When I'm looking for shoes, someone always tells me to try DSW. I've never, ever, in my whole life, found shoes that I liked in DSW. EVER. All of the people who tell me to go there clearly don't know me. I always feel like the shoes are either last season or the discontinued colors/styles. I also never find a shoe that "speaks to me" and that's important when shoe shopping. I guess DSW just isn't for me. :( read more

I'm a fan of any place that specializes in shoes. They do have really great deals at DSW and you may even walk away with a great pair of shoes for half the "normal" price. BUT you will probably just browse the awesome selection, try on a couple pairs, imagine how good they would look with your new jeans, hold on to a few "maybes" and then leave empty handed because you really don't need shoes and you're trying to be good. DSW... why MUST you make me feel like a freak of nature for wearing a size 9.5? I have RARELY found a 9.5 or 10 there. It should be said tho that most shoe stores don't carry sizes above 8 a lot. I really do have a passion for shoes... its a shame I was born with mutant feet. ***UPDATE*** I found a few pairs of sassy feet treats for cheap cheap! Two stars for the shoes. Four stars for everything else. Due to my size 4ish foot, I am jaded when it comes to shoes. Nice, adult shoes normally start at a 6. Unless it's a boot that I can stuff with socks, I can't buy a 6. Sometimes DSW will have 5.5 or a 5. These work sometimes, but if you have feet like me, you won't have much luck here. I have convinced myself in to buying too-big-shoes way too many times and regretted it later. The clearance section looks like a fantasy for anyone who wears a 7. Check out the size 5 section. it's probably got rubber slippers, some pink skechers, and, like, white fuzzy boots. However, their tights, wallets and purses are awesome, and priced really well. You can find a lot of xmas gifts here for your mom or sister. Also, this DSW is underground and sometimes smells like sewer. DSW's in the suburbs are wayyyy nicer. read more

As you descend on the escalator, it is like you are entering a pit filled with hundreds of people all writhing in a shoe orgy. On the weekends it is crazy busy, and at first I was really disappointed because I would find a cute shoe, then try and look for my size only to see that they had only 5s or 10s. However all was not lost and I ended up finding the most perfect work shoes at a good price and I love wearing them everyday! This location isn't really convenient to me so I don't know if I'll really be back unless I'm desperate. read more

I am moved to write a review because today I experienced excellent customer service at this DSW. I bought a pair of Ugg boots here 6 months ago. About 2 months ago, the zipper on one boot broke. I was very upset because: 1) you need functioning winter boots in Chicago until like May, and 2) they were pretty expensive. I had talked to the manager on the phone and he was really nice, so I brought the boot in. "Do you have the receipt?" The question I had been hoping to avoid. Crap. No. I did not have the receipt. No problem! They were able to look my receipt up (give them your email so they have you in the system), and after a phone call with the receipt keepers (I assume), my receipt was sent over and printed up. The manager gave me a copy, as well as his number and the business card of a nearby cobbler. He assured me that DSW will reimburse me for the amount I pay the cobbler. So that's my story. My faith in customer service is restored. At least until I have to call Comcast again ;) read more

Ugh. I'm starting to get REAL annoyed with this place. Maybe it's because the number of styles they display (47,000...approximately) is directly inversely related to the number of 8.5s of any of them (1...that I have to fight over with the person who has been hovering DIRECTLY behind me for roughly 10 minutes). Maybe it's because their shoe selections are becoming increasingly U.G.L.Y (they ain't got no alibi...). Maybe it's because the stores seems to be increasingly dirty with every trip in there (I'm talking junk on the floor, Starbucks cups abandoned in the aisles, etc). Don't even get me started on their clearance section. Teeny and completely run amok. If the clearance section were a person it would be a disheveled, slovenly "husky" guy with a 5 o'clock shadow and a pea-soup stain on his shirt. I used to love this place but things have gone seriously downhill this year. With online sites like Zappos and Shoes.com that have really upped customer service initiatives, this DSW better beware. I've consistently taken my business elsewhere...and I'm not feeling bad about it. read more

I LOVE this particular DSW location! I often call up beforehand to check whether or not they have the shoes I'm interested in purchasing, and the staff is always so kind and patient. They have a new feature on their site where you can actually search shoes by location, which is really great. (Doesn't hurt to double check by phone though!) In-store, someone is always coming around to check on you, or giving you those cute little mesh bags to carry your selections in, or just kind of being friendly which is always appreciated. Besides the great shoes, I think the amazinggggg customer service is really what keeps me coming back. It's really rare to step into a store where every single employee is happy, helpful, and knowledgable about products. Love it. read more

