My husband and I were driving around trying to figure out what to eat when we came across this place. I got the chicken katsu curry with brown rice and a salad. We got a kids meal chicken yakitori for our daughter and my husband got a turkey club sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised when the kids meal came out and looked like it could feed a grown up. The chicken yakitori was tender and tasty. My chicken katsu was good. Usually in diners u order something that's fried and u can still taste the oil on the item. That wasn't the case here. I could taste the chicken and the curry sauce on top was pretty good. My husband's sandwich looked a lil sad, but then again it could be because he's a picky eater and asked for most of the topping to come off. Visited this place for lunch with some colleagues from the mainland and they weren't really impressed at first. The initial comment was about the prices, some in our group thought that they were a bit steep but I kept my mouth shut and let the food do the talking. When our meals were served, some of the comments were "wow" with eyes wide open. Everyone eventually realized that the prices are comparable to what they serve in terms of taste, quality, and size of serving. It is funny how some were already commenting on what they should have ordered or what they will be ordering the next time around and they haven't even started on their own meals...lol. We visit Honolulu often and we have learned that there are tourist spots to hang out and eat and there are the usual "name-brand" areas to get some grub. But, the best indication of where to get great meals for decent prices are where the Locals go and chill out. There were plenty of locals here and we had great company. Since it could get busy here, service could be slow at times which is what we had when we visited. We weren't even offered seconds on our drinks. The facade was also a bit deceiving. Decided to try the New Eagle Cafe since there is a new owner. Previous meals there were just so-so. The restaurant's appearance is updated and serving size is very generous, but the waitress was terrible. After dropping off our meals she was MIA. We were planning to check out desserts since the food (roast turkey plate and Hawaiian-style beef stew) were pretty tasty, but after waiting at least 20 minutes for the waitress to show, we opted for doggie bags instead. Sad thing is that we had to ask another waitress for the bags because ours was still nowhere to be found! Our waitress actually brought the to-go containers to the table but not the bill. How lo-lo is that?! It was frustrating because another waitress nearby did an excellent job of taking care of her customers (refilling drinks and asking if they dessert). Folks that came in after us were being asked about dessert or getting their checks and leaving before us! The last straw was the cashier. When we got to the register she had a customer with a take-out order. Unfortunately she didn't know which keys to punch in so she had to ask another girl (maybe the hostess) for help. She was really sassy about it! Don't know how they stand working with her (Ms. Fake Eyelashes). Meanwhile the line at the register was backing up. It got really messed up when the other girl/hostess tried to help and started taking payments from people in the line. The cashier got even more confused and couldn't figure out who was next!! As they say, "It was a hot mess!" After leaving the restaurant and realizing that was one of the most terrible dining experiences ever, called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager. Was put on hold and I swear Ms. Fake Eyelashes came on the phone. When asked if she was the manager she admitted that she wasn't. She advised that "Tae" the owner would be in around 2pm. Called back at 2:30pm and was advised that "Tae" would be in after 4pm. Since I never could get a hold of "Tae" figured that's probably why they're so screwed up. Hmmmm, maybe there should be a manager on each shift to ensure wait staff and the cashier know what the heck is going on! The one star is for the renovation and food. read more

I've been here quit a few times over the course of 3 years. I must say that the quality of the food and cleanliness of the restaurant has only gotten better. The new owner has really stepped up and obviously cares more about the restaurant than the previous owners have. 4 stars for the food but what really bumped it up to 5 is the recent service we received from Mark. No other server here has ever shown as much hospitality and attentiveness than he has and for that, my rating is a 5/5. We will definitely be coming back and request him. Extremely terrible service with no common sense! Order a medium rare prime rib soon later the waitress brought out a over cook prime rib which she even noticed and inform us the kitchen over cook it. Wow! Why did u even brought it out if you know is it not what we ordered. Common sense! She's never even bother to swing by or asked if we needed anythings else. So we returned here after someone told us the place was under new management. The decor has changed, new booths, fixtures etc, food is basically still the same - which is good! Our issue was always