Hidden in plain sight! For years I've seen this lonely restaurant across the parking lot from a couple of my favs. But off in its own location and with slightly strange lighting, I was turned off. Walked in on a weekend around lunchtime and got seated promptly. Ambiance is pretty chic/modern, and staff are super friendly and attentive. Ordering is by QR code, and I found it interesting that we can adjust MSG / oily level on top of spice tier. The first few bites of every dish we ordered were spectacular - I was pretty blown away. Even though we had selected no MSG, by the time we were close to finishing the meal, I could feel the MSG sink in, and I was pretty parched the rest of the day. The eggplant century egg dish was my favorite - I took it to-go, and it was still good the next day reheated. The eggplant garlic dish intimidated me at first with how much garlic was present, but honestly really delicious after everything was mixed (maybe I'll ask for less garlic next time). The pork (la rou) + radish really paired well with rice, though I wish they had used bigger chunks/different dried radish. The squid might have been my least favorite - still good, but I didn't really enjoy the seasoning that tasted like Chinese skewer seasoning / MSG tasting. Truly authentic Hunan cuisine. Incredibly spicy, numbing, garlicky, greasy, runny nose-inducing, and tear-jerking like it should be! As Sichuan people, we have high spice tolerances but had to go with mid-spicy (the lowest level) on everything to not be in pain. The dishes are a bit expensive, but the portions are generous, so I definitely recommend to come in a group to family style it. I highly recommend getting these dishes with a side of rice: - 酸湯魚片 Poached fish fillets in sour soup (mid-spicy): Wowow I loved this; better than Wei's Fish just across the street ngl (I am also a fan of it though) because Easterly's really packs the punch that I was looking for in this dish! - 梅干菜炒四季豆 Stir-fried green beans with preserved vegetables: Fantastic. This dish is actually a *bit* (not really but u know) lighter than the green beans I usually come across, but I think it's perfect to pair with other such heavy flavors. - 干鍋孜然牛肉 Griddled cumin beef with leek: this might actually be a Xinjiang dish LOL but I love cumin. and leek. and garlic. A great back up restaurant when your first choice had too long of a wait. Conveniently located in the heart of Cupertino and near some heavy hitters, Easterly's food is actually good! Even though the ambiance was lacking and there was no music, the service was quick and most importantly there was no wait. What really surprised me was their pork fried rice. It is legitimately delicious. Perfectly seasoned and properly cooked. Honestly one of the better fried rice dishes I've had. The portions were huge as well. Great value for the price. Honestly, if I lived nearby I would order this to-go once a week. The frog legs and braised pork belly brought the place back down to earth. Not great, but perfectly serviceable Hunan food. Spicy, but their flavors were so muted. A clear step below some of the places around them. Overall the food reminds me of a good home cooked meal (with plenty of leftovers!). I was looking for a substitute to Hunan Impression due to the crowds, so I decided to try them out since I hear that they're very authentic. They have a location in Rivermark Plaza too, but this location is newer. I got their Mao's Braised Pork and Stir Fried Pork with Peppers. Both dishes were very different from what I've had in the past. The Stir Fried Pork with Peppers was quite spicy and had a lot of peppers, which is classic for Hunan food (a bit too spicy to me as a mild taster). The Mao's pork was braised well, not as good as what I had at Hunan Impression, but I would get it again. The prices are on the higher end for the portions though, but they're worth a try if you like authentic Hunan food. read more

So even though there's no chili symbol next to a menu item, if you are sensitive to spice, you can ask them for no chili pepper flakes. I ordered takeout via Uber Eats and scored a free Smoked Pork Fried Rice with the in-app promo and it was a delicious and savory palette cleanser between mouthfuls of fire. The portions were so generous that we are still eating yummy leftovers for two days afterwards! The takeout service was very efficient, friendly, and prompt. The dining area is large and was a bit empty probably due to the heavy rainy weather but their takeout counter was hopp I wish I took pictures of the delicious food and grand presentation in takeout boxes, but I was a bit breathless from the spice! Hunan cuisine is mostly spicy, so it was expected but we tried to pick non spicy items. Service is good and they are busy. The interior is nicely decorated and not as cheesy as other Chinese places. The dishes are mostly strong flavor and a bit too salty for us. Mongolian beef is slightly spicy which is a surprise because there's no pepper sign on the menu. We tried the meat with hand made noodle stir fry and it's too salty. The noodle tasted doughy but doesn't look like hand made as the width look quite small and even. The chef recommended steam sticky rice with spare ribs is nicer. Although I'm not sure why it's the sticky rice on top of the spare ribs and not the other way around as the spare ribs flavors were all dripping down to the bottom of the steamer and not on the rice. read more

Everything has no flavor and the food does not taste fresh, service was ok, he refilled our water once and never asked about food. I just had worst experience at this restaurant. My wife and I went in for lunch and ordered takeout since she had to get back home to take a call. While we waited for the food the call got canceled so we decided to eat in. The restaurant was basically empty with just one other couple at a booth. We took a seat at a booth while the takeout order was getting ready. When the order was ready we started to open the takeout to eat but we were asked by our waitress to sit at another table while we ate. I still don't know why but we complied. I moved a small plate and chopsticks at the booth to this new table so I can eat with a plate. Before I could start, I saw hands reach over and across me without word and snatch the plate and chopsticks brusquely. I was alarmed. It was not our waitress but another woman who could not speak any English. So I asked our waitress why this person appeared to be upset with us sitting at the restaurant and dining. She had no explanation and she apologized for her colleagues rudeness. I also noticed how the person who was so rude to us was so very solicitous of a Chinese speaking person that walked in with a white man. These people were offered the booth that we were asked to evacuate. Mind you there are a grand total three groups of customers at this point. Plenty of booths and other seating and no line at the door. My only explanation is that this rude employee did not want us there. I don't know her reasons but we are not Chinese or white. I was made to feel so unwelcome in a public space in America in 2024. It was devastating. read more

We like spicy so decided to check out this restaurant. We got the clams in fermented black bean sauce, shredded potatoes with dried chilis, and stir fried beef with pepper. Dish quality is pretty hit or miss. The clams stood out the most. Good sauce, good amount of spice. The potatoes and beef were so oily! So very oily! I could barely finish my share of the shredded potatoes because it was THAT oily. It also barely had any flavour. Not a fan. The beef was just okay. Some pieces were chewy. Good flavour but poor execution. The menu is very extensive, so this is the kind of place you'd need to visit a few times to get a sense of what you like/dislike. We'll probably give it another try but wouldn't repeat any of the dishes except for the clams, possibly. Prices are on the expensive side. Our bill was over $50 for 2.
