I have come to this Shell location for my state inspections and other vehicle maintenance before because the service has always been good. Yes, there can be a wait at times, and it can be frustrating but they do their best. And that's to be expected at a busy shop and the quality of the service makes it worth it. I especially wanted to recognize two employees who truly stood out during my most recent visit. Jose, who performed my brake fluid service and cabin air filter replacement. He was very friendly, approachable, knowledgeable, and clearly takes pride in his work. He answered my questions, explained everything well and made me feel confident that my vehicle was in good hands. I also want to recognize Samantha at the front counter. She was awesome, great personality welcoming, and kind to every customer who walked through the door. What impressed me the most was watching her go out of her way to speak Spanish with several Hispanic customers, even though Spanish is not her first language. She didn't have to do that, but she is teaching herself Spanish so she can better serve others. To me, that speaks volumes about her commitment to excellent customer service. Both Jose and Samantha worked incredibly hard during my visit and made the experience a positive one. If you want to be taken advantage of then this is your place. Came for a state inspection. They failed me and explained what needed to be fixed. They quoted $4,000+ repair and they even offered to pay for an Uber to get me home while they worked on the car. Since $4,000 isn't pocket change, I went and got a second opinion at another car repair shop and was quoted $150. Was I taken advantage of because I'm a woman? Very poor customer service and an unwillingness to accept responsibility for their mistakes. We were in a line of cars to get an inspection. We were waiting for longer than 15 minutes when the manager came and changed the sign to "closed" without saying anything to us. We followed him back into the station to ask what the situation was and he said he didn't have time to inspect our car. We pushed back since we had already been waiting and his response was basically that we were out of luck because they were closed. This type of flippant disregard for others' time and a dismissive attitude towards customer service should serbe as a warning; get your inspection somewhere where your time is valued. This used to be a trustworthy Local service station where I brought all my cars for service with no problems for over ten years. However, they are now no better than a bunch of scammers preying on unsuspecting locals. They sold a brake fluid change to my wife for a two year old Honda with less than 15,000 miles when she brought her car in for an oil change. They did the same to my naive son with his car after they had done the brakes on the same car under my name just 18 months ago. And they tried to talk me into the same brake fluid job because they had forgotten they had just redone my brakes less than a year ago! I'm done with them... Got my state inspection done today! -- I waited roughly about 1.5hrs to get my inspection done. 15 mins for the actual inspection and the rest of the time was waiting in line because there were 3 cars ahead of me. Which isn't a deterrent for me to come back since the actual inspection time wasn't that long. Anyways, very fast and efficient (and friendly); seriously no hassle getting things done. So when I arrived today and saw their signing advertising an oil change for $29.99, I thought it was business as usual - until I was billed $50!! The explanation I got? The $29.99 was just for labor. This business is under new management (Gabe). I brought my car as it had failed emissions, I was really taken for a ride, and I was suspicious from the beginning. So Gabe took in my car to be diagnosed, I gave him my failed report, so he had everything he needed to know to quote me what the repair would require, however he called me to tell me that it would be $900. Over the phone I told him thank you but NO to the service. What he said did not make any sense to replace a sensor only. Instead, when I came back to pick up my car, he had made a bill for $150 for diagnosing the car, he really didn't do anything. I was so upset. And I complained to the cashier who spoke my language, he smiled in approval that this is the way this business operates under this new management. I do not recommend coming to do any service nor buying gas from them. Customers look for places to repair but there is so much lack on integrity. I want my $150 back. I asked him for reasons as to why he charged me, he couldn't explain. Oh well, guess what, I'm not coming back to fill up my 5 cars with gas nor do I will bring any of my cars for oil changes. Good place for inspection but I had the unfortunate experience of interacting with the cashier. Her name was Mimi and when I asked if they did cashback she sassed me and rudely told me no. I tried to explain to her that only last week I came and got cash back and to my surprise she hissed at me in a very uncomfortable manner and obscenely told me to leave or she would call the cops. Whenever I drive by and see her working I just drive away to a different shell. It's a shame I have to choose a different location because of incompetent and unfriendly cashiers. read more

Currently waiting in line for an inspection. This place is SO much better than the shell up the street. This place has won over my business time and time again in comparison to the other shell up the street. They average 15 minutes a car for inspection while the other shell averages 30-40 minutes! Stay away from this place. My wife drove our 2000 Lincoln Navigator there for an annual safety inspection. The guy inspecting the cars is the same one that has been there for years. My wife and I trusted them until this year (I guess the economy makes everyone crazy) The guy there said we needed to replace our brakes all the way around and Both left and right idler arms needed to be replaced. if this was true it would cost about $1000.00 bucks. Here's the rub, I took the car to another shop and first thing they told me was, "There is only a left-side idler arm and it looks fine". They also checked out the brakes and said they will need to be replaced later this year or next but there definitely as enough pad to pass inspection. I decided to have the pads replaced and the rotors turned even though they were acceptable, family safety is a very important thing. Due to this experience I won't even buy gasoline from this place. read more