the service, never the food - which is tasty and consistent. Since returning here mid 2014, we've had breakfast several times, and been very satisfied each and every time. Staff is friendly, service is prompt, and I haven't had a single issue at all since we've returned. So we're super happy to update our rating to 5 stars! Was enjoying my sandwich when the employee is cleaning off the dishes on the table next to me and splashes liquid containing pieces of food on to my back ,hair and clothes. Ordered the hamburger steak WELL DONE. Half way through, I cut the patty with the knife, and a dark colored liquid invaded my brown gravy...the meat was RED, not pink or even "pinkish". Their menu clearly states that consuming undercooked meats could expose certain persons to food borne illness. I returned my plate to the waitress and rather than offering me the choice of having another hamburger steak (cooked, this time), ordering something else, or having the item taken off the bill, she assumed that I wanted another hamburger steak; I had lost my appetite by then. Who said the waitresses were good? I just had a bad one... I wanted the steamed opakapaka (I did not say steamed) but got the "catch of the day," which just happened to be grilled opakapaka. I told her it was fine, but I had wanted it steamed. Then she tells me, "That's why I asked you if you wanted the complete meal - you said, yes. That's why you got the 'catch of the day.' If you had wanted it steamed, you should have said so." First of wall, since when does COMPLETE MEAL mean CATCH OF THE DAY? (Complete Meal means soup or salad, drink, and dessert, which I did order.) Second, she never told us what the "catch of the day" was, so how was I to know there would be a potential screwup? Instead of apologizing, she blames the customer - and I had already told her up front that I would eat it. She got the customary 15% tip, but a small price to pay for the sake of courtesy, since I'm never going back! If you decide to check it out, don't order the fish! I've always love cafes especially the eagle cafe for at least 10 years but unfortunately either new management has changed the entire aspect of loving the cafe experience. The menu is now very limited at breakfast time unlike before when it was "The New Eagle Cafe" employees seem very unhappy about there job. To the point they do not care about customers sitting in obvious hearing ranges of waitresses arguing about schedules and who can leave early which went on for at least 30 mins. The lack of motivation and lack of genuine customer service with limited menu choices causes my favorite island cafe to not be a choice for myself and my family. The current management needs to change this local beautiful jewel cafe into the "new eagle cafe" again because everything has changed food taste is bland and boring there is no excitement like before. The issues of scheduling should be discussed behind closed doors not in front of the whole restaurant. Also I noticed one waitress actually put her shoe on the table to tie it regardless if customers eat there or not the standards of being professional along with proper customer service skills are failing at this location. read more

Don't come an two hoursand a half before closing, they rush to you to order, eat and pay.. As me and my mother was eating dinner they started cleaning up like I mean major clean up put the chairs up on the table, mop,sweep and heck even count there cash drawer when there still was like 5 more families eating and ordering. A couple walked in and they didn't wanna sit them because they were already cleaning up and counting the drawer.. The food is on point just there service sucks! First of all our Waitress was not friendly at all. She did not greet us or offer drinks or anything until I asked her for drinks. We ordered sashimi, fried mandoo, teriyaki rib eye, pork chops, and a saimin. The only 2 things that seemed reasonably priced and tasted good were the two appetizers we ordered. My rib eye was suppose to be medium but came out well done and was very chewy and tough. My family and I then ordered dessert and asked for our bill. We used our card to pay for our food which came out to 70 bucks and we did not leave any tip On the card because I always leave cash for Tips. She sees that we didnt leave her any tip on our reciept and she very rudely ask if we're done and she was very mad thinking we weren't going to tip her. She came back after running our card and opens up the check book and faces it towards me lifting up the bill and showing me we didn't tip her. I pulled out 7 bucks and threw it on the table and she's lucky I even have her 10 percent because she deserved nothing with that attitude and horrible service. I gave this place two stars just because maybe I had a very rare bad experience and maybe not everyone there is bad but this was just my experience there. I am hoping the situation encountered today is resolved so that I can remove this review. I work in the building so my colleagues and I patron this place often enough. Today I encountered the RUDEST cashier. In all the time I have been here, I have never been treated so terribly. Unbelievable. It started with my take-out order over the