Overall, I had a positive experience with East Star Building Supply and would likely purchase from them again. Pros: Very competitive pricing--probably one of the most cost-effective places for cabinets and flooring in the Bay Area. Complimentary cabinet design service. Large selection of products, including cabinets, flooring, tiles, countertops, vanities, and hardware. The flooring selection is excellent. I've been very happy with the quality, and East Star is still my favorite flooring supplier. Cons: The tile selection is a bit less appealing compared to the rest of the showroom. Cabinet parts are not labeled, which made assembly more time-consuming for my contractor. The standard particleboard cabinets are a good value, but I noticed slight warping on a few cabinet doors that made perfect alignment difficult. The upgraded cabinet panels performed noticeably better. Since there is no onsite measurement service, a few field conditions weren't fully captured during the design process, resulting in some installation conflicts (such as gas pipe clearance and an oven/fire door swing conflict). If your project has a more complicated layout, I'd recommend having your contractor& architect carefully verify all dimensions before ordering. The showroom is quite popular, so appointments and order processing can take some time. Planning ahead is a good idea if you're on a tight renovation schedule. For context, I also purchased cabinets from another local supplier that was only slightly more expensive and included complimentary design, onsite measurements, and installation options. In my experience, the service and standard cabinet quality were slightly better there. That said, East Star still offers outstanding value, especially if you're managing your own renovation. I'd happily buy flooring from them again, and I would also consider purchasing cabinets from them in the future. read more

Very disappointed with the after-sale service. When we opened the package to install this freestanding bathroom vanity, we discovered that the side panel was already damaged/chipped, as shown in the photo. We brought it back to the store, but they refused to exchange. The warehouse staff claimed that the installer had opened the package and checked when picking it up. However, the package was only opened enough to verify that the correct item was inside--it was never fully unpacked or inspected for damage. There was no reasonable way to see this damage without actually opening the entire package. I understand that damage can happen during shipping or handling, but the customer should not be left responsible for damage that was not reasonably possible to discover at pickup. I would strongly recommend that other customers carefully inspect the entire item before accepting or taking it home, and be aware of the store's after-sale services. To be fair, the sales staff were helpful and professional. My complaint is specifically about the after-sale service and the warehouse staff refusal to take responsibility for a damaged product. read more

Have to come here and downgrade my rating after the recent experience. I remodeled both the master bathroom and the guest bathroom, when I made the purchases, I made it for both and some items were not available during pick up. I was told that they would let me know once they have new inventory. This went on for 2 months and I got no calls. So I had to call them and found out that they did have incoming inventory but the sales person never made the call. Then when I went to pick up, the delivery department insisting an item was picked up while the order was circled from last time indicating it was not picked up. We had to go back, searched high and low with our contractors and confirmed that we never had the item. Then we went through the hassle of emailing and calling them to finally have their agreement to pick up the item. When I thought this is all done, the contractor discovered that a part was missing from the box and I had to call them again. Interestingly they don't seemed surprised. For more than the third time, I went to pick up that missing part and they had a standard form to sign. Probably means this happens a lot? So my advice is that pick up right away after you place the order, if they don't have the items available, cancel them immediately. Also, check every box at pick up to make sure what you have are good, but it can be hard if you don't know what to look for. So now to go over the whole journey and talk about the value of the shop, I'm not sure it's that top notch. Perhaps just focus on what you can buy immediately, pick up, check and leave will be the best value. If you can't get it right away there, leave and find somewhere else. read more

East Star in Fremont is always very busy on weekends, and for good reason. Prices are reasonable and big selection of premier brands for faucet/shower/bathroom (Hansgrohe, Toto, Grohe, etc). They also carry quality, "good-enough" budget options (for items like kitchen sink) and occasionally some very interesting wall tile designs. We got countertop slabs here - lots of selection, price was cheaper, and the main surface looked good. However, pattern continuity from main surface to the narrow side edge gets distorted with some batches, especially with patterns emphasizing stripes/veins. So pay attention to the side edge of their standard quartz slabs. We worked with Jaime, who is the best. We've probably been to East Star at least 20 times. Spacious parking lot, convenient location off 880, big bright showroom, and very reasonable prices. read more

