Location is easy to miss. As you enter San Pedro square look to your left and you will see Dr. Funk tucked in between other bars and restaurants. It's a small location, I wanted to visit for the Halloween theme cocktails and decor. Well lit, the specialty drinks weren't the best (beetle juice theme) perhaps it was just our taste buds but they were gorgeous. The staff was friendly and attentive. Everywhere you look in this place it was something different to take in. Very much a tropical tiki oasis in downtown San Jose. We then went for a standard margarita, no frills. It was decent. This one is located near San Pedro Market so easy to get to and lots of parking but we have had mixed results with the restaurants and bars down here. We didn't have reservations, had wanted to sit at the bar but it was full. The host was very accommodating and got us a table right near the bar. The inside was fully decked out for Christmas (like a grinch theme) which was fun. We got drinks and food. They had a holiday drink menu too (also grinch themed). The drinks were great. We got chicken wings and spam fried rice to snack on which were good. You have to go get your own water but everything else you order at table which seemed a little weird. It is always nice to find new gems when visiting home. I moved away from San Jose in 2015 and now reside in Las Vegas where the tiki scene is popping. That said, I have always felt intimidated by these magical places so I never visited a tiki bar until stumbling upon Dr. Funk in the old Peggy Sue's diner location. Upon entering, the scent of fresh mint and pineapple tickled my senses. The Justins greeted us and took the time to explain the menu and rum selections. We watched as our cocktails were finely crafted. Since we were there early, food was not ready at first, but the Justins made sure to place a priority order so our chicken wings were piping hot! This place is a hidden gem located in downtown San Jose. Wanted to try some new, interesting and tasty cocktails, and we definitely found that here. I ordered the Distant Sunset which was super tasty. Along with, Drink of the Gods which was strong in alcohol content and tasty (really rare to find nowadays). Our server was great, very attentive and outgoing. We asked him what appetizers he would suggest to go with our drinks, and he recommended the coconut shrimp which did pair really well. If you want to catch a quick buzz and amazing atmosphere, Dr. Funk is the place to be at! We came here on a Friday night and were quickly seated on a table outside. I do recommend seeing if there is a table available inside or at least walking inside to catch a glimpse of the nice interior however. We got the Puka Punch bowl to share and the presentation was really nice! I was disappointed that they downgraded the size however. Extra word vomiting, lessgo!!!!! ------------------- This tiki bar is primarily focused on rum-based drinks and I do quite like the rum here. The cocktails that I tried were the sidewinder's fang and queen's park swizzle. If you love sweet tropical cocktails the sidewinder's fang would be right up your alley. I personally enjoyed the queen park swizzle even more though because of the fun citrusy sour punch to it. The food that I also tried was decent.....it definitely hit certain cravings while drinking hahaha. The fish and chips: the fish was not the most succulent but was still scrumptiously crispy and the chips were like freshly prepared McDonalds fries (IYKYK when you want 'em!). Chicken skewers: reminded me of L&L teriyaki chicken thighs loool kinda one note on the heavy soy sauce taste but I wasn't mad about it at all; the skewers also were pretty hefty. You could argue that I should dock a star for the food to not lean on specific (cheap but not cheap here) food cravings, but in that case I would still redeem a star for the ambiance and service. Loved the colorful lighting and themed decor here (one of the better decorated tiki bars that I've been to for sure) and the server was friendly and attentive. Came here just after 10 on a Friday night with a group of 6. We tried to find a spot inside but would have been fine sitting outside, too. We asked one of the staff if it a corner booth was actually reserved, and they said yes. However, while we were heading outside, the waiter came up to us and let us sit at the booth. My wife and I came here with our two kids since they were permitted as long as the kitchen was open. We ordered fries for the kids, chicken wings (with some addictive dipping sauce) and coconut shrimp, all of which were fantastic. Our servers were very friendly and always came by to check on us. I really wanted to like Dr. Funk after seeing all the hype on Instagram and TikTok, but it ended up being a disappointment. The Halloween decorations were very lackluster, they looked like basic Home Depot statues rather than anything immersive or high quality. For a place that leans so heavily into its theme, the