Stopped by Friday night for Dinner and was served a horrible dinner of Shepherds pie... flavorless, dry, no gravy....when I asked for a side of gravy they charged me extra...my friend ordered fish and chips and he ate none of it...we were both so disappointed....too make matters worse...we had a server named Lalo who was very rude and unhelpful.... I was with a large dinner party and split my check with my sister and myself. I paid $75which included my tip....I specifically put a zero in the tip section (my sister paid tip on her bill) and discovered the next day that Lalo the server put an extra $20 for his tip on my bill.... So let add this up Lousy food Bad service And a waiter trying to sneak on an undeserved tip.... Would you want to eat here??? read more

Went for st pattys day. They still aren't sitting people Inside (at least didn't look like it) even though it is permitted now. Only had a few tables on the patio. However it was explained that the alley was open but we would have to get up and go to bar for food and drinks because no servers were tending to the alley seating. Kinda weird. Seems like it would be safer to just serve the table outside and or seat people inside rather than having many people get up and go to bar every time they needed a beer. Anyhow we didn't wanna deal with all that and went to knolls down the street. Knolls had plenty of seating inside and outside. read more

Came here with my coworkers for a going away celebration and we were a big group, around 10 of us and the service was great. I got the Buffalo my n cheese which is nice because you can get it with either a soup or a salad . I got the soup which was cream of broccoli. It was delicioussssssss! You must try it! read more

I've had a thing for this place since it was Russell's when i was a kid. After it turned into E.J. Malloys and now Ej's Pub I have yet to be disappointed. I've gotten food to go and come in during a football game & had great meals. The most recent time was with my best friend & boyfriend. I had the California club, my girl had lemon pepper wings and the bf had the meatloaf. We were all happy with our orders. Delicious food, bug portions & a couple of amazing bloody marys & a giant michelada. We will definitely be back. read more

This bar looks and feels really nice but their mixed drinks were really gross and unenjoyable. I really liked the atmosphere of the bar. The dim lighting, the outdoor seating area is very cozy, the TVs at the bar playing sports, and good music in the background. The drinks my boyfriend and I ordered, totally blowed though! I ordered some sort of coffee with alcohol in it. What it was supposed to taste like was, a dark cocoa with coffee and Kahlua topped with whipped cream. What I got was this god awful drink that tasted nothing like coffee or cocoa and the only thing sweet about it was the whipped cream. It was so over the top with liqueur, it didn't even smell good, it was just overbearing. My boyfriend got the Kickin' Moscow Mule, which lots of places are doing a version of. You put a jalapeño in a margarita or a mule and it's supposed to be a good balance between spicy and refreshing. Well, not here. We couldn't even taste the ginger beer, there was no refreshing aftertaste or taste at all. Again, a super overpowering drink that just had the taste of jalapeño! It was like drinking jalapeño juice, with ice! So nasty, not at all what was expected. My boyfriend and I couldn't even finish our drinks. It was such a waste coming in at $18. We probably will come back because they had a pretty good beer menu, and you can't go wrong with beer. The service was decent, and like I said, I really liked the feel of the place itself. The mixed drink game needs some work though. read more

Been to E J Malloy's twice now so I figured it's about time I submit my review. Each visit here, was during lunch with coworkers as it's right down the street from work. Staff is very friendly and accommodating as they are able to handle the lunch crowd without any significant delays or waits. As for the food, it's about or just slightly better than your typical bar food. First time I was there, I had a bratwurst sandwich with pasta salad and a side of chili. I felt the chili could have been more spicy and that I wish the bratwurst serving was more proportionate to the bread. Pasta salad was ok. I would have liked to have experienced more of that zesty Italian zing. The second time, I opted for the Chicken Alfredo. It wasn't bad - a little on the bland side which was remedied by adding some salt and pepper. I didn't want to add cheese but I'm sure that would have helped as well. A very generous amount of chicken. There was a piece or pieces of chicken in just about every bite. Pasta was cooked just right. Location is cozy and can get loud. Parking can be a little challenging but that's how it goes when you have a business on a major street like Atlantic. read more

