This place is the BOMB! I've lived in Southern Maine for over 30 years, and while I have heard ALL about Dysarts, I haven't made the trek before now. It took a concert at the Maine Savings Amphitheater to get me to head north, and I am SO glad I did! We got a booth pretty quickly, and even though we were both recommended (several) times to go with the breakfast menu, we ended up ordering one hot open-face turkey sandwich and a pot roast dinner. The turkey sandwich was fantastic, plentiful, and smothered in gravy. I also requested extra cranberry sauce (always), which was perfect. The pot roast dinner started with the most excellent dinner rolls, fresh and warm, then moved to a giant portion of pot roast with gravy, real mashed potatoes, and a side of peas (also perfect). Always a consistent experience for us. Fast and friendly service. You feel like a local when you eat here. It's a clean family style setting - wooden chairs and tables. Great for larger and smaller groups. It was fun to see kids here before their prom/dance. It's really for everyone here. We ALWAYS order breakfast here - it's consistently great! I love their pancakes and their hash. Before we leave, we always get a few things to-go. The most recent trip we were lucky enough to snag their famous dinner rolls. So good for the holidays...or in our case...Sunday LOL We are a fan of their cookies as well. The pumpkin chip ones are our favorites. I give this review with the best intentions because for years now a trip to Dysart's has been a family favorite. Not sure if they were having an off-day today or they've been sliding downhill but today's experience was far from ok. Starting with the good. It was quite busy when we arrived around 7:30 pm and despite this the waitstaff were very friendly and were helping each other out. The server who brought our drinks even brought shorter "kids-size" straws for the children. Very thoughtful. Our primary server (Kallie B.) was covering several tables in our section and had signaled that she was coming to take our order when she accidentally spilled a drink at the next table. She was apologetic to that that group and moved quickly to clean it up but knew that we had been waiting a long while to order, so asked another server to come and take our order. Again, thoughtful. The food was simply not good today. We were a group of 6 adults and 2 children. Most had fries with our meals. They were all very undercooked - as if they were rushed. The bacon on my wife's club sandwich was undercooked. Several of us left large portions of our meals barely touched because they just didn't taste good. I had ordered steak tips. I tried to eat the first two and were so chewy that I had to put them in my napkin. I left the rest on my plate. This leads to an important recommendation. While the staff's teamwork and friendliness was great, the servers would benefit from some training in attention to signs that customers are having issues with their meal. While our server did ask at one point how everything was, she did so hastily and said, "ok? Good." without waiting for an actual response. She didn't seem to notice that I hadn't eaten my $21 steak tips meal - or if she had noticed, didn't bother to ask about it. It felt insincere. Likewise, a lack of inquiry for the barely touched french fries and portions of several meals left on plates. In a word, today was disappointing. I hope they'll do better. read more

Great restaurant nestled in a big truck stop. There is a separate place for truckers to sit and eat as well as plenty of room for families to separate and spread out. Lots of seating and quiet areas if you ask to be sat in your own area. Hostess was very friendly and sat me in a great spot. Waitress was friendly and helped me navigate the menu. She was very knowledgeable of the menu and specials. The food was great. Cooked as requested and the omelette was filled with a good amount of filling without being over filled. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Some places over cook the eggs and these were not!! The tables have salt & pepper shakers. They also have jellies, butter, ketchup, syrup and creamers. I like this feature so you're not always waiting to catch the waitress if you need one of those items. This is a great hidden gem in a truck stop. You should give a try if you're in the area!! I definitely recommend stopping in to Dysart's if you find yourself in the Bangor area. They have an abundance of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The dining room is huge and great for kids as there are plenty of private areas. The environment gives a small town diner feel which is very cool. I have to rate it on the premise that they don't try to be anything other than what they are - a well respected and worthwhile truckstop diner! We stop in at Dysart's every year on the tail end of our preseason tournament in Bangor. I chose to go with the breakfast for dinner option this year and got the corned beef hash (shame on me for not taking a picture). The food was good, for sure, but nothing outstanding! I will give props to the staff - they handle a group of 20 high school aged boys on an annual basis with ease! There's a reason why the locals eat here. It's because of the food! There's not much else around here and the food is fantastic! Truckers have priority seating and that is something that I rarely see anymore, it's a shame because truckers have even more time constraints now due to the electronic gps monitoring system that forces them to drive when tired. And makes them sit when rested! Rant over. The fish chowder was delicious and every entree we ate was amazing! 