Not impressed. I've worked with tailors in half a dozen countries and half a dozen US cities. I find that it's not uncommon for tailors to have reached a point where they're tired of / bored with the work of clothing alteration. It IS work, but it requires more than attention to detail. There needs to be a bit of passion in there, even when just darting a shirt or sewing cuff buttons onto a jacket. On my first visit to Edel's shop, I found him brusque and distracted. He didn't spend much time trying to pin the seams on the blazer I wanted to have slimmed. Picking up the jacket a week later, I found the price charged did not fit the quality of the work done. I'd asked for the buttons to be sewn on with extra thread, in an x-pattern. I'd called to repeat this three days before scheduled pickup. When I picked up the jacket, this hadn't been done. Edel's response was "yes, they're fine this way." Tailoring is hard work, and rent in SF is high. But the world is literally teeming with tailors, particularly across East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. I consider myself a polite and conscientious customer. I'm not "picky" but I do know exactly what I want in terms of quality and attention paid to the garment. Every part of my experience with Edel convinced me that I will not visit his shop again. read more

I suppose the most important thing for tailoring is them getting the fit correct. They did that. But, they are VERY expensive and the friendliness factor is minimal. $60 to have a jacket tapered/fitted. $40 to have a vest fitted. I understand they have to pay their rent, make money to pay themselves, etc...but it felt very expensive. They did get the job done. They asked to have 1 week for the work and it was done when I went back to pick it up. I would have be careful to decide if the value was there for me to use them again. Few people know that taste and style do not come naturally--you need someone with amazing tailoring skills that the clothes you wear fits you perfectly. I've brought in french cuff shirts I bought from department stores whose sleeves are either way too puffy and the shirts way too loose. Even though the neck size and the sleeve size and it's a "modern fit." I'm 5'6"/130lbs Asian--so buying off the rack unless I go to Gap Kids is frustrating. "Oh my gawd! This is soo fabulous!" Then I try it on and it looks like I just swathed a roll of fabric on my body. The same thing for jeans--fuck you True Religion for having your shortest inseam as 33" for men's jeans. Off to better brands. I also go thrift shopping and you know same thing--but what saves me to rock these out and the red carpets to be rolled out for me is Edel mad skills in tailoring. My latest work for him was a top wool coat (they don't make them like these anymore)I bought at a side shop thrift store in the TenderNob years ago for $13 bucks. Well the lining has ran it's course and it's time to modernize the cut. I bought my own patterned-expensive silk lining (and per his suggestion to buy three yards) and brought it to him and asked him to re-line this top coat and to also modernize the cut. He took in the shoulder and the sides. I supposed I could have a bought a new top coat from BR or wherever for the same price, but really, a coat tailor made for me with new silk lining--I feel like a goddamn rock star whenever I paired the top coat with my favorite jeans (courtesy of Edel) and mo'fo boots. He has turned things around at their promised time. Service is so friendly. You feel like you're at a clothes therapist. And when it is time to pick it up and try it on, bam, it feels like, "Yup, I fuckin' rule this world." read more

I've been here several times for hemming of pants and sleeves thought the work was good. So I debated writing this review. The reason I'm writing is the attitude Edel gave me when I pointed out that my skirt didn't fit properly after I paid $80 to get my skirt fitted. When I tried it on, it was fitted on one side and flared on the other. When I pointed this out, he kept saying that's how the skirt was made. Really? Well I'm no genius, but I'm certain that my skirt is not supposed to fit that way, regardless of how it was made. When I tried it on the second time, he didn't even get up from his sewing machine to take a look. Don't bring him anything complicated and you won't be disappointed. We've also used every downtown tailor on "the best" lists many many times but, honestly, Edel is the only one of two tailors in town I'd give 5 stars. I have been to Edel three times. First with a tux, then a suit, and today an expensive pair of jeans. I'm so pleased with my jeans, I'm compelled to write a review. You go in, change into your suspect garment, step out of the changing room, Edel will make a few chalk marks on the item, and you pay. Edel managed to alter my jeans one day ahead of schedule so that I could take them on vacation with me. I have tried to find a trace of alterations, but can't see any evidence. Hints for a successful experience that have worked for me: plan ahead and don't be in a rush. Only have Edel attend to you which may mean having to come back when he is in or back from vacation. Edel Claudio did a fantastic job for $50: sleeves perfect length, 4 days to complete and the reattached buckles found on the original sleeves looked like they were always there. You may have a good tailor for hemming pants (original or otherwise) but when you're dealing with expensive leather or wanting a custom suit, go to where you can justify the cost. read more

