Ordered online and when I went to pick up my order it was $16 more than my confirmed price. I was told it was because I put a note for pork fried rice instead of white rice on both entrees. There was no option for this when placing my order, but typically, that would be a $1-$3 up charge. Instead, they added a large order of pork fried rice to my order without telling me. $16 extra for them tonight, but we will never eat there again. Avoid this bait and switch restaurant. read more

Ohh what can I say. This place was my go to for Chinese, even to the point that I would purposely plan a route in order to pick up their Gen Tso chicken dish. Alas, tis no more the fact. Apparently, ownership changed a year or two ago and with them the secret sauce disappeared. I had lunch today and ordered my goto GenTso dish and I might as well have ordered chicken wings from Lee's Hoagies as they tasted like that through en through. Got takeout tonight for the last time. To start, our order (along with 4 other people waiting) was 30 minutes later than the estimated pickup time. Ordered steamed pork dumplings, which were good until some piece of bone or tendon from the meat nearly cracked my molar. Also ordered 2 spicy raw rolls- neither of which were spicy. So disappointing. Then we ordered 2 entrees which supposedly were to come with fried rice- you guessed it- both were MIA. Not to mention the pad thai was NOT pad thai... I actually have no idea what they thought that dish was but just save yourself and go to Oishi where they actually know what they're doing and do it efficiently. Walk into this place and you'll find a dark desolate land, which resembles my overall experience. Food 2/5 Complete disappointment. I had high hopes because I've heard good things all around so I figured I couldn't go wrong with Duck Sauce. My mistake. We ordered two "Dan Dan Noodles" and a General Tso chicken, thinking maybe they have a better technique than your average take out place. My mistake again. The GT Chicken was dry and chewy, it almost felt like I was eating old chicken or something. But what really sucked was the Dan Dan noodle, I expected a profound sauce with chewy delicious noodle. It looked like noodles with mystery sauce, almost like a questionable meal in a Chinese highschool's cafeteria. Service 2/5 The only thing dryer than my General Tso Chicken was my server's personality. That's about all I can say on the matter. Ambience 3/5 It's dark and gloomy. It's not over the top or exceptional nor is it dirty. Maybe I'm biased because the food portion of this review is creeping in. But it scores average for me. Over all, disappointed in my experience. The food is top shelf. Was recently there with friends, and the experience was unforgettable. The appetizers and entrees were delicious. The side items were worth every penny. The portions are very generous, and the price is very reasonable. Personally, I have eaten Sesame Chicken at many Chinese Restaurants, and I must say this is some of the best. And do not forget to order the lettuce wraps to get you started, which arguably is one of the coolest and best appetizers of any restaurant in Newtown. I have to update my review after continuing to get food from Duck sauce. Their general tsos is the best I've had. They must have started using all white meat chicken bc every time I order general tsos it's all white meat and cooked to perfection. I haven't dined in here since the pandemic but have been ordering out from them. They are always very friendly on the phone and food is usually ready with in 15/20 mins. Quick and fairly priced. The very pleasant person on the phone assured me this was no problem and that it was actually how my order was regularly served. Wrong! Got back to the house to find it all wrapped in seaweed. There went my dinner. Veggie spring rolls were good. The kids had sweet and sour chicken-typical of most other Asian spots. White rice included. They included two fortune cookies for a large order of sweet and sour chicken, two appetizers and a sushi order. I couldn't care less, but three kids had to split two fortune cookies? Good times. Torn. In the area, this place appears to be one of the better places. On the other hand, it isn't very authentic - very american-ized. Heavy sauces and saltiness permeated every dish. I see potential in their menu and was actually fairly optimistic, but things seem to just fall short. Oh, and our waiter wreaking of smoking didn't exactly help. Well it's been awhile but my wife and I returned with are 2yr old and yes we instantly knew there was a change in the atmosphere right. Bit odd to see the hiring sign as its always been a family place with the same faces. All of this my wife pointed out right away. However food was fast and good and there was no change to the wonton which is what got me hooked in the first place. One issue I had in the past that sauce meals were too thick in since dishes like syrup, our garlic chicken was the same taste, but thinner which was perfect. Beforehand I wouldn't dare order it again. Having no ribs was disappointing and wok sear beef is normally my fav. Which I hope is still good, but I think everyone bit more upset about the change in owners (which they should have been open about and maybe posts sign) but the food didn't seem odd to me. Worst dining experience I have had in years. Only received 1 glass of water for the 1 hour and 25 minutes we were there. We were given dry huge chunks of chicken with no knife to cut it with. When we asked for a knife, our request was never filled. Couldn't even get the waitress' attention to ask for a box, which probably was better for us in the long run. $14 for 8 pieces of chicken and 3 pieces of broccoli. It pains me to write this review. We loved Duck Sauce for the longest time, however the past two times we've gotten take-out, it just hasn't been the same. The flavors in the Hunan 8 Treasures changed (for the worse) and the Wok Seared Beef is now inedibly sweet. I'm only giving it 2 stars because the wonton soup is still good. Did not even get a chance to eat tonight. walked in about 6:50 on a Wednesday night. At least 7 tables were dirty with remnants of previous diners. After a few minutes we were offered the only available clean table - the one next to the bathroom. I stated we would wait for a table to be cleaned. Who knew that was a monumental task. Got seated at 7:05 with water and a pot of tea, but NO teacups. A full 10 more minutes passed and not one person acknowledged our existence. We got up and on the way out, one of the "hostesses" looked up in wonder. I said - 10 minutes to clean a table, 10 more minutes and more nothing - her answer - "we're very short handed tonight", as she was merely standing there doing nothing. I have no reason to come back. What happened!?! Apparently my favorite Asian fusion restaurant changed ownership recently. Over the past 10 years this was our "goto takeout place". Enjoyed mostly everything on the menu and now unfortunately the new owner changed recipes and is using below average ingredients. Our takeout last night included our usual chicken lettuce wraps. This was my first time here and we will be back! It was lunch time on a Tuesday so there was only 4 other tables of guests, our waitress Angel was very sweet and polite. I ate the seitan lettuce wraps, my fiancé had the pine nut tofu and both were great! Very light and full of flavor. It's great to have such delicious local vegan options read more