I just want to compliment this DSW on their customer service. I bought a pair of Natha Studio leather dress shoes (don't make that mistake) and they fell apart in less than three months - the soles just totally wore away! The manager at DSW was really friendly about it all and gave me a full refund which I used to get a different pair of shoes. I am giving them five stars because of the customer service provided by Cara and Louis. I purchased a pair of Ben Shermans here and really really liked the shoes. Unfortunately, a short time later the soles began to come off. Even though I couldn't locate my receipt, Cara worked with me and helped me replace them. They didn't have the same shoes in stock, but she offered to order them online or get them from another store. Unfortunately, I needed them the next day, but I was able to find a different pair of shoes that I like and are really comfortable. I love this DSW location. I had never been to DSW before but my mother sent me a giftcard in the mail and of course I had to go spend it. I love the clearance section with all the different colors and equivalent discounts. Turns out, the rest of the merchandise is also cheap. Who would've guessed? haha. Eventually i ended up buying my three different pairs of shoes, which was perfect. Special thanks to the girl Samantha who helped me out. Experience has taught me that paying twice as much for a shoe that pretty much looks the same on the outside really is NOT worth it since the shoes last about as long before they feel flat and fall apart. I ordered a beautiful pair of Sam Edelman ankle-strap pumps in fuschia from DSW (Designer Shoes Warehouse). Despite the fact they arrived in a plain brown shoe box marked size 8 (I ordered sized 7), I found a size seven shoe inside. It had a white chalky power on it but I brushed it off pretty well and tried it on. For a brief moment in time I became Cinderella - the shoe was elegant and it fit like a dream. I decided to try on the other shoe. It seemed a little big - as if Cinderella's cruel stepsister's bulbous foot had stretched it out. I slipped off the too-big shoe and looked at its underside - marked size 8. Sigh . . . I immediately called DSW customer service and spoke with Nina W. Nina was wonderful: kind, apologetic, and resourceful. In five minutes Nina had emailed me a return to sender label and gave me a discount on the next pair of DSW shoes I order online. The sales shoes are great but the non-sale shoes are just as good. Summer offer great flip flops and fall offers great boots. The salespeople are alway always helpful. My roommate somehow scored a $10 pair of similar nature a couple of months ago (marked down from like $90), but I think that was a fluke. I used to shop at DSW in Marina del Rey, Ca when I lived there, so had no hesitation about shopping this one when I moved to Chicago. I don't buy a lot of shoes, given that I wear a sz. 11. The days of trying to impress anyone with shoes are over for me. I wear what is comfortable and suits the occasion I'm wearing it for. What a relief! Wish I'd adopted this attitude a long time ago. My feet would have thanked me for it and I could have saved a lot of money. DSW rarely disappoints when I need a shoe. There are plenty of suitable styles to choose from. I often buy men's shoes for comfort and trying them on isn't an issue in this store. The return policy is so liberal that I always buy with confidence. The other day I had to return a shoe that I truly thought would be fine. It was a Skecher's walk and tone leather number that was jamming my big toe. Months later, I returned them with receipt in hand (I even had the same box) -- and was able to get a pair of black boots that I really needed, given that my size had changed and I had to get rid of a beloved pair. The staff is always friendly -- and the prices are affordable. The shoes they have marked down even more are even more of a reason for me to shop there. I am always surprised at the number of women's size 11s available, as well. read more

This is shoe heaven to me! I love coming down the escalator and seeing ALL of those rows of shoes. I get a literal rush through my veins. I have never found shopping here to be an unpleasant experience. The workers are nice enough, the place is clean, and I get damn good deals. I scavenge through the clearance racks with a proud smile on my face. Join their "club" for lots of extra deals and bonus gift certificates. Now, this is no Nordstrom Shoe Dept, but it'll do. I get most of my shoes here. They always get me lots of compliments. I cursed my best friend when she moved only 1/2 block from this location. I also like that Linens N Things and Marshall's are all right there. And they offer FREE PARKING!! Gotta love that in Chicago. read more

DSW.. what can I say, a mecca for the discerning shoe shopper. They have a great selection of shoes at this location and I always walk out with at least 2 pairs. They have everything from the basic to the moderate to the more upscale labels at fair prices. I also like the Canal Street location, but I always find stuff I like right in the heart of Boystown. The first time I came in here, i found the most amazing Sam Edelman brown snakeskin pumps...on sale, for less than 20 dollars. There was a girl who was training as a sales associate and she was extremely helpful. I was also in this past weekend looking for sandals. I had a very specific design of a shoe that I wanted. I'd checked some other stores, and just hoped that DSW would have it. They literally had the exact shoe I was hoping for. And for the right price too. This store is amazing. As an avid DSW shopper and at locations around the country, literally, this isn't the best one. I used to live right near this DSW so I shopped there all the time, but you really need to dig to find a great pair of shoes. The staff is pretty good and always available. I was disappointed because as a DSW club member, I had a coupon. I forgot my coupon. I came back later that day, with shoes & receipt to apply the coupon. They wouldn't adjust the price, but did allow me to return the shoes, then re-purchase with the coupon. BUT they said if I had waited until the next day, they wouldn't have honored the coupon... WTF DSW? That's really rude to do to your frequent buyers. I forgot my coupon... why does it matter when it's applied? Not sure if this is just at this store or all of them, but that is a highly disappointed factor. read more

