This place has wide arrays of dishes ranging from grills, pizzas, delis, panini stations, and their daily specials. From 6-10AM, they only serve breakfast menu, bagels, salads, cupcakes. After 11AM is when they start serving their lunch-dinner menu. I usually opted fot their burger, daily specials, and pizza option. Eat Street is the main MGH cafeteria. It's a solid option in terms of variety and the prices are quite reasonable! My favorite option here is the Mediterranean bowls station, where you can build your own bowl. It starts with a base of rice, you can add chicken, falafel, greens, peppers, other veggies, etc. The serving is huge and more than fills you up with a nutritious lunch for under $10. I'm a long-time patron of Eat Street Cafe, since 2001, and dropped by recently for the first time in a long time. Eat Street is about as good as it gets for a hospital cafeteria. You've got some healthy food, lots of unhealthy food, and low prices that are completely baffling. I have no idea how MGH breaks even on this place. If you're hungry, I'd point you to the Grill station or the Pizza station. The Grill offers up a great variety of sandwiches and fries, while the Pizza station serves up hot slices of Papa Ginos. On my most recent visit, I got a turkey burger, fries, and a ginger ale and was out of there for something like $8. The chefs and cashiers are super friendly and it's all made to order. Home of the worlds worst Tacos and Pasta now definitively the worlds worst Grilled Cheese. The gooey orange American cheese food is tasteless and sticky. But what really sets this sandwich at the bottom of the barrel is the rancid after taste of the mystery grease they slather on the firm dry bread they use to make this sandwich adhere to the grill. The rancid oil flavor overpowers any chance the cheese or bread may have and says "this is gross" in every bite. Yikes! I don't think they are making a profit here, just providing some decent to good food for staff, outpatients and other visitors. The ambience is classic cafeteria, but comfortable enough. I prefer to take mine to go as there are a couple of comfy places around the hospital where there aren't too many people and nobody cares if you sit and eat there. This being a hospital cafeteria, it would be helpful if there was information on the fold that gave an indication of sodium content and some other basic nutritional info. If you are on a low sodium diet, I don't think there is much that fits, so you are going to end up cheating if you are hungry. None of the hospital cafes or coffee shops provides much info about sodium and the staff is not knowledgeable. The surrounding neighborhood has some restaurants but they are not particularly close and they are way more expensive. read more

