SolarEdge app showing consumption of 0.72kW, with 0.22kW coming from the panels, 0.10kW from the grid and 0.40kW from the battery.
    Kenneth R.

We phoned Jason of Earthwise Energy on the indirect recommendation of a neighbor. Earthwise installed a 3.33kW system for us that included a 9.31 kWh battery for "resilience" in case of a PGE public safety power shutoff. We're glad that we phoned Earthwise and are happy with the work that Earthwise did for us. After our initial phone call, we received a 16-page prospectus from Eathwise that outlined the scope of the work and listed a price. Because of the recommendation that we received, we ok'ed the job without getting competitive bids. This was not the most conservative approach, to put it mildly. If you are thinking about solar for your house, I recommend that you speak with several contractors and get a few bids to see how prices fall. Jason told us that his prices are in the "middle of the pack" and that he does very high quality work. The work seems to be of high quality indeed, but I have no independent way to know whether or not we overpaid. The Earthwise prospectus was based on a "survey" of our house made with google maps and a detailed review of a year's worth of our PGE bills. Once we had a Zoom meeting with Jason and agreed that the work would be done, a technician came to look carefully at our roof and electrical panels. Following the technician's visit, Earthwise prepared a permit application that was submitted to our County. The most difficult part of the process was getting the County to approve our application -- this literally took months. Here is one place where Earthwise let us down to some extent: we had to keep emailing the County because Earthwise was too busy to do it for us. Our goal was to produce about as much electricity as we use, measured over the course of a year. Now that our system is online, we have a metering system with PGE that will bill us for our net usage (consumption minus production) once each year. My understanding is that if our net usage is zero, we pay pretty much nothing. If our net usage is positive, we pay for the difference between what we used and what we produced. If our net usage is negative (i.e., if we over-produce), PGE pays us pennies on the dollar for our contribution to the grid. This explains the motivation for our goal. If you have a lot of spare land and think that you can make money by installing a solar farm on your property, think again. At least at the moment, PGE doesn't want us to become bulk producers. A problem with this setup, from some points of view, is that PGE's big grid has been paid for by electric users in proportion to the amount of electricity that they buy. If you're a solar customer and are paying $0 while using the grid, you're getting something valuable for free. This is the same kind of argument that is leveled against owners of electric vehicles: they're using the roads like gasoline cars but aren't paying for the maintenance of the roads through gasoline taxes. So far, solar customers haven't been hit with new grid charges; moreover, proposals to institute charges have been written so as to exempt existing solar customers. However, it you're considering solar and haven't signed any contracts, you might want to see if the Legislature or Public Utilities Commission are scheming to dig into your pockets. To get back to the main story, we contacted Earthwise at the beginning of last summer (2020) with the intention of bringing our system online in time for California's fire season and the expected PGE shutoffs. The permit process much longer than we imagined. We didn't get our system installed until Election Day in November, and the final inspection from the County took place only in early December. It was a couple of days after the inspection that we were able to start PGE net electric metering and become fully vaccinated against public safety power shutoffs. In short, the process took about five months. If you would like to install a solar system at your place, leave lots of extra time for the unexpected. Seven months have passed since Election Day. The solar system (as well as the Federal Government) is working mostly as intended, despite a few strange glitches resulting from software updates to our monitoring system, which is provided by SolarEdge. Solar Edge, by the way, is the provider of the key components other than the battery and panels (which are by LG); these components include the "critical load center," the inverter and the optimizer. Conclusion: I definitely recommend Earthwise Energy but reiterate the suggestion that you do some homework before signing a contract. It would make sense to speak with some recent Earthwise customers and to visit their installations; this is in addition to the competitive bidding that I suggested before.

When we raised concerns, I believe the salesperson my partner dealt with wanted to make things right, but sales leadership stepped in, dismissed our concerns as unfounded, and offered nothing. Those concerns were (and still are): 1) Sketchy contract execution. NPP offers a 5-year prepaid lease in partnership with Balto Energy. It lets homeowners offset installation costs because the leasing company collects a 30% federal tax credit (no longer available to homeowners) and, in NPP's words, "monetizes that tax credit over 5 years." The contract was executed by sending the DocuSign to just one partner, with all owners lumped onto a single signature line -- one person signing on behalf of the other. For a married couple in California, that's legally questionable under community property law, given a) the encumbrances placed on jointly owned property, and b) no power of attorney authorizing one spouse to sign for the other. I never saw the agreement until installation was underway. 2) Misleading claims. My partner was told, verbally and in writing, that we'd "own the system outright" at the end of the 5-year term. In truth, the contract contains only vague language about a fair-market-value buyout, with no detail on how to initiate it or who to contact at end of lease. We've had zero contact with Balto through this entire process -- only NPP -- yet NPP's sales director told us they have no role in the lease agreement once it's signed. In other words, they don't stand behind the product they sell. Don't be like us -- do your diligence (especially if you're over 65 and new to solar leases), verify every claim against the actual contract language, and make sure all owners review and sign every agreement.

