I've been here before to see some favorite DJs playing. I am here tonight because one of my favorite bands, Dear Boy, is playing! There was a bit of a line to get in since tonight is an all ages show but it moved quickly. When I was here before they had a picture booth type setup where they had various props (hats, glasses, inflatable animals of all sorts) and a photographer taking your picture, but they don't have it tonight, perhaps because it is an all ages free night. I went for 143. It was a nice place. It had multiple rooms and two outdoor places. I was surprised that there wasn't a line to get in when I got there. And the place didn't seem too overly packed. I was able to see 3 great bands in a fun spot, but there were some major downsides to the echoplex. The beer was insanely overpriced, especially when you consider the fact that it's served in a plastic glass that is less than the normal 16 oz pour. That was majorly weak. The tickets were $15 for 2 local acts and a touring act...the website indicated 11.50-13.50 range for tickets, which is sort of high considering the fact that you can see music for free in a lot of places...but the bands were good, so that made up for it. The sound was not good. This was rock and roll, not a club. The subs were so loud it was obnoxious. One of the bands that performed primary focus was the guitar and its unique tone/contribution to the music, but instead it was THUD THUD THUD all night long. Overall, it wasn't awful, but it wasn't great. I'll go back, but will just drink heavily beforehand to save the $$ read more

I've only gotten to know this place because of an event called 143. At first, when it was my first time it can be really confusing to get there because they actually have two entrances depending on the event. So I thought the entrance was the one on top on Alvarado but I had to walk down to the second entrance. When you get in it is a giant space to go on because it is two floors and it also does have an outside patio for you to go outside to just in case it does get hot. The event 143 held here is always fun because they have top hits and other types of hip hop on the bottom floor. While the top one is for rnb and slow jams. They have decent prices for their drinks displayed on the wall and since it has a lot of space they can accommodate a lot of people. I always had fun at this place thats why I always go every last thursday of the month where this event is always held here at the echoplex. read more

LOUD. This place is LOUD. I've probably seen five shows here and each time I came out with my ears still ringing and muffled. I never worry about bands being loud here. I actaully saw Wavves play here and thought they sounded better than when I saw them at the Music Box (A bigger, more expensive venue). You can get incredibly lucky and see a great band here for as little as $20. A price like that is hard to come by nowadays. This place has a great atmosphere; If you're not shy, you're bound to talk to some really interesting people. The food they have at the bar isn't half bad either (Pizza, Calzones). People complain about parking, but I usually find street parking by the Burger King nearby so I always just go there and walk over. No biggie. read more

I saw CSS perform here last year and they rocked so hard! Great small venue, but beware if you have sensitive olfactory nerves because this place will start to stink of BO and sweat. I know, the ceilings aren't that high and you're essentially in a basement, but cmon! Stop being stingy with the air and turn it on high. Tacos Ariza is a couple blocks from the Echoplex. DISAPPOINTING Workers were really rude. Particular the white girl working the door as well as the white guy with a beard and the older black guy with the dreads. They must really hate their minimum wage paying job. They definitely should retrain these people in customer service as they represent this entity as a whole. It also draws a ghetto crowd. First time here and I had a blast with the DJ. Drinks are expensive. 14 dollars per shot and the Adios is 18 dollars too so might as well go with something that is stronger. BEWARE of this bartender in the back. She will still your cash. I bought two Adios and it came back as 36 dollars and 4 dollars in change. When she hand it over to me i was gonna grab it. Instead she turn around with the money and took the 4 dollars and kept it for herself as a tip. I was gonna tip her with that anyway but doing that to me it shows that this isnt her first time. BEWARE OF HER. SHE IS BLONDE AND IN HER 40s. Great place to have fun but very scandalous. Some people are nice and Some people will steal your phone and return it back to you in return by buying them a drink. So watch out for these people and never hand your phone to anyone if they're asking to help you. Some of these people are very desperate and attack those who won't remember anything. We went here Friday night to listen to some live music. It's advertised as a 'dance night', but really, only a couple of people were dancing. Didn't mind that much, as I saw a couple of good bands. Drinks are well-priced, sounds are good, people are cool. Laid back vibe. Attire ranges from casual shirt-and-jeans to full-on club mode. I will definitely go back. read more

