I have never had such an impossible time trying to make reservations for a restaurant. I called to make reservations and they told me they do not take reservations, but I would have to book my reservation for 10 people on open table. She said I have to book one table for six people and one table for four people, and there was no guarantee that the tables would be together. I dialed in and tried that, but it is impossible! Open table will only take one reservation. No one is able to book a second table for the same time. I did host my event with only a table of eight and we all had good service, good food, and good company. One of my guests and myself stayed late and we moved to the bar and then later upstairs to the bar to listen to live music. It was a very pleasant surprise. read more

We enjoyed our meal here. We had a reservation on a Saturday afternoon and were sat immediately. The hostess said we were "right by the window" but when we walked back, we were two tables back from the window, and the window is to the patio, so you still couldn't really see the view at all. We visited hoping to get lunch with a view, so this was a little disappointing. We ordered the Coconut Shrimp appetizer which I thought was really tasty. We ordered the Burger and Fish Tacos for entrees. Both were nice. Overall, the food is nice. The place is located in a beautiful spot in La Jolla, but the ambiance of the restaurant itself in the evening is brutal. The lightening throughout the entire place is terrible, even the restrooms. For this to be an upscale place, it was definitely lacking a soft feel. Not even music or something, Now the food. The food was average at best. The salad dressings seemed like they were store bought and the food itself was bland lacking flavor. For the price, and location, very disappointing. Now service, we were a party of 7 coming towards the end of the night, we spent a pretty penny in there for sure. We were trying to finish our beers and Prosecco when we were told we needed to wrap it up they were closing. We were celebrating a birthday that night and waiting on our Uber trying to finish alcohol and I felt that was super rude and unprofessional. It was not that late and we had just seen another table leave when the manager came and pretty much pushed us out. Our waitress herself was nice and told us it's ok you can finish your things. Who knows maybe they were playing good cop bad cop, but spending over $800 at the end of your night we shouldn't be rushed out. It is a place I wouldn't go back to if I had a choice. read more

We enjoyed our ocean view from the (heated) outdoor dining table - and timed it with the sunset. The Seafood Hot Pot was one of the best things I have had in a long time - I don't usually get hot pots or broth dishes, as the contents are usually not high quality. Duke's was a nice spot for dinner with friends during a weekend trip to La Jolla. We were looking for a casual restaurant after spending the day walking around the zoo. We checked out the menu in front of the restaurant and liked the options so we made a reservation for later that Saturday night. We started with cocktails since everything on the cocktail list sounded so good. All of the drinks turned out to be as good as they sounded. Our appetizer of choice was the Coconut Shrimp Croquettes. Most croquettes I've had are protein and filler, but these were all shrimp, no filler. The dipping sauce on the side was delicious. Our friends ordered Calamari and that was delicious as well. The Sauteed Macnut & Herb Crusted was a delicious entrée. All of the flavors on the plate and the preparation of the fish was perfect. My husband ordered the Banana Leaf Steamed Fish & Shrimp which was also a great dish. The flavors were awesome and the rice on the side was delicious. Dessert for me was the Malasadas which are basically a sugar donut, but a little more light and airy. These were very good, but should definitely be shared between two people. The guava jam for dipping sent these over the top. My husband had Key Lime Pie and enjoyed it. Our waitress was great. She was always available when we needed her and she made sure drinks were constantly refilled. She was also knowledgeable about the menu with recommendations when requested. The ambiance of the restaurant has a laid back Hawaiian feel. This would definitely be a great spot to sit back and relax with drinks and food on a nice day. read more

Fish tacos were well cooked but missing the uniqueness I remember. Lilikou tofu was grilled well but could have benefitted from being cooked or more strongly cooked with the glaze to get a carmelization. I came here with my family for July 4th! Views are incredible but if you have more than 4 ppl in your party you won't be seated next to the very very edge of the restaurant with the BEST VIEWS. And I like my unobstructed views you know what I mean? Regardless, you can see the ocean in the back and feel the breeze when sitting outdoors...very comfortable! Service was a little bit spotty...I'd say they seem kind of understaffed because our waiter kept forgetting things. We asked for extra napkins...didn't come...asked if salad came with every entree and she said yes...wasn't true. Coffee refilled dude was on point tho!! Food was good-great! Not sure I'd really put this at the top of my list tho...but if you wanna change up your brunch location, add it to the mix! I love Dukes, even though it's a chain. The only reason for the 4 stars is because it was so cold outside and the heaters just weren't enough. Our waitress was so sweet and she did bring me hot water to hold. It was my sisters birthday and the dessert they brought was amazing. We ordered the ahi maki and Ono for the fish dishes it was so flaky and soft and seasoned perfectly. We also ordered the poke which was so fresh and the calamari also delicious. Started my meal off with the Maui onion soup. I am a big fan of French onion soup, and this take on it did not disappoint. The onions were sweet and the croutons never got too soggy. The furikake ahi steak was fantastic. The ahi itself was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. We ate here today after a long bike ride. We were seated upstairs and decided to sit in the bar area to watch the AFC football game. Menu options are alright, but dang the portions are small. I ordered the fish with white rice, macaroni salad, and Bok Choy slaw for $18. My boyfriend ordered the Caesar salad and calamari (two appetizers). We both walked out hungry, and fairly unsatisfied. Disappointing that such inexpensive ingredients, (besides fish and calamari) ended up being so expensive. Oh well, we will go to a gas station and get an apple or something, who knows... The waiter just walks us to our seats and doesn't bring a menu or any water. We waited for a good 5-10 minutes and I HAD to ask for a menu and water. Just unfortunate as I've enjoyed Duke's but the service here was horrible. Sad to leave such a review. Extra star as the guy who helped was super nice. read more
