This was the best bar I had been too in southern LA county. Now that I'm in Las Vegas I really wish Bixby Knolls' EJ Malloy's Pub was out here. I miss the servers who remembered us after being gone for months due to renovations. The drinks were great, the food was good. This place really is one of the few great things that I encountered and I hope I get lucky to find a place as good as this up here. If not... I've been coming here for a while now, so this is not an uninformed opinion or based on one bad experience. Actually, the first 2 times I came here were very good experiences. The food is good, the service was fantastic, and the bartenders kept the drinks full. However, the last few times I have been here have pretty much ruined the place for me. It started with a couple days of bad service (by "bad service" I mean waiting for drink refills or to order more food and the server/bartender just never comes by or makes himself available), but I didn't let that bother me. I went this past Monday for Monday night football. I ordered a sandwich with a side salad, but I have diet restrictions, so I asked for ranch on the sandwich instead of an onion spread. Well, the sandwich came with one ranch for my salad and none on my sandwich. When I asked for ranch for my sandwich (like I originally asked), my server eventually brought it. But when I got the bill, I was charged $0.75 for an extra ranch. $0.75, no big deal, right? Well let me preface this by saying I worked at a restaurant for 7 years. My brother is a bartender. I am VERY aware of what it's like for a server to have to walk back and forth to a table on a busy night and bring them ranch 3x because they didn't just ask for it in the first place. I am also VERY understanding and forgiving of a server's mistakes, even when they are bad (and this server was nice but he was horrible). But when the place is half full, and you spend most of the night standing around talking, at least get my order right. Or don't charge me for your mistakes. Even with all of that, I still went back 3 days later for Thursday night football. This place has a great atmosphere and the food is good. They always have the right game on, be it football, baseball, or even soccer. I sat at the bar because bartenders tend to be better servers, and I was going to have a few drinks anyway. This time, I just wanted a salad. So I ordered a large "pub salad." Again, I ordered ranch. The salad is massive, but I got the same ranch that was just big enough for my side salad on Monday. So I sat, not eating for 5-10 minutes, mostly to test the bartender to see if he would ask me why. Finally I just turned to him as he walked by. When I asked for more ranch, and kind of snuffed to make it sound like it wasn't enough (which I was going to explain but he didn't give me a chance), he kind of snarked and laughingly said, "oh, you want another ranch?" I didn't hold it against him, even though I found it rude and condescending. Most of the rest of our exchange was pleasant and he seemed nice enough. But he still spent most of the night hanging out with other bartenders/servers and didn't do a very good job. I had planned on sitting for the game and having some drinks. But instead I decided to just leave at halftime because I was over it. I've always found it pretty low class to charge for extra ranch. I can understand it if there's a big table on a busy night that makes a server constantly go back and forth to their table just for it. But when you serve food without what was asked for or what is needed for the food, then I have a problem with it, especially when a guest is already spending $25-50 on food and drinks (or more if I eat with someone). And I wanted enough ranch for my salad. It's not like I was asking for a new ranch every 5 minutes for one basket of fries. The first time I was willing to let it go. Sometimes young servers do what they are told to do instead of what fits the situation, and it could have been a mistake. But the second time made it clear that this place just isn't worth my time or money. Again, it's not just the ranch, it's the whole experience. The repeated bad service, the attitude, charging me extra because of my diet limitations, it all kind of added up. I'll find somewhere else to go and watch games. read more

So I loved this place. But I will never return after straight being told "NO". I have being eating keto for health reasons. I asked for a hangover burger without the the bun or syrup. The menu says "no substitutions" but I didn't ask for a substitution I asked for two things to be left off. But what makes things even more frustrating is the waitress actually said "if I do this I will be fired". What f*cking bs that the waiting staff is forced to tell customers "NO" in fear of their jobs. It's a great place if you don't have special eating restrictions and/or will just order straight from the menu. But no matter my diet in the future I will never patronize this place again. read more

