Went back tonight (NYE 2009) and decided to dine in - had the house fried rice again, the chili smoked shrimp and scallops, and the jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce. I've already commented on the house fried rice. The chili smoked shrimp and scallops we phenomenal. It was on the higher side of the price board for Duck Sauce, but it was very well executed. The smoke flavor imparted was strong, but not overpowering by any means. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly. The jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce was also very good. Spiced just enough to have attitude, but not replace "flavor" with just heat. The veg mix was OK, mostly zucchini and onions, with a hint of red pepper, snow pea, celery, and scallion. Oddly, there was a single 2" piece of asparagus. Unfortunately, when we first arrived, there was a YUPPIE mom berating her daughter about her """life choices""" at the only other occupied table in the place - the one next to us. But they soon departed. My only complaint about the interior is that it's a bit dark for my liking - I prefer to be able to see more of what I'm eating. The staff was courteous and attentive, and the young lady manning the front counter recalled my last visit. Once again, a great visit. Duck Sauce is the best Chinese food spot in Newtown. It's a little bit pricier than the others but it's worth it. The BBQ spare ribs are the best and we also like their wonton soup. The sesame chicken is very high quality with the perfect amount of breading. The staff is very friendly as well. 5 stars for Duck Sauce! read more

After this place was recommended to me, I took to reading through yelp reviews--I was excited to try this great place. The atmosphere is beautiful once you pull yourself through the tight fitting entrance, and the takeout food my husband and I ordered was cooked extremely fast. The food smelled amazing on our drive home, and we couldn't wait to try it. However, that's where the excitement ends. I ordered Pepper Steak and Wonton Soup, which is what I always order to mark the quality of a restaurant (weird, I know, but the cut of steak is so telling, as is the flavor of the sauce, and freshness of the vegetables). I was so, so disappointed. The soup's broth was like warm water, the wonton texture was floury and dry (how?), and the filling wasn't edible. The quality of beef (you cannot consider what I received to be steak) was subpar. It was so chewy and fatty, I couldn't do just that... chew it. The box was filled with red peppers and eggplant(?) pieces, but you'd never have guessed it. There was literally no flavor. It tasted like oily water... no soy flavor, no pepper flavor, no flavor of any sort other than beef. I poured the sauce onto my white rice to try and salvage some food, but it was the same--the sauce was utterly flavorless, and this is coming from someone who loves rather bland food generally. It was just that awful. My husband's dinner, General Tso's, had a good flavor for the sauce, but the chicken quality was again, subpar. He tried the soup and asked me how I even managed to eat as much as I did. Chinese food is my favorite cuisine. My husband's in the military and we've eaten at tons of places all over the country--Duck Sauce isn't at the worst of the list, but it was just not good. I hope it was a fluke, considering the high praise from so many, but if you're going to charge that much for a meal, try not using the scrap bits of meat that get thrown out. read more

This is the best chinese food I have ever had. I have lived in cities, traveled to china itself, and I currently live in Newtown. The staff is great, friendly, and accommodating! The owner is also very nice! I recommend their beef pad thai (yes I know it's not true chinese food but it's to die for), chicken lettuce wrap, and sesame beef. SO GOOD. read more

This place is in kind of a weird location and isn't obvious where it is if you are walking down the street. The restaurant is on the small side, with dim lighting. Nice vibe. We got sat right away. This was our second time I always give a second chance before saying anything negative. Way to "Foo Foo"! It's fine and dandy to try and put your own spin on things but straying to far from the base line you will vanish with the fad! I just came back from the west coast where just about every place is putting their own spin on thing and the west coast seems to have it mastered this place doesn't ! The vegetables in the dishes were fresh but barley cooked if at all and the seafood seemed to be on the verge of spoiling. Seafood should never smell like a low end fish market. Both visits the service was non existent and the cleanliness of the place is lacking and probably why it's so dark and not for atmosphere. I had heard that this was the place to go for Chinese in Newtown and I heard right! Everything we ordered was just perfect! I got the Chinese eggplant and vegetable dish--I ended up finishing off the large dish because it was so good I couldn't stop myself. We also got the lo mein snd the egg drop soup (it had corn in it, which I thought sounded weird, but was a delicious surprise!). To conclude, I really recommend this restaurant. It was busy when we came in, and I suspect that is a regular thing during the weekend, so just call ahead or make a reservation if you plan on going in at a popular time! And it is on street parking, though typically it shouldn't be too hard to find a spot so long as you do not mind walking just a little! read more

