I've been to the mission location and this one is slightly smaller. we joined the waitlist and waited about 25-30 mins in total on a Tuesday night. the staff are super friendly and helpful! we ordered the: - Numb & Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao 香辣小笼汤包 ($10.95) - Juicy Pork Bao （6Pcs）猪肉生煎包 ($14.95) - (Dry) Dan Dan - House Special Sesame Paste with Mince Pork 担担面干 ($16.95) I loved the texture of the noodles and how thin the XLB skin was, but both the XLB and pan fried bao were way too sweet :"( the XLB and noodles were also not spicy at all.
Tried Dumpling Story for lunch and enjoyed this spot! Was seated right away and ordered the pig ear, green onion pancake, xiao long bao, dan dan noodles and fried dumpling. Everything was good and I'd definitely come back. Our server was also attentive. -pig ear: crunchy and had good flavor -green onion pancake: thin and crispy, it wasn't oily or heavy -beef xiao long bao: I liked this compared to your usual pork version, was filled with a good amount of soup as well -pan fried dumpling: this dumpling was on the heavier side with thicker skin so I only ate one. it was tasty but I'd want to try a different dumpling next time -dan dan noodles: yummy and light, I liked the smooth texture of the noodles
Unexpectedly wonderful Chinese spot. Based on the location in bougie pac heights, I was honestly a little skeptical. I was happily proven wrong by the absolutely delicious food at dumpling story. Everything we ate was wonderful but the vegetable bao was a real standout for me with its delightful texture and generous vegetables. The chicken wings were also phenomenally done with a crispy and delicious breading. Ambiance and service lovely. Prices reasonable, esp considering location and quality. Very good spot!
A really big fan! This may be my first time at Dumpling Story but it's probably my tenth at the Dumpling "X" restaurants. * The spicy XLB are always my favorite -- I *feel it's a bit spicier at Story than at Home, but I love that. And I may just be misremembering oops, haha. * The cucumber salad is good as always, crunchy and extra fresh. Obviously highly recommend since I frequent this place myself. Clean cute restaurant with friendly staff!
Dumpling Story is the fraternal twin of Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley. I came on a weeknight 30 minutes before we intended to eat (due to trauma of waiting over 2 hours for Dumpling Home), and to my surprise, there was no wait at all! The food is more or less the same as the sister restaurant, but not identical. They do have a few other offerings I don't remember seeing at Dumpling Home like curry dumplings. I have honestly never ordered any boiled dumplings because we always come specifically for the juicy pork bao and xiao long bao. Both restaurants carry the same varieties of xiao long bao and vegetables sides. A recent favorite order has been the eggplant, which has an almost gooey texture and served with bamboo + sweet/sour sauce. We always get both steamed and fried XLB (a.k.a Juicy pork Bao). They are the same dumpling but one is fried vs steamed; both are perfect and unqiue in their own ways. As always, the XLB are exceptional and even better than Din Tai Fung in my opinion. The ambience of this restaurant is a little more high brow than its counterparts so I would recommend this location if you want a nice dinner date out. This is certainly an SF institution and well executed second location!
Came here on a Saturday night for dinner. It was crowded and we didn't have a reservation, but only waited about 15 minutes. This was my first time having dumplings properly and I went all in. We got the chicken xia long bao, shiitake and chicken dumplings, chicken dumplings, shrimp egg and chive dumplings, garlic and chive noodles, and green beans. The chicken xia long bao was amazing. Super flavorful. Not too sweet, not too spicy. Just right in the middle. The shrimp egg and chive dumplings and the regular chicken dumplings were both very tasty. Definitely solid picks. The shiitake and chicken dumplings were not the ones to get. The garlic and chive noodles were great. Oily and tasty exactly how I'd want them. The green beans were surprisingly good too. Oily, garlicky, and packed with flavor. Service was very attentive. Our server clarified our questions and helped us decide what to order, which made the whole experience better.
The service was fast and kind. Everyone helped each other and multiple servers checked on us but not in an overwhelming way. The food was so fresh and flavorful. We tried the dry fried chicken wings- crunchy, tender, and a very flavorful sauce, the dry fried green beans- they were epic! Perfect crunch flavored and seasoned with love and care, and the beef bao buns - tender juicy meat and the broth inside was bursting with flavors Quaint and cute local eatery. It was a full house. But worth going to anyways.
I've been here a couple times now and can confirm the consistency of their dumplings and dishes!!! Ahhh!!! go go go go The good: - best crab XLB I've had. - really amazing green beans - best noodle texture for the beef noodle soup I've come across.. silky and delicious!!! - really unique cocktails and good view at the bar The meh: Nothing. Consider me a happy regular.
Dumpling Story on Fillmore Street on Pacific Heights neighborhood perfect for post Thanksgiving meal weekend (or any time actually). We have been at their Valencia Street location in San Francisco Mission District a few months and had enough food for a small army afterwards. All spectacular dishes and very appealing. This time we had a Sunday afternoon brunch with our @uhmanoanews University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Junior Class son who mostly took care of any possible "doggie bags". He loved everything on the menu! We shared "Family Style"; Shrimp & Squash Xiao Beef Xiao Long Bao Dry-Fried Chicken Wings Gong back Chicken Dumplings Mogolian Beef Dumplings Pan Fried Juicy Chicken Bao Dry cooked green beans Tomato & egg noodles Jasmine tea We are now BIG fans of Dumplings Story at BOTH locations. The Valencia Street is much larger Venue but BOTH are super and consistent in service, ambiance and freshly prepared Dumplings. Bravo! Encore! Great & friendly service too!
We ordered almost everything off the menu and each item was AMAZING. AMAZIIIIING! My favorite was the one with the peanut sauce. I couldn't stop eating it! The servers were also super friendly and helpful in giving tips on what to order. This trip was for my anniversary and we ate at a couple of really nice restaurants, including michelin star ones, but this was our favorite!!! I wanna go back!
Came here with a friend on a weekday for dinner and we waited approximately 20 minutes until we were seated. Waiting on a weekday?! That's how you know a spot has to be good! These are hands down the best xiaolongbao that I have had, and I'm not a big fan of it admittedly. The meat quality and chewy QQ skin blew me away. Be sure to ask for soy sauce or vinegar, they don't give it to you at the table. The shengjianbao filling was also the juiciest I've ever had, but at the end of the day it truly comes down to preference. I prefer the fluffier skin, while she prefers the ones with a thinner and less doughy exterior. I really enjoyed my meal here, two items is more than enough for two people but I really wanted to try more from Dumpling Story. This will have to be a visit for another day...

