6 year update I originally wrote this review after D's Air & Heating came out to troubleshoot our Pioneer mini-split system. At the time, I was very pleased with the service and specifically praised Darryl and his team for being prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. Unfortunately, six years later, my experience with the system has been very different. We invested approximately $16,000 in a three-unit Pioneer mini-split system for our home. The first two years were good, but after that the system began losing refrigerant. We have continued to experience problems, and now, after having the coils professionally cleaned, the system is not operating and is displaying an E1 error code. I am disappointed because this was a significant investment, and I expected a reliable system for many years. At this point, I am having another HVAC company independently diagnose the system to determine the actual cause of the problem, including whether there is a refrigerant leak and what is causing the E1 error. I wanted to update my original review because my initial experience was positive, but six years of ownership has given me a much different perspective on the long-term reliability of the installation and system. I believe potential customers deserve to hear both sides of my experience: the service was good when I originally posted this review, but unfortunately, the long-term performance of the system has been disappointing. read more

I found Darryl on Yelp after 1 of our wall-in air conditioners was crackling and not producing cool air. After sending out a quote message, he was the only one in the area that serviced wall-in air conditioners. Him and 2 guys showed up and did a great job with cleaning up all 3 of our air conditioners at a reasonable price, I highly recommend these guys, and the only thing I'd change is their response time and them arriving on time. The A\C always goes out on the hottest of days! We called Darryl and he fit us in on his way home at the end of a busy day. He assessed the situation quickly and accurately realizing that our problem was actually in the thermostat rather than in the AC unit. We had replaced batteries ourself twice thinking that was the issue, but screen kept glitching in and out. Thought maybe something in the AC unit was tripping and cutting power to thermostat. But with a few easy wire tests D showed us that the thermostat was getting power from the unit. Once we agreed on a replacement, Darryl was no more than 20 minutes to replace. His charge was very reasonable and we even paid him a little extra because other places were going to charge us an emergency fee if they would come out that evening. Here is the timeline of events: June 26: Basement flooded due to storm. Once the water receded, my furnace/blower was making a rattling noise. Contacted D, made an appointment for July 1. July 1: D arrived and replaced the blower motor for $370. Good deal, I thought. July 3: I noticed D had not put the air filter back in the unit. No big deal, I put it in myself - and the unit started rattling again, just like after the flood. Took the filter out, the rattling stopped. Put the filter back in, rattling returned. I texted D to get his opinion - he recommended "a thinner filter." This is already a 1-inch filter, the thinnest they carry at hardware stores. I bought several different styles of filters, all of them caused the unit to rattle. July 6: I had another HVAC service tech come, who noticed that the replacement motor was not OEM. He replaced D's motor with an OEM motor, and the rattling stopped, even with a filter in place. July 14: I texted D asking for a refund. He asked why I didn't call him back. We of course had exchanged texts about the filter issue, but "thinner filter" was his only option. I again asked for refund, but was told that D had to "honor the warranty for the part replacement," whatever that means. So, I'm $370 poorer and have a non-OEM motor sitting in my basement. I've been using Darryl for the past few years and I just wanna say thank you for all the excellent work that you've been done. Couple years back there was a significant break down in my AC unit and I've been searching for vendors who can fix the units but had no luck. I've used four seasons, northtown, and many others - except for recommending changing to a new unit which will cost me $10k+ (it's a combo unit and there's limited people in Chicago have knowledge about how to fix it), no one could actually fix the problem until I found D. Really? 5 stars? I had an air conditioning problem I needed fixed ASAP and called 10 places to see who could come out the quickest and was so relieved to find out D could come and sounded confident he could do the simple fix that same evening. 5:00 rolls around, no call, no message. I had to call and text him multiple times to ask if he was coming. When he finally responded he said he got hungry so he wasn't coming until 8. Ok, 8 will work.... 8:00 rolls around, still no response and now he's not picking up. Nightmarish experience with this company for us. Called them to figure out why 2 of the heaters in different bedrooms weren't working properly. Talked to Daryl who gave an ETA and was about an hour late. Came into the house and didn't have those disposable shoe covers that most professional contractors usually bring. He proceeded to the bedrooms and 'bled' the small radiator units. After that remedy didn't work, he went to the basement to check out the boiler. He started to tinker with the wiring and that's what opened up a whole can of worms. He left thinking the problem was solved. Unfortunately, he screwed the boiler and it stopped working. We had no hot water for heat or for our taps. I immediately called Daryl back and explained what happened. He said he'd be over first thing in the morning to attend to it. He also had said he was so busy I'd have to help him out by picking up a part from one of his wholesale places in the suburbs in order to expedite things. I picked up the part and came back home and again he was over an hour late. This is not even the worst part. The part he ordered was the wrong size and wasn't even necessary given the problem! Again that evening, he started tinkering with the wiring. At one point, he asked me for the instructions manual to the system. I found that and gave it to him but unfortunately that didn't work as well. After spending a couple hours on it, he said he'd have to come back Monday to continue the work (and we'd have no heat all weekend). At this point, I realized he was in over his head and I needed to call a real professional to fix this mess. Thank God for the folks at Service Express who came in and first shook their heads at why on earth someone would tinker with the wiring when it wasn't even necessary but then proceeded to methodically correct the mess. I've never had such an experience with a tradesman who failed to admit of this wrongdoing and that he was not familiar and capable of handling our boiler problem and then proceeded botch things up to the point where our family of 4 suffered as a consequence. The only reason I didn't take legal action against this company was that I just didn't want to incur more losses in time and money and increased stress! read more