Echoplex gets only two stars for two reasons: (1) Although this place hosts some good bands/artists, their beer on tap apparently was old and not fit for drinking. My friend got seriously bloated from it and I who had only one cup of it got bloated enough that I couldn't sleep. I called to bring it to their attention and they haven't called back. Perhaps it was a one-time thing that's not normally a problem there, but the fact that they've shown no concern about it concerns me. (2) The bouncer put his dirty bare hands all over my friend's cigarettes and practically shoved them up his nose trying to tell if they were indeed tobacco before putting them back in the box and giving them back to my friend. Absolutely low-class. He didn't even ask permission first. And he was rude for no reason, making unnecessary cocky comments, even though we were friendly. He was a total douchebag. I'll still give 2 stars for the fact that the music and the sound were good inside. read more

The Echo/Echoplex is a great venue for live music and they always have events with different and interesting artists - the last one was a benefit show with headliners Dawes featuring a bunch of bands. Sometimes these shows are a bit crowded so there's not very much room for dancing, but the atmosphere is great. I'm a huge fan of Funky Soul and it's always a great time. I like it because there's a lot of events that you can get into free which is always helpful, but they are really strict with the cut-off so you have to be on time! Also if you don't know the venue it's a bit confusing - The Echoplex is on Glendale and the Echo is upstairs on Sunset. The first time my friend and I went we took forever finding parking because we couldn't pay for the lot and then ran all the way to the Echoplex and then realized we had to run all the way up onto Sunset and we didn't make it in time to get in free:( read more

Nice little place to watch your favorite band play. The standing area is just the right size to have a full on mosh pit going on but small enough to make sure that everyone is packed in for stage diving safely. The bar they have there is fully stocked. They make a whiskey sour there that is very strong. Usually whenever I order a whiskey sour they tend to be on the weak side and taste like a really sour lemonade but this place has a good mix for the drink. The only downside of the place is the parking. There is no parking lot for your cars, only valet parking and who has the money for that? If you do then great for you but if you don't then you have to venture out into the surrounding areas which can be scary at night. I parked a few blocks away from the venue and while walking back to my car these two guys following my friends and I were sketchy as hell. Maybe itll be worth it to pay the extra 10 dollars to not get mug but I am a cheap man. read more

Sure there's pros and cons to this place but the Echoplex is a landmark venue. Its really more about the experience than anything. You get that raw intimate performance you cant get at bigger venues. It's a great place to meet new people or just to hang out with friends. Definitely chill friendly LA vibes everywhere. And yes, you can smoke weed there (just remember to share). ** And they also have a water cooler that's free for people to drink which to me is the greatest. One of the best venues to see live shows at in all of LA. The atmosphere, crowd, everything is great and combined with the fact that they have some amazing and diverse coming through each and every week solidifies the Echoplex as one of my favorite venues in LA. I used to live right around the corner so my roomie and I would catch shows all of the time random and found lots of new bands that we never would have come across otherwise. A great venue that honestly I had never heard of until within recent months. My girlfriend is a music connoisseur and knows more underground artists that anyone I know. An artist that she loves was playing a show here so she got us some tickets. Honestly I had never heard of him either but he put on a great show. For those of you wondering it was Pictureplane. Great show in a great venue with a great crowd....that's what I call a great night! We'll be visiting Echoplex again before the summer's over, I can guarantee that...and if none of you have heard of Pictureplane I highly recommend checking him out online and a show of his if possible...great artist! read more

I'm writing this review on my own accord in response to the several one star reviews on here from people who have no idea how to use yelp. Giving a place a bad rep because you were doing something clearly illegal or against the rules and got kicked out demonstrates that you have no idea how nightclubs, businesses, or really human society in general function. If you're giving a business with an expensive liquor license a one star review because you or your girlfriend got caught and kicked out for underaged drinking, you're reviewing the fact that you committed a (low level and stupid) crime and put the person who caught you in the position of either getting fired or having the business possibly shut down if they don't kick you out. Same goes for smoking weed, smoking indoors, or showing up with crazy expired non valid ID that could get their liquor license pulled. If you get ejected or refused entry because of something you did and you're mad about how "they weren't cool about it," stop being a baby about it and get your shit together. If a bouncer punches you in the face or is racist or abusive towards you for no reason, by all means yelp about it. But if you were kicked out for a perfectly valid reason that was your fault, call the wahmbulance, order some no more tears shampoo, and grow the fuck up. "One star because I was smoking drugs in the bathroom. I know it was wrong but they didn't have to kick me out! I knew it was wrong but I did it anyway, so I'm here to cry, wahhhh." As for the echoplex, the few shows I've attended were fun, although on a packed night it gets sweaty as balls, so be prepared to get condensed sweat from the ceiling dripped on you. I don't drink so I have no idea what the drinks or drink prices are like, but they have some pretty decent shows and tickets are always reasonable. I usually have a good time. A lot of their shows can be weird white people shit but the good ones tend to be amazing, Big Frieda and Blonde Redhead being a few highlights that were incredible. Bootie LA is probably my favorite night there. Some notes: Parking in that area is shitty unless you valet, so if you don't want to spend the cash prepare to go on a parking adventure if it's a busy show. There is no coat check and backpacks and big-ass bags aren't allowed in, so don't be surprised by that either. If your ID is crazy expired expect problems, because it's not valid after it's expiration and doesn't satisfy the requirements of having a liquor license. Aside from that, pick up a cheap ticket and enjoy a great show. Or a weird show. Whatever your deal is. read more

