The Worst "Chinese tamale" EVER. For $8 a piece, you got a half palm size "Zong Zi" with 1 egg yolk and 1 dice size piece of pork inside. It's totally tasteless. I am glad I tried it before I shared with family and friends. Even if it's free, I won't eat it. That's how bad it is. All the rest of it are resting in garbage can. I suspect this place gave me a stomach virus not once, but twice. Gave the place the benefit of the doubt the first time, but once it happens a second time, there's really no question. It was so bad I was bed ridden for days and had to go to the doctor's. Stomach issues lasted much longer. This place specializes in bento boxes, where you choose from dishes that are left out throughout the day with no temperature control. Out-standing!!!!! New owners. Elsie retired. Very good northern style Chinese cuisine. Northern style menu has steamed/pan fried bread items whereas southern style Chinese is mostly rice. Northern style has Lamb influences because of proximity to silk road trading route to middle east. The colder climate also brings out preserved vegetables because of cold climate vs. Southern cuisine. Cheap rent area and they are small enough so the family can keep the quality up without being inundated by volume of customers. They don't have to hire additional help they have to train. They mostly speak Chinese. Their son speaks english if he is there. Much better than anything in Cupertino/Mtn View. 1) mapo tofu... one of the best interpretations. Similar to China. You get spicy chili pepper hot and mala numbing hot. You get different textures ranging from crunchy salty pickle to medium chewy ground pork to melt in mouth tofu. You get different hot starting from tongue numb to seating. Salty as usual. 10y ago you would never see this depth of flavor or lingering sensations in a mapo tofu without going to China. Great for takeout. Can't get soggy. Lasts a long time in the fridge b/c of the intense spices. 2) homemade dumplings. not frozen. Northern style influence. They make those by hand when you order them. Very good. A must try. Soft and Chewy hand rolled dough with melt in mouth meat filling. Melt in mouth achieved by right combo of fat and veggie in the filling. The veggie adds moisture as it cooks. One of the best in the bay area. I went at 830 pm so they weren't busy. If on a busy time they may not have time to hand make these fresh for you. Stunningly mouth watering delicious. Very difficult to find good dumplings with this type of quality. You will never find this frozen b/c the textures won't last. Very delicate. 3) garlic achoy. not salty. Smoky and garlicky. Standard Chinese veggie, chewy with stem and soft with upper leaf. Popular in Taiwanese places. Very good execution; brings out the texture of the vegetable. 4) Steamed bao: hand made. Veggie filling. Freshly made daily. 5) Pan fried Chinese filled pancake. Crispy on the outside and filled wth meat/bean thread noodle. Bese in bay area. Eat while hot within 30sec to 1 minute. Will hear the crunch on the outside as you bite in. If you wait longer the crispiness disappears. They have an additional menu written in chinese and english taped on the glass by the cash register for the dumplings and chinese filled pancakes.... order from there. The main printed menu doesn't have these specials. Don't bother with the asian food in mtn view. Rent too high and too crowded so they can't take time to cook and fabricate the hand crafted dumplings and buns. Took about 15 minutes to from/steam above items. Well worth the wait. There are two $8 lunch combos: * 3 dishes + rice + soup * 3or4 buns + 1 cold dish + small porridge You get three or four buns depending on the topping inside. The porridge and soup is nothing special. The dishes you can pick are decent. The buns are better than other places I have tried. I like the (shrimp, pork & chive) ones the most, but they are pretty salty. The plain buns are too plain and could use some salt or green onion. For the cold dish, I like the pig's ear. It is cooked the perfect amount of time for me. There are soft, gelatinous pieces and crunchy pieces. Bring someone who read Chinese, because some of the menu is Chinese only. :-) read more

The food reminds me of home flavors from Beijing. Though many snacks are originally from Tianjin, I built a palate for it while growing up in Beijing. It's hard to find authentic 煎饼果子 (pancake) with good sauce around the bay, but this place makes it right. 茴香猪肉包 fennel pork ban is phenomenal. Reminds me of my grandma's homemade buns. 油条 （fried dough) was a bit too oily. I like to dip them in a bowl of soy milk. I recommend you to try if you haven't done so. Came here twice. First time we (two ppl) got seated immediately. Second time we still got two ppl but waited for 10-15 min while there were seats open. Maybe it was a way the servers wanted to manage their flow. Very packed restaurant that seems to be the most popular shop in the plaza! I didn't realize this would be the case. We came here in the morning and beat the rush by about 15 minutes! My group was quickly seated and serviced. I've been wanting some jianbing, which is why I decided to try out this place. We ordered the two types of jianbing they offer: with fried stick or thin crispy dough, and the steamed roll with pork. Both were pretty unimpressive. They weren't crispy! Also, the youtiao in the jianbing was pretty terrible. It was chewy and didn't taste that great. The server was confused, so we had an accidental order of Chinese chives pancake. It wasn't a big deal, so we didn't bring it up. We just went ahead and went with the order. It's your typical congyoubing, so it was quite tasty. I felt these also could have been crispier. The "Famous" food is probably typical Nanjin/Tianjin area food, nothing spectacular but glad to have a restaurant in the Bay area for that. I had a "koushui chicken", chicken was cafe quality, big chunk rubbery meat, flavor is ok. 2.5 stars. The "Tianjin bun" was more disappointing, you can probably say "just like my mom made", yeah my mom is not good at cooking at all. The bun filling is weird pickled veggie with pork I think. Overall, a great Restaurant for Northern Chinese food. If you're not used to this type of cuisine, beware of the large menu! Having been here several times, dishes can be hit or miss. The things they do really well are the steamed buns, dumplings, and Chinese chives pancake (definitely get this one). The veggie dishes (mushroom/bok choy, a choy with garlic, eggplant) and cold dishes (shredded cucumber, pig ear, etc.) are pretty safe and standard as well. One dish that has me coming back for more is the Szechuan spicy fried chicken; it's perfectly seasoned and so tender! That being said, there are definite misses here as well.