We purchased the 2 sets of Hansgrohe shower systems for 2 bathrooms. No one has ever told us these connectors are METRIC standards but not IMPERIAL. The store only told us their system can be used anywhere but nothing about the connector. Our shower system has very narrow space and shopped Lowe's and Home Depot all around for any converter to fit in but any modification has to break the studs and the pipelines. We asked for returns but the store claimed to be NON REFUNDABLE not even never opened. As for remodeling, everyone knows you gotta see the real things whether it fits your house. The price is quite expensive for the whole system, more than 700 dollars per system, and it does not make any sense for such a bad policy and we would like to alert anyone who shipping around be extremely careful about this. East Star was recommended by a friend who used them for their new kitchen cabinets. The number one selling point, they told us, was the free lunch on Saturday. Our designer took us to her affiliated supply store and we were quoted 9k total for a new bathroom vanity, linen cabinet, and shower fixtures. We thought this was a bit steep so we took our designer to East Star and got a quote for 5k. While the shower fixtures were definitely lower tier, the cabinets/closet and sinks were the exact same brand/quality. In fact, East Star was able to provide far more customization of the vanities and cabinets in terms of size, placement, and accessories. Our designer showed Jamie the measurement for our bathroom and she quickly picked up a pen and paper and was able to sketch out our cabinet dimensions, generate a 3D model, and provide detailed quotes in a matter of minutes. She also brought our attention to a huge sale they were having on a mirror that suited our needs perfectly, and to this day that might be my favorite thing about our bathroom. If I was rating this place by free food (dim sum lunch and a nifty instant latte machine), efficiency, and price, I would give 5 stars. But with a 30-40% reduction on price, you can expect some hit or miss when it comes to the quality too. A few things that weren't so great 1) We ordered a shower drain and it came missing an essential part. Luckily, our contractor took it back to them and they replaced the missing part. 2) We ordered and paid for bathroom tiles months in advance and when our contractor went to pick them up, we were told there was an inventory error and they were unable to fill our order. It took a bit of back and forth to eventually get our refund AND we had to scramble to find an alternative tile so as not to push back our timeline. 3) The cabinets arrived with the hinges installed on the wrong side. Our contractor was able to remove and move them but of course the holes remained and now we have a less than cosmetically ideal product. If you're OK with a few bumps in the road to save a pretty penny, then East Star is the place for you. If you're not sure, swing by on a Saturday around noon and let the free lunch persuade you. read more

My experience has been that even though they have lower prices than other stores, they carry inferior products, have more faulty ones and have terrible policies when it comes to supporting their customers via refund / replacement. 1. Black Hansgrohe faucet peeled off in 2 months, showing stainless steel under. We never used any chemicals or cleaned it harshly. 2. Hansgrohe kitchen faucet leaked due to product fault. 3. We used to purchase lots of floor, shower door and toilet, etc. Overall, we do not like the store because they do not mark the price on most of the items. But when you try to confirm the price, you have to take line to wait for the sales. The sales have very cold face. Recently, we need 2 stair nozzles for repairing damage. My daughter visited the store and confirmed with the sales (Harry Lei) that they have the stair nozzles in stock. Then I took my contractor to go to pick up. The salesman (Harry Lei) told us ok to buy at the beginning. But after he knew that we only purchase 2 stair nozzles, he said his store manager said they can not sell the stair nozzles to us. I ask why, Harry said he did not know. I asked to talk with his manager, he said his manager is not in. I asked to talk with the manager on phone, he said I can not. Then I said I would wait for the manager in the store. After waiting for 20 minutes, I went to talk to Harry again. After he confirmed that we did purchased lots of stuffs in the store in the past, he sold the nozzles to us without calling his manager gain. We do not know the reason that he did not want to sell the 2 nozzles to us at the beginning. Maybe the business is too small for him or the store. He wasted us for more than 1 hour to wait and purchase the 2 nozzles although the nozzles are just on their desk. This store is not fare business store and have discrimination. They are not good at what they do. I wanted a 33" sink cabinet to accommodate a larger kitchen sink that they know I wanted. Yet they sold me a 30" sink cabinet and they "forgot" to tell me they they also carried the 33" cabinet. These people are just plain stupid. Transparent doors in place of what we have ordered. This is a one stop shop for all your home renovation needs! We recently remodeled our master bathroom and most of the material we used was purchased from East Star. We purchased floor tiles, mosaic tile for the shower floor, linear tile-in shower drain, Toto sinks, Toto washlet (toilet/bidet), LED mirrors, custom floating vanity, and quartz countertop for the vanity. We couldn't find a wall tile we liked from East Star so we headed over to KZ for those tiles. The reason I gave them four stars is because they didn't account for the sink drain pipes when they built our custom floating vanity. Our contractor had to cut an opening in the bottom two vanity drawers so that the pipes would fit. Now, we have a hole in the back of the bottom drawers that I'll eventually have to fix but it's not a huge deal. It would be a nice little DIY project. We worked closely with sales rep, Joyce Liu. She was very helpful without being pushy; something we appreciated very much. They offer quality material at an unbeatable price. We plan to come back for future renovations. read more

