One time a guy shushed me and my punch happy friend for exchanging LIGHT conversation in the very back of the venue near where the bartender was taking drink orders. Worst Customer Service Ever, I'm suprised I even have to leave a review to discuss how bad of an experience I had. I was so excited to go with my brother here but as soon as we got there, GOSH greeted by the most energy depleting security guard. We were showing ID's and he we was just giving us nasty looks while smacking on his toothpick like if he had never seen a pair of humans before. I tried to ignore it but as I was walking in he just kept giving us such a glare it was un tasteful. I tried to have fun the vibes were ok nothing crazy, I then got thirsty so me and my brother walked to my car to get cold water. On our way back we showed IDs again and security guard started questioning us saying what we're doing why are we coming back so we told him. I thought it was okay at first you know he was doing his job but then I explained we went to just get water and he started saying no re-entry which he didn't imply at first, followed by you can't bring outside drinks in with a mean tone. I then said "Sir, I just said we went to the car to get water I DO NOT have it with me as you can see". He started giving us attitude saying why we're even showing him our ID?? at that point I was annoyed so I said "Just let us in sir we explained ourselves I don't know why this is so complicated". He noticed I got annoyed and started saying "Omg girl I was just joking damn you can't even take a joke why would you show me your ID again I don't want to see it" literally contradicting himself trying to make it seem like he wasn't just being rude. So my brother ended up just telling him "just have a goodnight" and we walked back in, but at that point though I felt so uneasy and just wanted to leave cause he left both of us just feeling weird. Even if he was "joking" please just have a security guard who doesn't "joke" on the clock and leave people with uncertainty, so unprofessional never coming back. read more

Went yesterday to see a band I was really excited about. The entire experience was terrible which is unfortunate because I was looking forward to it all month. Doorman seemed to be in a bad mood and the vibe immediately felt off when we walked in. $72 after tip for a pizza, fries, and two cocktails. I shouldn't have tipped but I didn't realize how bad the experience would be. The cocktails tasted like expired lime, the pizza was smaller than a personal pizza, and service was slow. I wish I got a beer but I saw good reviews about the drinks. Bartenders had no personality and weren't hospitable. There's no security managing the line outside so people were cutting and causing confusion. There stage is low so unless you make it in the first three rows you can't see anything. The opening DJ was placed off to the side in the crowd, and had bad transitions just fading tracks in and out. They had the subwoofers off for the opener so you mainly got piercing highs and low quality mids. Once the main act went on the sound system was lacking overall and sounded blasted at times when the music got loud, even with the subwoofers on. It got really hot in the crowd towards the end. Saw so many good reviews about this place but the experience was disappointing and underwhelming. I wouldn't go back even if I had free tickets to an artist I liked. read more

Caught the kickoff of Failure's US tour at this intimate spot! It was my first visit, and while the line to get in was long, the staff let us order tacos while we waited--they were delicious and a total lifesaver. The crowd was friendly, and the check-in process was seamless. Since we arrived early, we snagged seats on the left-side bleachers; the view was perfect and stayed unobstructed all night. The ambiance is chill, but I was slightly let down by the acoustics. I'd heard great things, but the bass got quite muddy during the louder sets. It only really shined during the quieter moments. I love having this hot venue down the street from me. The first time I went it was just to hang out and have drinks and the second time was to see a live show (Robyn Hitchcock). This spot is great in that it has so much space, you never feel claustrophobic, I love the huge outdoor smoking area, with plenty of seating (you might see a celeb or two, I spotted David J, which was fun for me as a fan of Bauhaus and Love & Rockets). I don't smoke anymore, but it seems you might be able to vape inside the stage area (I saw someone vaping during the show and no one cared, which would be great to be able to have some nicotine with my drink again). Seeing a show here is so awesome, it feels really intimate. Drinks are not unreasonable, nor is the food. In the front bar area, they run old movies and I was so impressed they were running an old Buster Keaton film. I had a pizza, it was good and just enough. I love also that they provide earplugs for you as you go into the stage room. As an old Gen X lady, the thing that strikes me most about this venue is how clean and safe feeling it is. There's no more grungy club feel these days, it must be generational. I am kind of laughing at the reviews saying they experienced bad service by snooty staff (I personally didn't experience this, but hello, hipsters be hipsters), "racism"...all I can say is try to view the world in a less entitled and subjective perspective. That being said I still like it, the fries are still good and the shows fun and varied. First time going to Zebulon was for a Lectures on Tap talk about Brain Rot. I know this is a music venue majority of the time, but it was also a great place to see a very informative presentation! The place is small and I'd say the stage is not very high off the floor so it makes for a great intimate space. There's also a big outdoor area which I'm sure is used as a smoking patio of some sort. We parked across the street on a small side street with no meter. Our car was still there when we got out of the event. The talk on Brain Rot was so good! We learned a lot about how doom scrolling is so bad for you and how the internet has enhanced and ruined everything at the same time. Definitely a small, unique place and set-up. read more