Excellent service and tasty dumplings of all sorts. Lots of vegetarian options too! We've gone twice so far, it's busy but not usually too difficult to get a table, service is quick and staff are very friendly. read more
My friends and I stopped by for early dinner (5:30) and good thing we did because as soon as 6pm rolled around the restaurant was packed! We ordered the sesame chili oil dumplings (our favorite), the soup dumplings (second favorite), and steamed beef dumplings (only okay). The beef in the beef dumplings has a weird ground beef texture which we didn't love. Also flavor wise it was just not as good as the other dumplings. The tomato eggs noodles were kinda weird but also not bad. It was like Asian spaghetti. I probably wouldn't get it again but it was good to try. The noodle texture was great! Overall dumplings were super yummy and I'd come again to try other kinds. read more
Worth the try: crab pork XLB, juicy pork bao Jelly Fish Salad: served with green onion dressing, perfectly soft and chewy, not too firm or hard to bite into as it can be at some other places. I usually don't order this but I'm glad we did, I kept reaching for more! Crab Pork XLB: steamed soup dumplings with crab and pork inside. The crab flavor was prominent but not overpowering! Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Dumpling: boiled dumplings, these were also juice and flavorful. Juicy Pork Bao: pan fried pork bao, and when they say juicy they mean JUICY. These are some of the best pork baos I've had, and I've had my fair share. They're fried well, not too greasy, and have TONS of flavor. Dry Shrimp Egg Chives Pockets: fried pockets with shrimp, egg, chives inside. These were large and stuffffed with fillings. Has a perfect crisp to it for such a big, stuffed piece. Dan Dan Noodles: your typical spicy noodle, had a nice mala kick to it. Dry Cooked Green Bean: standard green beans, cooked well without being too greasy. PARKING: Metered street parking available in front of the store as well as nearby. SERVICE: We were quickly seated on a Wednesday @ 6 PM. Waiters were quick to get our order, serve our food, fill our waters, and clean the table! ATMOSPHERE: Decent-sized restaurant in a cute, bustling neighborhood in Pac Heights. Ample indoor seating but the place does get filled. We saw a few people waiting outside by the time we left. My girlfriends and I have been wanting to try this dumpling spot and came for a casual weekday dinner. There are so many "Dumpling _____" restaurants it's hard to hit them all and know which ones are good and deserve going back to. I've got to say though, Dumpling Story is one Dumpling _______ restaurant in the city I'd recommend going to and keep going back to. Everything we ordered was delicious, service was great, and I love the neighborhood that it's in. So glad we came here, can't wait to come back for more! read more

