This place makes you feel sad. It is a weird mixture of a nice restaurant with fabric napkins and just a generic American grill. We also felt pressured into buying dessert by the way our waiter pulled out a big white board and started reading everything on the menu. The food was okay. It sounds good on the menu, but it really isn't all that great. And it was way too expensive for what it tasted like. Just FYI, we had the calamari, duo burger, and creme brulee. So if you really wanna try this place, I recommend getting something other than those things, because they didn't impress us. This is a new restaurant in El Cerrito we stumbled on. Really nice interior and great staff. We had a delish dinner! I and two others had the open face Dungeness crab sandwich which was loaded with crab on toasty bread with cheese, tomato and it came with a side. Two friends had the short rib sandwich which they raved about and my daughter had a chicken pasta which she loved. Only weird thing is you have to go through the kitchen doors to access a back hallway with the bathrooms. It would class the joint up if they put up a wall or barrier. I had the corned beef hash today and it was the best I have had anywhere. I am not surprised they were voted best breakfast. I've been going here for years and every time it has exceeded my expectations. I always order their incredible salmon. The owner Joel always takes extra special attention to all of the customers. I read the reviews and decided to go there yesterday with a friend. First, let me say that the service is truly exceptional. I asked the waiter to put the bacon bits on the side because my friend wanted them but I don't eat meat. When the warm spinach salad came out, not only were the bacon bits on the side (and she said were excellent and made from freshly cooked bacon ) but they had split the salad perfectly without my asking. All of the service was perfect the whole meal. The shrimp taco was fresh and good, the chicken quesadillas were loved by my friend (she said that they broiled the chicken breast perfectly) and my fish and chips were fine, especially because they substituted exquisite sweet potato fries for regular ones at my request. The only disappointment to both of us was their "chocolate mousse cake" which had no mousse and almost no chocolate flavor at all. We would never get that again. But everything else was fine or better and I'm happily going back again for a friend's birthday in two weeks. By the way, the prices are very fair, too. read more

Came on the recommendation of friends, and we were pleasantly surprised! Both an American and Mexican menu for dinner. Don't miss the crab and artichoke appetizer ! I had the Mexican relleno plate which was very good if a little spicy, my husband had the blackened salmon salad which was excellent. Good portion sizes. Good desserts and we'll priced. Today I had the Sicilian omelette (spinach, onion, tomato, pesto, and feta) with their Parmesan roasted potatoes and gluten free toast. Everything was totally delicious. I'll try and be brief. One of the absolute best burgers in Berkeley -- specifically their signature "Duo Burger" (I always add bacon). There are a couple truly great burgers in this city, but I AM TELLING YOU this one is up there at the TOP. I wouldn't even normally go for this style of burger or its toppings but I just went with it and...well, what else can I say. (I do, however, always ask them to add bacon.) And secondly, the owner is incredibly nice. The service was great the few times I've gone or ordered takeout, and I can't recommend them more highly. My only suggestion to them would be to spruce up the interior at some point, maybe like more of a classic diner feel or something (obviously more of a post-pandemic priority). 5 Stars! read more

We've only got our stuff to go, but the service is so good. They never make a mistake on our order and they substitute the bread, cheese, etc without any hesitation. Their portions are great for the price. Duo burger, bacon cheese burger, and chicken sandwich are yummy! Love they have side options... French fries, sweet potato fries, or side salad. We always get the sweet potato fries which are perfect..we still need to try the breakfast which I hear is fabulous. We get food here pretty much once a week. I just had a wonderful eggs florentine benedict. The eggs were perfectly poached, the hollandaise was tangy and the English muffin was still crunchy (not soggy from the spinach), really delicious. My friend had the buffalo chicken salad and loved it too. The staff was very attentive and we felt very covid-safe dining here: the table was freshly wiped down before we were seated, we were brought a bottle of sanitizer for the table, and the wait staff waited respectfully until we were masked until they approached the table (and always wore masks themselves). We are trying to support local restaurants during the pandemic, but this is the first place I have felt completely comfortable coming back to. They have a great menu, can't wait to come back again and try more items. read more

We ate at Duo Grill House for the first time today after graduation, and it won't be our last time. The outdoor seating was comfy and the service was welcoming and attentive, giving us prompt service that also made us feel relaxed. I wondered if the menu was so broad that they couldn't accomplish everything well, but everything we had was so good. We ordered from the breakfast menu (it was around 12:30) as well as the Mexican and lunch sections. Open faced Crab sandwich was really good, carnitas tacos were excellent, and the hill of hashbrowns was just what the person who ordered it needed! Nice portion size, reasonable prices. The food here is simply not good, and is $6 to $8 overpriced for the quantity and quality. I last ordered the fried chicken and waffles. It turned out to be processed chicken tenders and waffles that were obviously premade. They didn't taste good. I'm pretty sure this is a freezer-to-fryer restaurant. We wandered in by accident. I think the poached eggs I had, with corned beef, was the best egg dish I ever had. The coffee was strong, the courtesy impeccable, the booths very comfortable. We had lunch at Duo today, the second time we've eaten there. I'm not...err, wasn't a French fry fan, but the sweet potato fries my husband got were delicious (better than the regular ones I got), and the ribs were great! Got the ribs without coconut on top, as he doesn't like coconut, and the meat was fall off the bone, not fatty, and the sauce just right--not too sweet. I got a rib sandwich but, since he was aggravated about something and hence eating up a storm, I only got about 1/6 of it. So I had 1/2 a rib and most of the potato fries and we have some ribs for tomorrow! Oh, very respectful of Covid-stuff here, and the outside eating area on Solano has a wooden barrier providing privacy from the cars and from other diners. The super nice owner brought out an umbrella and we had a private eating area. A great solution in a difficult time. read more

The shutdown has forced me to try some new restaurants other than my usual spots, and I just had a great breakfast for the first time at Duo. Smoked salmon eggs Benedict was luscious and fresh - and came with the best hash browns I've ever eaten, creamy and crispy. There is outdoor seating in the parklet in front, and the service was so thoughtful - he even brought out a bottle of hand sanitizer. Lets start off with the good! I was able to eat inside which I've missed due to Covid-19. The New York Steak which was nice and tender it came with red mashers and spinach. And a surprise addition of garlic toast. That garlic toast was bomb. Service was great. However, I do knock off a star because a fly landed on lemonade which luckily had covered with a napkin. I gently shooed but it came back a short time letter and aggressively circled my plate so much so that I had get the rest of my meal boxes up to go. Could be an indication of a cleanliness issue.
