The good: cute hole in the wall with excellent service. The bad: this is some of the worst Mexican food ever. It is completely bland and flavorless. It's not very hot, which is interesting. Honestly? The powdered mole Costco was selling has more flavor. The HEB jars of mole have more flavor. Also, just because you're putting on a traditionally delicious sauce does not mean you don't season the chicken. Always season the chicken! The beans somehow don't taste like beans? They don't even taste like lard? I'm taking it on faith it's actually beans. I also ordered corn tortillas but they were flour. I just don't know how a dish associated with rich, textured flavors could be so bland. No, I don't have a cold or allergies or anything that would make me insensitive to taste or flavors. You would be better off buying everything at your local supermarket. Canned products have more flavor, or at least salt. I think cafeteria food has more salt. This is...sad. read more

I recently had a training nearby and this place was recommended by others for lunch. By the name, it doesn't sound like a Mexican food restaurant, but it is. It is a little hole in the wall place, but the food was delicious. We went 2 different days. One day I got the super nachos with picadillo, and the next day I got the gorditas. Both meals were delicious. My coworkers got the mole enchiladas, tacos, and I think puffy tacos. All food was gone! Everyone enjoyed their plates thoroughly. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. This will probably be my go to every time I have a training in that vicinity. read more

We have passed this place countless times over the past 15 years going on to Fort Sam and stopped here for the first time this week. This place is a showcase of Vietnam memorabilia from I believe the original owner. It is interesting. The restaurant features Tex-mex food and reminds me of the old San Antonio Tex-mex restaurants that you can't find anymore. The food was reasonably priced and good. It's simple food but good. The way I remembered Tex-mex tasting. They have daily lunch specials and have kids menus as well. Only issue it's on the wrong side of San Antonio for me to be a weekly place to eat, but for those who live or work in the area, this place is a " go to" place. My husband swears this place is good but my first time there was not. Rice was dry and not all the way done. I ordered the chalupa lunch special with no tomatoes. Came out covered in tomatoes. I took off what I could but ended up losing most of the tiny bit of cheese as well. The first chalupa was ok at best. The second was just a nasty soggy mess of beans top and bottom. Ordered the two single beef quesadillas for my daughter $2.99 each. They brought out and charged me for $9 plate. Went to Drop Zone on a Thursday during lunch while attending a training at the Education Service Center for Region 20. We were given ample time for lunch but wanted to go somewhere nearby that would keep us from having to rush back. I ordered the Gordita plate and a colleague of mine got the Texas plate. The chips and salsa were tasty and the service was excellent. The decor in the place is really nice with lots of military memorabilia. I always hesitate to order Gorditas at a new place for fear of them falling short, but my Gordita plate did not disappoint! I got two Gorditas with shredded chicken topped with cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The chicken was full of flavor and the masa of the shell was perfect. It was fluffy and full but also solid enough that it didn't fall apart. The masa had the perfect flavor and balanced out the chicken nicely. The rice and beans that came with the plate were simple and tasty - just how I like it. My colleague said her enchiladas and carne guisada were flavorful and she would order again. We don't come to the service center often, but I will be sure to remember the Drop Zone when we do! The prices were reasonable, the staff was friendly, and the food was delicious! We stopped by for lunch after running some errands on post. It is a sit yourself kind of place. Around lunch there were a good bit of people inside. It has a tiny parking lot. The food overall for myself and wife with 20% tip was less than 20 bucks. I got a sweet tea and their pork chop special. The pork chops came with beans and rice with tortillas and two nice sized pork chops. The service was pretty fast being only seeing one cashier and one server. This is my favorite go to place when I'm at Fort Sam Houston. The food is very good, homestyle cooking. The owners are very patriotic and love the army and other military services. I work right on base and the options on base are limited. I decided to meet my husband at the Drop Zone for lunch today and we had a great time. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was great. I ordered their lunch special which was pork chops and the serving was so generous I did not finish my meal. My husband ordered their huevos rancheros and it was also a generous helping of eggs, hand cut potatoes and refried beans. With tip, 2 cups of coffee, and the 2 meals I spent $23.