My friend suggested lunch here today. I arrived before she did at 11:30am. Soon afterwards other diners began to stream in. Once my friend arrived we ordered off a reusable menu where you use an erasable black marker. We ordered: * pan fried juicy pork dumplings - right balance of meat and broth * small order steamed beef XLB - plenty of broth. * deep fried chicken wings - nice glaze and coating very crunchy * shrimp noodle soup bowl - boring. We thought we could have made this ourselves at home. Service was quick and efficient. A printout of your order is taped to the table. As each item is delivered to your table, the item is marked off. The biggest con - the physical table layout. Most of the tables have attached bench seats alongside the wall. And the opposing seats are munchkin like. Tiny round seats that are very uncomfortable and not safe. Tiny legs. Both my friend and I sat on the bench seat. My guess is that they don't want you to linger. Eat and run. 4 stars for food and service. 2.5 stars for the four legged stools. read more

I had a wonderful meal at Dumpling Story after a highly inspired shopping stroll along Fillmore Street. The shop is small but cute with charming modern decor. A few tables are located outside and the interior, although small, accommodates a hungry crowd! We arrived for an early 6 pm weekday dinner which was a plus as it filled quickly as we enjoyed our meal. This was my first venture into juicy bao buns so I was very excited. We were able to efficiently select from a menu card upon which we indicated our choices with a dry erase marker. Service was attentive throughout our visit. We had ... Pork XL Bao Shrimp Loofah XL Bao - my favorite Numb & Spicy Pork Bao - oooh, delightfully spicy tingly - a must try Zha Jiang Noodle Dry Dry Cooked Green Bean All the items tasted fresh and were delightfully presented. I would recommend choosing more of a variety of dumplings and omitting the other entrees to make more room for delicious tastings! Went here around 7 pm a Saturday and it was about 40 minutes, we just hung walked around and their estimate was pretty accurate. The service was really nice as well. We ordered a bunch of dishes and overall it was pretty good. My friends really liked all of the xiao long Bao but tbh I thought they were some of the more mid ones I've had. I just thought both the broth and meat weren't the best, I feel like the meat didn't have enough seasoning for me. I also expected the spicy sauce ones to be more like Szechuan -y and it wasn't for me. The Dan Dan noodles were really good tho, some of the best ive had. Came to Dumpling Story and enjoyed the experience! I also think this location is easier to get a seat than Dumpling Home. Funny, I thought they were competitors for a second until I realized how eerily similar the two were, down to the menus. Started our meal with marinated pig ears, a classic! The marinade was delicious and sufficiently garlicky but I would have liked for the ears to be cut just a hair bit thinner. Next out were our XLB - we went for original and mala. I personally liked the mala more. The mala added a bit of excitement though it wasn't actually tingly. I also thought the original was slightly sweet which wasn't expected. For the pan fried buns we tried the chicken version, you know, for health. The juice was very flavorful but the chicken meat within left a bit to be desired. The pork and napa cabbage dumplings were probably my top dish of the night. The skins were supple and perfectly chewy. Super fresh! The filling was meaty and sweet from the cabbage, a really nice bite! We also added the tomato egg noodles. Tomato eggs is a classic Cantonese dish. Putting it over noodles only makes it even better! The noodles here have a really nice bounce and chew but the dish was a bit sweet. A little splash of vinegar would have gone a long way in my opinion. Overall, very filling meal! It was a super nice day out and arrived shortly after 5pm and they seated me even though my party of 3 wasn't fully present. * Pan fried juicy beef bao $15.95 for 6 - Definitely do not eat it in one bite! Bite just the tip but be cautious for the broth to come out. I usually place this in a spoon so the broth can spill in there. * beef tongue boiled in the "thousand year old sauce" $12.95 * pork xiao long bao $8.95 for 4 * dry cooked green beans $13.95 * pan fried egg yolk lava bao $19.75 Good place if you're in the area and want dumplings but next time I'm here I would want to try out more of the spicy options since everything we tried was decent and nothing really stood out from other dumpling spots. read more
As someone who doesn't eat pork, good dumplings can be hard to find but Dumpling Story in Pac Heights offers an extensive menu with so many meat varieties! The wait can be quite long but Fillmore is an easy place to walk around and kill time. We got the pan fried chicken baos and the beef Xiao long baos - both were really flavorful with great texture! Service was a little slow - we had to ask for chili oil multiple times, but other than that, definitely recommend visiting! read more