Really enjoy their sandwiches and nice cold beers. The Club and the French Dip are really good. The french fries are ok. Got the baked beans the next time, and preferred them. For beer, well, I love Smithwick's, and am always up for a Harp...so don't need much else. The one thing that I found strange though, was the fish and chips was mundane. It was ok. A 2 1/2. So I'd avaoid them, and stick with the sandwiches (Though my friend says the Pub Parmesan burger is very good). Oh, and the guiness Skewer appetizer, also very good. read more

Stopped by Friday night for Dinner and was served a horrible dinner of Shepherds pie... flavorless, dry, no gravy....when I asked for a side of gravy they charged me extra...my friend ordered fish and chips and he ate none of it...we were both so disappointed....too make matters worse...we had a server named Lalo who was very rude and unhelpful.... I was with a large dinner party and split my check with my sister and myself. I paid $75which included my tip....I specifically put a zero in the tip section (my sister paid tip on her bill) and discovered the next day that Lalo the server put an extra $20 for his tip on my bill.... So let add this up Lousy food Bad service And a waiter trying to sneak on an undeserved tip.... Would you want to eat here??? read more

Went for st pattys day. They still aren't sitting people Inside (at least didn't look like it) even though it is permitted now. Only had a few tables on the patio. However it was explained that the alley was open but we would have to get up and go to bar for food and drinks because no servers were tending to the alley seating. Kinda weird. Seems like it would be safer to just serve the table outside and or seat people inside rather than having many people get up and go to bar every time they needed a beer. Anyhow we didn't wanna deal with all that and went to knolls down the street. Knolls had plenty of seating inside and outside. read more

If I had a choice they would get zero stars. We checked their website before going and it said that they were dog friendly on their patio. We got there, and after about 10 minutes we were told by the manager that we had to leave that dogs aren't allowed even on the patio and their website "needs to be fixed". Absolutely unacceptable staff behavior! I was there as part of a party of 9. Unbeknown to 8 of us, one person in our party got into an argument with our server away from our table while he was attempting to order drinks directly from the bar. Another server started clearing our table of empty plates. One of our other guests asked her if she could order a few shots. The server started her response with "First of All..." (that is already aggressive and so was her tone) "I am NOT your server and we are not serving your table anymore!" We had no idea what was going on. She continued with "One of you said something rude to your server, so we will bring out whatever drinks you already ordered, then you need to leave!" Our server demanded we pay the bill, which included $135 for the shots we did NOT receive. When the guest holding the check and cash told her, we will pay the bill as soon as we receive those shots, the server said she is not going to serve us. The other guest insisted that we will not pay for the shots not received, so the server said she will take them off the bill. We had to insist on a new check without the shots on it so we could pay and leave. Our unruly guest who had an issue with the server walked out through the patio by himself. As the rest of us (who had no altercation with staff) walked out the front door, the staff proceeded to ring a bell and chant the servers name as others servers told remaining customers that we were being kicked out. To be shamed as we walked out of this establishment, when we (not counting the one person who walked out of the patio away from us) did NOTHING wrong was embarrassing and a complete bashing of our character! The other guests and I who had no part in the altercation are frequent patrons of the Bixby Knolls community, so to be publicly shamed as we walked out of a busy bar on a holiday is completely unacceptable. No matter what happened between one person in our party and a server away form our table and not involving us warranted the behavior of the rest of their staff. SHAME ON YOU EJ'S for allowing your staff to treat other customers that way when we were not involved in the incident! Your staff should be ashamed of themselves! They may have thought they were defending their co-worker, but they publicly shamed 8 innocent people in the process. DO BETTER! read more

