On this stretch of Emerson everything is fast food, and then there is Egg Roll Number 1. Next to a nail salon, the outside doesn't appear that impressive but inside is always bustling. They have a variety of Asian cuisines such as Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese. The menu is huge so I suggest checking it out online before going so you already have an idea of what you might want. As far as quality of food, I have not had something I didn't like. My favorite is probably the pho ga (chicken pho) which has a rich broth and is easily customizable with all of the sauces they have available in house. You can take out or grab a seat inside. Even when it is very busy I don't usually have an issue finding a table somewhere. And food is usually out pretty quickly. My 2023 resolution is to eat at new-to-me restaurants. I went to California for Christmas and flew home on New Year's Eve. The Uber driver who picked me up was not from Indiana, so I asked where he liked to eat, and he suggested this spot. On a Friday, I showed up right at 5p and there was already a line. Clearly, the Uber driver has spread the word. After ordering at the counter, where I spent a pittance, I traversed the dining room for an empty table. I received a number to let the food-deliverers know where to bring my food. I watched the line get continuously longer while waiting for my food. The egg rolls came first. It's possible I have never consumed a better egg roll. I will forever bow down to the egg roll gods at this restaurant. The staff had the food ready for us once we arrived to pick-up and were friendly. However, the food wasn't as appetizing as I'd hoped. I've been here many times over the years and some of the food can be hit or miss. I really do love the Pho here and would recommend eating the Vietnamese food over the Chinese food here. I've been here a few times and it's one of my favorite spots in town. Their staff is excellent, always helpful, kind, and inviting. My first few times here I got the Pho Tai which is some of the best in the city. They also have plenty of condiments at the table to make it hotter or to enhance the broth (though the broth by itself is delicious). I'm also a fan of their Crab Rangoon, which are an excellent value (6 for $4.50!). Recently I wanted to try something new and went for their chicken lo mein which I also really enjoyed. I have been frequenting Egg Roll Number 1 since moving to Indy about a year ago. Having lived in the SF Bay Area where there are many places to get good pho, I have to say that Egg Roll's pho rivals many I've tried out west! Their beef broth for the pho is always full of flavor and even contains a thin layer of fat. This shows that they take the time, often hours, needed to boil the beef bones for preparing the broth. Their other Vietnamese dishes are also just as delicious and come in generous portion sizes! The ladies at the counter are also very nice and friendly and keep the line to order moving very efficiently!
