Wanted to try a new birria joint in the area and saw they had birria ramen online. The restaurant was clean enough for a quick bite. The ramen wasn't on the menu but the server said they had it. I wish I could say I loved it because I wanted it so bad but it was saltier than the Atlantic. I couldn't get halfway through it. It's been a while since I've been to El Agave Azul since the one in Orange Park closed and they focused their efforts on the truck and Southside. But today I happened to be on this side of town for a doctor appointment and felt I deserved a treat after my procedure. I was thinking ramen or pho but my tummy craved something Mexican. I remember hearing someone mention they had birria ramen here so I made a little detour. Food - 10/10. When I say this hits the spot I'm sorely underestimating it. Tons of meat and bouncy noodles served with a small side of rice (bonus!!) and onions, cilantro, and limes. I was a little concerned at first that I saw no cheese but I kept digging down (it was a lot of meat and noodles!) and found the most perfect melty cheese and made this just heaven. The rice was on point and a little drizzle of that lovely consommé made it even more delightful. I was seriously tempted to toss in the rice but the bowl was sooo full. Service - 10/10. Greeted quickly and warmly. Offered to sit where I please and when I dashed off to the restroom and came out they had chips and salsa waiting for me and ready to take my drink order. Food comes out quick and freshly assembled. She checked on me a couple more times and quickly provided me with to go containers when it was clear I couldn't put away any more. Atmosphere - 7/10. They do a lot in such a small space but they do it well. The decor is brilliant and charming and there are plenty of picnic tables outside under an awning to enjoy a nice day. My only drawback that I experienced was that the a/c was not working well. Not sure if it was just today or was ongoing but in the hot hot hot Jax summer that can dissuade one from coming. Me and my mom friends went for lunch and I was beyond excited to try the birria pizza I kept hearing about everywhere. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in. We went at a good time, no crowd and no longer waiting at all. We got served chips and salsa as soon as the waiter came over to begin taking our orders. This particular Mexican restaurant is located in the same shopping plaza as the Winn-Dixie supermarket and was a decent enough spit to grab lunch. A client and I headed here for lunch. We got there just before one o'clock in the afternoon, so it appeared that we probably just missed the lunch crowd. Our server was extremely professional, outgoing, and friendly. Since birria was on the menu, we both went with birria dishes. My client had the birria quesadilla and I had a birria burrito. I will say, at least how it looked, my client got the better of our meals. The birria quesadillas looked amazing. Don't get me wrong, my birria burrito was definitely good, but that birria quesadills looked incredible. I must of come on a bad day. The margarita, I could not drink it. It was horrible. The Mexican corn came to me cold. They reheated it, then it was delicious. The California burrito was dry. I forgot to ask about desserts. The Server/Cashier was very polite and kind. He gets 5 stars alone! The people in the kitchen just need to improve on the food. The drink machine that holds the drinks needs to be checked as well. I will do another review next time I go and I think it will be better. All of the other times I came here, all was excellent. I went to El Agave Azul specifically to try the quesabirria taco. I also got a carne asada taco. I have been on a search for a great quesabirria taco in the city for a while and after seeing the great reviews for this place's birria taco and quesadilla, I was excited to try it. I ordered my food to go and added an agua fresca - Jamaica mixed with pina colada. They also had mango, strawberry watermelon, and lemonade agua frescas , along with horchata. My food was clearly made fresh and it was nice and hot. I ate it immediately in my car. The carne asada taco was solid. It needed a little more seasoning on the meat for me but adding the lime helped. Perhaps I should've gotten some salsas from the bar. The birria taco was alright. It did not have a great cheese pull to it and honestly, it could've benefited from a lot more cheese. Cheese is usually a prominent component of quesabirria and the tortilla is often quite crispy at other places that I've had it. While the tortilla held up to the meat, it certainly wasn't crispy. I'm giving four stars though as perhaps I was confused about whether or not this was supposed to be "quesabirria" or just a taco with birria and cheese as the menu just lists - birria taco. I'm glad that I tried El Agave Azul. Although the birria quesadilla and pizza are intriguing, I don't think I'll be back for more tacos. read more

We were a couple doors down from this spot so thought we would give it a try. Went online and looked at the specials for Saturday. Get to the restaurant and they don't honor it. They had a sign up about buy 2 sopes get one free. Tried that and was told that is Mondays only and they just forgot to take the sign down. Service was bad as they only had one person working. Menu items are expensive. Drinks are expensive. Hubby and I came here during dinner time on a Wednesday and were the only customers in the restaurant for a good 30 minutes. I think this place gets overlooked since it's right next to the Winn-Dixie (we live right around the corner and just recently learned about this place). This restaurant has cute decor inside and also offers an outside patio for events. The staff here are SO kind and the food came very quickly. I was intrigued when I saw a birria sandwich on the menu, so I ordered it. Wow it was massive! The bread is homemade, and there was so much meat on this sandwich. The best way I can describe it is a Mexican version of a Philly Cheesesteak. There's also avocado on this. This is definitely an entree that can be shared or saved for leftovers. Hubby and I ordered a weeknight dinner from El Agave Azul and really enjoyed it. We shared a chorizo taco, a California style burrito, a birria quesadilla and tortilla chips. The chorizo taco was a tad greasy, the chorizo could have been drained a bit better. It did have really good flavor and spice. I liked the grilled onions and roasted jalapeño served on the side. They have a good thing happening here with a really solid Mexican food restaurant. Now, I've only ever gotten tacos and chips and salsa. I've tried the Birria, pastor and asada tacos. I would say it was the best birria taco, but to be honest, it's the only place I've ever had them. I don't know, I just feel unfaithful by having them somewhere else, but life is about experience. That said, I believe that their tacos are good and they get a higher rating due to proximity. Their asada tacos are not dry, which can happen at some places and the pastor has the proper sweet/savory flavor. Now, my only gripe is the cost of their chips and salsa. I am a chips and salsa fiend. No, really...the food will sit there until I've gorged myself on that perfect snack. It's all about the Birria I was brought here the first time around by a friend. I've returned multiple times ever since. This is a simple, nothing fancy Mexican restaurant that stays super grounded to its roots. There's not one taco on the menu I haven't devoured. My personal favorites are the shrimp taco with slaw and avocado and the pastor, or marinated pork. But what breaks the menu is the birria. Stuffed with shredded beef and mozzarella cheese, it's the damn dipping sauce that's the holy grail. You have to try it for yourself but it's won my heart and stomach. I can literally pound a gallon of this nector from the beef gods. I've also seen good things said about the birria quesadilla but I haven't tried it personally. And the street corn looks super legit but haven't had that either. With Mexican restaurants in the area a dime a dozen, El Agave is truly a gem. Oh, and it's got a salsa bar. First visit here. Service was good and attentive. This is very casual place and the food was good. I am only giving 4 stars for these reasons: We came for lunch and sat outside with our dog. They provide complimentary chips and salsa - excellent! They even brought out fresh chips for us. Gauc was freshly made. I did not expect the food to come out on paper plates and disposables for condiments. I was served Diet Coke in a bottle so I asked for ice in a cup. We ordered sopas and nachos for our entrees. As far as portion size it was good. Nothing special though nachos had cheese, chicken, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. The sopa was not crispy otherwise it was tasty.
