This is one of my favorite breakfast spots when we come to Chicago. This place gets busy and it's easy to taste why. They call their food urban comfort food and I couldn't sum it up better myself. My particular favorite is the breakfast poutine. Hot crispy fries topped with a fried egg and sausage gravy. Do yourself a favor and add bacon. Did I mention the cheese curds they put on the poutine? Lightly battered hunks of delicious cheese, fried to make them puff up like heavenly cheese clouds. The staff there is friendly and prompt. My boyfriend ordered delivery from them this morning. He got an omelette, and I got the BLT, side of fries. First, the soup doesn't come with the sandwich unless you specifically ask for it (so they advertise a cup of soup with the sandwich, but the small print claims you must request said soup in writing when ordering...what?). Upon receiving my meal, I open the cardboard box to reveal a pile of bacon, lettuce and tomato. No. Bread. Really, Eggys? Do I have to ask for bread for a sandwich, too? He attempted to call the restaurant but no one picked up the phone. We won't be ordering from here again. Extremely disappointing. Eggy's Diner is tucked away in a surprising nook just north of Maggie Daley and Millennium Parks and east of Michigan Avenue by Mariano's. It's faces the rather isolated grassy courtyard of the surrounding skyscrapers making it feel like a community joint rather than a tourist trap. In fact, my friend informed me that she's been able to come to Eggy's Diner and avoid the crowd of popular downtown events. Eggy's has large front windows, high ceilings, and a fun but industrial-like decor. The employees were all friendly and timely. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. There was half a chicken (with the bones) on top of my waffle. It tasted delicious - the crispy batter and skin and the juicy meat inside. It was a pain to eat around the bones especially since they were all attached to one another. It understand the merits of cooking chicken with the bones, but it would have been nice to pick up a leg without having to amputate it first. I was stuffed by the end of my meal but momentarily considered a milkshake. They seem to have delicious ones. The server explained that they are all large and that made me decide against it. My husband and I were in Chicago for a long weekend and tried this restaurant after attempting to go to Wildberrys and finding an hour and a half wait. We were able to get in line online for Eggy's and enjoyed a nice walk over. We were definitely not disappointed. I ordered the green eggs and ham, partly because it's my two year old's favorite book but mostly because it sounded delicious and it absolutely was. I was a little uneasy at first, my dish came with grits and my husband's with sausage gravy (he got the breakfast poutine) and since we live in the south I wasn't sure if it would measure up. However, there was no problem. Grits were cooked perfectly and my husband's poutine had plenty of flavor. We both ended up adding hot sauce to our dishes but we generally like a little more spice than the normal patron so this wasn't an issue. Would definitely recommend the diner to any of my friends visiting the area. read more

Not sure if the chef is also a cheesehead but if not, he should be given automatic residency. They are absolutely perfect. So much for my summertime diet... Had a chance to come by for the first time recently, fully knowing what was in store for me. Yes, it is a small neighborhood diner that specializes in breakfast and yes, it was a Sunday. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, how does anyone have grand illusions that it would be anything other than a madhouse on Sunday? I mean, come on!! You gotta do it like a pro - we put our name in and took a leisurely stroll through the park until it was time to be seated. I really like what the restaurant has done with the interior. The decor has a very organic feel to it; not flashy (uh..besides the gigantic freaking arrow over the bar, who made that decision?!) but thoughtful and unique, just perfect for starting out the day. Our waitress did a great job balancing our needs with those around us, considering the foot traffic. She was knowledgeable about the menu, had actually tried the food, and had recommendations at the ready. Perfect for me, as I'm a newbie to this place. I soak up coffee like a sponge (especially Intelligentsia) and there were times that my coffee went empty for a time until she returned, but then again, I'm downing this stuff in a couple large gulps. Peter and the Wolf. That's all that you need to know. Get that and you won't come away disappointed. I don't know what else is on the menu but after that dish, I don't think I will ever need to. This has to be the most perfect breakfast dish ever put together. Pastrami, carrots, eggs, potatoes, fennel. The flavors compliment each other perfectly, and as much as I tried, the portion was so large that I couldn't finish it. The chef did an amazing job with it and I'm getting hungry just writing about it. So, I've read the mixed reviews but my first experience there was top notch. The worst turkey