I agree with the previous reviewer. AVOID THE INSPECTOR AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!! The inspector (short grey hair with earring) is dishonest. He did not inspect my brakes but then FAILED MY vehicle for brakes. I inspected the brakes and found nothing wrong with them. The inspector is a liar. He is always in a grumpy mood and I really don't recommend taking your vehicle there. YOU WILL REGRET IT. I think they are running a racket there. I came in to get a safety inspection and I left out paying $214.60. They said I needed a rear tire, windshield wipers and two brake lights in the back. The tire alone was $140 and it was an off brand tire. I asked how many miles I get on this tire he said 55 miles I said that sucks and paid my bill. Nothing I needed was expensive but add labor and your in the hundreds. I was totally over charged the tire they put on my car is $60 new. But oh well you live and learn. I have been a customer of Sugarland for years with both my vintage BMW and contemporary SUV. I have had everything from an oil change to significant repairs. All have been done thoroughly as fast as possible. At times there is a bit of a wait because they are usually busy. We stumbled across this place in March 2008 when we moved to Reston. We were attempting to replace a CV joint in one of our Honda Civics, which we had done successfully 3 times before, but this one had a seized nut that wouldn't budge with elbow grease alone. My husband called around and they were the only place he could that would take our part and do the work. They also gave us a reasonable price, we thought. So we brought them our other Honda that had an exhaust leak that was only heard when you started the car. We had had most of the exhaust system replaced recently before the leak appeared. We had been to two other trusted mechanics (including my brother, an ASE certified mechanic!) - and several that it turns out that we couldn't trust - but no one could find it. Sugarland Shell found it! A small crack in the exhaust manifold visible under our O2 sensor that closed once the engine heated up. I bought a manifold/catalytic online and just paid for the labor for them to install it. That saved me hundreds! We were told by Merchants in Reston that we needed new shocks and struts (Stay away from Merchants!!!). Well, we decided to have the work done at Sugarland Shell, but they turned us away saying that we didn't need them and saving us money. In 2009 we had a slave and master cylinder leak and while Sugarland was working on it we asked them if we needed a new clutch. They adjusted it for us and said there was life left in it - again saving us money. My car is actually there right now getting a new clutch and they wanted to know why we wanted it, had we had any trouble? I think it has started slipping a little lately and since it's the original clutch while it was in for other repairs I wanted it done, but they didn't think it was really necessary at this moment based on a test drive so they called first to make sure. I'm sorry that the original poster had the problem with the idler arms. I wonder what would have caused it because we've gotten nothing but honest service from these guys for the above mentioned work and lots of other things (our cars are 13 and 14 years old!) and they charge a very reasonable rate. I recommend them to all of my friends. Plus, I like that being a woman who knows something about cars I don't get a mechanic trying to talk down to me or belittling my knowledge when I go in. Only mechanic I trust. You'd think changing the oil is straightforward, but after Sear's Dulles stripped my oil pan drain plug by over-tightening, Sugarland Shell fixed it. I brought it here religiously, until the one time I made the mistake of taking it to my neighborhood mechanic, where they again over-tightened and ruined the fix. Waste of my time! Arrived at 11 am for a sticker and the girl stated their were two people in front of me, so I decided to come back later as I work down the street. I came back at 3:30 and the inspection garage was open so I waited in the appropriate spot. After about 10 minutes of waiting I saw an employee walk out of the garage and look at me then go to the corner of the building to move cones that were in front of his grey Dodge Charger. He pulled his car out and got out of his car and gave me a tough guy look?? then put the cones back and drove away. About 5 minutes later another employee came up to me and asked if I was waiting for a sticker after now 15 minutes....Clearly I was based on my location. He then said the sticker guy went home?? I asked if it was the guy in the grey car and he said yes. I said why didn't he just tell me?? He said he didn't know. Just poor business and a joke! I don't think I would feel comfortable with that technician being fair in giving me a sticker. I went across the street to a place called Sunshine and they were professional, fast and nice. Go see Mike! VA Tire & Auto failed my car's safety inspection for rear brakes and gave me an estimate of over $700 for some other bogus work that did't sit well with me. So I took it to Sugarland Shell and Mike was totally honest with me and showed me how my brakes were in great condition. So my car passed it's safety inspection because Mike and Sugarland Shell are honest mechanics; whereas VA Tire & Auto are a bunch of CROOKS that attempt to take advantage of folks in our community. read more

On my way to a job interview my Ford Expedition's right side dipped and the car wobbled. I drove it to the right shoulder on 28 and called the shop. The manager sent a tow truck within minutes to pick me up. He offered to drive me to my interview and loaned me his car. That was thoughtful of him. I used to get my car inspected across the street at Firestone, but they stopped doing state inspections a few years ago and referred me across the street to Sugarland Shell. I've been going there for 4 years now, most recently this morning (10/6/16) for my state inspections. I have a 2003 Ford Taurus with 220,000 miles on it, so trust me, I generally expect the inspection to turn up something. And, let's face it, nobody likes to be surprised with car repair costs. My experience with SS has been exemplary. My car did not pass one year, because of a leaky fuel filter, which they fixed very reasonably. Other than that, my car passes, but I do spend a fair amount during the year to keep maintenance up to date. I recommend this station for your inspection needs, and certainly consider them for my more extensive maintenance needs, as I spend about $1200 a year to keep my Taurus on the road. I realize experiences may vary, but car repairs are never inexpensive, and I've found this service center to be fair, responsive and reliable, and recommend you give them a chance for your business. You can always get a second opinion less than a mile away! But, you shouldn't need one, and most people only get the yearly inspection done to their cars! Cars are inherently dangerous, so be thankful inspections are inexpensive and available, and be thankful people like me with 10+ year old cars must have them to keep everyone else safe on our roads! read more
