My family and I have three favorite breakfast spots for Sunday after church. This is one of those three and is just about tie with 1st. They have such great food, the staff is always on top of the customer and friendly. They have a large enough building to ensure that the wait times are not to long. One of my favorite breakfast spots in Ventura. Whether I'm with the family or with a friend, this place is always a good choice. The staff is always super courteous and friendly. Once you have been seated down and once you've ordered, you are given a single, delicious crepe to start your appetite going. I love that detail. As for food, my fave is always the florentine omelette. It has ham, spinach, mushrooms and Swiss cheese ( however, I always substitute mine with feta) and hollandaise sauce on the side. I don't care much for the sauce since my omelette taste fine just as is. By the way, if you don't know what kind of potatoes to choose from, go for their O'Brien potatoes, they're super tasty. There isnt much I can say bad about Eggs and Things...its a great place to get breakfast in Ventura. Its in a great location...right by the Target on Main Street... I think its partially the location that does it for me...when I lived in Ventura I lived about a mile away and so there was a wonderful breakfast a couple minutes away. Every time I am in here its very very busy...and they do a great job of making everything run smoothly. I usually end up getting something with two eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, ect. The ONE thing I want it my bacon crispy and they have never let me down. I do wish their portions were a little bigger. As I have said before its hard to screw up breakfast but its even harder to get it close to perfect and Eggs N Things gets it pretty damn close. :0) read more

How I wish I had chosen somewhere else for my birthday breakfast. I used to live in Ventura and have fond memories of Eggs N Things. Our waitress, Madisyn, was probably the worst waitress ever in my 47 years. Started off bad when I asked what kind of teas they have. She looked at me like I asked what kind of snake do you serve. Seriously, tea is not that weird. Our food came. My eggs were raw practically. We had to ask for some silverware, which she kinda tossed to us. Then right after receiving our food, our dear waitress informs us she's going on break, says another waitress will take over, and gives us our check. No how is your food (under cooked), do you need more water (yes), is that ketchup bottle empty (why yes it is says my daughter who wanted ketchup with her fries)? No one came to check on us. There were quite a few other waitresses around but we seemed to be invisible. Hmm.... Done with our meal, we got up. The manager asked how things were, and we explained our "lovely" dining experience. He genuinely seemed upset that we had such a bad time. He said he would talk with dear Madisyn. A good, solid four-star breakfast. I ordered the chicken fried steak, two eggs, hash browns and biscuits and gravy. My breakfast partner had two eggs, bacon sausage and hash browns with toast. All of the food was served hot and tasted very good. Before your main meal arrives they serve you an appetizer of a small crepe with some fruit on it...nice touch! Let me just say Yes!!!! It was a little pricey but this is a little brunch spot in downtown. There was no place to park, so expect to have to pay and walk a few blocks. The ambiance is cute. The food was delicious!!! I had crepes and seriously the best bacon I have ever had. My friends French toast was to die for. My Bloody Mary was not too spicy. Our server was Lashonda. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this place. I consider Eggs N Things on of the VCs "breakfast spots". IMHO, it's not SUPERB, but I often find myself taking visitors there for breakfast at least once. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the wait. The earlier you get there is definitely the better. My bf and I came here for brunch after reading some reviews on yelp. We were seated after a 5 minute wait and asked for coffee while looking through the menu. I was craving for something sweet so I ordered a waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream and the bf got eggs w/italian sausage. We both enjoyed their complimentary swedish pancakes but when it came to the food we ordered....Meh. I was really disappointed with my waffle. It was thin, small, very chewy, and lacked flavor. I tried some of my bf's eggs and italian sausage and eh.. as well. Maybe I really enjoyed the swedish pancake so it downsized my waffle? The disappointment in my waffle actually motivated me to buy a new wafflemaker that day! After we ate, we asked for the check and also noticed that the charged for the coffee at $2.50/cup! Stopped here on our way to Ojai. Enjoyed every minute! It was busy, but we didn't wait any longer than 10 minutes. The waitress was sweet and helped us make our decisions. I've driven by this place for what seems like years and the other day I decided to give it a try. I thought, besides eggs what other "things" do they have and I wanted to find out. When I first walked into this place it made me feel like I was somewhere else. Without a doubt it's a diner but not in an industrial, semi-fast food sort of way, like a Denny's or Carrow's. The décor, it's so unusual that it has to be seen to be believed. The space is occupied by booths as well as tables that seat at least four located on a raised area that's almost a separate room. There is a bar style table area near the kitchen if you're alone and you don't want a booth, just like in any old time diner. The lighting is bright exacerbated by the white and flower patterned wall paper. There are ceramic figures of chickens, sunflowers in pots and blue colored awnings or curtain like fabric above the openings that separate the room with the booths to that of the room with the tables. There are many more "Midwest country" style knick-knack's throughout the space as well as paintings on the walls depicting farm life and flowered fields. I can go on and on but it has to be experienced and may be shocking( like it was to me )if you're not accustomed to such décor. The service was good, Debbie the server was polite, friendly, and efficient (she must have refilled my coffee 3 times without asking, which I appreciated because I like drinking lots of coffee especially in the morning, which is when I visited). Also, there seems to be a lot of "regular" customers, who know each other and banter with the server. The whole thing played out like a scene in a movie. I ordered an omelet (Italian, $8.50). It comes with a few different side dishes. Also, they do something I've never experience, they make you a perfect crepe(on the house) as a sort of pre- appetizer. The omelet was awesome though I suspect it was really bad for me health wise but I didn't care because it was oh, so good. What struck me about it was the size (it was a big portion) and that it wasn't greasy, which is something I find with omelets made at those industrial semi-fast food chain restaurants. I felt like I got a good value and left satisfied. I will definitely come back and try the other "things" on the menu, which at a glance is typical of what you find at a diner but if the omelet was any indication, I'm sure the other "things" will be just as delicious read more