7 of us were there for two days and it was too short to try to eat everything on the menu, but we tried! Now for the desserts! If you're in a hurry, just get a whole pie and take it with you. It won't last long enough to get stale and pie is a breakfast staple! It was a great spot to spend the night in our camper on a trip from southern Maine to northern Maine. We pulled in and found a spot to park for the night. They have electric hookups but we didn't use them. There is a small fee for the hookups. We went in and had dinner, their famous chicken pot pie was as good as they say it is. I got mashed potato with it and it was good, too. They offered gravy on the potato but I didn't get it. Sleeping was a little noisy with the trucks going in and out all night, but that was expected. The next morning we went in for breakfast before we hit the road to continue the trek north. The pancakes were gummy but the eggs and bacon were perfect. My husband fully enjoyed his omelette and molasses bread toast. We make this trip at least once a year and always stop here. They have a great store as well and full service gas pumps. I highly recommend! And for those who don't know, this is the truck stop that inspired Stephen King to write Maximum Overdrive. Three words will sum up nirvana, chicken pot pie. OMG, if there was ever a perfect meal on a rainy night, this is it, and Dysart's is where to get it. Flaky crust, good ratio of veg to chicken and gravy, right size for digging in and not walking out feeling like you ate too much. The rolls, outstanding pillows. The potatoes-chunky yet creamy. I love that it's a truck stop selling fresh baked goods and tastes like a home cook made food with love. Service is friendly and helpful. I was really thinking about 4-stars for Dysart's, but a couple of things swayed me towards changing it to 5: After seeing it mentioned on Yelp and a few other places (but really, are there any other sites which we should even be reading??), I knew this was a must-see. My friend was stuck at the office so I headed over there for take-out (nice friend that I am) not really knowing what to expect. First of all, the place is HUGE. Right there you know you will have a lot of good people watching! I had read about the Whoopie Pies, so I knew that would be one thing I needed to order, and also ordered two sandwiches ( a turkey club and a turkey BLT) so that we could share each one. Shelby was at the desk for take-out ordering and paying all checks for those dining in (I think) and she was very nice and told me that Dysart's had just been voted best truck stop in the US by Food & Wine Magazine; it is always busy in there, but she mentioned it has been even more so since the film crew had been there the week before. She warned me that the kitchen was busy and it could take about 15 mins (every single table in the two massive seating rooms were full), so I walked into the rest of the building where there were restrooms (pretty clean, what a relief), a counter for the truck drivers to purchase their gas (and a sign with a restaurant deal for all purchases over 75 gallons; this made me think about how much fuel trucks hold??), a convenience store with grab-n-go food (pizza, chicken fingers, etc) and a room with showers. For whatever weird reason, I wondered what they are like??? I checked back with Shelby and the food was ready quicker than expected, so off I went to my friend's office. The sandwiches were good, I passed on the sides (one with each sandwich), but my friend ate all of the cole slaw and said it was good. The only disappointment was the whoopie pie: far too much cake which was dry, and not enough filling. That is a bad ratio for sure (not to mention the dry cake). This is a must stop! We were on a coastal Maine road trip and had gone to Orono to catch a Black Bear Hockey game. We stopped at Dysart's for brunch on our way back to the coast. Stopped in after the annual Witches Walk. Our waiter was awesome - even though a couple people in my party couldn't be bothered to answer his questions because they were so wrapped up in their phones, he remained pleasant. Our food took a little while to come out but it was cooked to order so that's absolutely understandable. We opted for breakfast even thought it was late afternoon. My steak omelet was loaded and filling. The biscuit tall and delicious. My granddaugher ordered scrambled eggs and bacon - she got soooo much bacon. What has happened to customer service?? This place is horrible. My husband ordered bisquits and gravy, which had no flavor and was luke warm. I ordered scramble eggs with cheese. They came out with just a slice of cheese on top, not even melted. The table didn't have a salt shaker or Tabasco on it. The waitress never came to check on us or see how the food was. This is a Maine institution and it went viral a few years ago for its "buttery flaky crust" commercial (also spoiled on snl). The chicken pot pie is fantastic, with the famous buttery flaky crust, though it is only on the top. It was a bit odd to see just white meat in the pie, as I'm used to a mixture of white and dark. The same crust is used in their fruit pies and also very good. My go to dessert is the strawberry shortcake with homemade biscuit and whipped cream. The club sandwich with turkey is also great, and includes homemade bread. We came when the World Cup 2019 final was on and they happily obliged when we asked the television station to be changed to the sports channel. Service is very nice, quick, and friendly. read more

When I mentioned to a friend that I was visiting the diner that inspired Stephen King's "Trucks" and the movie MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, he responded by saying he looked the place up and it seemed "cursed." The waitress I had did an excellent job. I tried the corned beef hash platter with home fries, eggs and molasses toast. I ordered corned beef hash only because the menu says the make their own. What I got looked suspiciously like grilled canned corned beef hash. I was disappointed. It tasted okay but was not the fresh corned beef hash I was expecting. The eggs were fine. The home fries was a measly portion of not fresh potatoes chunks with most pieces having bad parts that were not trimmed off. The tasted dried out and the flavor was odd. I will never get the home fries here if I ever come back. The bread was "homemade" but tasted unremarkable. Overall five star service. Two star food.expensive breakfast for the quality and location. 20 dollars after tipping 20 percent.
