I've been going to the west side Egg Roll King for years, so I tried the Kentucky location. I usually get the hot and sour soup, but I wanted a chicken dish. As I walked in, the cashier at the counter was wiping his nose with his hand multiple times. When he took my order he wiped his mouth with his hand. Then he scratched his forehead & wiped his nose with his hand again. A man from the kitchen walked to cashier's counter. The cashier handed him a stack of foldable paper food pails and stuck his hand in the top pail for a long time, as if to make sure I saw what he did. This was rude and strange. Anyone in food service knows to keep their hands clean when handling food and containers. It's possible that he applied hand sanitizer when I wasn't looking. The cashier was trying hard to get my attention and this didn't happen at the other Egg Roll King location. I got a double order to share the meal with others. When I got home, I told them what happened and they wouldn't eat the food. Without anyone to eat with, I put the meat, rice, and vegetables on a few plates and set them outside. Food is pretty good, but the shrimp fried rice used to have nice pieces of shrimp and if u paid extra u could get even bigger shrimp now they only give u tiny bite size shrimp they're so small u can't even see them and they don't give u extra even though you paid for it. Located in the warehouse/industrial area of southwest Indianapolis, we came across Egg Roll King. I checked yelp! for reviews and they came up mostly very positive, so we decided to give it a try. It's Monday, and there is a line at the counter. My wife is crazy about crab rangoon (which is what probably caught her eye as we were driving by), so we ordered that, along with sweet and sour chicken, and cashew chicken. The lunch specials come with fried rice, egg roll, and a choice of hot and sour soup or egg drop soup. Our order was taken quickly, and were given soup and our drinks. My wife had the hot and sour soup, and devoured it. The egg drop soup seemed a bit thick, and needed more flavor but was edible. The crab rangoon arrived quickly, and were huge. They were crispy but tore apart easily, exposing melted cream cheese with large bits of surimi (imitation crab). The crab rangoon were crispy and tasty, one of the best I have had and better than anything where I live. Our meals quickly followed, and my wife devoured her sweet and sour chicken. I think she was hungry. The fried rice was one of the best I have had for a fast casual meal. The egg roll was hot and crispy, and filled with chopped cabbage and other vegetables. It held up well when slathered in soy sauce. I wasn't too excited about the cashew chicken. The chicken was battered and fried, covered in a gravy-like sauce, and sprinkled with chopped cashew pieces. But for $4.99, I shouldn't expect much more. read more

The only reason I gave 4 stars is because they should have smaller containers & prices if you only eat so much like i do. Other than that this was my first time getting food from there. I just moved to this side of town and wanted Chinese food. It was the best chicken fried rice or fried rice period I've ever tasted! It was seasoned! OH MY GOODNESS! I'm definitely going back! Overpriced and paid more than we should have for gross food. The shrimp lo mein came with more pepper than shrimp. I have eaten Chinese food for 50+ years, grew up in NYC and ate in Chinatown often, so I know what good food is. Obviously, the Chinese offerings here in Indy are not on par with places like NY or CA, but most we have tried have at least been decent. This place was terrible! Rice was overcooked, egg rolls had been reheated several times and were almost burnt, and the entrees were lousy and very skimpy. Egg drop soup was just OK. Driving through the southwest side on Kentucky, you might see a kinda seedy-looking Chinese restaurant. You might think that this may be a diamond in the rough, or a great greasy spoon. Nope... it's a seedy Chinese restaurant with food to match the decor. The counter-service is nice and the people serve you with a smile, but the food is pretty bad. The friend rice is bland, the sweet and sour soup can be accurately described as peppery goo, and the lo mein is nothing special. There are a few high points that save this place from being relegated to the one star list. The fried potstickers are amazing. This place is disgusting I do not recommend eating here ever I went last night. I got twice cooked chicken with no mushrooms because I'm allergic to mushrooms he gave me my order there was mushrooms in it I didn't notice until I got home and put it on a plate and I am picking through it to give some to my kid and there was a bug in my food it. I eat here once a week. Some things are good and some are so-so. You have to know what to order. The hot and sour soup is the best in the city. The egg rolls are frozen and deep fried.