production value just wasn't there. The drinks were another letdown. Every cocktail basically tasted like straight, cheap rum, even though the menu lists tons of ingredients and fun flavors. They all somehow ended up tasting the same. The festive drinks are all about $21 each. I'm not a picky drinker but trust me, skip the drinks. The staff was polite, but not particularly warm or attentive. They noticed we didn't touch our drinks but didn't check in to see if we liked them or wanted something else. I like this place. It's worth it to me to spend the money on a fun drink and very friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. However, I was charged for two drinks, one of which was spilled and the bartender offered to replace for me. I also thought I was overcharged for a ham and cheese toastie when I realized I ordered the fries with nacho-toppings. The price is increased, and the receipt doesn't reflect the add on. I'm not sure if they mention it on the menu, but they also charge an additional 4% living wage on the bill. This is done a lot in San Francisco, and I haven't seen it as much in San Jose. read more

The girl in front of us was waiting in line and once she got to the front she let the bouncer know she was waiting on ELEVEN other friends. Def awesome tiki bar vibes inside, we came on a Sunday evening for the grinch theme. it took a little bit to get a table even though it wasn't busy. We were greeted by a waiter and then gave our drink order, I ordered the Cindy Lou Apple and my husband ordered the mean one. I also ordered the curry fries. I've been recently on a president's day with a friend after having an all-you-can eat feast nearby at gyu-kaku, and we wanted to cap it off with a couple drinks. It was pretty quiet for a Monday night but they had a sharks special and an additional brewery takeover. We took advantage of the cheaper mai tai's ($8 Mai tai Mondays!) then switched over to the non-alcoholics. Service was quick especially bc we were sat at the bar. A little bit more disappointing though - we went on a Sunday afternoon during Memorial Day weekend and found out there is no food on Sundays! The interior of Dr. Funk definitely has nice tiki bar vibes, but the patio isn't that decorated so I'd recommend leaving your pups at home to fully enjoy the ambiance. We brought our pup along with us so we had to sit outside, but it was still quite nice. I ordered the Culpepper's Remedy and my boyfriend got the Dr. Funk and some fries to share. I love that the menu has Xs to rate how strong the drinks are and a detailed description of the flavor profiles. Drinks here are are rated X, XX or XXX for how strong they are. We got one of each. -Phoenix Rising (XX) - The favorite at our table! I probably should have expected this from the name, but I was pleasantly surprised when the waitress lit the drink on fire! The flame can get pretty tall. Definitely a fun and photo-worthy drink. The flavors in this drink are delicious! A perfect blend of creamy, tropical, and spicy. -Zombie (XXX) - This was STRONG. XXX drinks are limited to 2, and we could tell why. It got my friend good LOL. This one uses 4 rums including 151. Enough said! -Jungle Bird (X) - This one was alright. The ice cube was quite large so it felt like there was barely any drink. It was a more simple drink, with a shorter ingredient list than other drinks. There is HH here from 4-7 Monday to Thursday (except SAP events nights). When we arrived, there was a long line outside. Once seated, we were explicitly told by the waiter to order through them instead of at the bar because ordering at the bar would "take longer." Spoiler alert! It didn't make a difference. In hindsight, it might have actually been better to order at the bar instead. We placed our drink order and then waited...and waited...and waited. We even took a peep inside the bar to look at the Xmas decorations and it was NOT busy at all! 30 minutes passed, and we checked in with our waiter, who said they would look into it. That clearly didn't happen as they likely forgot to submit our order. Other tables around us, some of which were seated way before us, were also frustrated and waiting endlessly for their drinks. Finally, after a painful 45 minutes, our drinks arrived just as we were about to get up and leave. The wait was not worth it. The drinks were absurdly small, packed to the brim with ice, and honestly felt like a ripoff for what we paid ($18 per drink). The entire experience was beyond disappointing. The bar seemed more focused on raking in as much money as possible than providing an remotely decent experience for its customers. All of the food that we had was delicious, I even forgot to take a picture of the burger!! The coconut shrimp were almost all gone too by the time I took the photo. The Dead Man's Isle and Siren's Shore are definitely a couple popular ones. My group of friends tried the Scorpion, which is a HUGE bowl with citrus, pineapple, and flowers on top.