Expectations for a hospital cafeteria are pretty low, but this place is outstanding. Lots of choice- salads, sandwiches, grill, hot meals, fresh fruit, pizza and plenty of desserts. The food is fresh, well prepared and really inexpensive. I had a delicious baked piece of baked salmon with a generous portion of sauteed vegetables for $6.00+ 1.50= $7.50. This same meal in most restaurants would have been 2-3X. The salmonand sauteed veggies were delicious. There are daily regulars- i.e. medical staff and employees and plenty of visiotrs. Not my first time coming to this cafeteria. I only come here when I'm starving and don't really want to go out for my break. I like trying a bunch of food and I saw this one day. Since it's winter time and I kind of crave some hot soup for my meals I found the pho selection on the menu. I decided to try it! I thought it was similar to the regular pho but it wasn't. After I tried it I think I would never get it again. First, they don't have that much broth in it so it made it just like a pile of raw veggies in a plastic container, then when I ate it I didn't know they have chunks of jalapeño peppers in it. I thought it was just some green bell peppers so I ate it. But when I did my mouth was just on fire I couldn't taste anything else aside from the spicy feeling inside my mouth I cant even eat half of the food I got. It was horrible. Walked over to the main campus at MA Gen. Hospital from the Yawkey Outpatient building via pedestrian bridge. If you come this way follow signs to main lobby, then, turn left at information and down a flight of stairs. There are elevators too if you need them. The first thing you see when entering the cafeteria is dessert. I like this place already. The second thing you see if a huge salad bar. Four kinds of lettuce, beets, broccoli, mixed salads and marinated veg options plus all the things you expect. Then you have meats, eggs, cheeses, beans, seeds, and more. I like this place even more. Other lunch options included pizza, sandwiches, soups, entrees, burgers, grilled cheese, mac & cheese, and plenty more. The day we visited, the soup choices were: chicken noodle, turkey rice and pumpkin. Plenty of food choices to meet most needs and moods. A small breakfast offering included scrambled eggs, bacon, hash and potatoes. Not sure if other stations had other offerings - we arrived as breakfast ended (10:00) and lunch began. Salads are priced by weight, most cashiers take cash or credit unless otherwise 'signed'. There is no 'electronic app' payment accepted. Sorry apple and samsung. Once past the cashier get you napkin and plastic cutlery. The plastic flatware is rather flimsy but got the job done. Just don't push too hard on that fork. Seating is a mix of benches on one side and seats on the other making them wheelchair accessible. Although there are lots of seats here, if the dining room is full, you can try to find some across the hall (behind the stairs). The ice cream shop didn't look open during our visit, but I did notice there are microwave ovens against the wall in this section, right next to the dining area. Maybe you can heat up you lunch here? Before leaving, bus your table and leave everything at the station provided by the exit. It is with a heavy heart and an empty stomach that I write this review today. There are few joys that come with working on the weekend - 1 of them, is that there is less "hustle and bustle", which comes with the potential opportunity to make it to the café on time for breakfast. I strategically organized my day so that I would be able to get a breakfast sandwich and some hash browns before 10am. Everything was going well until about 930. Fortunately, I was able to see my last patient with a few minutes to spare. I frantically ran down to the cafeteria and made it to the grill line at 9:56. My excitement quickly turned to devastation when I saw the sign that said the grill was closed for cleaning. I was not alone, as several other patrons were also outraged by the premature closure of the grill. I ask that this incident be reviewed, as it is not the first time it has happened. It is my understanding that the grille closes at 10am; not 9:55 (though please correct me if I'm wrong). Despite my dismay over today's incident, I want to end by recognizing the hard work that you and your colleagues do to nourish patients and staff alike. read more

