I've been here a few times and it's one of my favorite spots in town. Their staff is excellent, always helpful, kind, and inviting. My first few times here I got the Pho Tai which is some of the best in the city. They also have plenty of condiments at the table to make it hotter or to enhance the broth (though the broth by itself is delicious). I'm also a fan of their Crab Rangoon, which are an excellent value (6 for $4.50!). Recently I wanted to try something new and went for their chicken lo mein which I also really enjoyed. This is without a doubt my favorite place for Asian in town. They have been voted best Asian restaurant on Indy several times and there is a reason! This place is amazing! I mostly get the Pho which is out of this world, but they have a little bit of everything. From Vietnamese to Thai to Chinese. I feel lucky it is 5 minutes my house or I would have a long drive weekly to Egg Roll #1. Having lived in the SF Bay Area where there are many places to get good pho, I have to say that Egg Roll's pho rivals many I've tried out west! Their beef broth for the pho is always full of flavor and even contains a thin layer of fat. This shows that they take the time, often hours, needed to boil the beef bones for preparing the broth. Their other Vietnamese dishes are also just as delicious and come in generous portion sizes! The ladies at the counter are also very nice and friendly and keep the line to order moving very efficiently! Everything about this place is great. Never have we gotten something that we just did not like. Service is very pleasant and welcoming. Tonight I had Beef Mongolian and it was delicious. My son order Pad Thai. He gets that everytime and loves it. I have to be honest and say the hot and sour soup is so good. I usually don't like this type of soup but this is an excellent soup. I never thought I'd say this, but today, I found my new favorite place to order pho! Since I'm self employed now, I decided to take the opportunity to go eat lunch with my hubby. To my surprise, the line was short and moving quickly and food came to the tables fast. When you walk in, the menu is MASSIVE and very overwhelming, so I just asked for chicken pho. Within a matter of minutes, our food was at the table and was so TASTY! The fixings for the pho were pretty standard. Sprouts, jalapeños, noodles, chicken etc... BUT... the broth. Mmmm. Now that was the special part! The broth was so good. My husband laughed at me because I smiled with every bite I took. Alright Yelpers - I finally made the voyage to Egg Roll Number 1 based on your trusty reviews! I went in with two items on my radar: Pho Tai and Vietnamese spring rolls (veggie) I left with every single bite of my Pho Tai and spring rolls in my tummy (this meal was probably worth of two portions, but damn, why stop now?). The menu is enormous - a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese options. And the budget-friendly prices allow diners to dabble in a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I'd venture to say Egg Roll Number 1 is one of the tidiest Chinese restaurants I've been in - not that this factor has ever stopped me from stuffing my face. I highly recommend the pho tai piled high with bean sprouts, jalapeno slices and basil. It's a bit greasier than Saigon's version, but equally delicious. The spring rolls were a-okay, I'm thinking it might have been an extra-spicy batch of basil that through it off a bit for me. SKIP THIS PLACE. It's some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I got a meal at lunch time, which was busy. I almost could not find a place to sit. The counter service was mediocre. The person working the register acted Iike she was over it. The egg drop soup was good, but everything else afterwards was tragic. The rice was dry and undercooked, the sesame chicken was breaded terribly (clearly just something that was frozen that they microwaved. It was chewy and soggy. The egg roll was pretty disgusting as well. All I could stand eating was the soup. Wasn't worth the price of the meal. The ordering process is simple, with both a large overhead menu and takeout menus available for those of us who are more indecisive and need a few extra minutes to choose our salty indulgences. We ordered spicy Szechuan Vegetables, Tofu Hong Kong Noodles, and Vegetables Egg Foo Young and sat down to wait. We did not sit for long, as less than 10 minutes later our order was handed over the counter to our eagerly drooling faces. The hype is real at Egg Roll Number 1! This no-frills joint has been on my list for a long time, and a Vietnamese craving during quarantine was the push I needed. We phoned in an order for the Bun with tofu, Pho Tai, and a couple Thai Iced Teas. Order pickup was pretty simple; they had plexiglass shields protecting staff behind the counter and tape markings on the floor tp encourage customers to practice social distancing. Everything tasted spectacular. It didn't seem like there was any detriment to the quality or taste of our dishes, despite being carryout and an approximately 20-minute drive home. They even packed up all the pho accoutrements separately from the broth, so you could build your pho to your liking at home (bean sprouts, jalapeno, hoisin sauce, sriracha, meat on the side, etc.). Around 7pm on Friday the place was crowded, the line was at the door but moving very quickly. The lady that took our order was extremely nice. We got our number and went to sit down. While waiting for our food I could get a better feeling about this place. First, it is very clean, that is kind of surprising for a Chinese place. You have a lot of condiments at the table which you can use to enhance the flavor of your dish. All the dishes that I saw on other tables looked delicious. All the waitresses walking around were very attentive and nice, but he most important thing that I noticed, was the lack of that terrible fry smell that usually is associated with Chinese establishments. We left the place after about an hour and we were not smelling fry food at all! The food itself was delicious, I had a dinner special, chicken with vegetables and since I don't like Asian soups, I got both, crab rangoons and spring roll. My party had a thai dish, number 10 on the menu, don't remember the name, I think Bun. My dish was very good, hot and fresh, not to salty either. The only thing that was just ok was the spring roll. I got much better ones. On the other side, the thai spring roll that was part of the second dish was amazing. I also loved their crab rangoons, I could eat those all day long. More like dessert for me that savory element, but so incredibly good. We left very satisfied. The prices are reasonable. I'll definitely be back while visiting Indy next time. read more