This was our final stop of the night, and honestly, it ended things on a high note. The place was buzzing, but not in an overwhelming way,just the right amount of energy to keep things fun without feeling packed. The outdoor space is huge, and it makes the whole vibe feel really open and relaxed, perfect for kicking back or chatting it up with friends. Inside, the drinks were solid. Priced well for LA, and they didn't skimp on the pours. Nothing overly fancy, but they get the job done and taste good. What I liked most was how casual and easygoing it felt. No attitude, no stress, just a good spot to hang late into the night. Came to hear a band last month that doesn't tour often (loveliescrushing) -- had never been here before in my 20+ years of living in L.A. Overall, I found this to be a good place for live music and relaxing over a drink: the sound was well mixed and nice and loud but not "hey! have tinnitus for the rest of your life!" loud. I wasn't sure what to expect when coming here for a concert. I knew parking would be bad just by looking at Google Maps. What I didn't expect was how bad the traffic would be on a Saturday night. I ended up parking until I5, which is actually well-lit, but I originally passed it up to see if I could find something a little closer. It took me almost 30 minutes to swing around back to the spot! Luckily, it was still there, and the guy behind was very nice in letting me parallel park. There's a spot pretty close to the entrance, but be careful as there's a lot of red curbs that aren't very visible. Walking in, there's a bar/restaurant in front of the actual concert/dance area and an outside area as well. The entrance to the concert is to the left of the bar. You do need to download the app to show your ticket and then they stamp your arm going in. I was shocked to find there were not very many places to sit. I'm not a fan of standing for 2 hours. Against the wall, there are about 25 feet of wooden step-like bleachers. I sat at the very top and that turned out to be a smart thing. If you sit on the floor with tables, the people standing in front of the stage block your view and you end up standing anyway. I was able to sit for the entire concert, which was great, but those wooden benches didn't pass the butt test so bring a coat or something to sit on. The people working there were very nice and seemed to be enjoying their jobs and each other. There is security on the outside as you enter the place. So my recommendation is to get there early if you want to sit. The concert was advertised to start at 8, but a sign on the door said it would start at 8:15 and actually started around 8:25. It was just under 2 hours so you got your money's worth. read more

Came in on a friday for a regular DJ set. Sooooo many people, there's a cue to get in but they're letting people in constantly so you're not really waiting at all. Outside patio is cool but packed and if you can't stand the smell of cigarettes, move indoors. Inside is the DJ booth along with a dance floor that is tiny and hottttt. zebulon is a staple of the north east LA music scene- whether you are there to see a touring band or aura farm on the patio, it tends to be a great time. unfortunately, the pitfall of this establishment is the pretentious, insolent employees. For one, the front security (past 8/9pm) is always in a bad mood. Countless times I've greeted him and tried to ask how his day is, only for him to never engage. But that's just scratching the surface- the real jerks are the booris, brusque, holier than thou bar employees. First off, it isn't uncommon to find them selecting the automatic highest option for tipping, instead of allowing the customer to choose. As if they are doing actual service work, but no, they are simple bartenders who do the bare minimum. Then, they will have the audacity to give you dirty stares when you adjust the tip rate. Now, the real meat of this review- the blatant, unfiltered racism. This past Saturday, I was out with my girlfriend and her friends, all of whom are visibly people of color (Pakistan, black, Jew) . Despite patiently waiting before most customers, for a collective 20 minutes they were repeatedly ignored, with the bartenders favoring the white customers and serving them immediately. I witnessed these bartenders avoid eye contact with my friends, despite numerous attempts to get their attention... This should come as no surprise to regular Zebulon attendees- they do a lot of posturing to give the impression of an inclusive, progressive environment, however this could not be further from the truth. You will find them often playing artsy, independent foreign films to try and act like a bastion of culture, however they won't ever mention the gentrification of the north east LA they have actively participated and contributed to. With all of this, it's no surprise the only consistent customers will be your average 50 year old divorced white male, looking to start a new polycule of spry, young zillenials. read more

I came to this cool spot to see The Hexxers & Mark Sultan perform. One of the best nights of my life. Mark killed his set, and the crowd wasn't as rowdy as it would be, as opposed to places like Alex's Bar in Long Beach. The sound team set up the amps and everything to make the sound quality sound amazing. The venue, being so small, made the sound super loud, but no complaints here! The venue (the dance floor & stage area) is so cozy and intimate. There is a small stage, ample seating (think coffee shops that have stairs that you can sit on and work), and a small bar at the back with stools that look so vintage. They also have a live DJ that plays such great jams. There is also a huge outdoor patio that has fairy lights and so many tables and benches - if it gets too hot in the venue, you can excuse yourself and get some air. When you first come inside, the actual bar itself (there are 2 bars: 1 in the concert venue, 1 main bar, which is what I'm writing about) is gorgeous, and the liquor selection is so diverse! The vibes and ambience is nothing short of pristine. The bartenders are so lovely, they make gorgeous drinks, and serve you with a smile on their faces! I didn't try the food, but I'm sure it would be delicious. Will update the next time I go. Overall, I would recommend coming here for drinks & live music! Also, the parking situation. Parking can be hard to find, especially if bands are playing that night. There is a small side street if you turn right immediately after you see the venue, and you can park on the curb, or you can find street parking across the street on Fletcher. read more

