I've been coming here for a very, very long time. They used to be located off 6th in ktown & i followed them to the pico location. Even when I moved to West LA, I drove back here for all my car matters. Why am I so loyal? The big reasons are that they don't rip you off, they are truly honest and Duke always makes sure you are satisfied. I've been places where they try to convince me that I need all new brakes but Duke is always honest and will tell you that you have at least 6 months left on it (or whatever the truth is). This is the kind of honestly I need! They don't suggest unnecessary fixes because they are always busy and want to make sure you are a return customer. My entire family has been coming here for a very long time. I swear I wrote a review in the past so not sure why it's not showing up here. I love Duke Choi and his son. I have been using this car service joint for at least 10 years. I went to Jim Matson, and was concerned when Duke bought it because I didn't know the dude. He could have been slimy, rude, racist or inept. He could have treated me like a little Miss. But so far, so good. And I have been watching him, he is a mechanic after all. They are very susceptible to swindle-hood. Listen, I want a mechanic in my family like I want a lawyer, a doctor and a cop. The likelihood that your mechanic is shady is high, I'm just saying. It's comparable to those dummies with loud ass cars having a little weewee. Unless I am a fool, I think Sir Duke is a honest mechanic. I always double check his diagnosis and costs with my brother. After years of catching so many hustlers trying some funny business with my money, I have found a guy that I can't catch ripping me off. And boy, have I tried. He's much cheaper than a car dealer. His office is clean and organized. I mean, I wouldn't drink the coffee, but he's got his stuff in order. He's reliable. I always make an appointment. Came here to fix both my struts and my radiator--both within a 2 week time frame. Was met with a smile and gave me a great estimate on the repairs. Also, when my struts came from a different supplier that weren't they correct ones, they waited for the right ones to come and finish the job on Sunday morning--which they don't do. My partner had been told her car was about to go and needed a million things so she drove it lightly for another year and when she went to sell it had Duke look at it and he said it was completely fine! Now she wishes she kept it. I went in thinking I needed new brakes and he said nah you got another year! I will keep this brief and fact-based (see attached receipt). My friend who speaks limited English brought her car in for an oil change and a battery. Duke Choi charged her $405 and claimed he had done her a favor with a "discounted" rate. As you can see, he charged $16 for each quart of Mobil 1 and $19 for a filter + labor + disposal. All mechanics are entitled to make a reasonable profit, but $150 for an oil change is a fleecing - a parts mark-up of almost 200%. Standard mechanic's parts mark up is 25-50%. I called Duke to simply ask if he could give her a credit because the rate charged is not reasonable. We all know what an oil change goes for and it's not $150, not even at a dealer or with synthetic. Duke immediately raised his voice, and would not let me finish a sentence. He said he had "topped off fluids." He finally said he would give her $20, but she would have to come in and get it (she is in chemotherapy - which he knew - so it would have been nice if he had offered to mail her a check, but whatever). A few days later, he informed her (through another person we had previously recommended) that she was never to step foot on his property again. She did NOTHING wrong, Duke. All I questioned was your price. Are people not allowed to question you? If that makes you furious, take it up with ME instead of lashing out at everyone else. I am the one who told her the price was high. Your handling of this speaks volumes about your character and your business practices. I will never go to Duke Choi's again and neither will any of the people I previously sent to him. Jim Matson (previous owner) was a great mechanic that I and my friends had brought our cars to for years because he was pleasant, reasonable, and built trust with customers. Never had an issue with him. There are thousands of decent, fair mechanics in LA. Duke Choi is NOT one of them. Why give someone like this your business? read more

I merely called for a quote for a set of front brakes. The guy on the phone tried to suggest that I might need to change my brake rotor, LOL, which they would determine with a free diagnostic. He tried to explain it to me as if he were talking to a child, too--slowly and with some chuckles--perhaps because I'm a woman. I told him the dealership took a look at my brakes recently, and I really just need the brake pads. He said he can't give an exact estimate but that I should just go to the dealership for services if they quoted under $300 for brakes and under $500 for brakes + rotors. Loooooool. Not giving a 1 because I only called and didn't end up using their service. Based on other reviews, it looks like this place likes taking advantage of women. I was trying to support a Korean-owned business, but glad I didn't here. Ended up getting both an oil change and set of brakes at an honest no-bs or frills local shop. read more

My girlfriend recommended Duke Choi to me and she was right! I am not rich, I have a used 2010 Honda Odyssey. I went to some repair shop in Santa Monica to have my driver's side passenger door fixed (it wouldn't always open or close-and complete pain in the neck!) They charged me $900 AND stole my electric charger from the trunk (I should have known better than to leave it in the car!) and it was never really fixed. I was charged $303 for an oil change, a cabin air filter change, an engine filter change and a tire rotation. This normally costs me around $100-$150. When I tried to protest saying that was a ridiculous amount of money to be charged, I was told I was actually getting an $85 discount and I had premium oil, yada yada yada. If it wasn't the day before I was leaving on a road trip, I would have told them to kick rocks and would have gone elsewhere. Over charging women is a disgusting practice. But they did teach me a valuable lesson, always ask the price upfront. I will NEVER go back here and if you're a woman, I suggest you don't either. read more

Duke is awesome! He is friendly and honest! He hasn't let me down. He fixed my car twice. And gave me a great deal! He is my new mechanics that lives close by. I needed a place to go to since my other mechanic was not there and not fixing my car. Ugh. But this is about Yoon's place. So let's see I got my throttle injection cleaned. He made sure that it was done right and didn't charge me a arm and a leg. Then I had to come back maybe a couple months cause well I need a minor tune up but since I couldn't afford it the first time he made sure I could go with my car for a long time til I saved enough. There wasn't much wrong with my car but other than it dead. Ha ha ha ha ok major. So he checked it out nothing was wrong with it but he just did the minor tune up and didn't charge me a arm and leg. Gave me a great deal for the spark plugs. And had my car ready in 3 hours or more but had it done by closing times. I love how he is honest and trustworthy. Hope that doesn't change. And why didn't you tell me it was OFF? You conveniently turned it off because you had not repaired the problems on the initial visit. A visit where I paid $800 and didn't even get to Crenshaw before the light came back on with the SAME CODES showing up on the CEL. "Fixing a couple of items related to the CEL won't always make the vehicle 100%. Items that are tested as bad are replaced in a step by step process. This can add up in cost if the light persists and customers may understandably decline further service based on the current value of their vehicle." This is something you should told me ahead of time IF it's true. Basically, you are admitting that you guys didn't know what the problem was, so you can't fix it. Well so far so good :) I got a second opinion after going to Hana's Car repair that quoted $900-1200 worth of labor and parts to replace in my car!!! It was so much that i decided to get second opinion at Yoons car repair At Yoons shop they said everything was ok. And said that they will check again when i come next time for oild change. But for now my car is good!! He had to adjust my belt in my car because i changed about 6 months ago at Midas Beverly Hills and the belt was loose -.-!! So Yoon charged me $45 for checking my car and adjusting the belt. So great! :) thank you! read more

I agree with another review, as a woman (and also as a person that does not know anything about cars), from my very first visit I felt like I was treated with an honesty that I have never encountered with any other mechanic before. Duke and his team explain everything about what the problem is, where it's located, what needs to be done, and they show you on your car so that you have a better understanding. They always try to save me money and will give me little fixes here and there so that it's not a giant expense. I have a 20 year old Honda Civic, and it is still going strong!