BE CAREFUL OF THE BARTENDERS here when you pay cash and credit. Last night I paid for an $8 beer with a $5 bill and $4 ones to include a tip. The older white male bartender with medium length brown hair accepted my money then called us back to the bar after a few seconds. He had replaced my $5 bill with a $1 - and claimed I only gave him 5 $1 bills. My friend witnessed me counting out the cash. Sneaky, dishonest and desperate way to make an extra $5. When I complained to Jasmin, the manager she spoke to him and then told me to not order from his bar to avoid problems. She should've comped us a drink to do damage control for the problem. I've been to a couple of shows here and it's nice enough, but I can't forgive what happened yesterday. A friend and I were supposed to see Wavves tonight, and he bought his ticket weeks ago. Apparently, his order never processed, so they emailed him saying they'll return the money but they can't give him a ticket because the presales are sold out. So he asked if they could reserve him a ticket at the door because according to the website, there will be some tickets available before the show. They said they couldn't, and he'd have to try his luck. Really? You can't reserve him a ticket or offer a voucher for a free show sometime in the future for something that was their fault? What kind of service is that? That's some bullshit. read more

I've been here twice now and each time it's been fun, plus everyone has been friendly. The place is pretty much one giant dance floor with small tables for your drink towards the back end. Drinks can be pricey but that's expected, so pre-game if you don't want to finish the night broke lol It's become one of my favorite venues in LA for sure. read more

I was a little bothered by the situation but cooperated. I stepped outside and she asked me to give her a statement about the fight. I was a little in shocked because I was dancing all night she didn't ask me she assumed I had been in this fight. She tells me she nows it was me because of my red sweater and red lipstick. Mind you there is 3 other girls at this place with the same description. I informed her it wasn't me, my friends tell them I was with them all night, but she then leaves me there and tells the a guy there what I might assume is the head of security that I was in a fight . again I tell him it wasn't me and if they want they can bring the girl that gave them this info so she can confirm its not me. This guy said in a very rude way "No! go back inside!". I made a comment and said wow this just ruined my night. He then yells "whoa this guys are just doing what they are suppose to do what of someone hit you and no one was around you would be upset. Now go back inside" I try to tell him how I understood but before I could say anything he tells me " I said go back inside or what you want your $10 back, cus I can give you that to leave" now with anger and attitude. I felt so disrespected and belittled I told him that won't be necessary I'm done my night is ruined. So me and my friends leave. I will not be back to this place. New Years Eve My daughter was savagely removed from a bathroom stall while my daughter was coherent and asked to be left longer she was not feeling well, she has IBS. Security proceeded to crawl under the stall and drag her to the ground kicking her , while in a fetal position. Her family and friends watch in horror as they too were held back. She was dragged outside and security pressed charges even though the police officer thought she should be set free. What kind of place is this to have FUN? My favorite lounge of all time.....could be a normal Wednesday with the DJS spinning or an amazing night with good vibes and awesome artists....for a cheap price.....beer selection is pretty good with a decent price...favorite part of the entire venue is the smoking patio where I could enjoy a finely rolled blunt or 3....security is on it which in turn makes it a drama free location....dub club is a must on Wednesday night!... read more