For some reason, when I worked at the General, I frequently "forgot" to make lunch at home, and breakfast for that matter. Eat Street is good, people! The salad bar, soups, sandwich section, pizza section, grilled meats area, even sushi once a week. And then when the day is going wicked rough, you can get a frappe at the ice cream counter. I think it's so funny what Jane S said "This is the mother of all Boston hospital cafeterias. But I'm not sure this mother can cook." I worked there about 10 years ago, and during that time the head of Nutrition Services was featured on one of the National News programs as a "Person of the Week" b/c the food and the options were *that* good. In fact, as an employee, you always knew when it was a local holiday b/c the traffic in Eat Street slowed down *that much more*. Also as Jane S mentioned, there are plenty of choices there, healthy and unhealthy. But it's up to you to decide which you want. I've been here at MGH several times in the past 6 months. There isnt anything close for food so this is almost compulsory. Starbucks is a decent walk and its 18 degrees today. The pace of the hospital staff is crazy in here especially at the break of morning and at noon. It's one of the most stressful places I've ever been, not to mention stressful eating places. The staff seems extremely rude to me. Considering how nice the hospital staff is to everyone, this place is 100% opposite. I believe the first 4 times eating here I had no idea how to order, where to order or how to order. Staff was less than helpful and I was tired of dirty looks within the first 2 minutes of being in this place. Breakfast has been the worst to overcome in the ordering "process"). They don't really advertise when breakfast ends so I've been caught in the twilight zone of 955am to 1005am. They end breakfast at 10 sharp or even a minute or two early. No exceptions. There are also certain places for each item to be ordered which isn't in a logical order or labeled. Is that a difficult task? And when you finally find an item you like, good luck figuring out where to order or stand in line to order. Or who to talk to about placing your order. They best advice I have on that is to look at the very small signs taped above the cooking area. It kind of says what you can order but it's not 100% accurate or in the right area. Not all stations have signs. Plus you have no idea who to order from or where the line ends/behings so you'll learn by trial and error (and end up with something you didn't order or want.) And God forbid you have a question. You'll get a weird stare if you ask anything (if you're lucky enough to make eye contact) but expect a muffled voice growling out something incoherent. The drinks are easy because they are on the shelves circling around inside of the cafeteria. All self service. Paying is fairly straightforward as you just find a cashier to bring your food to but make sure the sign of what type of transaction or currency they take can make that difficult as well. As for the food, as I finally got my order nearly 80% correct for breakfast, it was pretty good. Granted, it was my 5th visit and I was also successful in ordering an omelette but when I asked for bacon (which is in the very near vicinity of the omlettes) I got a quick glare as the staff member had to step one step to the left to obtain the bacon. I'm sure that bacon was to be ordered in yet another obscure area of the cafe but I couldn't tell you exactly. I was pleased with the taste of it. There are other issues like where to get trays, condiments, forks and knives, where to sit (always seems very crowded) but I'll leave that for those who like mystery and a challenge. This is the mother of all Boston hospital cafeterias. But I'm not sure this mother can cook. Granted, they never close and feed an incredible diversity of people everyday but who eats confetti vegetables and grilled liver (today's hot menu items)? The prepared hot meals for lunch and dinner are the standard uninspired and unhealthy hospital fare. Lots of fried food. I guess this is a business driver for the cardiologists! That said, there are healthy alternatives. A broiler station provides decent chicken sandwiches and burgers...and veggie burgers. When you go here, you need to order your sandwich through a glass window and wait while your meat cooks. This provides ample opportunity for observing the hospital industrial complex in a dark and confusing basement cafeteria. The other healthy alternative is an expansive salad bar, but watch out, its not the food that's dangerous here, its the people. Its not rare to see a person grab handful of food with their dirty hands from the crocks in the salad bar and despite the availability of tongs and existence of sneeze guards. read more

I've worked at MGH for the last 2 years. I'm there A LOT. And I've consumed most of my meals in this cafe-teria. And having been a a lot of hospital cafeterias over the years, this is by far the most impressive. They have a huge variety of food - including a pizza bar, rotisserie bar (I eat here most of the time - they often have 3 main items, such as turkey, ham, roast beef, marsala chicken, etc) and sides (including veggies, sweet potatoes, stuffing, all kinds of good stuff and fairly healthy), a grill, a cold sandwich bar, giant salad bar, softserve ice cream bar, real ice cream (with great flavors and cheesecakes, etc) bar, and more. Overall, great selection, good quality, good taste, fairly reasonable prices - always know I'll be leaving with something I like. They are also focusing on the healthy side - putting calories on stuff and labeling it according to healthiness: green, yellow, or red based on fat and calories. Really progressive, espeically for a hospital - where they should focus on this but never do. ALso, their desserts are great - the cookies and cakes especially. In my view, the best cakes are the white with orange frosting, white with strawberry, chocolate with chocolate. Let me start by saying I can't believe I'm writing a review of a hospital cafeteria. Honestly, who does that? It's a cafeteria, how good can it be right? Well, that's just it. It's REALLY good. Over the last 3 days I've eaten multiple meals here and they've all surpassed my expectations. Its got all the standard cafeteria staples, (hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, salad bar, and revolving entree) but they're just done better. I eat out a lot and have sampled some of Boston's finest culinarily offerings. That being said, the pork loin I ate here 2 nights ago is in the top 5 that I've ever eaten. Seriously, it was that good. Additionally, they do desserts really well, specifically the pies. Don't get me wrong, the cakes / cookies are good but if you see pie, grab a slice you won't be disappointed. My final advice, get the bran muffin. Whether it be from the coffee stand or the cafeteria they're all the same and they are amazing. I'm grabbing a dozen before I leave today. read more

