Food~One of my best girl friend (that's a big foodie like me recommended we do burger week) and, I! It was new thing to me so I was super excited about the burger and, the experience. We both got the Blackberry Bramble Smash Burger (of course blackberry compote, goat cheese, and arugula). She thought It came with jalapeños but, It would totally make it even better but, it was still a delicious burger. We also got a small fry (3 people could share it). Service~It was a very nice guy off to the side taking orders (where you could order different beers on tap) Ambiance~It's located in a strip mall on Powell (lots of other food carts right in the middle of everything). Very relaxing (but, it was 2 bees that swear we had honey on us a little annoying but, it didn't stop us from enjoying our food and the outdoors). It's plenty of parking and seating. I spoke to few people and, had a decent conversation for a few minutes. It's still burger week until the 21s (check it out)! This place is retro, shabby, comfy, and delightful. Here in the heart of the Oregon craft beer scene, this place is the flagship of all things sold that come in a sealed container. Thousands of options here in one gigantic marketplace, and something for everyone! The marketplace itself is quite dated. Yet it is eclectic and quirky. It is welcoming and irrefutably very memorable. There is a dedicated area to serve beer on tap with a list of about 12 options and then there is a restaurant with a limited menu. Mostly things like burgers, sandwiches, and other common pub fair. There are vegetarian options available. When your order is ready, they use an overhead mic that is resemblance of something that you would hear over the loudspeaker at an 80s rollerskating rink. On site, there are bathrooms and areas for seating that include bar tops, high tops, and even a couple of comfy couches. There is an outdoor patio that is very inviting during the warmer months of the year. Ultimately, this is an incredibly impressive presentation of beverages. Perhaps even something that some people would consider a museum of sorts. Either way, there is definitely choices for everyone, and this is an establishment that can't be missed. Yes, you can visit the other location on Powell, but nothing will ever match up to the original location here in Multnomah village. John's Marketplace may have been the best beer store I have ever seen. My wife and I were in Portland, and they took us to the Mecca of malt and hops. There was every beer you could think of in these expansive coolers. They even had a kiddie cocktail for my wife (Even though it is really a Shirley Temple) We ordered a draft from the extensive tap handles and my sister and I split a Rueben and the cold pastrami sandwich. Both were excellent and the bread on the cold sandwich was a perfect pairing, with the whole grains and everything. My brother-in-law is vegetarian and got a grilled cheese sandwich, with local cheese and he really liked it. We also got about 10 beers to bring home and sample for the evening. The service was great and food came out pretty happy and all the guests seemed happy with their beverages and food. read more

Well...we finally made it. Originally we were going to meet friends at 5. And it was a BEAUTIFUL sunny spring day. But then we rescheduled for 7...and I miscalculated the COLD lol. I DO so wish they'd have patio heating at the seated area outside. It would have been great. If you're looking for Beer or Cider, you CANNOT beat the selection or prices. I asked for Wayfinder Jaws of Damnation and BOOM yes we have it!! Of course we have it. Awesome. Sauce. The staff is incredibly friendly and kind. The food options weren't that great. While lots of people list the food carts ACROSS the street as options, they weren't open and we just hung out and drank. If the weather wasn't so cold it would have been so much better. AND if we ate. But it was great and I can't wait to be back when it's a bit warmer. read more

This is one of my favorite local spots to grab a Smash burger and a brew. Not to fret if you can't dine there though, they also take to-go orders over the phone. The food and service is no nonsense and straight to the point. Inside you'll find people who are excited to help you with selecting from what might be the widest selection of beer and wines in the multnomah village area. Seating at the bar, at tables inside, or outside on their "deck". This spot is a happening place to grab lunch or to meet up with friends. The pastrami sandwiches are pretty fantastic too. There is a parking lot right next to the building and you can even order kegs here! We're fortunate to have such a place in town! read more