i too brought my bridesmaids dress here 1 month before the wedding because i read about their fantastic service and quality tailoring on Daily Candy. i wish i could say that the review from DC was accurate,but upon bringing in my dress Edel had me try it on- told me it would be no problem at all to make it fit (it was exceptionally large in the bust and waist) and told me to come back the following weekend. when i came back to pick it up (at the time he specified) i was greeted by a sign on the door that they were closed for the weekend. then, when i was finally able to make it back and pick up the dress- it didn't fit as i'd hoped-- it was still way to large in the bust and when i inquired about it once i tried it on he told me it was the best he could do with the way the dress was made. i spent half the night of my brother's wedding making sure my boobs stayed in my dress (it came close a few times). i wish i would have taken it somewhere else from the start. and to top it all off, all the alterations, which in my understanding were rather standard- came out to $80. next time i'll take my stuff somewhere else. he might be great with shirts, jackets and pants, but if you have a bridesmaids dress- opt elsewhere. read more

I had Edel alter my wedding dress, and he did a fantastic job! I had a designer silk wedding gown that needed a lot of work, and I only had 4 weeks before my wedding. Edel met with me without an appointment, and I was, at first, nervous because he seemed hesitant to do the work. (he was going on vacation in only 3 weeks, and it was a lot of work to take on for him) However, Edel agreed to do everything I asked, and he did a wonderful job at a very reasonable price. I brought my wedding dress here for some minor alterations after my to-be husband had a couple suits taken in here. When I went to pick it up, he had totally done the straps wrong -- in a way we did not even talk about. The second time I came back, the white dress had blue pen and pencil marks on it, as clear as day. Sloppy sloppy sloppy and with the most expensive and important garment of my life. Not to mention, he never once appologized for these major errors after I pre-paid in full. What a prick. read more

Here's the thing about Edel and his tailoring- I think it makes me thinner. Not because of his excellent craftwork, mind you, but because he literally makes my clothes smaller and I have to lose weight to fit into them again. Sigh. Which isn't always a bad thing. He recently repaired a very delicate strap flawlessly on one of my party dresses that blew out at a friend's wedding. He also just repaired the umpteenth hole in my favorite jeans and it blends perfectly- no unsightly patch. As for the pants issue, I'm torn- it took me most of last summer to fit into two pairs he tailored for me, but now that I've whittled those thighs down a bit, they're fabulous! read more

Very, very good tailoring, I went in to get a suit jacket/skirt taken in, and I didn't even realize that the sleeves on the jacket were too long as well...he has a very good eye, and will make your clothes fit perfectly. Even though his prices may seem to be on the higher end, you can be sure that he will not "ruin" your clothes...you can trust your expensive clothing in Edel's hands. I used to take everything to Edel, but I will be looking elsewhere now as the quality of the work has gone down significantly. Beware when Edel is not in town and his parents are taking measurements and running the shop, because the work gets sloppy. For the latest pair of jeans that I took to Edel, the measurements were not precise and the stitching on the hem was not even. I rely on Edel's expert eye to take measurements and get the fit just right, but for the latest pair of jeans that I took in, he wasn't there on site. The person in the shop didn't even bother looking at fit when he took the first measurement, and left the legs way too long. I told him they had been preshrunk, asked him to remeasure, and shorten them a bit more. When I got the pants back, they were still almost an inch too long, so now I'm going to have to make yet another trip to have them shortened again. My jeans were also not ready at the time promised, and I had to make a second trip back later in the day to pick them up. In the past, they also did a sloppy job on hemming the sleeves for a $700 leather jacket to a point where the cuffs no longer fit comfortably. I would not recommend taking anything valuable here as the level of work is just not what it used to be. read more

