Whenever I'm in town for a game, I end up in Dr. Funk's. It's honestly the best joint downtown. No other establishment comes close. The staff are so fly--they always make you feel comfortable, like you're a regular when you only come to town twice a year. Everyone here works their dang tushes off. I've never seen a single staff member lounging about. Drinks are handmade to order and just divine. There are other establishments nearby that only do batch cocktails, but not at Dr. Funk's. The quality is unmatched. I'd be remiss not to mention the interior--it is always on point, but the holiday decorations and themed drinks are absolutely fantastic. I went there last night and i meet a server with a childish attitude called Dave (not sure if thats his real name he didn't have a name tag) a guy, shorty, asian, zesty. Dave took my old drink and brought a new one by accident he took my straw. I went to get one myself so i dont have to call him over a straw when i tried to get it he came up to me in the zestiest possible way " what d F are you doing " " you want me have someone to take you out " I waited on my table to see if he was gonna take me out but he didn't. Been here a few times. Tiki bar with good vibes. This time I made a reservation to sit at the table inside and when we got there, they said the inside was being used for a special event, but it wasn't listed when I made the reservation. We did sit outside and when a table became available, the waiter was kind enough to move us inside for the nightmare before Christmas Holiday layover. The drinks are always delicious. The dessert was good. The fried rice and the curry fries are delicious. I only gave it four stars just because the reservation situation was not communicate till we got in there. Customer service was a little slow. However, the guy serving is really nice and was trying to take us inside. I think they were very short on servers that day with an event. We came to Dr. Funk for the first time today. Sadly, it's unlikely we will return. There are 4 drinkers at the table and the only person happy with their drink is the person who drank a beer. The drinks we ordered had no hint of fresh fruit juice, cheap alcohol, and had a medicinal taste. No tropical aspect at all. The cups were packed with ice and were small and plastic. We suspect the cups were due to the event but the charge should be 50% less. We also think maybe the ratios were off due to the cups and ice. Not really sure but at $17 a drink, you expect it to taste good. Especially from a tiki bar. We just walked away from $34 worth of no bueno and one of the drinks was consumed just because of the principle that he can't walk away. On a positive note, the staff is very nice and cute. The food we had was very good. The mushroom curry is very flavorful. I would've liked more substance, it's mostly sauce but the flavor is really good. The spam fried rice was also very good. The spam was crispy and the flavor profile of the rice was good. We are used to Forbidden Island in Alameda for the drink quality, so it's probably hard to go to any place with less quality but it's sad that we were so disappointed in the drinks. I want to express that the only reason why this establishment gets an extra star is due to the fact that Chaz accommodated and listened to our concerns about a couple of drinks we had that tasted awful. I would highly suggest to stay away from the nightmare before Christmas drinks because they're extremely strong in taste and disappointing in taste. They were recommended as sweeter and they were not. The first person that served us was horrible. He completely walked away when we talked him that the drinks weren't like he said. He then went to the manager and left multiple times and talked about things that weren't related to our tab. He didn't close out our tab until we called him out and asked for it to be closed. Which he then grabbed Chaz who then made the situation much better. I would highly suggest not to get the drinks since each one cost a minimum of $20. read more

Since it was the day after valentines though, all of the inside seating was being used for reservations so we sat outside (I'm not sure if this would be different when it's not valentines weekend). We wanted the inside but the fire was still so cute and cozy and we enjoyed the ambiance. I had asked the waiter if we could get inside seating at all, and we were able to sit at the bar towards the end! Service was so good the whole night, every staff member is attentive and helpful. I've been here a few times over the course of the past year it's easily the best tiki bar in the area! The vibes are great (especially when they went full Grinch during the holidays), the service is wonderful, and their food is surprisingly very good! I've tried their curry, which I had very low hopes for considering its a primarily a bar, but it was so yummy! I also love that their servers are HONEST. For instance, when I tried to order a drink, my server shared their honest review of it and gave me alternative recommendations. I ended up liking the recommendations soooo much more! The only thing you should be aware of is that this place can be terrible during Sharks game. There is tons of traffic getting into the area, the San Pedro lot does not validate on game days, and there is no happy hour when a game is going on. I'm sure its a great place to watch the game/pregame before heading to the stadium but if you're not interested in that, its best to avoid coming on the same day as a Sharks game! read more