Having had a few stays at MGH, my wife first discovered Eat St due to her dedication to staying with me. After a while the meds I was on affected my taste buds to the point there was little on the hospital menus I would eat. When she brought something back for herself, I would try a bite. Boy, did my mouth light up! And it really wouldn't matter what it was. Mornings were best with a cup of their coffee and the Breakfast Bread Pudding (small of course). After my in house stay (or my time share as I called it), return trips to MGH for checkups also included stops to Eat Street. I've told many people that if I worked close to MGH, I would probably eat lunch there every day. I can honestly say that the Food Services Staff, seems to totally have their act together. For the few negative comments I have seen here, remember that we are all human and do have an occasional bad day. Even patients! read more

I would go back just for that someday even if I have no reason to be in the hospital. for hospital food, eat street cafe is pretty good. in fact, i would probably go there even if i don't work in the vicinity if seeking food in the mgh area as the prices are so reasonable due to subsidies. for breakfast, the menu is varied -- from healthy yogurt and fruit, pastries and bagels, to the griddle where you can bring said bagel to get a made-to-order egg and cheese sandwich, made-to-order omelettes, and the very quick line for regular scrambled eggs, cheesy scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, sausage patties, and regular pork sausage. this same quick line also provides the chicken liver delicacy on friday. they also used to have baked ham on fridays, and to my disappointment, stopped this practice. depending on who serves, the serving size can be pretty substantial. at another station, we cannot forget the breakfast pizza. scrambled eggs, your choice of sausage, bacon or no meat, with a layer of melted cheese on top of pizza dough. it's definitely color coded red for "select very little of" on the healthy foods to choose from scale located throughout the space, but a must try. juice and drinks are abundant, as well as a coffee station, but i'd rather get my coffee at coffee central upstairs. for lunch, the menu is just as varied as breakfast, with the usual salad and soup bar, burgers, pasta and the daily specials. the daily specials, whether it would be fish and chips, chicken fingers, what have you, are abundant in serving size. and they have the usual normal pizza at this time too, after 10am when the breakfast hours end. with the amount of traffic here, eat street is also the model of efficiency, but still best to avoid the shift change times. and the behind the scenes areas of where they prepare food are very clean too. and best of all, there is a sundae bar after the cashiers! a nice treat for a great price. read more

It has a large space with many options most if not all of which have labels of their nutrition values. Great selection of tasty food at very very reasonable prices. I work near the MGH, not for the hospital, but I go here a few times a week because it is so much cheaper than any other food options in the area and I know I'll be able to find some tasty vegetarian eats. Only things I don't like is that they use styrofoam trays and plates and they seem to have a problem with getting the eating areas cleaned of crumbs/spills in a timely manner. read more

The cafeteria at MGH is amazing... the food is always great, there's plenty of options. However, I have been here a few times for breakfast, and I absolutely love the bacon egg and cheese on a croissant/english muffin. I have to say though, that whenever I go and the young gentleman is making it, he takes a very long time, overcooks the bread, and never really lets the cheese melt. There are a few other people who work the grill, and they are much better at it. I've been late to an appointment before because I thought that getting a breakfast sandwich would be fast (which is usually is if this man doesn't make it). Otherwise, fantastic cafeteria! read more

Ok cafeteria. Better than a gas station but still needs improvement. Scrambled eggs need more care, always burned, overpriced and mediocre options for breakfast. Sandwiches are good but rather slow. For lunch if you'd like a sandwich the people are incredibly slow, inflexible and will only place 2 anemic looking slices of bacon on a sandwich and charge you at least 1.50 over the price of the sandwich for this. If you'd like a burger with one more patty, they don't sell that, they insist they must give you 2 plates with 2 burgers and you can make it yourself I suppose. Same with the salad, if you'd like more chicken and are willing to pay for it, they insist on giving you 2 and paying for it. Don't understand the rationale but I do understand their pricing and it is to charge as much as possible essentially. read more