I had a wicked good time here! Wanted to find some good food before heading to a charger game and this gem popped up! The place was packed for Sunday football and the vibe was awesome! My table ordered the chicken fried steak (the gravy was garlicky and amazing!), and the hangover burger. Appreciated the idea of it which was pretty much a French toast burger. But the French toast part was super eggy so I didn't really eat the bread.. But in all seriousness Will Ferrell was onto something when he put maple syrup on everything lol. If you're in the area check it out! I'll be surprised if you're disappointed. read more

Went here after a meeting. I ordered the beef dip with there famous fries (can't remember the name of them but there is a picture posted. Everything was awesome!! The dip was just the right amount of crispy so that when I dipped it in the juice it was perfection in my mouth! My taste buds were in love with me that night! I also ordered a side salad and I was pretty impressed with the serving amount and the freshness that was on that plate. The service was great as well, but then again we were literally the only group of people there. I guess I can't really rate them too much based on service, but they were friendly. Ooh this place is mediocre to say the least. Came for happy hour (3pm), and it was just 'whatever'. The restaurant is on the small size, but luckily for me, there were only about 4 other people. There is outside seating. So if you are feeling a bit claustrophobic, you can go outside. My food was ok, pretty standard as far as taste. I ordered a western bacon cheeseburger but of course, vegetarian style: veggie patty and minus the bacon, and the gorgonzola fries. I did not care for the sauce at all. Happy hour wouldnt be complete with the adult beverage. I really didnt want any strong liquor, so I decided on beer (I'm not a beer drinker so only half was consumed). If I were into sports, I could find myself coming back. However, since I am not, this foodie won't be back. Nothing against EJ. It's just not an "I just have to come back here" type of place. read more

Best crispy wings in town! You can only get one flavor but they are pretty delicious. Also not breaded which is better in my opinion. Workers are really friendly and attentive. It can get busy on weekends but never had an issue finding a table. read more

Food was good, good vibes, pub prices and this place is definitely popular!!! May I recommend the blue cheese buffalo chicken Mac and cheese?!? Delicious! It was creamy and savory! Decent selection of draft beers - waitresses will give you samples upon request. And what looks like a full bar. Only downside was they only had two-unisex single restrooms so you'll have to wait and miss out on some fun! read more

Came here on a Friday night with 2 girlfriends. We wanted a place with good drinks and appetizers to munch on while we caught up. We met there at 8:30pm. It wasn't what we thought it was going to be like? Bright lights, very casual crowd, and a short appetizer menu. It felt more like a dive bar in a nice restaurant. There is nothing wrong with a dive bar, I love one every once in a while! However, it just wasn't the vibe we were going for. Anyway, we were craving like veggies as appetizers (Brussels sprouts or cauliflower or carrots, anything!) but they had more like bar food (nachos, fries, onion rings, etc.). The entrees did look good but we didn't want anything too heavy since it was later in the night. Anyway, my girlfriends ordered beer and I ordered a gin drink that I actually liked. Not sure how but apparently they were out of the ingredients by the time I ordered my second drink (around 9:15pm!). Sucks, so I switched over to a Moscow mule. It was ok. I just really wasnt feeling it, I guess. Maybe if I had known ahead of time what to expect (bright lights, ok drinks, no healthy appetizers) I would of liked it more? Who knows... But if you're in the mood to have a beer and watch a game in a nice place come here. They have plenty of televisions! read more

I first I called to see if they were showing the ufc fight that day. I called and asked if they were showing the fight a young lady answered the phone and said yes and before I could ask if the bar was crowded she immediately hung up the phone..... strike one. So I went there anyway with my girlfriend. When I walked in the door it looked like a lot of the seats were taken. I looked at a staff member to ask where there any more seats available and she literally looked away from me and walked back into the bar. Ifan look at another staff member at the back of the bar near where they pick up the food from he caught eyes with me and looked away and went back into the kitchen area. WTF LOL After that I decided hey these guys must not want my business I left and drove 10 minutes away to Buffalo Wild Wings. read more

