I was doing some shopping in the area but wanted to start the day with a good meal. We stopped by here. The place is small, but there was plenty of seating when we showed up at 10 am Sunday morning. The staff were very nice and friendly and they came by several times to make sure we had what we needed. I ordered a turkey club sandwich with a side of fries. My friend ordered the classic eggs Benedict. I was craving a turkey club and this was so good, I might have to stop in again soon just to order it. My friend liked her eggs Benedict, she said the hollandaise sauce had really good flavor.

Showed up on a Sunday morning for late morning brunch and was worried that it would be packed, but there was plenty of tables open. I can see how they can get busy since, they have about two tables outside and maybe 8-10 inside. Be warned it was in the 40s outside and it felt just the same inside! The staff was extremely friendly and we got seated right away. Their menu is pretty extensive with many options. I ordered the classic eggs benedicts and was happy with the choice. The portions are large, the potatoes were delicious and not overcooked! What I really liked is that the hollandaise sauce had a nice lemony flavor! Their coffee was the only thing I would not get again. When we left it felt like the whole staff including the kitchen staff said goodbye to us :)

Second time going, after the first experience felt lacking; both due to the food preparation, and service. But since there aren't many family style restaurants in the area -- I decided to give the spot another try about (4) months later. Regretful decision. Orded a simple mixed-berry waffle combo & asked that my eggs be prepared "fried hard". Why were the eggs literally jiggling, as the waitress set the plate down? She even noticed, but tried to walk away anyhow. I politely requested the eggs be prepped correctly, but kept the waffle. BTW: there's a $2 upcharge for fruit (which is common). But, why did my plate only come with EXACTLY (8) blueberries and the equivalent of 1.5 sliced strawberries?? To make matters worse, the waitress returned my plate with still runny egg yolks -- which I didn't eat, as I don't eat runny eggs. The biggest issue, besides the ill-prepared simple breakfast, was the attitude of the heavily-tattooed flamboyant guy managing the place. As the waitress explained to him why I was sending my plate back, he would look over at me / my table -- flailing his hands with a look of disgust. And at this point, I was the only one on that side of the little restaurant, so there was no mistaking the vibes. To cap it off, he later comes over to my table, literally leaning over my plate to arrogantly explain the 'fruity issue' (pun intended). I'd had enough, and asked him to give me some space, the bill, and a 'to go' box. A mild argument ensued, where he tried to belittle me by asking how long I've been in California, to not understand the price of fruit -- claiming "I've been here for (7) years, so even I know..." Buddy: I'm born & raised "Cali". But your attitude, lack of professionalism, and an inability to get a simple breakfast right are the real issues. I explained how this was my 2nd--and likely, last--time coming; to which he arrogantly suggested it should be. (If we were 'on the streets' this is the kind of behavior that might get you smacked in the mouth.) My suggestion: go to the Lighthouse Cafe (literally only a block away) for your Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, snacks...whatever. But "Caveat emptor" (may the buyer beware) if you choose to eat at this establishment. Not only is the food prep an issue, but the flamboyant arrogance of the little manager guy officially ensured I'll never patronize the Downtown Cafe EVER again. Interesting enough: I also haven't had a conflict with anyone regarding services--for at least (4+) years. Way to go, guy. No wonder the place was almost empty, when there's already very few eateries around.

Well my first time here. Pittsburgh's a little bit out of the way but I like to go to some nearby places sometimes.. nice little downtown area. Comfortable atmosphere relaxed. First of all probably the best coffee I've had anywhere very delicious I don't know what kind it is but I like it I wanted to get some more to go Was initially disappointed because it didn't have biscuits and gravy, the only thing that had gravy was the chicken fried steak and I wasn't going to try that it looked a little bit too heavy. I had the bacon and eggs with a country potatoes. The potatoes were delicious perfect cooked right. The eggs were okay bacon nice portions I like mine cooked a little more though. I asked for sourdough bread toast and it wasn't toasted so I was a little bit curious about that. But it worked. Staff was nice and attentive and I like the ambiance Have a nice diverse menu a lot of selections for a place that small I would recommend it

Decided to get out for some breakfast and tried the new cafe. You seat yourself & wait. The server was engaged in convo w/the cook & closing a tab so it took a couple mins to get a menu. There's quite a bit to choose from. I went w/a waffle combo. Waffle was fluffy & moist inside but could have used some crunch on the exterior. The berries were good. Over-medium eggs were cooked nicely, a minute longer would've been perfect for me. I asked for bacon but also got a sausage. The bacon was cooked nicely but it had that off aftertaste found in some bacon. It didn't ruin the meal, it's just one of those things that you get from time to time. Overall it was a good meal.