I used their yelp deal which made the experience even better I mentioned needing some work done on HVAC with thoughts of replacing the system. He provided me a very reasonable quote. So we're having trouble getting heat and a/c to our second floor, greeeaaat. One company comes out (though on the phone they pre-determined they can't help us), says we can't help you. I'm so surprised. After poking around online, trying to figure what the problem is, someone suggests I find someone with a duct camera. A lot harder than you might imagine. I called up D's and he said he had a long one, so I invited him over. Turns out his camera couldn't make some of our duct turns but he finds the ducts are ridiculously filthy, maybe there's a blockage from the filth, let's clean. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, this house flipper we bought from is, well, I have nothing kind to say. Daryl and his son spent 2 hours cleaning the ducts out, reset all the registers the way he felt they should be for optimal airflow, pointed out a bunch of other things and said he hoped the cleaning helps out situation, please let him know. Well, it has. It's not a fridge upstairs in this cold weather anymore. While it's not ideal up there, Daryl's work made a difference. Super nice guys too. I will call him again I'm sure. read more

My tenant had complaint of furnace that was blowing cold air and short cycling. D's agreed to come in the evening which I appreciate since it accommodates mine and my tenants schedule. Most places have limited hours or charge extra to come later. They came and found the furnace was dirty, cleaned it and I have no complaints from the tenant now a week later. I found their prices to be reasonable and lower than a couple other places, though the reason I went with them was definity because of availability and prompt response rather than price. I think I should add another 5 stars to this business and to Darryl. Our situation was that we really needed a new steam boiler + water heater (old one was installed in the 70s by Sears). We 'shopped' around getting quotes here and there from various HVAC companies. One day we call Darryl to give us a quote and he gave us a very competitive price and my family ultimately decided that he was the better option. In terms of the job and service, Darryl did an excellent job and it was fairly quick for a 2-man job! Darryl is very dedicated to his work, proof of this occurred on one day where he worked from morning till 11 PM at night! Hi, I normally don't post reviews but I needed to in this case especially recommending small business owners who provide good reliable service. I contacted D's Friday after another company couldn't get in to clean our dryer vents at our condo until 5 Days later. Darryl said he could do it on Sunday after I explained that our tenant was pregnant and was going to be induced on Tuesday and the last thing we wanted was for them to be disturbed by a service call first few days of being a new Mom. He called and said he was running a bit tardy, but made there at 10:15am and began cleaning out the vents of the dryer. Unfortunately he discovered that the installers most likely didn't clean the vents properly before installation the previous year as the coil was so clogged that water accumulated in the coil not allowing the dryer to heat properly. If that wasn't enough I didn't realize my wife had contacted him after I informed her of the service call for our condo to have him stop by our home to do our dryer as well. Again, this was Sunday. Cleaned our vents and dryer and informed us how dirty it really was as he was covered in dust and gunk. Highly recommended us servicing it once a year at least instead of (never in 3 Years) being a risk of fire. Again all on a Sunday and was kind enough not to charge a premium rate for the weekend. Bonus points as he was good with our curious three old son. Only reason it's not five stars is that we need to see the difference after cleaning. There is something magical about a small family operation that does what they're supposed to do, when and how they're supposed to do it, with a friendly smile, followup care, and without up-selling.
