This is a lovely place! I came here on a date, and everything from start to finish was perfect. All the staff from the gracious hostess, to the friendly waitress, to the fun man who took away our dirty dishes was simply wonderful. We had the weinerschnitzel and the rindsrouladen and both dishes were tender and flavorful. For dessert we had a yummy chocolate cake and an amazing baked apple with the most delicious cinnamon ice cream. It was one of the nicest dining experiences I've had in a long time. I had not visited Edelweiss in several years. When my wife and I planned to meet out of town friends near the airport I thought of Edelweiss as a good option. I was glad I did. We were warmly greeted into a very comfortable environment. The service was excellent and the food was exceptional. The array of menu choices was good. They were crowded when we were there, but we did not feel pushed to clear the table. All in all it was a very pleasant experience and we will be happy to return in the future. read more

My husband and I live very near Edelweiss but were reluctant to try it because we tend to think of German food as old-fashioned and heavy. Edelweiss totally changed our minds! We sat out in their biergarten on a beautiful Saturday night and had an excellent dining experience. We tried the sauerbraten and Edelweiss platter and found the food to be fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented. Sauces and gravies were used with restraint to enhance the flavor of the food. This is definitely a more modern take on traditional German food. The server (Stacy) was attentive and professional - even the busboy (Manny, I think) was delightful. Everyone was so concerned that we had everything we needed and that we enjoyed the food. The manager stopped by to check on us and brought us complimentary after-dinner drinks. In Chicago area for work and decided to find a good German restaurant for dinner. We decided to try Edelweiss. Wow, I am so glad we did. I had the soup of the day which was a creamy cauliflower soup that was wonderful along with the great german rye bread. My main course was a roasted half Duck and orange sauce with german fried potatoes and Red cabbage. It was all so amazing. I have a german grandmother who showed me what great german food was and Edelweiss meets the same quality and taste as my Oma used to do. All the wait staff were very friendly and Dawn Marotta was the friendliest of them all making us feel very welcome giving this visit that traditional german gemutlichkeit feel. I don't know what people see in this overpriced place..ya it looks nice inside big deal, i went there going on prices yelps got on there menu..when we arrived it was dead time and when i picked up the menu my jaw dropped.. For 1 the prices are totally diff from what they have here..the cabbage roll says 9 buks here,i almost shit when i looked on there menu and it was almost double 17 buks..perch the other person had was 11 here 17 buks at the place..so i ended up having the potatoe pancakes instead of the roll 10 buks cheaper.. Well let's get down to how bad it all tasted, i mean i'm not german but this was the most TASTELESS food i ever had..hey cooky try some grated onions in the pancakes if thats to hard put some onion powder in..they tasted like shit an for 4 little pancakes 3 inches round for 8 buks its a rip..soup wasnt bad though i dont like spinach the cream part was passable.. Now lets degrade the tasteless supposedly perch another tasteless entree..i dont even think it was perch cause perch has some flavor to it unlike this..some salt an pepper would have helped..then it shows a sandwich menu here no such thing there..it must only be for lunch or something.. I mean i been going past this place for years and finally decided to stop in cause of the menu here..well from now on i will just keep on going past it cause i will never return again..maybe if you like HIGH PRICED TASTELESS FOOD then this is your place but it aint mine... read more

Hospitality is outstanding! I love the old German atmosphere. We ate inside, but when the weather is nice, the outdoor patio looks very welcoming. Plenty of food and tasty main german meals. Live german music was nice, but some of it could have been louder and more entertaining. Maybe we needed to sit closer to the stage. We had an amazing time at this restaurant. We ordered das boot beers which made us feel like we were celebrating Oktoberfest in Deutschland! Kayla was a great server- good timing, went along with our silly antics. The German band was such a nice, fun touch to tie the whole environment together. I'm sure that there is good cause for the current 4-star rating on here, but our experience was ANYTHING but 4-star. Not even 2-star service. Horrible. The place was nearly empty, yet the service was horrible. The food was decent, but after getting past the chintzy decorations and ordering from the worthless and rude waiter, I couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant. I blew more than $300 on dinner, but yet I had to get our own drinks at the bar, and then had the waiter chew me out for it. Worthless. If this place goes out of business tomorrow, the dining experience in Chicago would be richer for it. read more

Very nice place. I'm Hungarian, German and Polish so I love German and European food overall and I went here with my parents before Christmas. The dinners and deserts are all amazing. Misleading advertising. I would not recommend this place because they cannot do the little things right. I came here because the Edelweiss website was advertising the restaurant as the place to be to watch the World Cup Final. They were not. All chairs and viewing areas were reserved. However, the large banquet room was empty and not set up to watch the game. I asked one of the employees where could we could watch the game if all of the seats were taken and she gave me that "oh well" smile. I asked why the restaurant would advertise as the place to watch the World Cup Final if there would be no place to actually watch it and she just shrugged her shoulders. I was livid. They could have accompanied at least 100 people in their banquet room (the one pictured on the home page!) by putting in 1-2 large TVs. There are other German restaurants in the area and I would recommend any of those before taking a chance at Edelweiss' Another way to look at it; they are advertising lunch and bar specials now. Edelweiss is one of the best Old World restaurants in Chicago. Although I usually frequent the bar, I have been to the restaurant section on a few occasions. The food is pricier, but that's because the portions are quite large. If you are not a big eater, some of the larger portions are easily enough for two. In the bar area, there are several great German beers on tap, including my personal favorites BBK Oktoberfest and Kostritzer. You can order half-liters, liters, and boots (2L), and the beer is always fresh and cold. The appetizers they serve are delicious, and perfectly complement the beer. During the summer, they have an outdoor patio as well, great place to enjoy drinks and food. Parking is very plentiful as well. Great food, great drinks, great service! read more