I had such high hopes for this restaurant. But it let me down as the meal progressed. Sitting on State Street in an unassuming location with no lit sign, Duck Sauce is a cute, well designed restaurant inside. Not casual; kind of like a PF Chang's fusion place, but on a family-owned non-chain scale. The menu is huge. Maybe too many choices. I got food to go for 3 of us on a recent business trip. The hostess was very helpful and friendly. Once I got the food out though, there were mixed reviews. Appetizers: 1) Pot Stickers: Good. Big portion and fresh, good pork filling. 2) Won Ton Soup: Also good. Good wontons, nice broth. 3) Chicken Wraps: Looked good but were blah. They were barely nibbled on. Entrees: 1) Broccoli Beef: Looked good but it was very blah. No flavor. Good quality meat and it was fresh, but it was just way too - well, blah! Came with a huge thing of rice. 2) Chicken with Vegetables: Looked OK. My co-worker ate it but didn't give any real feedback. I didn't try it. 3) Spicy Tuna Roll: not spicy and not very interesting. Only touched two of 8 pieces. 4) Chicken Chow Mein: Wouldn't know because my order got messed up. I got some sort of Chicken with veggies only it was mostly onions and it was slimy and gross. Duck Sauce is pretty much the only Asian fusion place I've been that was worth a damn. The decor is nice, about what you'd expect, but rather than bland japanese food or gussied up takeout fare, the food served at Duck Sauce was well prepared, unusual, and flavorful as all get-out. I started with the spicy thai seafood soup. It was rich, spicy, and excellent all around. The spice built slowly, it wasn't noticeable at first but was exactly right by the end. My entree was the roasted duck in port wine plum sauce. This was by far the best duck I've ever had. The sauce was a tad sweet, but the duck was cooked so well I didn't care. They even asked me how I wanted it cooked, which, I mean, how often does THAT happen with duck? This place is tremendous, in my opinion. My boyfriend and I tried this out on 1/23. Standard tea and won ton crunchies were ok. Same old same old. Won ton soup was light but good, 4 won tons per small bowl surprisingly. I had the Grilled Citrus Soy Chicken - flavors were good but boring. Not worth $14 He had General's Chicken - large globs of dough covered chicken dripping in sauce. He only at 3 of them. Service was slow and it seemed like all the employees were eating while we were there at 2:30pm right after opening. Overall, it wasn't a complete failure but we won't be returning. Hands-down one of the best places to eat in Newtown. First, it's BYOB, score. They've got two menus: Chinese and Eurasian. Chinese, you know what you get. A massive plate of food, and all of it's good. But the real stars are on the Eurasian menu. Here the food is beautifully arranged on the plate with delicious sauces. My favorite is the shrimp and scallops combo with pineapple rice. Delicious. They've also got a mean wonton soup. If you're in Newtown for lunch, this is a great place to know. This is a decentPF Chang's/Americanized Chinese food establishment. Is it authentic? Not quite but the dishes here are okay. The steamed sea bass with ginger and scallion was fresh (although the soy-sesame sauce was a tad bland) and the rack of lamb was tender and well-seasoned. The roast duck was overcooked though and the sauce was almost sickeningly sweet. I'll stick to Sang Kee for my duck next time, thank you very much. The chicken lettuce wraps were on par with Chang's. While it was plated with a cabbage-- the cabbage was also cooked in soy sauce, so lacked balance." Chicken with Eggplant (Chinese menu)-- oh dear, another brown sauce. Hoisin this time. The chicken breast slices were stir fried perfectly and the eggplant was good well. It was stir fried with scallions which were not quite strong enough to balance the hoisin sauce. This use to be my all time favorite Chinese Rest. The positive side was a pleasant and efficient waiter. Other than that it's not the same restaurant it use to be.....something has changed; food not at all as it was( my go to dish, chick lettuce wraps, were flat and disappointing) my husbands favorite was also different and disappointing. Most of all, we were turned off by the lack of management direction to the clean up staff. Bus people were milling around not knowing what to do, The carpet was left filthy, full of food debris throughout our dining experience of over 1 1/2 hour, tables were left for 30 minutes cluttered with dishes and left over food. How this has changed from when it was a packed reservations only restaurant to the declining food establishment it has become. So sad. I hope management gets it together again. My only complaint has been when I do bring a bottle, service is slow to open my wine. (first world problems) Well, on Mother's Day, they wowed us. Excellent service, great food. This used to be my favorite place to go at least once a week. I loved the lettuce wraps and the sesame beef!!! But new owners took over and everything on the menu changed. I ordered the lettuce wraps and what used to be all chicken is now some sort of filler with a few tiny chicken pieces sprinkled in. I thought they gave me the wrong order, but the waitress said new owners changed the menu!! I was shocked!! So I figured the sesame beef would surely be there same?? Nope!!! Again I was shocked and saddened by what I was given. I'm not even sure if it was beef! And the prices were the same! Let me start by saying I've been a regular customer of this place for over a decade. Once upon a time their food was second to none. You'd order something common like General's chicken and it would come out looking like a piece of fine art on a plate, and the taste was equally impressive. Those days are gone. Today I ordered chicken chow mein and it is clear that the cook there doesn't know what chow mein even means. Let me help them out: Chow means "fried" and mein means "noodles". Yet, there are was not a single noodle on my dish (see photo). What the heck? So, sitting there disappointed in my meal I tried the food from the others in my group. The General's chicken came out looking quite ordinary, so presentation is no longer exceptional. The wok seared beef had a weird sweet sauce for some reason? Everything was different. If it was my first time there I'd probably think it was OK, but as a long time customer I can tell everything has changed in a bad way. I believe they are under new management, or should I say mismanagement. I used to look forward to going here for lunch, now I am not sure if I will ever go back. Very disappointing. read more