club sandwich I've ever had. This was listed as a "signature" item and looked nothing like the picture displayed on the screen. It came out as a complete mess with everything falling out. The sandwich picks did not fit the entire sandwich to hold it in place. I also added avocado and they weren't added in the sandwich, instead they were just placed in the center of the plate like a garnish. If this place can't even make a simple sandwich, I definitely do not want to try out their other dishes. Your better off going up stairs to Mariano's and grabbing a sandwich from their deli section for less than half the price. When other breakfast places a few blocks away have long lines, we've been able to get in here. Popped by for lunch and ordered breakfast because: 1. diners do breakfast best, and 2. how do you screw up breakfast? Well, they did have a decent breakfast menu but they managed to feed me a tasteless, yet caloric, meal. I ordered sausage and gravy with two eggs, sunny-side up. The sausage and gravy were bland. Super bland, even with half a shaker of salt. The egg whites were runny, not just the yolk. Disgusting. Service was fine - as you'd expect for a diner. And prices were reasonable. Been back to Eggy's a handful of times since opening day. Each time my boyfriend and I go, it seems they are out of something on the menu. Nevertheless, we've enjoyed our meals and continue to go back. For breakfast, we've tried the Green Eggs + Ham, the Garden Omelet, and the Benedict, all of which were tasty. However, I thought the Green Eggs + Ham was too mushy and needed some extra ingredient for texture. My boyfriend ended up eating that, and I ate his omelet. I really enjoyed the omelet, and I'm not even a big egg person. So far, my favorite breakfast item is still Peter and the Wolf. His is the Benedict. On our most recent visit, I had the Slow Roasted Pork Sandwich (essentially a Reuben), and my boyfriend had the Whitefish Sandwich. The pork Reuben was rich and tasty, but the bread was soggy and soon ripped, which made for a real mess. The Whitefish Sandwich was also tasty (seemed sort of like an upgrade on McDonald's Filet o' Fish sandwich), but my boyfriend ordered fries and instead received a salad. When he told the server, the entire dish was taken away rather than him just bringing back some fries. Eventually, the sandwich, salad, and fries made it back to the table. I also had the salad, and it was nothing special. Service can be a bit spotty, but for the most part, everyone is kind and attentive. It'd be nice if there was one breakfast and one lunch special every day. Additionally, I hate the website; it should be updated now that the restaurant is open. We were there on a beautiful spring Sunday around 10:30, so I expected there to be a wait and was pleasantly surprised it was only 30 minutes. It was really nice outside, so the wait was enjoyable. The restaurant is also located across from a little dog park, so there was some entertainment while we stood around, too. My husband and I shared the chilaquiles with chorizo and the breakfast poutine, both of which were FANTASTIC. Ever since we went to Toronto several years ago, we've been obsessed with trying poutine whenever we find it in the U.S., so we couldn't miss out on this version. It definitely did not disappoint! The sausage gravy was delicious, and the cheese curds were the best cheese curds I think I've ever had. Big and melty and tasty! Fries were great, too, and the eggs were cooked to perfection. The chilaquiles were great, too. It's hard to compare to something as fantastical as the breakfast poutine, but they also had great flavor. There was still a little crisp left to some of the chips, which I really enjoy, the chorizo wasn't overly spicy, and there were thinly sliced fresh jalapeo slices on top with sour cream. So yummy! Both portions were very generous as well. I ordered a glass of their fresh orange juice (which was actually fresh!) and my husband had a peanut butter and banana smoothie that he really enjoyed. Service was quick and courteous, but you didn't feel rushed to eat and get out the door. The worst part of our meal was our seat. We were somewhat in the middle of the restaurant at a small table for two, which was super close to another set of tables put together to seat 6. It was like they were just desperate to squeeze in another party of two since it was busy. This obviously wasn't a deal breaker - I just felt like I was too close to the other party seated next to us, and we couldn't move the table over because we were right next to a main traffic route for the servers. I've been to Eggy's a handful of times, and I really want to fall in love with the place, but I just can't get there with the food. Eggy's is the perfect location and brunch spot for all the apartment buildings in Lakeshore East. It's right next door to Mariano's and perfectly nested in the center of the park area. Inside, the atmosphere is awesome. I love the rustic wood feel, and the staff is incredibly friendly, although a tad slow. So far, I've had the Eggy's benedict and the egg sandwich. The Eggy's benedict is pretty delicious. My biggest issue with it is that the meat is just SO SWEET. It's overpowering and little too sweet to really be able to eat the full meal without that flavor just taking over everything. The egg sandwich is also pretty tasty, but again, there's something about that fig spread that is just too sweet. Maybe it's a personal thing in that the sweet items on the menu sound really appealing to me, but once I take a bite of my food, it just doesn't seem to have the right balance with the savory aspect of brunch I crave I feel should be balanced appropriately with the rest of the meal. I know I'll be back to Eggy's for multiple more meals. It's just too convenient not to go! However, sadly it only get a 3 out of 5 stars for my experiences to date. read more