I usually only try to post positive reviews, but I can' t let this slide. I've been meaning to try this restaurant for 2 years and I finally got to try it this past Thursday. There was a group of 6 of us. My hubby and I arrived early so we grabbed a beer in the bar while we waited. The bartender was beyond unfriendly, ignoring us and waiting on her regulars first, she did this more than once, unreal. Our waitress for the dinner was equally unfriendly, her only smile came when she saw that we gave her a nice tip. The food was mediocre at best. The restaurant was very, very loud, so if you want to go somewhere with a group and be able to talk, don't go here, so loud. My husband and I had brunch @ the Signature Room last week for just a bit more money than we paid for this awful dinner. I will not be going back here, ever. read more

We actually just stopped in for some German beers. Anthony the bartender was very friendly. Can't go wrong with Spatan and Hacker Pschorr and a few Apfel shots. This was a wonderful, authentic German restaurant experience. The charm and the kitsch of the decor matched the Bavarian German expectations. The food here is 5/5 stars for sure. As is the service. The reason for my 3 stars is the uncomfortably hot dining area. Everyone at my table was sweating, and it's really difficult to enjoy your hot dinner when you're drenched in sweat. Everyone else around us was fanning themselves with menus. We were very disappointed with the food and the service. We ordered Wiener schnitzel spatzel and red cabbage. The Wiener schnitzel was served with a gravy; we are accustomed to lemon wedges, only. The veal and breading seemed heavy and not pounded thin enough; could have been a commercially prepared entre, the spatzel did not taste freshly prepared and the red cabbage tasted of some unsavory spice that did not combine well with the dish. The sides seemed reheated. We returned to edelweiss as we had previously been to this restaurant in November 2014 and enjoyed the same cuisine. Yet, we were repulsed by the apple struedel; soggy, possibly frozen. We didn't even risk trying the struedel again. Server portrayed a nonchalant attitude. Had a late lunch at Edelweiss to celebrate a birthday and a graduation. I made a reservation for 9, the lady who answered the phone was really sweet and asked if we were celebrating anything, so I told her. When we got there they had some balloons on the table, nice touch. Service was excellent, food was great, beer was good. They were out of Stiegl though. The Best German Restaurant I've been to. In fact the only gripe I have about the place is that it is across the street from a senior citizen center. I always feel the need to be on my best behavior because of the fact that I'm usually the youngest patron by at least 30 years. It is a Large place , clean and dressed up. It has an area in back for a band / German dude with a Casio Synthesizer (I'm noticing a pattern in Chicago's German Restaurants , I can see why David Hasslehoff is a rock god over in Germany) . It has a nice bar area up front with old school German dudes watching Football (soccer to us Americans) after work. The wait staff is friendly and helpful , the menu has standard German Fare along with a good selection of grilled standards like steak and chops. I've gotten the pate every time I've been there , it gets the job done , not a standout. The potato pancakes are good , standard but good. I've ordered the roast duck a few times , enjoyed it every time. Duck is really hard to get quite right and theirs is crispy and moist. The grilled stuffed chicken breast was raved about by my wife. I really enjoyed the Pork shank , my go to German dish. I cannot recommend this place enough , despite the hard grandmotherly looks you get from the other diners when your table manners are not up to snuff. read more

Met a friend there Thursday night for a beer & bite. Much to my horrifying dismay no sooner were we into our meal at the bar, I looked down to see a MOUSE under my bar stool brazenly looking up at me!!! I didn't want to make a scene so I told the bartender as calmly as I could. Her response "yeah...we have a lot of mice around because of the nearby cemetary but they really shouldn't be inside here". REALLY? I could no longer eat afraid of what lurked in the kitchen. She had the nerve to bring us our check....not even comping the food we couldn't eat. I had dinner two weekends ago at Edelweiss to celebrate my dad's birthday. Dawn and our server Matt took excellent care of us. When they found out it was our first time at the restaurants, they gave us potato pancakes (the best I have ever had, by the way). They had a great beer selection and we got several flights to try them all. Everyone enjoyed their food and the portions were generous. German chocolate cake for dessert was delicious. While I enjoyed the dinner I had here, especially the steak tar tar appetizer, I didn't appreciate the rudeness of our waitress when I tried to order a beer. I ordered a domestic beer and she said "Why don't you order one of our import beers?" Only import beer I'm familiar with is Heinekins so I asked for a Heinekin and she then insisted I order a German beer instead. Gee, lady. Why must you make a simple thing like ordering a beer complicated? It's not rocket science. Just bring me what I ask for without too many alternative suggestions and you'll get a better tip. Everything about this place is simply amazing. The environment is clean, warm, and welcoming. The food is outstanding. German food is my favorite cuisine and with that said, I enjoy trying new German restaurants for their food. I always find myself reverting back to edel Weiss because their food is the best German food I've had at any other German restaurant. I think the best part of Edel Weiss though, is their staff. You are instantly welcomed the second you walk in. Dawn is an extremely nice and friendly lady working there. My family goes to edel Weiss for each of our birthdays and every time we have gone, dawn has gone out of her way to make our birthday special. She is part of the many reasons we continue to come back multiple times a year. I would recommend this place without a doubt!! read more
