I got the beef noodles and order of the scallion pancakes as those got the most reviews and appeared to be the most popular dishes. I also love a good beef noodle dish and scallion pancakes. I had high hopes and boy was I disappointed. The portion is about the most mediocre I've ever seen. The beef noodle dish was $18 and what I got was basically a side dish. Like 6 slices of beef and 1 small bunch of bok choy. The char was pretty good but holy smokes did I feel ripped off. The scallion pancake was prob even worse because not only was it a ripoff at $10 for like 6 small pieces (prob made up 1 whole pancake), it was bland and oily. No scallion flavor at all. I have major regrets to the point where I'm actually mad which doesn't happen often. I would never purchase from here again. I get costs are high especially for food but I felt like I was robbed. This is my first time seeing that Woon had a second location. I was nearby this one and decided to check it out. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was plenty of parking in a parking lot (compared to the street parking from the other location!). I ordered my go-to beef noodle. I was a little disappointed in the thickness of the noodles, they were a bit thinner than I remember them being from the original location (and compared to photos I've seen other people take of them. The service was superior and the staff were super attentive and nice. In addition, they were very friendly and personable. The restaurant itself is very clean and open. Met a friend of mine in Pasadena for Saturday brunch at Woon. Both of us had been anxious to experience this location, and it was worth it. Noon at Woon on a Saturday will make you Swoon with culinary delight...if you are lucky enough to score a table and don't mind a little more noise than usual. You order ahead at the counter and keep your fingers crossed that you are able to score a table. Luckily, we were able to secure a two-top table with a bench and chair, among four or five tables with the silver "RESERVED" signs. Woon does not take reservations, but apparently you can call in ahead to secure your spot. This family-owned restaurant is quite welcoming. Light, bright, lots of colorful art and decorations, with an above average noise level at this fast-paced Chinese spot in a busy part of Altadena's restaurant row. We decided to share a few of Woon's brunch offerings: "Bacon N' Eggs" Fried Rice (vgo): House smoke pork belly, Napa Cabbage, Scrambled Egg, topped with Chili Oil Fried Egg and Chinese Chives. This dish was five star. The pork belly is incredible, seasoned to perfection with a hint of spice. The rice, cabbage and egg all balance out the heat. Perfect to share or indulge alone. Cold Sesame Noodles (v): Homestyle Chewy Noodles, Marinated Tofu, Pickled Cucumber, Sea Moss Seasoning Togarashi and Herbs. This dish was only average for my taste. The noodles were fresh and tasty but the tofu lacked a lot of flavor and wasn't memorable enough to try again. Not sure if it works as a cold dish for my liking. Bolo Bao w/ Black Tea Cream: A delicious pastry! The right amount of crispy outer crunch with freshly baked interior, almost biscuit-like. The black tea cream is spot on, reminding me of an English scone and cream. Although, this version of cream is less fluffy and more liquified, and not as plentiful inside to offset the ratio of bread to cream. A bit more cream would have made the pastry five star. Woon Milk Tea (v): House-made Milk Tea made with Bamboo Temple Black Tea, mixed with Oat Milk and Sugar. This is a fantastic drink. Full of color, flavor, foam and presented in social media-worthy fashion. Quite delicious and vegan-friendly, although I wish there was a little less ice cubes. Overall, my experience at Woon was quite solid. Not enough to quite push me to a five-star rating, but I would return to try other options on the menu aside from the Brunch offerings. The space is great, but can be quite noisy, especially on weekends with lots of families and strollers. The bathrooms are also well-kept and clean. Parking adjacent to the building or across the street at the pharmacy. Dropped by here since we were in the neighborhood and it looked good. From the reviews and vibe, it seemed like it would be a lot like Joy in Highland Park. Unfortunately, it's nothing like Joy. Parking wasn't too easy on a weekday afternoon. We had to park across the street on a residential street. But, hey, parking at Joy is a pain too. Maybe that's a good sign. We walked in. No line (unlike Joy). But the layout and ordering system is very much like Joy. They even have the cooler with drinks to the right when you walk in the door. Some of the menu items sounded similar to Joy, so we were pretty excited to give them a try. I went for the vegan tofu over rice and a side cucumber/tofu salad. My wife ordered the pork belly over rice and the chicken wings. We both also got a black cold-brew coffee. The total: $68.51. Oof. I think Joy is cheaper. Food came out quickly, just like Joy. The cucumber salad had baked tofu in it (rather than tofu skin), and the cucumbers were just chopped up into tiny pieces, rather than smashed, which is the way I prefer it. While there was supposed to be chili-crisp oil on it, it was actually pretty bland. Meh. Next for me came the (vegan) tofu over rice. It included some pickled vegetables, which kind overpowered the dish. It was a strange choice. I've had pickled vegetables with Chinese food before (my wife is from Hong Kong), but these kind of overpowered the dish. It also included some carrots, which I think were also pickled, giving the dish a sort of Vietnamese vibe, but not in a good way. It was pretty much all I could taste. Adding a little chili oil helped balance the flavors a bit, but not much. As a pescatarian, I couldn't try my wife's dish. But it was basically the same as mine, and she was just as underwhelmed. She said the chicken wings were the best part of her meal, but they certainly weren't amazing. In conclusion, the chicken wings were OK and the cold-brew coffee was delicious. I think this place is mostly catering to average white hipsters who come for the vibe, rather than people looking for authentic Taiwanese street food. The flavors are very interesting, the veggies are fresh pickled and it's not greasy, which I liked. We got the beef noodles, pork belly rice and the pork belly bao bun. Parking is small and shared so be prepared for that. The inside has traditional decorations and is just a vibe. When you get in, you order at the cashier and then go to sit at a table of your choosing. Water is self serve. I got the cucumber and tofu salad and the pork belly. Both excellent! Stopped by for brunch with my friend to check out what the hype over Woon was all about. Serving up homestyle Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisine, the restaurant is located at the Pasadena-Altadena border, with weekend brunch as one of its big draws. The space is impressively decorated with beautiful, green wallpaper and complemented with authentic antiques from the owner's family. How it works is you go up to the counter to place your order and pay, after which you'll receive your number to bring over to any available table for open seating. We ordered the following items: Woon Milk Tea, Beef Noodles, Five Spice Chicken Wings, and the Milk Tea French Toast. The Beef Noodles stood out as my favorite of the bunch, as you could really taste the wok char, or how the Cantonese like to put it, "wok hei". The texture of the noodles had a great chew to it, and the steak was juicy and flavorful. I was initially excited to try the toast but it was just alright, as there was a strong citrusy scent to it, which was unexpected and not necessarily a nice complement to the black tea custard and syrup. The service was fine, somewhat transactional and not particularly friendly or warm. But everyone we interacted with got their job done.
