Met someone here for a drink. Great location right near the train station, very relaxed atmosphere and definitely a chill place to go after the workday has ended. Service was decent and it managed to be free from pretension without being completely nasty or gross or seedy. I had a seltzer and nobody hassled me so I was a happy camper. read more

I spent quite a week here one morning. It's a nice Irish bar that isn't wide, but goes back pretty deep. The bar is on one side with booths on the other and a private area in the back. I went very early with some coworkers. We work midnights and they opened early so, lucky us! There isn't any food, but they didn't have a problem with us bringing some in. The beers were good, the shots were gooder (yeah that was on purpose). We all had a really good time, drank a bit too much, but didn't get rowdy. NYC creates a warped impression about what a pub is. Just b/c you rent a space, name it St. Something/Blarney Stone/O'Something/McSomething/etc., you serve Guinness and Harp on tap, and you build a bar with brass railings, it doesn't make it a pub. A pub needs a heart. I can't define it but you can tell a pub has a heart when it's got old geezers and dogs in it. Dublin House has a heart. Unfortunately for my Dublin House patronage, I don't use this organ when selecting bars. I use my eyes (I like eye candy), my tongue (I like microbrews, nice wine), my ears (I like music), my stomach (I like food), and another organ (see 'my eyes' parenthetical). But if I ever get around to following my heart, I'll find my way back to the Dublin House more. This will probably have to wait, though, until my other organs aren't functioning quite as well as they do today... read more

You will never get lost on your way to the Dublin House, simply follow the bright neon harp blinking invitingly from afar. This extremely old pub is located just steps from nearby Museum of Natural History and Central Park. The original wood veneer detail is a nice touch and adds to the pub's allure. The Guinness is cheap and always poured to perfection by the old Irish bar tenders. This is a good start off bar for a night of drinking. Have a few here and then move on. Stay away from this place on St. Patrick's Day...it is an overcrowded mess of amateurs. read more

1921. A speakeasy of days gone by. Red leatherette booths. Brass art deco decor and a phone booth with a PHONE in it (albeit push button). A proper Guinness pint and a 40 foot mahogany bar. Neon sign buzzs in a comforting way, as if it will never go dark. A sad crowd one might say; men hunched over, periodically glancing at the five widescreen tvs. Don't skip Dublin House. I agree with the other reviewers, this is a nice beacon of rest in an area that is not particularly known for its old school bars. This place is a throwback, and has a lot of charm, with it's old and original wooden bar, that seems to be buffed smooth from use. Quaint small booths let you relax if you need a little private time. The authentic Irish bartender joked that he was almost as old as the bar. Nice guy. Overall a very good spot to stop. read more

As Irish pubs go, this is the real deal. I went in at 6PM on a quiet Tuesday night and there were about ten people at the bar. Every person had either a Guinness, a whiskey or a martini. Classic old New York ambiance with an attentive, knowledgeable bar tender. The old school booths for two in the front are perfect for getting your "glow" on with a lady friend or settling a dispute with an old friend. This is my kind of place! P.S. This one really benefited from the smoking ban. It used to be uninhabitable at times with cigarette smoke back in the day. read more