I see that in this hard economic times many designer brands that aren't selling at big stores like neimun marcus look toward DSW to sell their stuff to cut losses so these kind of stores are great in tough times and are somewhat recession proof. You know you have a DSW problem once you reach 'Premier Rewards Member' status. There aren't many places I'll shoe shop, and I always start here. I usually always find something here. I tend to have the best luck at the Oakbrook DSW, but this one isn't bad with the free parking across the street, convenience of Linens 'n' Things and Marshalls in the same building, and rows and rows of shoes :) I happened to buy a pair off the clearance rack a couple of months ago without a box and the manager was SO concerned and went on a search for a box for me. DSW finally ended my search for black dress boots with wide calves. Their boot selection is excellent with more than three rows of nothing but boots in all price ranges. I came in a little self-conscious about my big calves after my awful experience in Aldo (see my review). However, when I was greeted by the sales person, she didn't have any specific shoe to recommend but did provide me some suggestions as to what type of shoe to look for that will meet my needs. Then, she just left me to try on stuff which I appreciated! I ended up finding a pair of Mootsies Tootsies boots for only 40 bucks the fit perfectly! The store does have the warehouse feel to it but it's really well-organized and easy to maneuver through. Be prepared to take your time to navigate through their huge selection. As some other people have said, if you go into DSW looking for something specific, you'll probably end up disappointed. However, the salespeople at this location are always willing to help and offer suggestions/alternatives. VERY friendly and very good at tipping the scale if you're undecided about a potential purchase :) I like to think of it as, "I was probably going to buy these anyway, so I'm glad that I've received a compliment on them before leaving the store." They're not pushy, it's more of a "gentle nudge!" Example: brown suede Steve Madden Luxe t-strap stilettos with moccasin-style fringe. Not exactly "necessities" but adorable nonetheless. $100 retail value --- $70 DSW price + 40% off + $20 in Rewards Club gift certificates + 2 compliments while trying them on = sold! I enjoy hitting up DSWs for good deal on foot ware and this one always seems to have the best selection of wide widths available. An important consideration when it comes to wide hooves. I usually head straight to the back to scope out the clearance racks first for the truly outstanding deals. Then work the regular selections for what I need. I have found everything from winter boots to dress shoes to casual boats shoes to athletic trainers here. Bonus, there is a Marshall's in the same building, so you can double up on your discount shopping. Plus free parking! read more

One thing that hasn't changed at this location is the quality in staff. Everyone is helpful & seems to care. They have a Parking LOT that is free. Still on the search for that damn pair of Mary Janes, I thought I'd try good ol' DSW. I've had lots of luck in the past here and while I didn't find the Mary Janes of my dreams on my most recent trip, I did walk out with two pair of super cute shoes. I like DSW's generous return policy, I like the vast selection and I like the giant bags they have in the store so you can haul multiple boxes of shoes through the aisles with you. I also like laughing at some of the more ridiculous shoes in the sales section or at the patrons balancing 4 boxes of shoes while yapping away on their cell phones. I've been to many DSW stores and this is my favorite. It's not so large that it's overwhelming, it's well organized and not over crowded with shoppers. It's in the basement level so it has lower ceilings which makes it seem more comfy. Like a warm shoe box. I don't know, maybe not. Maybe more like a smaller DSW. read more

Ok, I'm not the normal shoe buyer since I have wide, flat, impossible feet. I did find a really great pair of flats here a couple of weeks ago that don't make me want to hack my feet off after two seconds, so DSW scored some stars there! The selection is really great, just not if you have weird feet. The store itself is nice and orderly, even when it's busy. I stop by all the time, just to look. I am from Minnesota, and the extent of my DSW experience there was at the Mall of America - where no one asks if you need help or even seems available to answer questions if you need it. At this location, however, I have experienced the polar opposite. I am a person who doesn't really enjoy shopping all that much, but when I do I generally know what I want and if I don't find it, I leave. Having someone ask if I need help several times can be annoying, like it can sometimes be here, but it does come in handy when you DO need it. For the most part, the staff here is very helpful and accommodating. If you are a rewards member (which you should be!) you really get some great benefits. Not only do you get coupons sent to you, but you can also look up receipts and other purchase history using your member number. They are usually pretty friendly and don't seem bothered to do this for you, either. I find that whether it be shoes, a bag or other accessory, I find something I like every time. Yes, some of the brands will be more expensive, because they are HIGHER QUALITY brands. You aren't likely to find a genuine pair of Michael Kors heels for under a hundred bucks (unless you are lucky to find the one or two sizes that go on clearance). However, most of their items are very reasonable for what they are. The shoes that cost 20 bucks are probably going to fall apart relatively quickly, so spending a little more is worth it!