phone. The young woman made me feel like I was such a bother. She clearly sounded annoyed... but all I ordered was a sandwich. (Manager of NEC, I would, however, also re-think the cash-only policy when ordering a mini sandwich. That rule seems unnecessary.) At the end of the call, the woman just hung up... no thank you, no goodbye. Then when I arrived there, she was even more rude than over the phone. My blood was boiling because of her poor attitude. She never made eye contact, nor did she even acknowledge the presence of anyone entering (there were folks entering ahead of me). I stood there, waiting and a server in the maroon uniform actually approached me. From the side, the cashier shouted out the amount due. Her tone, her entire demeanor, and the sighing really makes one feel unwelcome and disrespected!! I'm still in shock by such blatantly horrible behavior. While the server just walked away from me as I was signing my tab, at least she was slightly nice during our encounter. To the manager and owner of this business, I would strongly recommend that you re-evaluate this cashier. She does not belong in customer service of any kind. And yes, perhaps she was having a bad day, but it does not warrant such obvious disrespect. I rushed out of there very upset and disappointed. Her attitude is really, really awful. read more

Went with a group tonight, when we entered the hostess, did not smile, she took us to our table and gave us r menu and brought out waters for all of us, it took 30 minutes for r waitress to take r orders and she too did not smile or greet us. Being an out-of-state visitor, I ate here with a group once about years ago and enjoyed the experience then. Since visiting town again, I've recently come to eat here twice, for dinner and breakfast, and was pleased to see the place remodeled and upgraded with booth seating and more pleasant dining environment. The food wide selection is still there, including the daily specials. I've tried the thin seafood stew and don't recommend it. I had a taste of the fried oysters, rich and tasty oxtail stew and Japanese style butterfish breakfast and would definitely recommend those choices. This place is one of rare places with fried beef liver smothered with onion; a good choice if you like fried liver. We already have plans to return on Monday for the oxtail stew, the only day the entree is on the special menu and not offered on the regular menu. The prime rib sure looks good too. The servers are friendly and accommodating. New Eagle Cafe is one my favorite places to eat while in HNL. read more

Breakfasts are good but the dinners are the main draw. I had the Kal Bi. The ribs were done right. Not overcooked and rubbery. The portions were quite generous. For $13-$14 not too bad!. My wife's opakapaka was good also. Tues., or Thurs., nights the cafe also serves up free freshly made biscuits. They're very good. Only problem was ..... we had to ask for waitress for them. Kinda embarrassing but she was nice about it. Their menu is quite extensive plus every night they have specials. Here is a sampling of the Thurs., night specials- braised short ribs w/ spanish sauce, roast chicken w/gravy & stuffing, stuffed cabbage, old fashioned beef stew, beef teriyaki and seafood stew. The braised short ribs are heavily recommended. can't wait to try. We've gone to Eagle's about 5x now and to be honest we haven't even made a dent in their menu. But most of the dishes we had were good tasting, nice portions and reasonably priced. I know what your going to say......"just like zippy's." Yes and No! New Eagle Cafe is more like getting good home cooked food. Where-as when you go to zippy's it's still comfort food but done in a more commercial, exact, massed produced kind of way. Case in point...just go to any Zippy's in the state of Hawaii. No matter where you go you'll get the same taste and probably the same portion too, all at the same price! Their chili frank is exactly the same whether in Waiana'e or Hawaii Kai! Do they have one in Waiana'e? Anyway! So far New Eagle Cafe fits my bill, They make a a conscious effort to provide the customer with a real wholesome dining experience. Even though it doesn't take a lot to make me happy...when I dine out. I still like to have an enjoyable experience. After all, I'm not made of money. If I get a lousy experience...either in service or food....there is a strong chance I won't be back or my recommendation will be a less than flattering one. Why should we!!!!!! Pretty much a zippys. Ordinary food, older waitresses, slow service... The signature was you could get a complete meal (drink, salad/soup, bread roll, dinner and desert) now it's all seperate, and it's a rip off. The only signature thing is now not so signature. Just discovered this place! The food was good (old fashioned good -- very satisfying). Our server was very friendly (and good) and made us feel at home immediately. So many much fancier places could really take a lesson from this place in regard to sincere hospitality. Oh, and the lighting is very nice; totally adequate but very warm and not too bright. It really makes a difference as their lighting makes you feel relaxed and makes the dining experience so much nicer. read more
