Good coffee. I'm not a coffee conoisseur, but when it tastes fancy, I know it. Wifi, but no outlets and uninspired setting for the seating. This is no place to lounge for any period of time, which is what I value in a coffeeshop. Sparse decor. Reminded me of a minimalist Amsterdam "coffeeshop" where the message is "We are serving one thing here and it is a drug. We don't need a bunch of fancy signs and bullsh*t. Buy your drug and leave." Been to Downtown Coffee only a couple of times within the last year. It's very small, and doesn't encourage sitting or lounging. It's also ran by one person, so be prepared to wait sometime if there's only 2-3 people in line. I'm a black coffee drinker, no lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, etc. Their regular coffee (which can differ day to day) is on the lighter side, when compared to Starbuck's regular coffee. It has a slight aroma of caramel which smells delightful as you bring to cup closer to drink. $2 for a 16 oz. is pretty generous in my book as well. read more

This was such a cute coffee shop hidden in the Pioneer Plaza in town! At first when I glanced at it, I thought, "It's too small." But man, do the greatest things come in small sizes!! I ordered a Matcha Green Tea Latte. Although I am not a latte fan, this was definitely good! Their servers were really nice and they all took the time to let you order instead of make you feel rushed. The counter area is small so it's pretty easy to navigate where to go. Also, they have the cutest little honey and expresso cups. I bought 2 mini honeys for my tea I drink at home and they're so cute. read more

Great little coffee shop in the heart of Downtown Honolulu. Staff and owners are warm and genuine, they make eye contact they remember their customers. In addition to a solid cup of coffee, they offer small selections of baked treats, like scones, muffins and oat bars/cakes, along with little apple pies and cheese cakes. (And if they run out or nothing calls, there's Hokulani's cupcakes right outside the door. Warm, sweet and cozy is how I like to describe this coffee shop. It's a small operation with big and bold flavors. They also support other Downtown local businesses with their sandwiches, pastries. Their matcha desserts are yum. I like fancy stuff so chai latte and mocha are my personal favorite here. Finding ourselves early for our meeting/company tour, I decided to check out Downtown Coffee (especially since I was using their wifi already :P). It's a small coffee shop located in Pioneer Plaza. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and offered me samples of their teas when I couldn't decide what to order. He also informed me that they roast their own coffee every week so it's always fresh. I think next time I find myself in the area and using their wifi, I'll head over and try a coffee drink :] The prices are a little expensive unfortunately and their small is in actuality a kiddy cup. read more

I had high hopes for this place but it turned out not the best. The folks there were very nice and friendly. The latte I had, however, was not good. It was bitter as if they had not dialed in the espresso before serving it. Not much else to say. It could be the barista. It could be the beans. It could be the equipment. This is a great little coffee shop downtown (hence the name!). It's small, but homey - very warm and welcoming. It may be a little more pricey than other coffee places, but the quality is way better! Their scones are delicious too!! I think they're homemade, it looks like they are...it's light and moist - very tasty! Service is friendly and I've never had a problem here. read more

I love Downtown Coffee! I work downtown so I walk by every day and stop in a few times a week for a morning and/or afternoon coffee fix. I should be clear that the only drinks I get are regular coffee and ice coffee... I'm not into all the fancier things. They have the best ice coffee around! The staff are really friendly. After a year or so of going there, they switched owners as the previous guy, Charles, is moving on to other things. Fred, the new owner, is a great guy as well and really brews a mean cup of coffee. And, I couldn't write a review of this place without mentioning that they have, BY FAR, the best pastries around. Seriously. Blueberry scones and a ton of really creative, less common options. You know, as a former barista and a little bit of a coffee snob, I can confidently say that Downtown Coffee is one of the best places in town to get some wonderful coffee. They have locally grown and roasted beans, and a lot of different treats and snacks that lean more toward the healthy side than the pastry side [here's looking at you, Starbuck's]. The store is small, and usually it's only one or two people working, so it can get a little backed up during heavy times. However, the owner's love and appreciation for coffee really shines through in the selection, and the beverages are well-made and delicious. I stop by here every day that I have class. Badass Coffee is closer to where I attend school, but I go out of my way to get my Downtown Coffee fix. They also offer free WiFi, which is accessible around the outside seating area. I'm really glad that I stumbled upon this place during my commute to school! read more

I am not a regular at Downtown Coffee but there is a lot to like. The staff is friendly and fast, two great ingredients for a coffee shop. I like the fact they roast their own beans and use 100% Hawaiian Coffee (unlike some "Hawaiian Coffees that are 10% Hawaiian and blends from mexico etc). I also like that they are not charging $5 a cup. Good spot and happy to have it downtown. read more

Downtown makes really good espresso drinks, and I believe the brewed coffee is some of the highest quality you can get in town. It's a great place to grab something to-go, but all the seating is outside. read more