The first thing I have to say I notices was that we did not walk out smelling like a ball of grease. I HATE when you get into your car and you smell like you worked behind the grill all day. Food was delishes. I created my own omelette. The omelette was good. A bit too much spinach for my liking it also had bacon, cheese and mushrooms. Prices were not too high for the food but almost pricy. The beverages seemed on the higher side for me. Lots of walking space ...clean and staff seemed friendly enough. Service was good . Solid breakfast. Definitely not mind blowing food. Definitely not the most inviting or unique atmosphere, but the food hit the spot and isn't that what matters? I'm really not an omelete guy, but these were pretty darn good. They execute in a way where the inside of the omelette wasn't as runny as most places I have encountered. The bacon they used in the "eggs n things omelette" was cooked crispy and tasted right on. Also, service was prompt and refills on coffee were being made without me even asking. Overall a good place. Really enjoyed this mom n'pop diner. We started our day with breakfast here and were delighted to try their crepes with blackberry (or blueberry) jam on the house. The bacon was cooked perfectly and the pancakes were nice and fluffy. The service was excellent and both staff and locals were friendly. The booths and tables are very comfortable. The restaurant layout provides privacy while eating. The bright sunshine filters in through the entire wall of windows. Now the food... Incredible! This is one of my favorite places to eat. The food is really good and well priced. Weekends tend to get crowed on the morning but the wait is usually 15-20 minutes which is not bad considering the quality if food. Great corn beef hash!!! The banana pancakes are really good too. read more

Normally this place is wonderful! BUT, sitting in the back I notice all the cooks had no masks on. The only problem I had with this is that 3 of them had facial hair! I don't want hair in my food! The other problem was the 2 hostesses had long frizzy hair that were all over! I watched them do take out orders and the one girl had long curly hair that was all over drinks and inside the food bag!! I know they were working hard, but if servers have their hair pulled back and have masks on, DO THE SAME FOR EVERYONE!! read more

since our favorite place Roxbury Deli is now closed, we have been trying new places. This one was a disappointment for sure! First and last time there. Sat us at a table where we could here and see all the waitress chatter and gossip. Noticed a young red headed girl in the kitchen area who everyone that was employed there made sure to talk to. She was in the kitchen eating everything in site. No one said anything to her about what she was doing back there - just watched her take whatever she wanted and sat at the little bar area in the back and ate. Had to listen to the employees talk about that. She wandered around like she was the daughter of the owner/manager. Which she was. waitress took our order and when our food came - different server has a chili verde omelet, I told her that I had ordered eggs benedict. She took the place away and came back and literally threw the plate down on the table like I was being an inconvenience. The food was BLAND - how hard is it to make a benedict sauce and use real butter and lemon. Eggs were way under pouched almost raw. Potatoes were mushy and had a small piece of pepper in about 1/4 of a whole potatoe. No flavor on those either. Husband had chicken fried steak and scrambled eggs. Who the heck adds water to eggs! Oh of course when you are being cheap and cutting corners. You charge enough for this meal - you dont need to cut corners. The gravy was horrible. I had better gravy as a child when I mixed water and flour together and used it as glue! We spent 43 dollars on 2 meals - the owner/manager whomever he was - you had that costco shirt on that every middle aged man bought, should not bring your daughter to work. It really gives the place a weird vibe, your employees wont tell you this - but we heard it. I can't wrap my head around how places like this stay in business when the food is absolute crap, and so exspensive!!! read more

