Ok, selfishly I hope this place doesn't get too popular because I like being able to get seats and service pretty easily...but this place deserves some serious hype. First, their cocktails are legitimately not only some of the best tiki bar drinks, but are some of the best cocktails you can get. Period. Absolutely on par, or better than Haberdashery on the other side of downtown SJ and Vesper in downtown Campbell (both also highly recommended tho!). The ingredients are primo. Flavor notes are often sweet but not too sweet, some a touch fruity, and definitely never syrupy. Complex flavors that linger in the best way. And the "secret" to many of the drinks is allspice dram. Seriously, these cocktails are worlds above typical novelty and sickeningly sweet and syrupy tiki/rum bars. My go tos are Nectar of the Gods and Rum Barrel. Atmosphere: often looks closed from outside because the only windows are nautical portholes on the entrance doors that are tinted dark, but inside is a warm, inviting, fully realized tiki bar on the cusp of theme park levels of decor. Food! Quite delicious! We've had a number of items so far and have always been happy, but our favorite is the spam fried rice. We ask them to hold the pineapple and the result is salty savory heaven. Finally, service has always been friendly for us but looks like the staff is sometimes spread thin and the drinks take some time to prepare (because they're lovingly crafted) so be patient (and nice) - it's worth it. read more

I've been to Dr. Funk a multitude of times since moving to the Bay. It's located ideally in San Pedro square but is almost hidden, if you're not paying attention you may miss it. The place is quaint with low lighting and an inviting atmosphere. It can get pretty crowded on weekends so finding a table isn't guaranteed without a reservation. Despite the crowd, it's never too loud so you can to have an actual conversation.The staff is almost always really attentive no matter how crowded the place may become. The drinks here are top notch. Really delicious and have their own unique flavors. Each drink has "X's" depicting how strong a drink is ranging from 1 to 3 X's. And believe me, this place is not watering down their drinks. Honestly the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is their food. Their fries and other finger food are fine. But I had the absolute worst chicken wings here. I don't recommend those to anyone. Dr. Funk is pretty much your typical tiki bar, themed decor, colorful lighting, and a wide range of rum cocktails that make you feel like you're on a tropical island instead of downtown San Jose. The space inside seems pretty small (there's probably more outdoor seating in the patio that wraps around the corner and parklet seating), though they do have several booth seats and tables inside. We opted to sit at the bar, while enjoying a few drinks. They were out of the Puka Punch on a Sunday night, but we had the Sidewinder's Fang (definitely tart), A.H. Cooler (the watermelon taste strong in this one), and Missionary's Downfall (which tasted pretty much like a mojito)... all of these cocktails presented nicely with beautiful colors and fresh fruit garnish, and so delicious. They were all labeled XX, but that ended up being stronger than I realized, be careful it will creep up on you. I loved that the menu included two types of labels for the drinks, not just the ingredients in detail. One label referred to the combination of tastes for each drink (spirited, funky, refreshing, fruity, minty, tropical, tart, boozy, etc.), which made it easier to make our selections. The other label noted how strong in alcohol content (X smooth sailing, XX tricky waters, XXX Beware! Limit Two), which made it easier to predict how tipsy we would be by the end of the night. The bartenders were attentive, super friendly, gave us suggestions based on what we liked, served us drink samples to make sure we liked our choices, answered our many questions, and provided efficient service. This is the tiki bar of tiki bars. Who needs Cheers when you got Dr. Funk! What a great place to chill and enjoy the vibes. Great music at the place last night. Bartenders signing along to the music and hyping the patrons. The food is great bar food with sandwiches, wings, nachos, curries, skewers, ribs, burgers! They have HAPPY HOUR!! and of course an ample selection on their dinner menu as well. This place has it all and everything is delicious. The drinks are on point and go down smooth. I've been here a few times and never got to review the place! The pirate/sunken ship theme is so cute and fun and i love their patio seating in the front where u can people watch. Inside is also very popular with dimmly lit hawaiian tiki theme going on. It's just too loud for me. I like to order the Mai tai bc it's refreshing and strong. I feel like suken