It was my first visiting for breakfast with my family. There was 5 of us and there were plenty of tables available inside and outside. We sat inside because it was a little cold for outside. Service was fast and friendly staff. Food was delicious and made to order. The coffee was delicious and endless of refills. Very basic and home style breakfast. Definitely will stop in again. read more

We came here on a Sunday just before 9am for breakfast. It was not very busy just yet so we came at a good time. The service was awesome and they checked in on use routinely to refill our coffee and make sure there wasn't anything else we needed. The menu had a lot of options which is nice to see, so you are sure to find something you like. The ambiance is a true downtown cafe/classic diner feel. The food came out amazing with very little wait time, and way better than those large chain breakfast places. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to try their biscuits as I was told they ran out already, but hey that's just another reason to come back and try again. They just opened Feb 2024 but is well on their way of becoming a hometown staple. read more

I dont know if we caught the cook on a bad day, or if we just got there too early. But I ordered a crab benedict and my wife ordered steak and eggs. Both of our plates had NO FLAVOR. We even added salt to our food and it still had no flavor, thats how bland it was. Portions were good and the service was fine, but thats all I can say about this place. read more

Came here on a Monday morning as a last minute resort as my original choice of restaurant was closed for Presidents' Day. The place is small but there were a few open tables. I was told I could pick a table and sit anywhere. The server was very polite but he seemed to be the only server and therefore pretty busy. I ordered the fruit and sausage with a latte. Unfortunately I was informed they could not make the latte so I opted for regular coffee instead. My friend ordered the fruit, and muffin. Unfortunately they were not serving muffins, so she opted for a coffee cake. The server showed us the coffee cake (which was in a refrigerator, in plastic wrap in an undated container along with a jug of milk, some other cream, and other various items) to confirm if it was still wanted. The cake being in the refrigerator (which is oddly located right near the table area not the kitchen) unmarked, just seemed a bit sketchy to me. My friend decided to just try it anyway. Our food came and I discovered my fruit was not fresh, and contained mold (as pictured). I wanted to get up and leave but my friend was nervous to "cause any trouble". I reluctantly ate my sausage and drank my coffee, not bad. My friend stated the coffee cake was okay as well. I asked the server to please take off the fruit and explained the mold situation. The server did take it off the bill, and said he was sorry about that. I tipped the server and paid for the rest of the items. I will not return, as I do not think their food quality and safety protocols are adequate. read more

To start, the food was ok, not very flavorful, but wasnt bad. Pancakes were tough. We ordered the special as well, which was fajitas omelet, again,not very much flavor, has to smother it in hot sauce. This stuff alone wouldnt make me rate it poorly if the pricing wasnt to high, but it was quite expensive for what it was, i could have eaten at Lumpys a few doors down with a lot of flavor, and its cheaper. But as i said, i got the fajitas omelet, it said on the sign in the front, 17.00, when billed, i got charged 18.71. And i thought 17 was expensive for an omelet, then overcharging made it worse. So its over 20 a person to eat here with drinks, plus when they give you toast, normally a place gives you 2, this place only gives you 1 slice of toast, so u run out way before you get done with your plate. The thing that added a star for me was the servers were nice. Though i did not get a refill til the very end when i had to flag em down, considering how small it is, seems odd to not check on it. Also we sat there done for about 10-15 min after receiving boxes, and no bill, so i just had to walk up to the register and tell them what table. Only tried it because it was open when other places were closed for Easter, but i would not go again. read more

This one specific Server works too fast. I went with my mother and grandparents. He skipped over my mom's drink order and went to grab only mine and my grandparents. Once he got my mom's order he brought it to the table, but since he was working too fast it caused him to spill it. Please work slower, the fast service is great but it would be better if worked a little slower and gave time. Otherwise the food is great. read more

Not so good experience with the food. Egg's Benedict not as expected, yolk should be "runny", burnt toasted bread, ham tastes different, and has an aftertaste. Overall, didn't meet our expectations..... about the service: she asked if she could take plates still with leftovers, and was still working on it when some family members were still eating and others just had their food served. Looking for a new breakfast place we tried out the new Downtown Cafe. I hade the chicken fried steak. So tender you could cut with a fork. Eggs were cooked perfectly and the country potatoes were outstanding! Wife had hash Benedict the hash is homemade and wonderful. Potatoes again perfect and poached eggs cooked perfectly. Most definitely will return. Recommend you check them out! read more

Hubby and I always try out new restaurants here in Pittsburg. Omgoodness I had a omelet and fried red potatoes. Good size serving! We came in around 2:25pm not realizing they closed at 3pm. The only reason I found out was because I couldn't believe they weren't busier - I looked it up online & noticed the time... That is to say that no one working here even mentioned this or made us feel the least but rushed. On the contrary, our server made incredible recommendations, shared details about a few of the options and made sure we had time to decide and were happy with our choices. Service - 13/10. The food was also amazing! This felt like having my favorite meal at home - upgraded comfort food, maybe? The portions are great and everything we tried was a win. If you're having trouble deciding between breakfast & lunch - ask your server and trust that they won't steer you wrong! We truly can't wait to go back. read more