Ordered the pork xiao long bao, cucumber salad, green beans, Dan Dan noodles, and pan fried pork baos. The pan fried baos and xiao long bao were so juicy and delicious! Be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy times, but it's definitely worth it for the quality of food. I'll be coming back for more! read more
Impressively clean new Chinese dumpling place in the Fillmore, on Fillmore! We arrived about 40 minutes past the lunch hour on a Wednesday, and found nearly every table either occupied or about to accommodate new diners. We put our name on the waitlist and were called up in about 8 minutes and led to our table. Upscale ish in interior design, yet due to the simple stools and checkbox menu, The feeling is of a night market or casual eatery but with nice decor and service. All of the staff was unobtrusive, courteous and efficient. They hustle to get you your order. Our order came out rapidly within a few minutes, almost all arriving at once kicking off with the cold-plate appetizers of cucumber and wood ear mushrooms to prep your palate. Delicate flavors throughout, nothing overly salted or overdone. You can really taste the sweetness of the pork in the XLBs that we ordered. Plenty of juice inside both the XLBs and pan-fried pork dumplings. Garlic lovers can rejoice in the garlic string beans which were perfectly fried - not charred and just a hint of crunch and tender on the inside. Beef shank soup - tender beef that just falls off the shank in a light broth. It's a nice neutral complement to the other dishes. So much to enjoy here. We will definitely be back whenever we are near the Fillmore. read more

The first thing I walked in, I loved the ambience and the interior of this restaurant was beautiful and we were able to get our table really fast. It was great that we were greeted by the servers with great hospitality. The food was amazing and I would definitely revisit this place again. read more

My friend and I came here on a Thursday afternoon and it wasn't busy. The place was very clean and the staff were very attentive. We got the green beans, pork pan fried dumplings, and wontons in chili oil Green beans 10/10 -The green beans tasted fresh and were full of flavor, not too salty Pork pan fry dumplings 9/10 -The outer wrapping was a bit dry/thick and hard to chew but other than that it was delicious Wontons in chili oil 8.5/10 -The wontons had only a little bit of chili oil, since there was little sauce I think it got absorbed. Halfway through the meal the sesame paste coated the wontons and it created a thick peanut butter texture. Good but needs more sauce/chili oil read more
Got the shen jian bao and the dan dan noodles. We really enjoyed the shenjianbao. Super great soup flavor! We thought the texture of the bao could be improved though. The noodles were tasty too but flavor could have been improved as well. Still a solid spot and left happy and full! Service was super attentive and friendly despite the business. Parking is a nightmare but the XLBs were pretty good. We came on Saturday for lunch and immediately got seated at one of their round tables. We ordered a bunch of staples for a party of 4 and the highlights were the pig ears, pan fried pork buns, and their XLBs. At first, I was skeptical because this location felt like it would have been very catered to the neighborhood. But it's pretty authentic! MICHELIN STAR quality!! I love Dumpling Story. I travel 40 miles one way regularly to come here. So delicious every single time, every single dish! I recommend their Dry-fried Chicken Wings, Pork Xiao Long Bao, Ginger and Green Onion Noodles, and Fresh Cucumber with Garlic Sauce. Their service is speedy so if you see a long line out the door don't worry you will be inside in no time. The staff here is so friendly and efficient. We especially enjoy seeing Adrian he always takes good care of us but everyone here is wonderful! I highly recommend dining at Dumpling Story! read more

The dumplings here are slightly pricy but they are outstanding. The pork soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings were my favourite, and I also loved the colour on the vegetarian dumpling. I will say that the dan dan noodles were quite lacklustre (not spicy, lack of peanut flavour) and the scallion pancake also lacked colour. My white friend pretty much devoured the bowl of hot and sour soup! Also love that there are posters on the wall that explain the proper way to eat a soup dumpling with diagrams. read more

Decent place for dumplings, super similar to dumpling home. Good dumplings and good service, everything else might be hit or miss Fried chicken - 4.5/5, well fried and crispy chicken coated in a sweet sauce. Chicken inside is tender and meaty. Yum! Pan fried dumpling - 4/5, juicy and tender. Good flavor and soft skin on top, nicely crisp on bottom. Xiao long bao - 4.5/5, juicy and tender with a burst of flavor. The skin is also thin enough to enjoy but thick enough to pick up. Dan dan mein - 3/5, was alright, was very light on the flavor profile. Green onion pancake - 3.5/5, hard to mess up. Flaky and tasty with lots of green onion. Chili wonton - 2.5/5, the flavor on this one was lacking. The chili oil had a tiny spice but didn't have too much flavor. read more