Good prices for the strength of the drink, great atmosphere, very interesting history (it used to be an orphanage). My friend and I stopped in for a drink on our last night in NYC. The Irish lady behind the bar was friendly, although she kept trying to sell us on taking one of the bus tours, which I thought was odd. After serving us, she pretty much abandoned us for the four guys (the only other people there) at the other end of the bar. We sat with empty drink glasses for a good fifteen minutes, and finally decided to leave instead of waiting forever for her to serve more. Even then, I had to get up and walk down to get her attention to pay. She was apologetic, but really? A grand total of six people at the bar, and she couldn't at least visually check on us? That was disappointing, since we both would have stayed for another drink if it hadn't taken forever. This is a tiny little bar that my coworkers frequent when we are in town. I've only been once, but I came very late in the evening and was served by a kind older gentleman. We ordered pizza in from a local pizza shop (we were drunk and hungry) and he didn't mind at all. Apparently my coworkers do this often and I'm sure the owner gets a kick out of them. He knew all of their drinks and poured them as soon as we walked in. He also made sure to keep our drinks full. I was walking by on Sunday eve about 9pm. Needed a place to have 40th birthday drinks for my friend later that week. I go in, was an older bartender (maybe 60yo). Doesn't seem very friendly. I ask if they have happy hour on weekdays. "4-7pm" he says. "What is the happy hour special? (two-for-one, discount, etc..) "We're all happy here." "Haha, yes, but what is the happy hour?" Good little neighborhood bar full of locals. The Irish guy behind the bar has been there forever and does a fantastic job of serving everyone quickly. We sat at one of the little tables across from the bar waiting for service, but then realized the bartender was the only person pouring and serving. A quick trip up to the counter resulted in some perfectly poured Guinness, so all was good. What I really like about this place is how unassuming it is. It's just a neighborhood spot filled with neighborly people stopping in for a drink, some chatter, or to maybe watch a ballgame. Open until 4am, this little dive bar is the perfect tap room including darts in the back and a funky smell upon arrival due to the historic nature of the bar (i.e. decades of fun). Ok this place would have had 5 stars but since I have been back three times since moving away from NYC it has blown man chunks. Background: I used to frequent this place at least ONCE per week for a good 10 years and scared to think how many drinks I've had there. It was great, not pretentious at all, no man hating NY women ticked off and in a huff cause they are in their 30s and single, no $8 bucks for a beer ($4.50) and a decent juke box. Basically, it was a place me and my boys wanted to go and just drink, shoot the shit and be left alone. Now? They cleaned it up and the character seems to have disappeared with the dirt and grime. Too clean, they have flat screens and the atmosphere is lame. I have no reason to ever go back here again, the real Dublin House left a couple of years ago. Adios. read more

Love this anachronistic bar. Except for the ubiquitous large screen TVs, you'd think you stepped onto the set of an old black white TV show that had a scene in a bar (like the Twilight Zone). Was served a well-made Jameson's Whiskey Sour by a sweet bonnie lass. Since it was too early for the kitchen to open, she recommended Coppola's across the street and even gave us a 15% off coupon she had. The late lunch at Coppola's was great and the 15% off just about paid for the drinks we had at the Dublin! If you've admired the sign outside, it is the perfect harbinger of what awaits you on the inside... P.S. We literally stumbled into this bar drunk from out night's partying. There wasn't a soul in the house except for myself and three other friends. We ordered 3 beers to round the night off. The bartender was busy putting up stools and cleaning up but he served us nonetheless. Much to my drunken surprise, there was a jukebox right behind us. So I quickly inserted a dollar to make the country crap that was blaring from it stop, and I played some Lady Gaga and The Divinyls. Needless to say we sang till they turned off the lights. The beer was delish and the place has a typical dive bar atmosphere. It was fun, but stay away from the bathrooms. I don't think it's been cleaned since 1982. read more

The bar itself was nice but the bartender (middle-aged Irish guy) was a real asshole. When my husband was served a beer, there was too much head so the beer wasn't filled to the top. When he asked the bartender if it was possible to fill it a little more, he said, "are you kidding me?!" The bartender was willing to make a scene in front of the whole bar just because someone asked about filling the beer to the top when the head subsided. Needless to say, we didn't leave a tip. Even if the request was unreasonable, the bartender shouldn't make his customers feel foolish but should make them feel comfortable and happy to be there--his demeanor and actions show him to be a far-cry away from satisfying those criteria. Being there is a $25 credit card minimum there, we paid for our drinks in cash and he gave the change almost knowing he wasn't getting a tip. read more

I found this place in the great book, Best Bars of New York, by Jef Klein and Cary Hazlegrove. It's an unobtrusive spot that almost resents your knowing about it. The food system is one of the weirdest I've seen. On each table is a bar menu with standard appetizers: Potato Skins, calamari, chicken fingers and a few burgers. Under the menu is a phone number. Once you decide on your order, you call the number and a quarter of an hour later, the food arrives. A lot of bars have a book of near-by deliver menus, but this bar has the system build in! Ah well, it works. Mike, the bar-tender has a wry sense of humor and the customers... wow! They make the place. We were there during some complete stranger's birthday party. Suddenly, we were IN the party. No tourists here. Just a wild collection of local characters: barstool philosophers, alkies, neighborhood locals, young partiers.