Well believe it or not I guess free speech doesn't exist in the longer I went to the E j's this evening and was told that I would not be served because of the review I left on yelp. Mind you, I've never been disrespectful or rude, I just exercised my right to leave a review on how I was treated. Had no idea that if the manager did not like your review, she would ban you from the establishment. I know that each business has a right to refuse service, but this is more like retaliation because of my views. Because this is a matter of principle, if anyone knows an attorney I could speak to regarding this issue, please let me know. read more

I've been to EJ's a few times but I haven't been back since their big remodel. The set up inside is the same as it was except all of the seating and tables are new also they have a new fire pit and seating in the front patio. It's really nice . Some ladies sitting there with wine in front of the open fire had the right idea. They have a bar along the front of the restaurant. I ordered the Po Boy sandwich which is usually made with an Irish banger, I upgraded it to a fried fish sandwich. It comes with fries but for $2 more you can upgrade to onion rings, tater tots or sweet potato fries. I upgraded to onion rings. The sandwich was really good. The fish was golden brown and not greasy at all. The roll was soft and delicious. It was reasonably priced at $14. (Regularly $12 but $2 extra for the fish upgrade). We also had their locally brewed Blonde lager. It was really good as well, $6. I'll come back! read more

History

Established in 2001.

In 1865, Elias Jeremy Malloy was born in Dunleer, Ireland, a cow ridden but picturesque hamlet outside Dublin. After 20 years of sweat and toil, Elias and his bonny wife Colleen left their cows and ventured forth to make their fortune in the new world. They braved a long journey across stormy oceans, through the chaos of Ellis Island and over rough American plains before finally dropping anchor in Long Beach, California. One decade and nine children later, E.J. and Colleen finally found their pot of gold by doing something they loved...pleasing friends with their hospitality, hearty cooking, heavenly brews and annual "Shamrock Shenanigan festival" with the same perseverance and hard work of ten years before, E.J. Malloy's was created.

Meet the Business Owner: Brent B.

Brent Brakebill is the proprietor and although he is only Irish by injection, he managed to restore EJ Malloy's to a reasonable semblance of its former Gaelic beauty, with a few minor conveniences like water closets, moving pictures, and telephones. What was most disappointing happened at the end. The waitress who had originally seated us actually mocked my friend when he said the wait time was ridiculous. She laughed and repeated the word "ridiculous" in a sarcastic way instead of addressing our concerns. It was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. It's disappointing when a loyal customer is treated that way. I had much higher expectations for this place, and I truly believe the situation could have been handled better!

The Brussels sprouts had a nice mix of tender and crispy pieces that gave additional texture. The calamari was tender and the pesto style sauce paired real good with it. The Thai curry sea bass was flavorful, flaky, and had the right amount of spice. The cioppino had a rich shellfish flavor in the broth and I appreciated that the tomato base didn't have such an acidic taste. We also shared the tomahawk, which was juicy, cooked perfectly, and had a sprinkle of coarse salt that really brought out the flavor. Overall, we had a great experience. The food was excellent, but Nate's service really made our night special, making us feel right at home.