The food was good, but I've definitely had better, would still recommend if you're in the area and craving dumplings (would skip on the green onion pancake and spring rolls, cucumbers were okay). The service was fast and pleasant and I loved the ambiance. read more

Tried so many dim sum places and thought they would be similar but this place over my expectation. The restaurant inside was bright and clean, service was nice and friendly. Foods came out fast and tasty with reasonably prices. Highly recommended and definitely be back. read more

Great place to come during lunch. My recommendations are the xioa long bao soup dumplings (5/5). I didn't like the fried version since the fried dough portion was too hard (4/5). The wonton soup (5/5) is great as well. Flavorful broth with delicious wonton filling, I believe they're the same as their soup dumplings. I enjoyed this soup much more than their brisket noodle (4/5) and their Dan Dan noodles (3.5/5) because I found it more flavorful as a dish. read more
There are not a lot of options in the Pacific Heights area for good dumplings, so if you live in the area this will likely become your go-to spot. The XLB's here are amazing. The skin is not too thick, like at a lot of other places. Both the classic pork ones and the pork and crab combo ones are impressive, and better than the ones you would get at most places in SF. The juicy pork baos are also on of my favorites. They aren't lying, they are SO juicy. This place can often have a wait, and it is more expensive than your typical dumpling spot, but totally worth it! Best Dishes: -Juicy pork baos -Pork XLM -Crab XLB Also good: - Pig Ears- pretty good, if you are not weirded out by the chewy texture and the a name of the dish. It has a great spice, vinegar, and garlic sauce to it. Could be improved: -Dan dan noodles should be wetter and completed covered in an oily and peanut sauce. Good! Enjoyed most of the food here. If I ever see green beans or dry fried chicken I will always order it. The green beans were very good, and so were the wings. I thought they would be similar to San Tungs, but it tasted more like Korean Fried Chicken to me. Everything was great, but I would probably skip the wings (Pricey & only like 5 per order) and the mongolian beef dumplings (Meh). read more
Warm fresh dumplings on a cold sf day? Say less. We waited only for about 10 min to get seated after getting on the Yelp waitlist at the kiosk - it's a relatively intimate seating area as the restaurant itself is on the smaller end, so perfect for groups 2-4! We ordered the following items: 1) Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao - pretty dang juicy and had a nice after/spice with the chili oil-laden filling 2) Brussel Sprouts - surprisingly crispy and well-seasoned 3) Pan fried pork dumplings - HOT so be careful but a delicious hybrid between soup dumps and crispy potstickers 4) Dan Dan noodles - ordered this due to all the Yelp photos and it did not disappoint, as the noodles were fresh and chewy, and there was just the right amount of pork and cucumber carrot to mix in Great go-to on Fillmore! Whenever I go to a dumpling spot, I don't usually expect it to be any different from the usual spot that serves this kind of food, considering I've eaten a lot of it growing up. Well, Dumpling Story is definitely different. The soup in their xiao long bao was amazing, but keep in mind it's on the sweeter side. The juicy pork baos were also great and had the classic crispy bottom and excellent broth, but in my opinion...the place from my hometown where I always got these buns are still better, but that could be nostalgia working against me. Nevertheless, the ones here were still amazing! Cucumber was really sweet but very refreshing thanks to the rice vinegar, which they thankfully don't go overboard on. I came in on a rainy day, where it seemed pretty busy, but we got in relatively quickly. Head server was extremely friendly and made some conversation with us to make us feel more welcome in here. The interior makes it feel like it's cozy yet elevated, which is actually a great way to also describe the food! Anyway, after coming here, I get the hype, and I was glad I got to come here without having to endure the wait I expect at the original Dumpling Home. Love it! read more

We've been visiting San Francisco for the first time over the last few days and this is by FAR the best food we've had since getting here - and we've had a LOT of great food. The flavor in all of the dishes was exceptional and the service was so quick once we were seated. I would kill to have a place like this back in Minneapolis. Whenever I'm back again, this will be a non-negotiable for a place to stop! read more
I've been to Dumpling Home plenty of times, and was in the area and wanted to try out Dumpling Story. As expected, the dumplings were *chefs kiss* and perfectly done. The rest of the food, however, was a bit of a letdown. Some of the tofu dishes were a big soggy and lacking in flavor, the noodles weren't anything special, and the chicken wings were hands down the WORST chicken wings I've had in my entire life. I took a couple bites of mine and couldn't even finish it, and our group of 5 couldn't even finish them they were that bad. I'm not sure if we just got a bad batch, but the chicken tasted super gamey, more like duck than chicken.