The original solar systems were installed years ago by SolarCraft and Ambrose. When it came time to add a backup battery in Napa, we chose SonoMarin first. That project went so smoothly that we later asked them to install a battery on our older, more complex Marin system as well. Despite the added complexity, they handled both installations efficiently and got everything up and running without drama. Ayelet in the office deserves special mention. She provides near-instant responses to texts and emails, keeps everything moving, and somehow manages to coordinate all the moving parts with ease. If you've ever dealt with solar projects, you know how valuable that is. She had seemingly infinite patience for my never-ending questions, handling them with professionalism and speed. She also helped me apply for relevant rebates and helped interface with the nightmare that is PG&E, making it all look easy. The whole team jumped through hoops to get the system in before the tax break expired. SonoMarin is a small company, localled owned and run by the same people I originally worked with at SolarCraft on our first install years ago, which really shows in the level of care and accountability. Avner and Nick have built a great company. Pricing was competitive--frankly, all three bids we received were in the same range--but the execution and communication set them apart. I would recommend SonoMarin without hesitation.

My experience with this company is nothing short of exceptional from start to finish. What initially drew me to them was the fact I met the owner, Ari, at a cafe and he was genuinely interested in my upcoming roofing project (especially with what I believed would be a challenging project). I was experiencing problems finding (and feeling confident with) a roofer who could handle the installation of a specific synthetic roofing material I wanted to use. It looks like slate but performs much better than slate and is made by Brava. Few other roofers even wanted to speak with me about it because it was out of their (common asphalt shingle) wheelhouse. After speaking with Ari and learning about his (and his family's) expertise in the roofing industry, I knew I had found the right person for the job. From the very beginning, Ari was professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. He took the time to discuss the installation, material and timing with me, and he (and the Brava representatives) answered all of my questions thoroughly. What began as one roofing job, eventually turned into numerous jobs. Now that several different types of roofing jobs (from sloped to flat, from composite slate to synthetic coating, from galvanized to copper flashing) have been completed for me by Piscatelli Roofing, I can confidently say they do extremely good work that they can confidently stand behind. And (as a side comment) the advanced synthetic roofing material by Brava looks just like slate, but is much better. I am so pleased with the overall results, I would highly recommend Piscatelli to anyone who is in need of any roofing services whatsoever. I am grateful that I met Ari (and his family). His expertise, professionalism, and commitment to customer satisfaction are truly unparalleled.

I spoke with many contractors, and almost all of them sent salespeople who gave generic answers or tried to push cookie-cutter solutions that clearly didn't fit my setup. Carlos was completely different. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he wasn't a salesperson -- he's an engineer, and it shows. He took the time to deeply understand my system, reviewed actual spec sheets on the spot, and immediately identified issues that other contractors completely missed. Multiple companies told me Hyundai panels would work fine. Carlos checked the amperage limits, applied proper safety margin calculations, and clearly explained why those panels would not work with my EcoFlow system -- saving me from a costly mistake. He also walked me through: Proper panel selection within voltage and amperage limits Safe string configurations and series wiring How to maximize roof space while staying within code Permitting requirements I hadn't been told about before On top of that, Carlos identified critical code and safety requirements that no one else mentioned: Bollards required in the garage to protect battery units Correct battery placement to maintain required clearance from doors and entrances Heat detector requirements for battery installations in a garage These are all things that would have caused inspection failures later -- and Carlos caught them immediately. He spent well over an hour with me, climbed onto my roof to check for obstructions, inspected battery placement, reviewed wiring paths, and answered every question in detail without ever rushing me. What truly sealed the deal was how efficient and transparent the pricing process was. Carlos was able to turn around a detailed quote very quickly, and when I received it, I was honestly surprised -- it was a significant amount lower than every other quote I received, even though his evaluation was by far the most thorough. Given everything: His technical expertise The level of detail and care The ability to integrate with my existing system The fast turnaround And the much better pricing Choosing Sunlight Electri-Cal Solutions was a complete no-brainer. Carlos is knowledgeable, meticulous, honest, and genuinely passionate about doing things the right way. After meeting him, I completely understand why this company has such strong Yelp reviews. If you're in the Bay Area and need electrical or solar work done the right way, especially for a non-standard or custom system, I highly recommend Carlos and the team at Sunlight Electri-Cal Solutions.

Just for context, I've talked to another solar company where clearly they were just about trying to close the deal and sell sell sell, which really turned me off - it felt like they just wanted our money as opposed to wanting to understand what we really needed. Juan's team really shined here by just showing up to be real experts who are thoughtful about what system you need, as opposed to trying to close a deal. Juan and his team were also really patient and flexible. Our new home's solar system had to be turned on before we could start any work, and that process took months due to Sunnova going bankrupt.
