The bagels here are bagels. Which isn't a bad thing. But they really are just bagels. They do some creative stuff with them, though, and that's pretty neat. Pizza Bagel is easy, but "Thintastic Chicken Pesto" is probably not something you'll find elsewhere. The earlier in the day you go, the fresher your bagel will be. My wife got the last hashbrown bagel at 2pm and was disappointed. My plain bagel was just fresh as the driven snow, though. But the real awesome thing here (buried the lede again, Brian) is that they serve Caribou Coffee! If you're an old Midwesterner from way back like me, it's a nice taste of home. Ya sure! Dunno if the 80s tunes are a regular thing or just for today, but we were groovin!

Yesterday's company meeting was my first experience with Einstein's bagels. Wow they have sold me on being the best bagels in the area. As an Italian Jew and vegetarian coming from the east coast I'm always looking for the best bagels and real Italian food. In my opinion Einstein's is the king of hill and we can't wait to visit and buy their offerings for ourselves.

This former Noah's Bagels has switched flags if not exactly flagships. It's an OK joint to grab a dozen bagels to go, and the standard varieties & shmears are up to brand standard. In a disappointing twist, the recently-acquired Kettleman Bagels that had expanded the available choices to include boiled bagels have since ceased to exist entirely. This particular shop has limited seating, a crowding problem compounded 9 months of the year by its easy proximity to Wilson High School. The customer service is --on the whole-- pretty blase, and while some employees do shine, the overall atmosphere is a little rudderless (for instance, I saw one employee take her lunch break by going next door to Pizzicato, which she brought back to the breakroom --certainly no crime, but not the kind of message you'd normally be witness to in a more tightly-managed emporium). As for the menu, stick to bagels & shmear; the sandwiches are lacking, and while the thought of a Chicken Cuban Panini or Turkey Sausage egg & cheese might sound really mouth-watering in your head, the actual results are a little on the bland side.

A bagel sandwich shop vs bagel bakery. Not a place for a traditional toasted bagel and schmere.

I love their food... when I actually receive it. Multiple orders through grubhub. Always missing items ( hash browns mostly). I'm done!

Bernstein's is a popular spot - having arrived at the opening time we felt lucky to secure a table. Here is what we ordered: bagel and lox, garden bagel and raisin smear bagel; as well as coffee. Everything was so good that even the picky eater amongst us had no complaints. We also enjoyed conversing with other patrons at Bernstein's. Having quickly deciphered that we are visiting from out of town (probably by overhearing us talk - the tables are very close together) they immediately made us feel welcome and recommended places to visit around Portland. We usually don't talk to strangers, so being pulled into a friendly conversation was a different kind of experience for us, but the one that we enjoyed with gratitude. Overall, this a great breakfast spot!

We happened to find this spot along the way, and the bagels looked really promising, so we had to stop. We grabbed some plain bagels, which were tasty and good flavor. I also ordered a bagel with egg, but that one kind of threw me off. I'm not a fan of spongy eggs--they always feel a little fake to me . That said, I was hungry, so I still ate it. Overall, it was a good stop and definitely satisfied our bagel craving before hitting the road. I'd come back for the plain bagels, just maybe skip the egg next time.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd give a Portland bagel five stars…read more A few things to note here: 1. Oregon is a miserable state for bagels. Arguably the best in the genre here exists in Hood River, and it's about par with Northeast supermarket bagels or the British Columbia approximation of a Montreal bagel. It's fine, but far better than the bagel-shaped rolls of white bread you'll encounter here. 2. Bentley's is in a neighborhood dense with bagels, but light on good bagels. The names of its bagel-making neighbors are familiar to the locals, but they're also a big part of the reason why expats go out of their way to travel across town and wait in lines for bagels that might be passable replicas of those they remember. My family is from New Jersey, which has its own (albeit unlauded) bagel culture entirely, and has spent more than a decade here lodging bagel complaints. Their last straw was a place in St. John's that moved to the art museum and then to a place by the Widmer brewery that sort of made a decent bagel, but charged about $3 for the privilege of eating one. Not with cream cheese, not with lox or whitefish--$3 for the bagel itself. Sirs, you can go fuck yourselves with that level of extortion for what's essentially a Shop-Rite+ bagel. Bentley's has been much more reasonable and consistent. In a town that considers boiling a bagel an artisanal option and not, in fact, a default, Bentley's gets its chewy exterior and density down. While I'm slightly disappointed that the dough lacks some of the complexity of its back-east contemporaries--especially on a coast where the tang of a sourdough is approached with such pride--Bentley's gets the consistency of its bagels down. It comes down to sound fundamentals: Bentley's makes only eight varieties of bagels, but includes right-coast vestiges like salt and onion. More importantly, though a single bagel is still $2 (slight sticker shock from back east), that gets into the buck-and-change range quickly when you get a baker's dozen for $21 (roughly $1.60 per). I haven't gotten the cream cheese or lox here because I like making life as difficult on myself as possible. The best cream cheese I've found here is in Hillsboro. The best lox and whitefish? Astoria. So if a bagel spot is going to be out of my way anyway, I may as well start the weekend picking up a bag on 21st street, hitting 26 for cream cheese, and popping up to Astoria for a room for the weekend. After nearly a decade and a half in this state, Bentley's has helped my family shorten the bagel map a bit and given us the best option the Portland metro has to option. Before you give up on bagels entirely and start believing things like "Hmm, maybe biscuits and gravy ARE worth my time," pop into Bentley's on a quiet Sunday morning and try it for yourself.