Initially, I had sticker shock looking at the menu, but they're comparable to other tiki bar prices, and the Dr. Funk drinks are flavorful as they are potent. Tiki in the South Bay? Sure, why not? Believe it or not, Dr. Funk isn't the name of a locally popular R&B DJ. The name refers to Dr. Bernhard Funk who practiced tropical mixology in the South Pacific for 31 years back at the end of the 19th century. In tribute, this spacious tiki bar was opened in the always congested San Pedro Square where it appears to attract the locals in droves. Jamie W. and I met our friends Carlos and Jack for a long-awaited reunion and decided to start our evening here. We stayed out in the patio since it was balmy out. They offered about nine classic tiki drinks and eleven more artisan cocktails presumably of their own creation. The four of us ordered two of those cocktails in pairs as they were the most tropical of the bunch. Managed to catch the Valentine's pop-up on the last day! Wasn't able to spend too much time but I really liked it. The bouncer asked if we were all together and we told him we didn't know where to throw an empty can out, he then proceeded to deny us entry because we were "publicly drinking"... tried going to another bar-- DENIED. Absolutely ridiculous and have never had this happen, it may be "policy" but my friend NEVER drank on the street. He was tipping the can over to see if it was empty (if this was a bar in SF, they would tell us to throw the drink out even if they saw us drinking it in line + they would STILL let us in). This is based on the Christmas Grinch themed bar. I think I'd rate it a 3.5 out of 5. We went on a Friday night, early in December. There was a 90 minute wait to be seated inside (where the decorations are located), no wait to be seated outside. We chose to sit outside....at least they had heat lamps - it was cold! A couple of us ordered from the Grinch drink menu. One of the drinks was SO strong and had a strange aftertaste. Every time someone took a sip from it, they made a grumpy grinch face! I ordered a tequila drink from the main menu. It was probably everyone's favorite. The drinks are all on the sweet side - even the non alcoholic drinks! Decided to try this place last night with a group of 5. We ordered 3 drinks and then asked the waiter to come back in 2 minutes because our 5th friend had just walked in. It took 10 minutes to flag down another server. It's wasn't particularly busy at 8pm, but it took 20 minutes to get our drinks. We each got something different at $18+ each, and they were all disgusting. We didn't finish them. 20 minutes after we received our first drinks, our last friend still hadn't received her drink, so we tried to cancel it. The server went and found it and charged me for it. Turned out it wasn't even the drink she ordered and was the nastiest black liquorice drink you can imagine. It was super annoying to have to server watch me use the card reader that suggested a minimum of 18% tip on a $100 round of drinks we couldn't even finish and terrible service. Tuesday night and we had about 8 people, we sat out on the patio and it was a great time. The music inside was a bit too loud but it was just right outside, especially if you wanna have some conversations. We ordered a bunch of different drinks and they are strong. I got the Puka Punch and it definitely packed a punch. The drinks are themed and have a very tropical vibe to them. The tiki decor isn't too much, just fun! The waiter was extremely friendly and took pictures for us. The water jugs were replenished frequently, it was a slower night but I feel like the staff would be attentive even if it was a weekend. My friends and I get pulled to the front of the line, not notified that we were going to be seated outside until we were near our seats. This is fine. We were able to take a peek later. Decor inside is cute. Outside, not so much. My biggest gripe was the wait and service. It took forever for our waiter to serve us. We waited patiently since the hostess told us ordering at the bar would take longer. After ordering it took over 30 minutes to get our drink! OVER 30 MINUTES FROM ORDERING. No one checked in on us. We should have just left. When we looked inside, it didn't even look jammed packed. We looked around and some tables near us also looked super unhappy and quite thirsty (no drinks except water on their tables). Most of us ordered from the holiday menu, and I understand that this is a tiki bar, but there was NO EFFORT or Christmas cheer put into the drinks. The most effort was the one toasted marshmallow. The drinks were served in plastic cups with little effort put into the aesthetics. Not a great way to spend $18....Mid all around.