I am really picky when it comes to alterations, I feel like if i am going to pay a decent amount of money to get things done they should come back right. I know crazy thought right? I was disappointed in my last two experiences with this tailor. I brought to him a great pair of expensive pants and an expensive blazer that needed to be altered. Neither one came back in great condition. The pants, which were supposed to have an invisible hem came back so that i can see the stitching and not even just when i bend down to take a close look. The sleeves of the blazer had been slightly melted by the iron they used to put in some reinforcement at the cuffs of the sleeve. Also, when I brought this to his attention he told me it was supposed to look this way. Overall i am disappointed and sad at the quality of the alterations and the fact that two items i now own are damaged. read more

My aunt showed me Edel Custom Tailor awhile back; I brought in a new dress that needed to be tightened around the weights, adjusted on the shoulders and shortened a little bit. When I came back to pick it up/try it on it was perfect and exactly what I wanted. Since then I haven't taken my clothes anywhere else. I regularly buy clothes that need a little adjustments because I know I can take them to ECT and get them fitted to perfection. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

This guy was quick to get me in and out. I had a dress shortened and jeans hemmed. Apparently I have gotten shorter. Anyway, we gave good advice about length, and got right to the point so I could get out of there. My major complaint is that the sewing skills at this place are sub-par. I expected to get the dress back with the same edging, but it was given just a regular fold-over hem (and the sewing was not even straight). Basically, I could have done this just as well myself if I owned a sewing machine which is something I am certainly considering. This place is okay, I just wish I could find somewhere with more reasonable prices. Paying that much for a job that takes maybe 10 minutes is a little disheartening. read more

The girl who measured them had them too short at first so I had her extend the measurement. After I picked them up, I discovered that they had been hemmed at the first measurement! OMG I just left this tailor in tears. I brought him two pairs of pants that I shortened in order to make shorts. One was a denim pair and one was polyurethane, I walked out with them and looked once I got outside, to my horror I saw rip marks on the front and back of them. Like a cat had scratched them deeply and areas where the plastic was lifted off the backing material. I went back in the store and showed him he said "that was there" I was completely astonished, why would I bring shorts to hem there that had this kind of damage on them I asked him? He said you brought them in like that I said "I did not bring them in like that they were brand new pants I cut them into shorts and wanted you to have them" he kept arguing screaming he wouldn't even give me my $20 back for those particular shorts he kept accusing me of lying and then I realized hewas holding a pair of scissors and pointed them at me! I asked "what are you gonna do with those"? He screamed for me to get out of his shop, it was unbelievable it was like some crazy surreal dream. I said "you ruined these shorts he kept denying it and denying it lying to me. He couldn't even call me and tell me that they were ruined before I came in. He was completely gutless I said what and how could you do this? He said "why would I do it?" "How did I do it?" I said you may have ironed them they may have gotten melted or ruined in the sewing machine he kept screaming "get out get out get out" and I could not even yell anymore my voice was hurting I just left and threatened him with a yelp review and then I was going to sue him and then I looked at the denim shorts that he hemmed and they were a mess too. I brought in my own cotton that was the color of regular jeans thread, he said it not the right color that's not the right color and I said ok. Instead he used an orange which was not the right color at all this mustard was the right color. His stitching was curved and was completely lined up wrong on the denim shorts. The thread I had was called denim it was supposed to be the same color that they use for jeans and it is a mustards type of color anyway. I came back and I said I can't believe you did this and he slammed the door and walked out. I came to my car and sat there in disbelief that this had just happened. Please do not go to him he's a horrible tailor and he's an awful person I'm out $125.00 for those pants and $40 out for the two of those shorts that I was needing hemmed .Sometimes you have to take care of your health and stress level and this is not worth me getting any more upset about but if I can help somebody out there who values the things they bring into him to tailor then I'm glad to do it I have no reason to post a bad review unless it's really true. The fact that he could not say sorry,or admit was one thing but the fact that could not even refund $40.00 was completely unfathomable. He is a liar and will turn on you on a dime if you dare to question his bad work, this was not just bad work irt was one pair of shorts completely destroyed throught the front and back of them. read more