My family and I absolutely loved this place the wonton soup was the best of anyplace we have ever been to with that said our last visit was a horrible one we started with the crunchy noodles that are served before you order we noticed that there was a long hair under the wax paper that noodles were on I told the front manager about it and she responded with oh that little hair and do you want another one I kindly declined soooo on to our meal I ordered chicken and broccoli and my wife had the beef and broccoli well the chicken tasted dry and old the worst part was the beef I tried a piece and had to spit it out absolutely horrible called the manager over and before I could say anything she said what another hair I was taken back by this and appalled I explained the the food was bad she continued to be rude and unapologetic very bad experience. I found out after that management has changed which explains it all. With much disappointment we will never ever return again. read more

Huge disappointment. We came here on a Wednesday night with a party of three. We were sat immediately & given waters & a basket of fried noodles w/dipping sauce which was actually very tasty & one of my favorite things here. But then our server disappeared for about 15 mins. The place was not even that busy & there was a group of servers hanging around a back computer just chatting. Our server finally came & took our order. We got lettuce wraps for an app, which were really good. For our entrees our server never put in our order of shrimp fried rice, which we really wanted but said forget about it because we were already annoyed. The General Tso's chicken which we requested extra spicy was SO bland & lacking flavor, super chewy & definitely not white meat. The rest of our party was not impressed with their meals and also commented on the poor quality of the meats used. They also sat a super noisy family with kids screaming in our ears before our entrees even came. I was tempted to leave then. They should have been sat away from the adults by the kitchen. Simply put: amazing. We came after 9 on a Saturday night. We got seated right away. Drinks in our hand in the first 5 minutes. For starters, we ordered the lettuce wraps and the philly roll. Make sure you check your order. I order over $40 worth of food and one item being sweet and sour chicken. I get home and there is no sweet and sour sauce for the sweet and sour chicken. I called and they don't deliver so they only can give me a credit to my account, which doesn't help if I don't live close or visit often. So I am supposed to drive back and let my food get cold?