We were seated outside, which also looked nice at first glance, but I noticed quite a few spider webs around the windows. My boyfriend even felt webs brushing against his arm while we were sitting there, which wasn't exactly the extra ambiance we were expecting. We ordered quite a bit: spicy Pad Thai, Bang Bang Shrimp, Pad See Ew, mango sticky rice, and of course the Thai tea with the popsicle. I'll give credit where it's due. The Bang Bang Shrimp was easily the best thing we ordered and was absolutely delicious. The Thai tea popsicle also lived up to the TikTok hype, although the actual Thai tea itself was on the sweeter side. If you love sugar, you'll probably enjoy it. My biggest complaint with the food was the spicy Pad Thai. The flavor was great, but it came with what felt like a whole chicken farm and a cameo appearance from the noodles. I ordered Pad Thai, not chicken with noodle garnish. The Pad See Ew was also noticeably salty. Now you're probably wondering why I'm giving this place a low rating if most of the food was decent. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the meal. When it was time to pay, my aunt was figuring out how much everyone needed to Zelle her since the restaurant only allows a maximum of two cards for split payments. While we were trying to do the math, our waiter stood over us watching the payment screen like he was supervising a final exam. He was clearly waiting to make sure a tip was entered. My aunt politely asked him to give us a minute, and thankfully he walked away. Maybe when you see a family actively calculating a bill, that's your cue to...actually give them a minute. Keep in mind we also tipped 20% despite all this. Throughout the meal, he did stop by our table, but it rarely felt like he was checking in to make sure everything was okay. If anything I felt rushed. He also gave off that "customer service smile" that disappears the moment you stop looking. The cherry on top for me happened as we were leaving. We had been sitting on the outdoor patio talking for a bit after paying, which is pretty normal for my family. Before leaving, I went inside to ask where the restroom was. The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. It's unfortunate because the food had some highlights, and the restaurant itself has a cute atmosphere. But the service made it feel like customers are viewed more as transactions than guests. Between hovering over us during payment and questioning whether I even belonged there after spending money, I left feeling more unwelcomed than satisfied. I'll happily support a restaurant that appreciates my business instead of making me feel like I have to prove I earned the right to use the restroom after paying for dinner.

Reservations are fairly easy to get, which make it an optimal choice if I'm looking to have a nice meal. The ambiance of Saint & Second is what sets it apart from other Belmont Shore restaurants. There's indoor seating and rooftop seating upstairs, and both areas are designed impeccably. The food menu changes every few months, which is great because it allows the chefs to experiment with new menu items, but I have been left missing past items. When I returned for the third time for my favorite hummus, I found that it was discontinued for a nice, but less tasty green hummus (which leaned more into an avocado flavor than traditional hummus flavor). Overall, if you'd like to return to Saint and Second, you should expect some changes to menu items every few months and plan accordingly. One appetizer I'd recommend is the tuna on crispy rice. This is a consistent item with great flavors that trump other tuna crispy rice dishes I've had at other restaurants. The amount of fish on this item is generous. If you are celebrating your birthday here like I did, they offer a delcious smores-flavored dessert. It was crispy on the outside yet still gooey and moist on the inside. I'm not sure if they make their own ketchup too, as it looked clumpier and tasted really fresh too. The kids gobbled this up. Hummus and pita (5/5): It came with a generous amount of both hummus and pita. The hummus was well flavored and blended, and it really complemented everything on the table. The pocket pita bread was not what I had in mind (I'm used to thicker ones), but the kids really loved it overall. Ice cream (4.5/5): We ordered two scoops from the dessert menu. They were both really thick, creamy and almost chewy like liquidized mochi. It was a very interesting texture but nonetheless a nice tasty treat on a hot day. I much preferred the vanilla bean, as the pistachio tasted and looked rather artificial (and I'm a pistachio ice cream lover). This place had so many to-go orders during the afternoon we were there. I can see why. Food is super fresh and tasty. I think we will be back the next time we are visiting.

