Hands down, this restaurant went above and beyond. My Mom and her significant other of over 20 years decided to get married on very short notice (about 1 month). They wanted just something small with family and a few friends. After one family member recommended The Grand Hotel, I found they had a restaurant attached- Hemingways. I have never been to this hotel or the restaurant so I was unsure if they could accommodate a large group. Right from the first phone call, they were on board! Thankfully there was not another event that day and they truly seemed excited to have us book with them. Their events manager, Haley, reached out to me to plan our dinner. We ended up emailing which was so easy and convenient. She helped me nail down a menu and all the little details - down to the linen color. It was much more than I expected! My sister made a cake and I all but expected to have to do the cake in someone's hotel room but she told me they would be happy to put out a cake table and that she even had a cake stand we could use! The day of the event I was shocked to see the tables decorated so beautifully with sand, seashells, printed menus, and the cutest napkin rings. Our waitress Shannon was amazing and was on top of everything! Since the event was put together so quickly, I didn't have huge expectations. We had great expereinces watching the Eagles games here over tge winter. They set up a giant TV in the dining room and had some really well priced game day specials. The atmosphere, food and service have all proven to be great. Hemmingways has been around longer than I have and it is a wonderful Cape May institution. read more

This place has some incredible specials - the Phillies hot dog being one of them. It's a nice, large space and we appreciated the heavy air conditioning. Lots of guests were leaving/going to a wedding but other guests were dressed casual. One bartender was great and the other was a little shady. We dined here twice during our stay at the Grand Cape May hotel for our son's graduation from Coast Guard basic training. The staff were welcoming and congratulatory. The food was amazing as were the drinks. Bill the manager even took the time to come over and congratulate my son and give him a card covering his dinner and desert. It really made him feel appreciated. The restaurant has a lovely and clean ambiance with views of the ocean. If you are in town for vacation or graduation as well. This was our first visit here for our Merry Christmas family lunch. I enjoyed my two Absolute pear vodka martinis with St. Germain, lemon and simple syrup for $16 each. I inquired with our server regarding her recommendation regarding the two burgers and the cheesesteak sandwich. She recommended the shaved rib eye cheesesteak with sauteed onions, American cheese, with a long hot pepper on the side served on an Italian roll with fries for $18. I don't recommend the cheesesteak because it was not moist and tasted very dry with no visible sauteed onions or American cheese. Overall our server served my family of seven very well. A vibrant hotel bar. The cocktails were great and the bar service was excellent. Table service for breakfast, lunch, dinner, not so wonderful. The food offerings were weakly executed in my opinion. There's a lot of potential here, but at least melt the cheese on the grilled cheese sliders. I saw multiples come out of the kitchen with unmelted cheese. Happy hour drink specials were great. We stopped in a couple of times during our long weekend in Cape May. We were staying nearby, and wanted something local since parking in downtown Cape May was a nightmare. Best happy hour ever. $3 drinks and delicious small bites. I ordered the trio of fries and cheese steak egg rolls. Everything was cooked perfectly. I liked the different seasonings on the fries, and I was delighted to see that the egg rolls were an order of three. If definitely get the egg rolls again. I got to taste my brother's calamari and sirloin. Both were good. I'd need a little more seasoning on the steak though. I'll look forward to coming here next time I'm in town. read more

Visited Jersey Shores before the season and while weather was on the fair side. Looked for venues that obviously were open, and considering it's March, indoors! We stayed at the Grand Hotel and luckily Hemminways was located right off the lobby. I am happy to say that there were ample choices for my selection. (For a while now I've noticed that my eyes are bigger than my stomach! So much looks so good, but I find it difficult to finish.) Ordered the shrimp scampi with risotto adorned with a Crab sauce. Holy moly, that was good! Just barely finished it and skipped dessert. Dinner rolls did accompany the entree. Parking is plentiful during the off season. Prices are quite reasonable. Server was attentive and very personable. If I was in the neighborhood again, I would go back. Cape May is a lovely town that has many fine places to eat. BTW the fish on the wall we were told was (when caught) in excess of 1000 Lbs. WOW! Nice family oriented place. read more

We were down in Cape May for the weekend and decided on a quiet dinner at hemingways our first night in town. We love the balance of hotel bar meets casual and slightly sophisticated restaurant. As always, our meal was great, and so was the service. We were shocked to learn it was our waiters first night as he was fantastic! Extremely personable on top of drink refills, perfectly paced in taking our order, got all details correct, and checked in regularly to make sure that we didn't need anything. I enjoyed the crab cake sandwich with the parm fries as well as a cup of clam chowder. The fresh bread that they provided with a fruited butter was delicious along with the seasonal veggies that accompanied dinner. Will be back during one of our upcoming visits for sure! read more

Checked this place out during my stay recently at the Grand Hotel. Their margaritas are great! So are their nachos. During football season it is clear that there are plenty of Eagles fans who frequent the bar (not sure if they are staying in or residents in the area), so it's hard to get a seat in the bar area. Food is good but service is extremely slow. We came here 2 nights while staying at the hotel. I had the salmon dish which was topped with a pineapple mango salsa and served with veggies and jasmine rice. My husband had the country burger both nights and enjoyed it. The one night we had the burrata fig appetizer which was very good. Had fresh berries in it which made it very refreshing. We also had the fried green tomatoes which were just ok. The servers were nice, but just wished the waiter the one night would have said something about how they are backed up in the kitchen or short staffed making the long wait for our food more understandable. read more

Prime Rib night is fantastic. The bar also thumps up! Had breakfast that was fantastic and staff was wonderful.