Tried out breakfast in Sunday after church with a group of 8!!! Although place is small, they were able to accommodate our group pretty quick! Our server was friendly and smiled a lot. Breakfast was great. I had pancakes and eggs and bacon. Food was good and I loved the pancakes. Other's tried different breakfast items and everyone was satisfied with their meals. Only downfall is parking not great on the weekend, but worth the visit. Went back today for lunch and hamburgers tasted great! Not greasy at all. I loved the oldies music they play there. Wanted to like this place since the reviews seemed decent .. got there Friday morning place was pretty empty, ordered the corned beef hash .. OMG IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! put my plate w napkins off to the side and placed my credit card on the side of the table. Wanted to leave a tip but didn't have any change so I suppose I'll leave a review. My omelette was delicious and the customer service was great. I was greeted upon entry by a gentleman. Once the server was finished checking on tables, she came over to assist. I customized my order a bit and added sour cream on the side. Took me awhile to get to it but once I was able, I noticed it was made accurately. Good Job to the cooks as well. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out since they opened and I finally went today! The service was amazing! So friendly and quick. The food was AMAZING. I'm very picky when it comes to French toast and it was 10/10. My husband had the corn beef hash and he said it was 8/10. That's pretty high for him since he doesn't usually give high scores. Came here today for breakfast with my family, we were a group of 7 so we got seated outside. Which was fine it was busy. There was a male server who took our drink order and shortly after took our food order. The food took over 40 min, we understand it was busy but we noticed multiple tables leave after being seated way after us. The server did not check up on us at all, the busser brought our food out, sever never asked how our food was (some items were incorrect), or ask for refills. We had to go inside to ask for the check, and were never attended once after order. Last time we had amazing service, this time not at all. Don't dine outside or you'll be forgotten I guess. read more

My partner and I were looking for a more local place to eat for breakfast and stumbled upon this restaurant. Wow, we are glad we did. We shared a bowl of fruit and the chorizo burrito. They kindly split up all of our food onto separate plates/bowls. It all tasted so good! The fruit was fresh, the burrito was hot and tasty, and the breakfast potatoes!! Oh my gosh the best country potatoes I think I've had in a while. Our server was Jorge, he was super nice and attentive. Thank you so much for a great experience! I found this place on Yelp and was excited to try it because of its great location and friendly staff. However, I was really disappointed with the food. I ordered bacon and eggs, and while they were okay, the fries were so greasy that I couldn't eat them. On top of that, the place feels very old and in need of an update. The food was delish and fairly priced. My husband said his burger was great and the homemade potato salad was wonderful.... I had a very good breakfast (crispy bacon- yum!) Our server was very sweet and made us feel right at home! We recommend Downtown Cafe! read more

Great food, great portions, great service, great casual ambience. I've tried two different egg Benedicts (hash and crab) and they were the best I've had. Also the pancakes are top notch as well as the chicken picatta. The lady in the front is nice and efficient y se habla Español. The guys in the back really know what they're doing because the food is bangin'. read more

My husband and I supported this business when they opened because we beleive in sommunity support. The food is good and they will take time to make something for you different if not on the menu. I talk to the owner about working their however its seems to be a family business-not a good choice. Manager should consider hiring others that have food experience and public contacts read more

Every time I visit home I try to stop by Lumpy's to get this bad boy but they're always sold out. So this time around I came prepared. On Friday morning I called right when they opened at 7:00 AM to place a pre-order for 3 Pittsburgers ($25.17). The woman I spoke to on the phone said they're made around 9:45 AM, so I came back around 9:30 to pick them up. They were piping hot when I got them but unfortunately we ate them about 2 hours later because we brought them to an Alcatraz tour. These seem different from the ones I had when I went to PHS. They're definitely bigger and don't remember them being so dense (then again I haven't had one in ages). It's basically a Sloppy Joe with ground beef, a lot of ketchup, onions, cheese, and bread. Very simple ingredients but a ton of nostalgia. Anyone who went to PHS would say they adored the Pittsburger, so if you're feeling nostalgic on a Friday morning, definitely order one.

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and efficiency by the friendly staff. The menu offered a fantastic array of breakfast options, ranging from classic dishes like benedicts and omelettes to more unique offerings like Huevos Rancheros and Corn Beef Hash and Eggs. We both opted for the latter, and the portions were generous and the flavors were spot on. The Huevos Rancheros had just the right amount of kick, while the Corn Beef Hash was savory and satisfying.