What a brilliant concept! My husband had been raving about this place for months and when I finally came here, I can see why. Thousands of varieties of beer - I mean this is the most beer I have ever seen at once. The only Con I could see was that it takes a good amount of time to pick one if you are not specifically looking for something. One of my favorites from Russian river is also stocked here , which is great since I no longer have to wait to go to Cali to drink one. We also got two smash burgers to go with our drinks, and boy were they good ! I would have personally liked some fries to go with it but alas that was not an option. If you're into small-volume, hard-to-find craft beers or esoteric wines, John's is a goldmine. They do carry a lot of the big boy labels too, but the selection of local brews, ciders, and wines here is almost second to none. What seems like a nondescript storefront that's seen better days is actually a wine wonderland inside, complete with a separate bar area with 10 taps (usually local) and a grill serving some of my favorite sandwiches and smash burgers (I recommend the Killer Turkey). The stools at the counter here and the random scattering of tables nearby are usually occupied by Multnomah Village locals, so it feels very much like a community gathering spot too. The vibe is a little shabby, disheveled and low key, which makes this original location even more lovable. read more

And I do want to try the food some time, a burger or a reuben or. they were serving a lot of food today on father's day. And here's the kicker, they declined my gift card, even though it was an entirely valid unused gift card. Nothing on the gift card says that it would expire, but they refused it. So never again. I haven't been here since before covid - I think it must've changed ownership in the interim... not at all what it used to be. They still have a very large selection but its half of what it used to be and the space has been changed into a restaurant. The staff is surly and the prices are crazy high. I hear the food here is great but I have yet to venture into ordering food when I have to wait for the cashier to finish hanging out with their buddy from a far or to finish getting themselves a drink from one of the ice tea coolers to give me any attention. The beer selection is fine but who cares when the place smells like a dirty armpit and the cashiers look and act like they are truly failing life, and are so unhappy to be there that if they cracked a smile, they might literally fall into pieces. I once pointed out to a cashier that they should have helped those who were at the end of the enormous line at the bar because we were already waiting in line to pay since no one was manning the register. And, instead of a "my bad", I got a such a nasty response, you'd think the kid's dad owns the place. Today, same thing. No one at the register and me and another at the bar looking to pay. I walk up and literally the same kid walks out while on the job and takes his friends to his car in the parking lot to put their belongings in the employee's car. The other girl goes toward the coolers and gets herself a drink. When I finally ask her if she works here on the way back because there was not one employee on the floor, she says yeah and gives me dirty look. I leave and as I try to pull out, the employee is with their friends talking in the middle of the parking lot and I can't get by. I stop and smile to make sure the employee sees me and they just tell their friends to move back and then glared back at me. This place is done for. You can go to many places nearby and get a delicious burger and a good beer. You don't need the hassle, the smell, or the funky attitude exuding like a toxic sewage into your life. If this was the only place to on earth to get a beer, I'd quit drinking. read more

We love John's Marketplace! We go here a few times a month for their great selection of ciders. They have so many local ones to choose from. They also have quite a few low-calorie ones for those of who want to drink more but not have drink a ton of calories. One of favorite imports is also here... I can no longer find it anywhere else. It is almost always busy but never feels crowded. I think the only time we've eaten here was during burger week a year or two ago, but the food was great. I feel this one is by far the best one. The burgers are flavorful, the price is decent and the atmosphere is always fun. The service is always spot on. I've tried other John's but the burgers aren't as tasty, I think the grill needs more time for that seasoned grizzled flavor only an O.G.grill can provide. Great selection of beer. Can drink bottled beer if nothing on tap suits you, corkage fee. Tried some of their food again after seeing what some others were eating. I like the grill cheese, lots of cheese, good bread, also cheap. Would be perfect if cheese was sharper, as it loses most of that when melted. Turkey was good but ice cold. Philly not so hot. Oh you can bring in your own food like sushi from food cart across the street (call to order before you come here for time it is ready). Service is usually good except when busy. Fred and I don't like doing negative reviews, but we sat down at the bar, the woman that came to help, we felt was very rude. It made Fred and I felt unwelcome. We stayed for a drink, but we felt awkward the whole time. Walking around the market part, and seeing all the different kinds of beer, was amazing. 5-stars!!! We would definitely come for cans and bottles to go, but won't come and sit at the bar again. If you're not a regular, I'd probably steer clear of the bar. read more