I've had a thing for this place since it was Russell's when i was a kid. After it turned into E.J. Malloys and now Ej's Pub I have yet to be disappointed. I've gotten food to go and come in during a football game & had great meals. The most recent time was with my best friend & boyfriend. I had the California club, my girl had lemon pepper wings and the bf had the meatloaf. We were all happy with our orders. Been to E J Malloy's twice now so I figured it's about time I submit my review. Each visit here, was during lunch with coworkers as it's right down the street from work. Staff is very friendly and accommodating as they are able to handle the lunch crowd without any significant delays or waits. As for the food, it's about or just slightly better than your typical bar food. First time I was there, I had a bratwurst sandwich with pasta salad and a side of chili. I felt the chili could have been more spicy and that I wish the bratwurst serving was more proportionate to the bread. Pasta salad was ok. I would have liked to have experienced more of that zesty Italian zing. The second time, I opted for the Chicken Alfredo. It wasn't bad - a little on the bland side which was remedied by adding some salt and pepper. I didn't want to add cheese but I'm sure that would have helped as well. A very generous amount of chicken. There was a piece or pieces of chicken in just about every bite. Pasta was cooked just right. Location is cozy and can get loud. Parking can be a little challenging but that's how it goes when you have a business on a major street like Atlantic. read more

This bar looks and feels really nice but their mixed drinks were really gross and unenjoyable. I really liked the atmosphere of the bar. The dim lighting, the outdoor seating area is very cozy, the TVs at the bar playing sports, and good music in the background. The drinks my boyfriend and I ordered, totally blowed though! I ordered some sort of coffee with alcohol in it. What it was supposed to taste like was, a dark cocoa with coffee and Kahlua topped with whipped cream. What I got was this god awful drink that tasted nothing like coffee or cocoa and the only thing sweet about it was the whipped cream. It was so over the top with liqueur, it didn't even smell good, it was just overbearing. My boyfriend got the Kickin' Moscow Mule, which lots of places are doing a version of. You put a jalapeño in a margarita or a mule and it's supposed to be a good balance between spicy and refreshing. Well, not here. We couldn't even taste the ginger beer, there was no refreshing aftertaste or taste at all. Again, a super overpowering drink that just had the taste of jalapeño! It was like drinking jalapeño juice, with ice! So nasty, not at all what was expected. My boyfriend and I couldn't even finish our drinks. It was such a waste coming in at $18. We probably will come back because they had a pretty good beer menu, and you can't go wrong with beer. The service was decent, and like I said, I really liked the feel of the place itself. Went here after a meeting. I ordered the beef dip with there famous fries (can't remember the name of them but there is a picture posted. Everything was awesome!! The dip was just the right amount of crispy so that when I dipped it in the juice it was perfection in my mouth! My taste buds were in love with me that night! I also ordered a side salad and I was pretty impressed with the serving amount and the freshness that was on that plate. The service was great as well, but then again we were literally the only group of people there. I guess I can't really rate them too much based on service, but they were friendly. Ooh this place is mediocre to say the least. Came for happy hour (3pm), and it was just 'whatever'. The restaurant is on the small size, but luckily for me, there were only about 4 other people. There is outside seating. So if you are feeling a bit claustrophobic, you can go outside. My food was ok, pretty standard as far as taste. I ordered a western bacon cheeseburger but of course, vegetarian style: veggie patty and minus the bacon, and the gorgonzola fries. I did not care for the sauce at all. Happy hour wouldnt be complete with the adult beverage. I really didnt want any strong liquor, so I decided on beer (I'm not a beer drinker so only half was consumed). If I were into sports, I could find myself coming back. However, since I am not, this foodie won't be back. Nothing against EJ. I had a wicked good time here! Wanted to find some good food before heading to a charger game and this gem popped up! The place was packed for Sunday football and the vibe was awesome! My table ordered the chicken fried steak (the gravy was garlicky and amazing!), and the hangover burger. Appreciated the idea of it which was pretty much a French toast burger. But the French toast part was super eggy so I didn't really eat the bread.. But in all seriousness Will Ferrell was onto something when he put maple syrup on everything lol.