I really wanted to like this place. And initially I did. But it seems there's been some unfortunate changes. The portions have shrunk. And I don't mind paying extra for quality food but the quality is missing here. Now it's just overpriced Mall quality Chinese. It's a shame something as simple as an Egg Rolls could be botched. The Egg Rolls are 99% shredded cabbage. The wontons in the Wonton Soup are thick and doughy. I was not a fan of the texture of the meat filling either. Rubbery pork. I did however like the General Tso's Chicken. The chicken itself was cut into big chunks. Not over cooked. The Orange Beef and the Wok-Sear Beef were good options as well. The beef was tender. The shoestring potatoes that accompany the beef dishes are interesting. They should be crispy or so you'd think. Instead they are saturated in oil resulting in chewy strings. The ones that come in a can taste better. The Vegetable Lo Mein was bland. Which was disappointing since it was filled with several fresh vegetables. The Spicy Pineapple Fried Rice on the other hand was lacking freshness. I'll continue my search for other Chinese take out options. read more

I like this place! First walk in it looks like an upscale Asian restaurant, til you look at the menu and prices. Looks a bit like any other Chinese restaurant, complete with good prices. But WOW when the food shows up at the table, the presentation can rival any NYC or LA top of the line cuisine! The portions were not family style, but plated for one person. The portion size was just a smidgen smaller than if you got it in a white to-go container, but you didn't miss the extra few bites. I'm thinking dress is a bit more than casual, although my husband and I walked in wearing jeans - they did not kick us out! I also think the prices are reasonable, with more simple dishes falling under $12 and the chef specials a bit more. read more

WISH THIS RESTAURANT IS IN NEW YORK CITY!!! I am a serious foodie and LOVE this restaurant. I can eat here every day... It is super tasty and clean, not like your standard greasy Chinese food and the decors are not bad. I am a small dish "tapas" eater, so most of my favorites are the apps... from the thin-skin wonton in gingery chicken broth (heavenly) to crispy seafood spring roll, to plump and juicy shrimp/crab shumai w pimento dipping sauce, Chicken lettuce wrap and pine nuts and the unbelievable spicy salmon sushi rolls (and they do brown rice when it is not so busy), tuna sashimi salad is another hit...and I do love fish, so when I have more friends with me, I'll go for the super fresh steamed sea bass with ginger and scallion or the miso glazed Chilean sea bass, also rack of lamb is sublime. They also have a creamy but not too sweet creme brulee that they make in house, a perfect ending. If you are near this place, just go and EAT! read more

I am very confused as to the price point of this place. While, yes, they do serve the best Chinese food in the area, why the heck does it cost so much?! I would steer clear of the more traditional Chinese food only so I can pretend like there is a reason for the high price tag. The reasons for coming here is the ambiance and the less traditional Chinese food. They have some interesting concoctions. I am so disappointed in the Chinese food -- it is about as standard as what I expect from a cheap (but good) Chinese restaurant in NYC's Chinatown, but has the price tag of a high end Chinese restaurant in Shanghai without any of the high end ingredients you'd expect to find. read more