This is one of my favorite "active" (opposite of laid back?) bars in the area. It's actually a bit of everything. There is a more traditional bar area that feels like your casual bar, a pretty large dance room with another bar, and a large outdoor area. I like this place mainly because of this reason, you can keep switching rooms throughout the night and not get bored. The dance floor is actually busy unlike many other places these days where people don't even dance no more. The patio is also a great vibe. Prices are decent and no cover charge unless there is some type of event, which they do have pretty often. I did not drive there but I believe your best chance would be street parking on the blocks if you do. Definitely recommend checking it out. read more

Came here to see Sam Blasucci and Tashaki Miyaki play -- the opening band (Sam) was really good -- the music venue is an open area with a tiny bit of seating off to one side. There's a huge outdoor patio -- great place to hang out if you're not here to see the band. There's also a small inside bar with a handful of tables and a decent food menu. Crowd was a mix of 20s-40s or 50s, mostly white (it's Silverlake). Parking is tough. Managed to squeeze into a spot on the street under the overpass. read more

I really enjoyed this spot! I came during a soul night, and it was lit! We got here after midnight so we didn't have to pay cover. I do know that most weekend events have a cover. I really liked how big this bar/club is. They have a nice sized dance floor, that has a stage you can go up on to dance on. They also had a pull down screen with videos playing , that matched the theme of the night. The outside patio area is definitely the highlight of this spot. This is my favorite spot to check out for events. They always have such interesting nights here. A wide range of artists, a wide variety of shows. Sometimes it's a special screening of some unusual something, A lot of nights it's some interesting line up of artists and bands covering a large variety of people, sounds and sights to feast your eyes and ears on. And if you don't like the show- problem solved! They have excellent cocktails! and a whole separate room where you can step away from whatever was on the stage in a cute little area with some cool old film being projected silently with subtitles against the wall and a chill quieter bit of background music playing. Not into that either? Problem SOLVED! Catch some air in their little outdoor area. Lean against the rain and look at the night sky until some strange character comes by and says hello. Not into that? Sit your butt down inside and enjoy a snack like their delicious cajun seasoning french friessss. Not into drinking? Have a topo chico with it! All of that sounds dumb and you want to look at art? PROBLEM SOLVED. Pop into their bathrooms and get a special LA art exhibit made by the people for the people. Graffiti with its finger on the pulse.. or the toilet paper. You decide! If you're looking for a cool place to check k out, stop by this gem of a place in the Silverlake area. I made it out last night for a KCRW mixer event and had no idea what to expect before entering. The interior was quite charming, laid back and stylish. Further back was a nice sized open area with a stage, a small seating area, two DJ areas and a bar. Outside was a large well lit area with tables, benches and a small pop up record shop with some merchandise. My guest got some food and a drink which he really liked. I had some water which was fully accessible along the sides of the bar areas. Overall, I thought the place was really nice and the event was put together effectively. What a fun night with friends as we came to this place late in the night for a birthday celebration! It was walking distance so we walked on over after spending time at a nearby brewery. The line was not long at all and it was already packed when we got there. It is a very artsy establishment with good drinks, fun music, and a relaxing atmosphere. This would be a place we would often visit when we stopped by at our friends' residence. There is a dance floor and also an open area in the back where you could relax some more and converse with your party. Good times! read more

Pre-pandemic review that has been severely delayed on my behalf! Zeb, I miss the nights where the rooms where flowing with cool and interesting characters -- chill crowd both inside and out. Good music playing and even if there were a lot of people there, it never seemed super annoying and packed and it was almost as though you were bound to run into someone you'd know. Mood lit rooms and the wide open air just steps away amongst patio lighting and heat lamps. Parking kind of sucked, but that's why most would take a Lyft or Uber. I came to attend the ABBA Nights event on Friday (Feb. 13th). The bar has a nice patio area for mingling and relaxing. I went through the music venue doors around 10:00 pm. when the event started. I don't know where to start. This place is SUPER FUN. The two female dj's kept the night moving with TONS of ABBA hits and and Disco (70's and 80's). I counted 18 ABBA songs alone. If you're a TRUE fan of ABBA, check out ABBA Nights when they come to Zebulon, you won't be disappointed. The security was polite to me. The staff know how to make a night feel good. If you're reading this, I'm the super tall guy with the ABBA shirt on the stage. I can't wait till the next event. Worth the drive from my part of town to L.A. on a Friday night for this. If you're also curious, they allow anyone to wear anything casual. I wore shorts, because I knew it would get hot in there. The whole dance area was jam-packed. The stage was jam-packed too.