I have never been enamored about the execution of this tailor. The first time, a simple hem was needed. I asked for invisible, but it was the antithesis of invisible. The second time I dropped off a pant to get the waist taken out. Well they took it in, twice the width I had asked. I did not realize this until I got home as I was rushing to a party and was unable to try on my pant. However, when I brought said pant back to ask them to fix their error they said they were going to have to charge me! First, that's aggressive. Secondly, that's just bad customer service. I had to haggle them down from $30 to $15! The truth of the matter was that the owner was on vacay and probably could have handled the situation best, however I wanted the pants by the weekend to wear and did not want to wait two weeks upon the owner's return to handle the situation in a more amicable manner for myself. Never have I dealt with minions that provided no help whatsoever. For this type of service, I can no longer bring anything back here to be tailored. I'm huge proponent of helping local business in my CBD, but this one I cannot. read more

I've taken numerous garments in for both myself and my fiancée and have always had great service. They'll tackle any job, get it done professionally, quickly, and at a reasonable price. They've even adjusted work after I've changed my mind (i.e. they do what they can to keep your options open) after initial work. They're expensive and the work is not as good as what I can have done at my local cleaners for much less. I brought in three pairs of pants for shortening and was quoted one price. Later I brought a fourth pair and assumed the price on the fourth one would be the same as the first three, since they all required the exact same alteration. When I came to pick them up, I was told that the fourth pair was $% more than the other three, though I don't understand why. Furthermore, when I came to pick them up, I noticed that he hadn't pressed them afterwards. He said he doesn't press the garments he works on. No more, thanks. read more

I've had a three items altered by Edel Custom Tailor and I've been pleased with all the alterations. I apprenticed with a menswear master tailor when I was 16, so I know sewing craftsmen ship, but hate doing my own alterations. I'm short 5'5" with proportionately broad shoulders and a small waist, so everything must be tailored to fit - oh, and one arm is about 1/2" shorter than the other. I had a suit coat and pants tailored. The sleeves were done perfectly so my shirt cuffs peak out correctly and no odd bunching of the jacket lining, everything lies smoothly. The horizontal puckers above and between my shoulder blades were completely eliminated and the jacket lies flat on my back now. The pants waist, seat and hems were done exactly as I requested. Completed as promised in ten days at the cost quoted. Casual sport coat with functional cuff buttons required the sleeves be entirely removed, recut and reattached to spare the proportions of the cuff and functional buttons. I actually showed up with the same jacket in a different size and Edel advised me to return the jacket and get the next smaller size for a better fit and less tailoring. I immediately called the catalog company from his shop, ordered the smaller size and had him tailor the smaller jacket a week later. The waist still needed to be taken in quite a bit. I was happy with the sleeves and waist, but wasn't pleased with the finish on the inside of the 1/2 lining; I kept sticking my arms between the lining and outer fabric when slipping the coat on. I pointed this out to Edel two days after I picked up the coat and he fixed the problem on the spot, hand tacking the lining - problem solved. Completed in one week for the price promised. Had a pair of sweat pants that were 10" too long hemmed. I mandated that the original stretch stitch finish be used and the top stitched front seams maintained. The legs were cut down to the correct length, the proportion of the leg was recut to fit my height and they were done in one week for the promised price. Edel Custom Tailor is not cheap, but definitely value for the price. The shop is clean, easy to get to with occasionally unreliable hours, and I'll continue to go back to and recommend Edel to friends. read more

I've had so many tailors f*ck up taking in suit pants at the waist. Edel executed it perfectly, making sure the pinstripes were lined up, that the butt didn't pucker weirdly and that the pintucks were contoured to the body. He's also efficient, the store is clean, and the floors to the changing room and surrounding area are clean so that you don't mind taking off your shoes to try on your pants and walk out barefoot for hemming. Prices reflect the quality - it's fair, and definitely worth it if you're doing alterations to clothes you care about. read more