I have been going to this place for years. The staff is always so nice, I have never had a bad experience there ever. At lunchtime, I order the tuna melt - so delicious. It comes with avocado, and the bread is the perfect amount of crunchiness. And the curly fries-yummmm. Breakfast is good too, plus you get a free crepe with your breakfast. I usually order a simple fried egg and ham steak breakfast which is delicious. Worst customer service experience! The hostesses was unprofessional. No one was in line. I told the hostess I would wait for the booth inside as it was being cleaned. A few people began to enter. I waited outside to be called to be seated. Then a group began to form and I was completely by passed. The hostess seated someone else in the booth I had been waiting for outside. I told her, you sat them in the seat I was waiting for, she said they called ahead. I told her so did I and they said they do not take reservations it's first come first serve. She then ignored the fact of what just happened. The hostess did make eye contact with me while seating the other individuals. My husband suggested we come here when we were staying in town for the night. He remembered being at one in Hawaii and loved it. Seating didn't take too long, although there was a line. They were very accommodating for the booth we requested since we had our son with us. Service was fast with multiple servers checking on us almost immediately. Our food took quite a while because they were so busy, but they were bringing out free crepes to all the tables in light of this. I thought this was a courteous touch. The food was excellent, with the exception of one dish, but eh, it happens now and then right? It was the spanish omelette I believe and was just soggy inside as though canned vegetables had been used. I don't recommend this particular dish, but everything else was wonderful; my husbands omelette, my son's pancakes and eggs, and the coffee was good. A waitress did spill a full glass of ice water on me, and I ended up sitting in icey wet clothes for my meal but again, these things happen and the poor girl was so apologetic. Being a sucker for complimentary things, I wanted to try this place out for their complimentary Swedish pancakes - with purchase of a breakfast meal. Walking in the restaurant, it gives a modern feeling, but also an interesting feeling. One wall contains a mural picture that epitomizes Ventura, while the rest of the restaurant is decorated with 'barn-like' features. The 'barn-like' features sets a mood and feel behind the restaurant, but the mural being there also sets a different one. Kind of peculiar, but not drastically important. Decorations aside, the service was pretty prompt and courteous at first. The server that replaced my initial server had an outward appearance that she didn't want to work. Maybe it's just an off day for the server. Food-wise, I went with an early bird special and a coffee. For the meal, I had a biscuit with the "2 Egg Omelette w/Bacon Sausage, Swiss Cheese, Potatoes". To be fair, I should have expected that at an early bird special price, the food wouldn't come out as exuberant as a meal that was full priced. But what I didn't realize was that the early bird special meals were geared more towards a senior-audience. I only realized this upon receiving the food and I merely chuckled in my mind for not realizing it. For the 2 egg omelet, it was definitely an omelet where it's a layer of beaten eggs that wraps around the ingredients. The only gripe behind this is the cheese used. Instead of shredded swiss cheese, it was a slice of pasteurized swiss cheese inside and on top of the omelet - which was a bit too much cheese for an omelet of that size. The sausage was sliced into small circles and placed inside the omelet forming two columns from top to bottom w/ two pieces on top. It's a very basic omelet and definitely you get what you pay for. I ordered the potatoes to be hashed and fried on both sides, but it only came out fried on one side with the other side left completely uncooked. It was also a bit more oily than other hashes I've had so I did not particularly think it was nice. The side that was cooked was definitely cooked nicely however. The biscuit was pretty dry and doesn't hold a candle to other biscuits I've had before. The butter served with the biscuit was also pretty solid and not spreadable onto the very crumbly biscuit. I took a knife to it and it basically required a solid push to cut into it. Lastly, the complimentary pancake. The pancake came out first despite me thinking it would come out with the meal itself instead of by itself. Despite that, I thought the pancake was pretty good. It's thinner than the traditional American pancake and also thinner than a crepe. I have never had a traditional Swedish pancake before, but I thought this one looked pretty similar (based on google images). Although, I don't think I would really want to pay to eat five of these as a meal. All in all, you get what you pay for with the early bird special meals, because I did notice other meals looking more filling/elaborately plated and they were full priced. The food wasn't terrible, but just a-ok. I wouldn't mind another try in the future. read more

Have seen this place so many times but from the outside I had no idea it was so big or so nice! We really enjoyed the menu and the food was good. We'll be back for sure! We split the pancake sampler and it was plenty for both of us! Good bacon, eggs over hard cooked perfectly, and the pancakes were very good- tasted scratch made and not the horrible box mix that so many use. The service was great and friendly folks were working!