I'm sad to write this review because I'm a huge fan of duck sauce but last night I didn't have the same experience that I'm used to. I didn't come on a busy night, it was pretty average compared to other times I've been there but I didn't get to talk to my server until about 15 minutes passed by. If it was very busy, I would have understood. We started with the won ton egg drop soup, which in my opinion was the best dish of the night. Then we got pork lo mein, general tso's and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon was very soggy and omg duck sauce, way to give me 1 tsp of sauce for the crab rangoon, skimpish much? The pork lo mein was suuuuuper oily and didn't have the same mirin taste that I'm used to here. I was super disappointed. With the general tso's I'm maybe thinking that I messed this up by requesting this to be "extra crispy" because I ended up getting "extra dry and chewy" Overall I was not impressed with my dining experience and got most of it boxed and ready to give away to other hungry family members. To be honest, I had fairly low expectations for Duck Sauce. While I currently am spoiled for choice in NYC, I did grow up in the 'burbs and was expecting the usual American Chinese grub. Duck Sauce impressed me by having good American Chinese food. The complimentary crispy noodles were fresh. The cast iron teapot was a nice touch too. Pan fried dumplings were a bit too oily for me and not crispy enough, but the wrapper was delicately thin & the pork filling was flavorful. The General Tso chicken wasn't spicy for me even though I saw a chili pepper - tasted more like sweet & sour to me but the texture and quality were good. Would go again. read more

Normally I enjoy the food from Duck Sauce, tonight however this was not the case. After ordering some takeout online, I was given an estimated pickup time twenty minutes later. I waited just under 2 hours and then was given cold food. Whatever issue caused the wait, I should have been given fresh hot food. No explanation, no apology! Total disgrace!! read more

The online ordering system for Duck Sauce is a cluster. Either they dont get the order, they wait til you arrive to start cooking, and/or the estimated wait time is a flat lie. If you want to order, CALL. Last time my husband waited an hour after placing an online order that was supposed to be ready in 20 minutes. The woman at the front desk rudely told him EVERYONE knows that you have to call to place an order. Tonight, hoping it was a fluke, i placed an online order and got a 20 minute ETA. It's Saturday night. Knowing there was no way that was true, I called. Sure enough, they had not received the online order and the ETA was 50 mins to an hour. Look, Im happy to call. Why pretend to have an online system??? UPDATE: i showed up after giving them an hour 10 and was told it would be another 5-10 minutes. TWO other customers were picking up and were told the same thing. They must be waiting to start cooking til people arrive. ALSO now if you use a credit card you get a 3% surcharge on your TOTAL bill. Thats way more than credit card companies charge. So now its a profit center and/or tax evasion. Wont be coming back. read more

We just moved into the area and was hoping to find a good Chinese restaurant in town. Saw the reviews for this place and was very hopeful. The table we were assigned was dirty. One if the seats was wet. The one page menus were sticky with someone's old food. The service was extremely slow because I think that there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant. His attitude was not that great and didn't seem to be accommodating for my wife's gluten intolerance or the fact that they were serving caffeinated tea at 7:30 at night (we just wanted decaf tea). "That is 2.50 more" The soup was good. I had the hot and sour soup and my wife had bean curd soup. Both were tasty. My wife had the chicken with broccoli. Old chicken taste to it. I confirmed. Bad is an understatement. I had the chicken with asparagus and decided to get a side of chicken lo mein. I would have liked to get just lo mein but I had to get a side which of course costs more. Same bad chicken in both of my dishes. We told the waiter of our opinion and he essentially told us "this way the chicken is cooked is how we do it for over 10 years". I'm not one to walk away from a meal however, both my chicken and asparagus were horrible. The lo mein was over cooked. The waiter removed my wife's meal from the bill which gave me the impression that my meal didn't count. Very disappointed to say the least. Fool me once shame on you ... It has been quite a few years (maybe 4 or 5?) since I have been to Duck Sauce, so the hiatus is finally broken. Duck Sauce has been tucked into the Whitehall House on the end of Main street for the last 15 years or so. For all the history nerds out there, it's on the National Registry of Historic Buildings (which I am, so I find it cool... so deal). The interior is nicley done with nicer versions of your basic Chinese restaurant decor; staples such as archways, dragons, Chinese inspired art... ect. Then the menu came.... This is where I really became frustrated, because Duck Sauce certainly earned 4 stars from me because they did nothing wrong. I got the sweet and sour chicken which was good. The person I was with got one of the vegetarian entrees which was also good. Service was good, the restaurant clean. Everything to warrant 4 stars from me. I became frustrated though because it was the exact same place as when it opened. Same decorations, same menu, same everything. I understand the axiom "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but I think if nothing else, menu's do need to updated from time to time. The food is what attracts people to a restaurant. Duck Sauce is still far better than your basic Chinese place. If you haven't been before, you should go because it is a nice little place. This is such a beautiful, clean place. The food is wonderful, there is quite a variety. The staff is incredible, and they make you feel welcome. I enjoy going to Duck Sauce a great deal. It is by far one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Prices are a relative thing, one would expect to pay more for the caliber of food and ambiance you get here. As long as your taste buds are in working order, they will delight in the joy of experiencing what Duck Sauce has to offer. read more

Recently ate at Duck Sauce. The new owners have improved on the food and service. I wrote a somewhat negative review after the new owners took over. The last two visits I found the food and service to be very good. I'd recommend this restaurant for fine Eurasian and Chinese Cusine. read more