If there's one thing I miss about Fort St Mall (and believe me, there really are only two things, tops), it's Downtown Coffee. Fred and his wife run a wonderful shop with excellent coffee. Service from other baristas vary (friendly folk, but not always the same quality as if Fred or his wife were behind the order) and it's a bit on the pricey side, but supporting local business is worth the extras here. There's also the added bonus of a heart or leaf shape from your cream when you order a latte. Corporate coffee just doesn't have that kind of joy in their coffee-making, and it's love that you can taste sometimes -- you know? read more

I've pretty much tried almost all of the coffee shops' Americanos in the downtown area, and this place is my favorite. Their regular Americano, iced or hot, is smooth, nutty and balanced. A splash of cream and simple syrup and it's perfect. I like it better than even their 100% Kona Fancy one. read more

This shop has THE best coffee. The drip and the espresso are both so fresh and aromatic that you don't even need sugar to cut the bitterness usually associated with coffee. The baked goods and macarons are great as well but their coffee outshines ALL. I would say best on the island. If you are picky about coffee this is the place to go! read more

4 1/2 stars... Been there twice in two days. Getting the drip coffee on my prior visits I was not too impressed, but after having a double espresso (intelligentsia beans) I was hooked. I'm not usually a "specialty" coffee drinker, opting for the easy drip coffee, so I can't exclaim that I think that this place makes the best espresso or anything, but it was damn tasty. I like the unassuming, but obviously well-cared for interior. This is not a place that has to advertise crazy blended drinks or obscure concoctions - it's pure and simple coffee. Today I had a drip coffee (Bolivian) on my way to work, and took it black, remembering how, previously, I had put cream in, and thought that it was a watered down brew because of how light it became. I guess I have a penchant for super dark (strong) brew, that stays dark even after adding lots of cream. Anyways, the coffee was smooth and tasty, without adding any cream or sugar - the sign of fresh brew and properly roasted beans. I can appreciate coffee in it's purity, and would definitely recommend trying it black first. read more

This is my spot!!!! I love this place. I guess you figured that out by now...hee hee ;) A perfect Saturday morning pick me up spot before trotting off to do errands. My thing to get is the Kona Fancy Latte with almond milk. It's always perfectly executed, smooth, hot and their coffee is fantastic. I grate some fresh nutmeg on top from their grinder and away I go. Content as a lamb. I love inhaling the smell of roasting coffee beans as you enter their door. Located downtown, they do close early on Saturdays @1pm I think. I found this out the hard way many times nose to door leaving empty handed. I'm not a big coffee fan - never liked the taste until I tried it here. The coffee at Downtown Coffee is the only coffee I drink. It's def. worth it! Tho their coffee is fantastic, I stopped drinking coffee all together & moved on to their matcha lattes - Heaven in a cup! I get mine with honey & almond milk steamed together. read more

I love this place!! After going to Pioneer Plaza for an appointment I stopped by here because I was in serious need of some coffee. The people who I'm assume are the owners were super nice. They specialize in coffee roasted on different islands. So when I asked them what was good they told me their coffee. Haha. I think I caught a little sarcasm there. But anyways. I ended up getting a large iced coffee with a shot of coconut. Seriously this coffee is amazing. It didn't need sugar or milk. The shot of coconut was enough to make it sweet. If your looking for good coffee? Come here. The coffee doesn't need sugar or creamer and the owners are nice. The best part is that your not going to be spending $5 for a small coffee!! read more

its interesting, coming from the mainland and always hearing about how great kona coffee is, i was very surprised to move here and not see very many coffee places! i lived in Washington state for 5 years (mostly in seattle) where there literally are coffee places across from each other, and yes even starbucks across from another. ok i get that seattle is sometimes cold and a lot of times gloomy, and that coffee might be more suited there, and that hawaii is more laid back and people dont 'need' coffee as much here... anyyyyways, my favorite espresso based drink is white mocha. downtown coffee came upon my radar with their maple white mocha and it is so far the best white mocha on da islan! read more

the coffee here is good and flavorful and not just colored water here. the workers are friendly and gave me lots of water that I kept asking for. they had the decency to give me the water in a nice tall glass cup since they charge for the plastic to go cups. most other places hand you the plastic cup and tell you they charge for water after. the green tea torte is excellent and tasty but a bit pricey for the small piece at $3.54 but it is a nice little treat. come here over starbucks and support local businesses read more

Yummy coffee, service not so. Had to repeat our simple order (two Americanos, small and medium, both decaf, with soy and with almost milk), like, five times, to the counter worker, when my friend and I were two of the three customers in store. Then had to repeat it to other worker at the register, since the original one had moved deeper into the store, to make our coffees. Why weren't they communicating with each other? Standing two, three feet away from their work colleagues, at that? The original counter guy said we needed to leave some kind of deposit/ID card in order to take out the bathroom key; then the woman who rung us up, who hadn't heard what he said, let us use it, sans collateral, anyway. We asked twice and got two different answers, deciding to go with the easier one (no ID card). Maybe the difference was, we had decided to buy the coffees, rather than just ask about where the toilet was, I dunno. But there are some basic communication issues going on, and in a store with a staff of two, that's not good. read more
