They have wooden tables with different types of sauces on them. This place it's casual but not a hole in the wall. We decided to start with two orders of dumplings. The pork/chives and chicken/shrimp /cilantro both pan fried. Both were good but I really enjoyed the chicken, shrimp & cilantro more. The flavor was right on point. Let me start by saying I never had a bao before so I don't have much to compare it to but I was eager to try my first one. We went with the melt in your mouth pork belly and braised beef baos. The pork belly was good but the braised beef was delicious. I loved the beef and I could have eaten a whole plate of that. I have walked by this place a few times since they have opened. Their menu seemed small but it looked really good, so I ordered a little of almost everything. I had their beef and Kimchi dumplings which were pretty good. It did not have the spicy component that I expected. It was filled with more meat than kimchi. I also ordered their braised beef and noodles, pork belly noodle soup, plus sliced braised beef bao. For an extra $1.00 you can get their fresh homemade ramen noodles. Dumplings & Things is pretty nice dumpling shop that offers a lot of food for a modest price. However, it's not without it's faults in that its food (the dishes I tried, anyways) left much to be desired. The Food: We ordered three orders of dumplings (5 dumplings an order) -- the chicken, shrimp and cilantro dumplings (steamed), the pork and napa cabbage dumplings (steamed), and the spicy kimchi dumplings (fried). We also had an order of the porkbelly bao, and the "melt in your mouth" pork belly noodles with soup. The dumplings are massive (probably 1.5/2 times the size of your typical dumpling), which comes with the trade-off of the wrapper being thicker than normal so that it does not break. Food recommendations (or not): I'd would not recommend the chicken, shrimp and cilantro dumplings. I often wondered why chicken isn't frequently used in dumplings, and it turns out it is because chicken is a more firm, lean, and dry meat without strong flavor (stating the obvious, I guess), which was the case here. The pork-napa cabbage dumplings are pretty good, and so are the kimchi dumplings. I'd probably recommend getting them steamed, as the wrapper is even tougher to bite through when fried. However, note that all of the dumplings, while large and packed with pork, were hindered by a thick, tough wrapper. While I'd recommend getting the pork/napa and kimchi dumplings if you go, I cannot recommend actually going FOR them. Regarding the "melt in your mouth" pork belly with noodle soup -- it was fine -- you get a large bowl, a lot of noodles, and several large slices of pork belly (with a nominal amount of leaf vegetables). The broth is good, but tasted akin to your standard beef bouillon; the noodles were good, but had the consistency of your standard Maruchan Ramen packet (didn't seem like la-mian, nor did it claim to be); and the "melt in your mouth" pork belly didn't really "melt in your mouth", at all. So while good/tasty, fell below expectations. The pork belly bao was fine, but the pork belly was tough, making it difficult to bite through the bao. The staff member who was there was friendly, kind, and helpful when asking for recommendations. Suggestions: It seems that the dumpling wrapper is so thick and tough because cold water was used to make the dough. A dough prepared with warm water would likely make it much softer, even if you need to keep it thick so the filling doesn't break the wrap. In terms of atmosphere -- putting some light, neutral music that goes with whatever theme or style you want to set for the place would make it much more welcoming and provide some additional character for the shop. All in all, while you get a lot of food for the money (making it a great buy for anyone who wants to go out and bulk up!), the food offerings fell well below expectations in terms of taste satisfaction. read more

Very impressed! Been there twice already and both times were delicious. First time we ordered the pork & chive dumplings fried (awesome!), chicken cilantro dumplings steamed (good, would have been better fried), scallion pancakes (best I've ever had!) and the pork belly buns (delicious, could use some sauce). We went on opening day and still only waited 15 mins. Also had a tasty jasmine iced tea. Second time there tried the noodle soups. Husband had the dumpling soup (noodles and 5 dumplings) which he found very filling! I had the braised beef noodle soup and it was very tasty, added some hot sauce and it was perfect. A friend and I came in on a Saturday afternoon for a little midday snack. We ordered veggie dumplings and some of the Melt in Your Mouth Pork Belly Noodle soup. When we received our food, I first thought the server had been mistaken because none of