They have high quality items with modern selection that isn't too overwhelming. Their tile is from Italy and Spain. They can make customized vanities and you can match it with an awesome looking top. Cabinets come in various colors and finishes. They have these vanity tops where the sink and counter are all one piece.. We are opting for the customized vanities because the pre-made ones weren't exactly what we wanted. Service is great! A showroom specialist tends to walk with you... everywhere. Don't be shy to ask them to give you a bit of time. But we found it was necessary to ask a whole bunch of questions. This place is awesome and I highly recommend my sales associate, Simon Cai, when you're there! I recently remodeled my house and purchased bathroom vanities, bathroom tiles, vinyl flooring, shower accessories, kitchen counter, and toilets, all from East Star. Looking back I would've purchased cabinets from East Star as well if I'd known about them earlier. First off, I was looking for floating vanities for my bathroom and at East Star you can custom make your vanity by choosing wood, style, length, and type of countertop. The price is very reasonable (not much higher than if you were to buy prefabricated) and the options really are endless. The owner Mr. Chen is hands-on and walks around the store helping out customers and gives his honest opinion on a style and if it will be practical or not. Simon was so patient with me during the design process, giving his view and helping me hold up wood samples to see how something would look, and it took about a week for everything to get made and ready for pick up. Really a seamless experience. The stock they have here is very modern and the price is better than at competitors. And the sales associates are not pushy. What's not to love! They carry high end brands like Hansgrohe and Toto and everything is displayed really nicely in their brand new warehouse. I had ordered a kitchen counter somewhere else and after 1 month they told me the shipment was delayed. And so I had a few days to look for a replacement counter. East Star came in clutch and they have a whole selection of contemporary countertops in the back of the store (not displayed) that looked so much better than what I had been seeing at other showrooms. I ended up purchasing a new counter from them that I really love. I also purchased flooring for my whole house while they had a 25% off grand opening deal. Purchase and pickup for all the items I bought were very easy. Fast forward 1 month and my contractor somehow messed up the install of my shower set that I purchased from East Star so the shower handle was loose. I contacted East Star to order a replacement part and lo and behold they had a spare one that they could give me and told me to come by anytime to pick up. If that's not 5 star service I don't know what is! Can't say enough good things about East Star and Simon. I must have been at the store every few days to pick out something new or ask questions and Simon has always been responsive, knowledgeable, and very patient with my indecisiveness! No delivery services were provided after the vanities that I bought didn't work properly. My contractor had to deliver the vanity back and forth. The store didn't provide the date that the vanities would be ready to be picked up either. Our remodeling project was delayed and no one knows when the remodeling can be resumed. My contractor was really upset since he had to reschedule painting and all the other work related. The store would not answer my calls. Finally we were asked to go back to the store to pick the cabinets back, but were told that the factory would not fix them. You can either return the cabinets or take them as it is! As you can imagine how upset my contractor became after hearing this! We had to return the cabinets and started the whole process all over again! The whole remodeling process will take much longer than what we planned. So we had to stay at our current house longer without knowing when we can eventually move. This place is popping on the weekends and can be a little hard to get help. If you know what you want wrangle someone and you can get in and out relatively quick and grab some free lunch on Saturdays. The prices here are really competitive and in some cases a great deal. The showroom is nice and has a lot of layouts to get ideas from. We came here because they are a Sakura dealer which is the most bomb vent system you can get. They carried the full selection of vents which is pretty hard to find. read more

Our contractor Yuvi suggested that we shop around on our own first. We did that. We tried some similar type operations that are very close geographically to East Star. But at those other places we either got ignored or hounded or we were given utterly insane prices. After our "solo shopping " Yuvi took us ti East Star Building Supply and he introduced us to Jaime. That was all it took! A couple follow up visits. A few "redesigns" And before we knew it Jaime had a totally cool 3D work up of our custom kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Here is where I talk about the $. Previously we met a dude at another location. He was kinda snobby and haughty and he didn't act like he thought we had the $ to be worth his time. At the end he quoted us verbally. "Starting at 45k" and basically walked away from us. Jaime spent hours of her time with us before ever even talking about the money. In the end we made a huge deal for flooring. Cabinets. Bathroom fixtures. Garbage disposals. All kinds of stuff not included in snobby pants' verbal "Starting at 45k" quote. We walked out of East Star Building Supply with a receipt for essentially 75% of our project materials for less than 2/3rds what snobby pants quoted us for just kitchen cabinets. As we left. Pickup area is outside building so it's a hassle to go outside to pickup purchases. The business probably would be more successful if they have a better return policy and open on the weekends and holidays even with limited staffing.
