a customer that was expecting table service. OMG! If you want great service and a great meal that won't break you bank, this is the spot in downtown Pittsburg. The Bistro Burger had my husband humming a tune and the Tuna melt was flavorful and the sourdough toast was crunchy but did not hurt the top of my mouth.(If you know you know). I wanted to love this place, but that's different from how it panned out. We went there just this morning to have breakfast. The place was quaint and located in the old town area of Pittsburg. I read the review and thought, it would be a nice change in pace to find a local eatery. We were the only ones left when we arrived. We placed our order. Three additional families came in afterwards and received their food very quickly. 30 minutes after we came in and placed our order, I had to ask what was taking so long for us to get our omelettes. It took another 10 minutes for our food to come out. Honestly, we almost walked out because we were made to wait too long. The waitress finally arrived with our food and told us there was a mix-up with our order, which was given away as a to-go order. I find it hard to believe that since I asked for no tomatoes for my order, someone else would have the same order. They said they would discount our food for the delay. It took an additional 10 minutes for us to get a check. For a small establishment, before it got busy, it was shocking to see all of the staff just hanging out at the front talking. No communication, no respect for the customer, no thanks. Not planning on coming back after this lack of respect and customer service. read more

We live in Antioch and trust me, the drive is so well worth it to downtown Pittsburgh to visit this hidden gem ! The portions are large, the country red potatoes served with breakfast are excellent, along with refills of tasty hot coffee as we request ! Their Joe's Scramble made with chicken breast is a welcomed tasty change also ! This is a small local business that we are VERY HAPPY to visit and enjoy almost every weekend ! Bad decision! Horrible/dry/unpleasant/unprofessional/not welcoming customer service. Food was ok, I would rate 2-3 of 5 stars. The place was alright, but the customer service from the waiter is absolutely a Zero+. Felt like I was eating breakfast at a bar with his loud mouth and didn't even care to check if I needed a refill or anything. Noticed that he didn't care to check up on anyone else too. Next time for sure I will just go to my usual place The New Mecca or Lumpys which is just a walk away. If you wanna have a great meal and great customer service, DONT COME HERE! My friends and I came here Friday for brunch, we had to go back to work after so needed a place close by. Downtown Cafe is 5 minutes from where we work, so we decided to come here instead of going to Lumpy's. We all ordered breakfast. This place is cozy and although the tables were full, the noise level wasn't bad at all. Add to that, the service here is amazing and so friendly! The food was so good - I had the pancake breakfast below but not a fan of thick pancakes. Asked for flapjack style pancakes and they served them up perfectly! The pancakes were fluffy, hot and served with butter and syrup. Bacon was tasty and not overly salty, and the eggs were delicious! All of our orders were cooked as requested and here's how awesome the service was - one of my friends can't eat seeds, so they checked the toast and brought the bread out so that we could see it.