My girlfriend and I had a good experience here before so we came last Wednesday night to enjoy the music again. Knowing there is a cover after 10pm, we actually ran to get to the door in time. At 9:59pm we and another few people stood outside ready to go in and then we were informed that it was now $15. We were there a minute early, out of breath, and they couldn't be nice enough to let the few of us in (there was no line or anything). Lame. I went to Funky Sole Night at the Echo a long time and enjoyed myself, but my experience at the same event at the Echoplex recently was not enjoyable. Seems like one of those venues where they kind of want the patrons to feel unwelcome. After waiting in line outside, I paid $10 cover even though there wasn't any live music or performance, nor is it a particularly nice place. A tiny little well drink is about $10, and we had to wait in a 20-30 minute line every time we wanted to get drinks. (That drink price would be fine if it wasn't so tiny, if the place was nicer, if there was no cover, and if I didn't also pay 25 minutes of *my time* for it.) So basically I paid $10 for the honor of entering a place where I spent half the time waiting to buy overpriced drinks. And for readers who are wondering, the people there are very much your standard Echo Park grungy hipster types. Ironic facial hair and crusty babybangs abound. Quite crowded. My recommendations on how to improve the experience: Don't charge $10 cover when there's nothing special inside unless it comes with a drink ticket or something. Have more than one bartender per thousand customers (with what you charge and the crowds you get, I *know* you can afford it). And don't price your drinks like that unless you can justify it with decent service or size at the very least. It's simple - respect your damn customer. The other reviews about violent bouncers and fraudulent credit card charges don't surprise me. God forbid someone feel like not tipping after waiting half an hour for their drink. read more

I had never been here before but attended the Propagandhi show last night. The venue is a good size and has benches/couches to sit on a large bar in back and a pretty great sound system although I was stationed about 1 foot away from the speakers for about half the show......wait what? what did you say?....riiiiiiiiinnnnnngggggg. The surrounding streets are not the cleanest and the parking was a little difficult to find but they did have valet. Either way it was a quick entry and reasonable venue to see a show. The drinks are a rip off! I got a jack and coke it was 80% ice 15% coke and 5% whiskey! Saw how the bartender did it, there was less than a shot of whiskey in my drink! Went here with a few friends for a girls night. The music was ok but the place was really stuffy and there was some weird freak show with ppl humping blow up dolls and a guy who looked about 50 at least, was on stage in a thong leotard, shaking his nut sack and humping the stage. Kinda disturbing really. Not our cup of tea. We ended up leaving and going to circus disco. Much nicer place and better music. read more

I have to give this place a 4 based on the Wednesday night Dub Club experience alone. (Once I went on a Saturday and it was more of an Emo crowd - not that I'm against the Emo crowd... I just like a man to wear pants that are baggier than mine). Anyway, Dub Club is always a cool crowd. Sometimes DJs, sometimes live reggae, but always a good mix of men and woman and lots of room for dancing. The drinks tend to be a bit watered down, but that's ok. Go to Short Stop ahead of time and get your drink on for cheap. Then, walk over and down to the Echoplex to dance it off. Remember this is the one that is down off the ally of Glendale Blvd (not the entrance off Sunset). Bring cash for your entry fee. The bar takes credit card. Oh, and the papoosas from the cart outside of dub club are yummy! read more

I'd only been here once before, for a fundraiser concert put on by The Pixies frontman Frank Black and his wife. That was a great night (with surprise guest Tenacious D, w00t!) but this last time I was there to check out Bootie LA and their Mash Up night and it was a rocking good time! The mash up tunes are fun, and the vibe is nice--the people are just there to have a good time and dance so there's no ridiculous posturing or idiotic behavior. Except for this group of underdressed ho's next to us, one of whom nearly skewered my foot with her stiletto! The real highlight of the night for me was the performance by the band Smash Up Derby, who performed mash-up songs live--it was like getting two cover bands for the price of one. There's a female and male singer, and they seamlessly blend disparate tunes to make an interesting new hybrid. One of the combos was them mixing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with "Bad Romance," so you get the idea. There were tunes from Boston's "More than a feeling" to Nine Inch Nails' "Closer", which was very impressive. The drink prices here are typical (around $10 for cocktails), and the parking's problematic (just valet it), but the cover was cheap and it was a really cool time so it was worth it. read more

The parking is REDIC. Park and follow the train of people going up and down everywhere to get to the show. There's two entrances, a patio and a stage with 2 or 3 bars for the concert hall. Not too shabby. Sound was good. Their A/C was great at some parts and horrid in other parts. The artists were getting really sweaty. I don't like seeing shows here. The place is relatively huge, but because of a low ceiling for much of the space and placement of the sound booth, there is only a small portion that actually gives a good view of the stage. My drinks here have been of varying degrees of quality and some of the staff could use a class in customer service. Maybe they are tired of the typical clientele that I have encountered here, that being the douchebag of the hipster variety. They always have bands I want to see, though, so back I come.