ship is everybody's go-to though. I've tried the curry fries and they r filling and delicious! It was super crowded on Thur evening around 6pm with a queue to get seated which i hadnt experienced before. Came a little earlier on a Fri around 4:30pm and it was very empty before the rush. A lovely place for a drink in downtown San Jose. Sure, it will be crowded on a weekend night but they do take reservations so you can lock in your seats if you're able to plan enough ahead. The drinks are tropical and strong and come out very fast. I was impressed with how attentive their service was and with the quality of the drinks (even if they obviously have stuff mixed in advance.) Bonus: on Sharks game nights they have some rad specials. I have been here on two separate occasions now. The first time was on a Sunday evening, when it was not crowded at all. The second time was on a Saturday evening, when it was pretty crowded. Food: The first time I came, I got the impossible burger. The burger was ultimately okay, but their fries were good. The burger didn't feel seasoned enough. The second time I came, I wanted to order the burger again to see if there was a difference. They were sold out of the burger that day, so I got the mushroom curry instead. The mushroom curry was absolutely delicious. It was flavorful and filled with all the veggies I love. Drinks: Their drinks are on the pricey side, though standard for the area. I enjoy how the menu tells you the keynotes of the drink (refreshing and fruity, etc). Their mai tai is definitely worth trying. Their other drinks are complex and there is some good variety. Service: Service both times was pretty good, even when they were pretty busy. I got lucky both times I've been here to be able to get a table upon arriving. It is sometimes a little hard to get more water as the servers are running around doing other things. However, service is pretty solid otherwise. Came on a Sat evening. Was able to get a seat at the bar quickly. Very friendly bartender staff. We were checked on several times. Not pictured but also ordered fries and it was a pretty big portion. The inside decor was beautiful and gave a total feel of a tiki lounge. Place was a little dim (as intended) but lively atmosphere. Dr Funk is a gem. Maybe even a diamond in the rough of San Pedro. We went on a night that was not too busy. The bar was not empty but did not feel crowded. Bartender was attentive. Manager was there checking in on us and even made some recommendations. First the good--all the cocktails. I love consistent good cocktails that pack a punch without making you feel like you are drinking straight from the bottle. We had to try the Mai Tai which the manager said she has been told is one of the best around. I would have to agree with those who told her that. It is good. She recommended some of the new cocktails on the menu, as well. Me being a whiskey drinker, I tried the Boozy Beachbum. My wife got the Espresso Oasis (martini). We have not been too big of rum drinkers before but after all of this, I would say I am now a rum drinker. All the cocktails were amazing. What would I change? The food. Not bad but not great. We got an order of wings and nacho fries. Wings came with sauce on the side. I prefer them to be tossed. Nacho Fries??? had bacon, some kind of cream and cheese. Nothing I would consider nacho. Saw the great reviews about this place on Google and decided to give it a try. I went on Halloween and it was definitely a ghost town in there. Only myself and one other customer was in there. My waitress was very nice and attentive (obviously, there weren't many people there)! As far as the food I was a little underwhelmed. It was good, but it wasn't spectacular. I ordered the shipwreck for my cocktail and for my entrée the fish and chips. I loved the presentation of the cocktail, very cute. The fish and chips were good, but not amazing. The place was packed for 5pm on a Saturday night but we got good service and the food was great. I had the JUNGLE BIRD drink: Cruzan Black Strap Rum, Campari, pineapple, lime, turbinado. I really liked this. a bit of spice and tartness. Not too strong. For dinner, I had the MUSHROOM CURRY: masala curry, coconut milk, shiitake mushrooms, potatoes, veggies, rice. This was a bit spicy for me but super flavorful. A big portion. Nicely cooked. One friend had the CHICKEN SKEWERS: soy, ginger & garlic marinade, sesame, onion, bell pepper, cilantro, lemongrass-lime glaze, seasoned rice. She really liked these skewers. Tasty meat, good sauce. My other friend had the DR. FUNK'S BURGER: 100% Angus beef patty, shredded iceberg lettuce, cheddar cheese, diced onions, pickles, Dr. Funk's secret sauce, buttered sesame seed bun. There is no confusion that when you walk into Dr. Funk, you are in a tiki bar. From the individual tiki hut tables, to the puffer fish