After the 10 minute wait to speak to the waitress we ordered coffee and breakfast. Another 5 minutes and we had to ask again for coffee. 20 minutes later our food came and it was wrong. The hostess came over and apologized. She offered to remake all food not just what was incorrect and bring us water. We said don't waste it but can we get more coffee. When the rest of the food came out about 10 minutes later the waitress finally poured our coffee then said oh is it hot? The water never came and they adjusted our bill. They charged us more. Almost 2 hours for breakfast and they did nothing to make it right. Last time we eat here - we've given it multiple tries and it always terrible. read more

The only thing that was nice about our experience was it was nice looking inside. We were seated right away since we had reservations. My husband and I have infant twins and were given a free night without them while on vacation. We waited an hour for our food and it was not that busy. I ordered a steak, mashed potatoes and veggies. Terrible meal. My steak was well done and I ordered medium well and it was so tough. My mashed potatoes were falling apart and cold. My veggies were raw. Didn't send food back because I wasn't gonna wait another hour for food again. So disappointed to leave hungry and my husband and I were looking forward to a nice night out. Won't be back! read more

They are awful!! We had reservations for 6:30 on a Saturday night and the hostess told us to wait 10 minutes. After 20 minutes we went back in to check only to find out the kitchen was backed up and the manager was in the back and could not come out to talk to us. The hostess said it could be an hour or two, she had no idea. She made us pay for parking when we got there by telling us 10 minutes then never came to tell us how long the wait would be. A hotel restaurant with better food than a nearby "restaurant." The Cape May IPA Fish & Chips(beer-battered cod with fries, pea fritter and tartar sauce, $23) was sizzling hot from the fryer with a generous amount of fries. 8/10 Maryland Crab Cakes(seared a la plancha, hash brown potato, roasted asparagus and tartar sauce, $38) 8/10 Seared Local Sea Scallops(absinthe butter, celery root puree, fresh peas and basil, $33) tasted fantastic but would have appreciated larger scallops for the portion 5/10 Grilled 16 oz. Ribeye(tamarind red wine butter, yukon mash and broccolini, $39) was cooked the way it was requested. Mash and broccolini complimented the steak very well. 9/10 Baked Lobster Mac n' Cheese(sherry cream, orecchiette, tarragon and toasted bread crumbs, $23) was a farewell to lobster arms with a good amount of meat, but the oils also caused this dish to feel heavy. 6/10 New England Clam Chowder(potatoes, clams, cream & puffy pastry, $12) 5/10 Shrimp Bucatini(brown butter, lemon, parsley, capers, roasted cauliflower and pecorino, $36) had a good amount of shrimp but was drenched in oil, making the pasta at the bottom quite heavy. 6/10 Fried Calamari Fritto Misto(fried peppers, lemon, herbs and marinara, $17) arrived hot and crunchy with plenty of marinara, a touch of lemon gave the dish a refreshing flavor. 9/10 Strawberry Shortcake was on the sweet side and overpowered any strawberry flavors. 5/10 While the overall quality of food was good, the service was perplexing. Basic fried run of the mill beach fare. Nothing really stood out but the high prices for the quality and portion sizes. Lobster Mac and cheese was $18 and didn't have much lobster and was overloaded with Old Bay seasoning. Perhaps the atmosphere is nice if you dine there but skip the takeout. read more

This was my least favorite restaurant we tried in Cape May. The service was mediocre, the food was BAD and overpriced. I had a Cobb salad that was literally just a bag or lettuce, a pile of bacon, onions and an egg. The dressing was actually the worst I've ever had (very clear it was from a store bought tube) and it was $15. My daughter ordered the pasta with marinara, very clearly a jar sauce, and it was $10 (this was all she got, no drink or dessert or anything else). Everyone else I dined with didn't enjoy their food either. I will say that the poolside food was better; I loved their cheesesteak egg rolls but for some reason they said they cannot serve those at the restaurant. read more

Food was a disaster. I ordered Linguine and clams in white sauce. it came out with Fettuccine egg noodles. No garlic, no oil no clams in sauce other then the 5 clams on top. it only was a butter sauce. Daughter had Chicken cutlet parmigiana,it was a huge chicken breast with melted cheese. This is our second time staying at the Grand Hotel and so we have eaten at Hemingway's many times. While Devon is a great bartender and is quick with conversation, this place is sub-par on the food front. First, they love to serve these "chips" rather than fries with many sandwiches. They are terrible. They also give you a garlic type dip but it has no flavor and seems to serve no purpose. I have had a variety of items on their menu since you get a resort credit with your stay. The only food we ordered all week that was decent was the calamari which is not your traditional fried variety. It comes in a fra Diavlo sauce they is really good! Now the rest of what they serve is not good at all. Best to head in town and find something decent. read more

We arrived at the reservation time, but they made us wait 20 minutes outside in the cold with high winds. We should have left, but made the mistake of staying. All the food tasted and looked awful. The sauce for the seafood scampi was gray, and tasted as it looked. The ribeye was thin and didn't taste like any steak I've ever ordered. The crab cake sandwich had no sauce and you couldn't taste the crab. The tuna sandwich came out as just the yellowfin tuna steak. They took it back and returned the same cold tuna steak on a bun 2 minutes later. Again, not much flavor. Please avoid making the same mistake we did. read more

Don't understand all the negative reviews and all the 3- and 4-star ratings above glowing text. We had apps, entrees, and desserts and everything was great. Chocolate mousse was outstanding and the crème brûlée was very good. Server was over-worked, that's the only complaint I can think of. Overall the food and service was a great value. read more