The Peter and the Wolf is a very unique dish, but still would appeal to a bacon and eggs palette. I loved the mix of the pastrami, potato hash, and fried eggs. I'm also a huge horseradish fan. The Verb omelet is also a solid dish. The chile peppers and queso flavor the whole dish. All of us were very satisfied eaters. The wait staff was very friendly and prompt. I've been here twice, about two months apart on my business travel to Chicago, and I really love Eggy's. Found it on Yelp searching for "organic breakfast" and found the food amazing (even if you're looking for less than healthy - but I did see someone order a chicken sausage and Kale smoothie, poor fellow) and the service upbeat, responsive, and consistent. First visit was a crowded Sunday morning this summer and I got a seat at the crowded, but fun, counter. other guests were congenial in the tight space and I was even able to talk the family next to me into sharing my cheese curds (omg) since I would have felt a bit guilty eating the entire order, and a full breakfast, on my own. There are a lot of things I'd like to try on this menu, and I look forward to returning for lunch. Second visit was just last week, and on a Monday AM not nearly as busy, but the same great service. Had the counter to myself for a while, ordered the Eggs Benedict with corn waffle and pulled pork. Truly amazing, one of those things I would eat weekly, even daily, if I lived close by. I found the prices to be reasonable for the creativity, quality of food, location, and service. Not "cheap", nor is it expensive, you get incredible bang-for-buck at Eggy's. Food was pretty good but nothing to write home over. The chicken and waffles was very good. They gave you a breast and thigh (not exactly half a chicken but oh well). While it had a good amount of meat the chicken could have used more flavor. They were also a bit skimpy on the amount of syrup and the plate was far too small for the dish. The biscuits and gravy were mixed. The biscuits were crispy, flaky, and very flavorful. However, there was far too much gravy and it didn't have much flavor except for the copious amounts of green onions they sprinkled on top. Wildberry nearby is far better even after factoring in the long wait. The waitress was terrible because we were a party of seven and so she was able to automatically give herself a 20% tip. read more

2.5 stars, mainly because when I got my breakfast (cornmeal French toast) it was actually very good. The service is horrific. Granted we were there on Sunday at 11am, but the hostess was rude, unhelpful and obnoxious. Our server really couldn't have cared less about us. We had to ask another server to send him over and while he kept us waiting for 15 mins, when he came back was annoyed with us asking questions about the menu. The cashier was just plain nasty. Side eye and everything. We started to wonder if the theme of the restaurant was to be rude to the patrons, like Ed Debevic's...? If so, then I should change my rating to 5 stars... The food was good, but it took so long to come out (and even though the place was full, there aren't that many tables), I'd actually forgotten what I ordered. But the French toast was crispy outside, nice and soft inside and I think the cornmeal is a clever play on it. Stopped into Eggy's last Friday after reading about the bologna sandwich, because if there is one thing i love, it's a great fried bologna sandwich. I was greeted & seated promptly, excited to get my sandwich. However, once looking at the menu I was distracted by the all-day breakfast. Typically diner breakfast fare wouldn't grab my attention, but the items were anything but typical. Thoughts of my fried bologna quickly vanished and I ended up ordering the "Green Eggs & Ham" dish and a fennel ginger float. This dish was delicious. The tomatillo sauce was flavorful, and when I thought it might be too spicy I would get a bite of fresh cilantro to balance it. The grits in it added a great texture to the baked eggs, too. It was simply delicious, my plate was wiped clean...as was my glass from the fennel ginger float. My server, Katie I believe, was very friendly and attentive without being overly intrusive. Despite dining alone after the lunch rush, I felt very welcomed and comfortable there. I will be returning to Eggy's to get that fried bologna sandwich, but it will be hard to resist getting the Green Eggs and Ham again as I am already craving more of it... read more