light and the map on the ceiling, this place sucks you into the tiki the moment you walk in. Though not at exciting or elaborate as the inside, they even made sure to add some tropical tiki aspects to their outside seating area. The cocktail menu is extremely extensive boasting 20+ drinks, so if you're indecisive or have bad eye sight (it's really dark in there) you may want to take a look at the menu before your visit. I didn't do this and ended up using my phone light to read through about half of the drinks before I was tired of reading and just picked one. I ended up ordering the second sail and absolutely loved it, it was full of flavor and booze - which let's be real at $14 it better be nice on boozy. Would definitely order this drink again, but with so many to choose from I'll have to try some others before it makes its return. When we came it was sort of an odd time and there were only two other parties in there and just the one bartender. We weren't exactly sure if we were supposed to go to the bar and order, grab a seat ourselves and be waited on or what. Ended up grabbing a table and the bartender came and took our orders. Eventually two servers arrived and each of them took turns waiting on us. Hoping it's a little less confusing next time. If you're going to this place for ambience or to maybe feel like you're in Hawaii than this is a good spot. If you're going for food and drinks you might want to take extra money lol. The food itself was OK but pretty pricey and small portions. The drinks on the menu were not great. My friend got a margarita and wasn't too thrilled with it I got some thing with rum and it was far too strong and tasted like I had half the bottle of rum poured into my glass. The place was very busy, warm and I remember the water temp seeming like it was room temperature, wasn't served with ice and tasted like it was from the sink not even filtered. The service here is not bad at all because it seemed like there were servers constantly at our table asking if we needed anything so I don't know if they were trying to rush us out or they are just that polite and care about their customers? Great vibes and good drinks. The decor is what you'd expect from a decked out tiki bar. Went around 8 and had it had a fair amount of people for a Tuesday night and still had plenty of seating indoors. Our server was very helpful with our drink recommendations and was able to make some good selections. I cant remember the 3 drinks I tried, but all of them tasted really good and refreshing and I would get them again. Fries could have been more crispy. I have been here previously and we were seated outside, on the side of the building. Because it was a busy night and our seats were secluded from the main area, the service was very slow. On a positive note, the drinks were very good and strong! Be conscious of the Xs next to the drinks, which indicate how strong they are. You get your money's worth. I have also been here for Happy Hour and loved it. The food, drinks, service, and ambiance were awesome. Happy Hour is Monday to Thursday from 4-7 pm. They have a selection of $10 cocktails and small bites from $5-10.  From their Happy Hour menu, I ordered:  Puka Punch: Sweet but strong Missionary's Downfall: Nice and refreshing Curry Fries: Delicious sauce Coconut Shrimp: Perfectly crispy Even if you're seated outside, go check out the interior! A great new Tiki Bar addition to DTSJ! I ordered the Siren's shore, which is inspired by the Thai dessert mango sticky rice. Drinks are mostly priced around $14-$17. The menu has a (XXX) rating level to show how strong the drinks are. I believe my drink only had one X, which I would very much agree with since I could not even taste any alcohol. I would maybe opt for XX or XXX drinks next time! Service was pretty slow as there one was only one server and one bartender on a Sunday evening. As customers started coming in, service was even slower. I'm sure the vibe would be different on a Friday or Saturday night, but the ambience was laid back when I went! I think some tropical tiki music would be a great addition to the ambience because there was no music playing at all during my visit. Such a cute tiki spot. They had a DJ playing oldies or island music or something of the nature. The bartenders were super nice and attentive! Drinks -drink of the gods-started off with this cocktails and it was STRONG. Easy to drink too. Never really feel like $17 cocktails str worth it but this one got me tipsy right off the bat and that is not an easy feat -mai tai pa-on the menu as a tropical ipa. It was okay! The first time I came here I saw a drink with fire and wanted it. It was called the Phoenix Rising. I'm not a fan of Mezcal but this drink was really good! The smokey taste that Mezcal usually has wasn't over powering and actually complemented the drink!