it was what we ordered. But as it turned out, we were severely misunderstood. She had brought pork buns and an order of steamed greens. When I informed her this wasn't what we ordered, she grew very frustrated and treated us as if we had done something wrong. Truthfully if we hadn't already paid, I would've told them to keep it and left. After much persistence, we got the order corrected. The veggie dumplings were absolutely delicious. They were large and generously stuffed, a great deal for less than $5. The noodle soup was just okay. The pork belly was very dry and definitely nowhere near "melt in your mouth" as advertised. The broth could've been a little richer tasting, but you do get a ton of noodles, so that's a plus. If service were better, I would feel more justified to give it a higher rating. read more

There was a mass exodus that went straight from the evening 7 train to this restaurant! Glad to see them doing so well in less than one week of being open. First of all, I'm glad that there is finally a decent place to get Chinese food in Sunnyside, and the prices are really perfect. They offer a very good selection in their menu, and the ambience is just right for a noodle shop - not too fancy and not hole in the wall. I had the pork and cabbage dumpling, and it was pretty good. As other reviewers said, these are not dumplings to blow your mind, but they are really great for the price - plenty of meat in them! I also got the melt in your mouth pork belly noodle soup, but the noodles were way too soft and soggy by the time I got home. I was hoping I could just grab noodles after work to bring home, but next time I'll get noodles to stay. I thought the best parts of the meal were the sauce and broth. The dumplings were horrible: the dough was hard to chew; the staffing inside was basically a meat ball; and the wrap was super thick. Im not trying to be picky but I have to say the dumplings here don't taste like real dumplings at all!! Thhe only thing I liked about the soup was the stewed pork/beef because they were tender. The concept is better than the execution at this point. The menu size is just right, going a bit beyond dumplings with a variety of low-priced, modular offerings. They're friendly and fast. The hot oil wontons were a must-skip. They were more salty than spicy and the filling was a one-dimensional pork flavor. Since there's no option to give half stars (to give 3.5) I'll be generous and give a 4, because they do have a lot of potential. Let's start off with the soy sauce being SO GOOD. Not too salty, not too acidic, and not too sweet. It's perfect. Where can I buy it?? And they have these pretty tasty organic looking soda drinks. I drank the Dry Blood Orange, and my only wish is that it came in a bigger bottle. I'm not a soda person, and I would have drank the entire thing myself.. but it belonged to the bf. :( The Chicken, Shrimp & Cilantro dumplings are reeeally good & they're actually fried well and not just from the bottom. They were a bit hard from the inside (maybe the shrimp?) but still really good. I'd get it again. The Dumpling Noodle Soup has a unique broth that actually tastes good on its own without adding any sauces. Although the noodles aren't hand pulled like the dumpling house place, they're still soft, tasty, and don't taste like a frozen mess. The place is small but cozy. The decor is simple but nice. & if you got a big booty, I suggest you take your food to go! The seats can only handle so much booty. It's also cash only, which isn't that much of a bad thing because it's located literally a minute away from Chase bank and Bank of America. I hope they stay for the long run! I had not had a chance to try this place since it opened, a couple of times I went and they were out of dumplings or it was way too packed. It's been a little less crowded now that it's summer and my experience was so good I returned a second night in a row. So far I've only had the dumplings. The dumplings are dense and flavor packed but not overly doughy, though not quite as light and fluffy as one might associate with a top Flushing or Chinatown dumpling place. However they are on the larger side and very reasonably priced for the freshness. I have tried the four meat flavored offerings, and done 2 fried and 2 steamed. The spicy beef and kimchi had the thickest dough but I don't know if that's how they are always made or if it was only that batch. I am happy with this great addition to the neighborhood! Unfortunately, they are no longer up to the same standards as before. The pork dumplings, for example, are filled with fat and no meat, the pork over rice is mostly fat as well. I don't know the reason for the decline, but I will go back next month and try their pork dumplings again, if they have improved their quality I will update this review with a better one.