The LBC Represents the Best Wings The time has come where I give a real review of a wing joint. I do enjoy ranting about everyday experiences, but I want to make sure I stay on topic at least every few posts. I feel that by now you all know what I like in a wing experience. Everything I have talked about in previous posts will be involved in the final rating of an establishment. The rating will be based on a 5 scale, 5 being the best. Well, I'm not going to draw this out. I am going to tell you the best place in the LA area for wings so we have something to rate others against. This is a bar/restaurant in Long Beach called E.J. Malloy's. There are two E.J. Malloy's. One is on Atlantic a couple blocks north of Carson, and the other is on Broadway and Redondo. Each place has strengths and weaknesses. The one on Atlantic serves beer and liquor while the Broadway location only serves beer. On the flip side, the one on Broadway has slightly better wings than the one on Atlantic. In no way are the wings at the Atlantic location bad In fact, they are better than all other wing places I have visited. It's just that the wings on Broadway are really good. It would be like the difference between Tango and Cash. Now Tango is cool and classy, but Cash is a bad ass that isn't afraid to hook up with Tango's sister. And Cash rocks a sick mullet. Both places are the same except for the overall wing quality/taste. They bring the wings out with ranch, so be sure to ask for bleu cheese if that's your preference. The good thing is Malloy's won't charge you for extra dipping sauces like at others might. Their temperatures are mild, medium, and nuclear. If you like average heat, go with medium. I will say that nuclear is pretty hot. Sometimes it's hard for me to finish off a pound of nuclear. Now if you have that good wing buddy with you, here's what you do. They serve them by the pound. 1, 2, and 3 pound portions. Start with one pound of medium, and then do one pound of hot. Now if you guys think you are true bad asses, order their secret item that is not on the menu. Super nuclear. Last time I ordered this the waiter asked twice if I was sure about what I was doing. This heat made my neck sweat and my ears ring. It was pretty intense. You can't even smell them because the nostril sting is too intense. When you are done with the wings, there is a lot of thick sauce left on your fingers, so you definitely feel satisfied. The washroom doesn't have anything with sensors and there are lots of televisions with all types of sports. On a scale of 5 sticky fingers, I would rate this place a 4.25. I can't give it a 5 because that would be the all time wing joint. But this is definitely the best I have found. So if you ever find yourself in the birthplace of Snoop Dogg, or just want to make a special trip to the LBC, make sure you stop by E.J. Malloy's. One of the only few places in the Bixby area to grab a casual drink. I used to order their hot/buffalo wings for take-out, but after inconsistent quality and portion sizes, I gave up on that. Came here again this past Friday with a friend to catch up and got there around 2:30, just shy of the beginning of happy hour. There was a page in their drink menu that didn't state it was happy hour, but just daily drink specials ($1 off margaritas) and the waitress said it didn't start until 5pm. So in addition to happy hour from 3-6/7, there are other "daily specials" that start at 5. Why not call it 5pm specials instead of "daily?" I was in the mood to drink, so I was ready to pay full price, but hey, I could stand to save a $1. Anyway, so I opted for the mojito. "Sorry, we don't have mint leaves. I don't even know why it's still on the menu." Really?! Third time's a charm, I ordered some drink with "sex" in the title. Tasty and not too light handed on the alcohol. We shared the quesadilla and an order of chicken tenders. Both were good. Love that the quesadilla came with generous amounts of guac, sour cream, and salsa :) The chicken tenders were yummy. My friend is finishing up the last chicken tender that she just dipped into the ranch when another waiter comes and picks up the plate with the ranch. Umm, hello, can't you see the tender in her hand?! She ate it ranchless, but before you start clearing things off the table, how about a courtesy, "are you done with this?" On arrival we announced to the waitress that we were for drinks & snacks only. We could read the aversion on her face possibly she expected that we should have been for a full meal. We ordered drinks, chips and grilled vegetable. We were served with wrong type of vegetables and billed for costlier wine than served. Surprisingly both the mistakes were for higher priced items. I have personally managed full service hotels and believe in hospitality industry's motto that "Customer is always right". Here with little difficulty they agreed to both the mistakes. Even after this, the demeanor of the waitress was unbecoming of the profession. The manager declined to take the payment. I recommend the owners take surgical measures or else with this type of service the very survival of the restaurant could be at stake. I WILL NEVER VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN AND WISH GOOD LUCK TO OTHERS. read more

I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately the experience was a mixed bag--and ultimately not worth returning. The food had some highlights: the short ribs were tender, flavorful, and easily the best part of the meal. The pork belly skewers were also well-cooked with a nice balance of crispiness and richness. However, that's where the positives end. The fish and chips were honestly terrible--overcooked, dry, and lacking any real flavor. Definitely not something I'd recommend. What really ruined the experience, though, was the service. Our server, Cassie, was inattentive and unprofessional, which made the entire visit frustrating. My gf and I just went to EJ's for the first time and within a minute of walking in, a drunk woman and three men sexually harassed us! We immediately left and called the manager, Dawn, but instead of doing something about it- she told us to calm down. We are NEVER going back and seriously hope the staff- specifically the manager- change their attitude and pay more attention to their establishment and the safety of their customers! read more

Experience could have been better. Service by the staff was good.
