The only reason why I haven't given this 5 stars is that they have gotten my order wrong twice. I ended up with tasty things, just not the things I ordered. The food is good, the price is right. What more could you ask? I've been here 4 times so far and tried something different every time and everything has been great. I especially like the nachos rancheros. They are truly fully loaded, enough food for two meals, and absolutely delicious. I'm not even a big nachos fan, but the nachos alone will keep me coming back. read more

Okay, here's the deal with El Barrio: this is standard mexican fare. No hipster twist here, which is fine. Its decent enough. That said, if you're doing something more traditional, ingredient freshness becomes paramount. You can't afford to have browning/fermenting guacamole, subpar meat, and wilted vegetables. That's my main complaint here, one that I've heard other people echo: things taste just not-that-fresh and there's not enough bold flavors going on to mask the problem. I imagine a lot of this places ability to stay in business is because there are no other takeout Mexican spots in the immediate area. Another place opens up and they'll either need to step up their game or risk losing customers. Also, someone please (!) tell the prep guy that the aluminum side of the wrapping paper is meant to go on the outside of the burrito and the white matte paper on the inside. Small detail but he's been getting this wrong for months and it doesn't add to the experience. Note: Would be happy to change this rating if the issues were addressed. read more

I was standing on the side and I looked at the The receipt and I saw no guacamole I asked the guy to make sure that there's no beans he said the Rancharoes does not come with beans only the chili con comes to beans. We've ordered from El Barrio numerous times and have also gone in. The food is extraordinary (love the ground beef hard tacos) especially for the price. I can only eat one taco as there is so much beef in it. Delivery is super fast. (We're a mile away and from ordering to delivery was 20 minutes if not less. This restaurant is my go-to for quick Mexican food when I don't want to pay the extra cost for Seamless. It doesn't taste particularly flavorful and the chips are not very salty. The restaurant is very small and there is no bathroom. If you want a smoothie, though, definitely come here because they are relatively cheap compared to other places in the neighborhood. read more

This place needs to step up their game. They have no idea how many locals moved here from San Francisco were the burrito is a staple meal as the pizza is to NYC. My grilled veggi burrito was soggy and not rolled properly so it fell apart as soon as I took my first bite. The guacamole wasn't fresh and tasted store bought. The chips were stale and chewy and the salsa was okay but also lacked that yummy fresh salsa flavor. Oh man, I hate to add to this pile on... I *believe* my burrito was yellow goya rice, canned pinto beans, and a tiny portion of bland over cooked chicken. I believe I saw a slice of canned pickled jalapeno or two. The other ingredients were with MIA or unnoticeable - nothing was blackened, there was no hot sauce I could taste, and no green onions. Best of all, the burrio was pretty much folded together, and begun to disintegrate as the moisture from the rice dissolved the tortilla. Honestly, I would be embarrassed to serve something like that to my friends. It wasn't just that the ingredients were as bland as can be, but it was 90% rice and beans. I'm sure they have lots of other good stuff on the menu, but that doesn't really inspire me to explore further. Honestly, there is SO MUCH great mexicanish food within a few blocks of this place (Chavela's, Gueros, Kimchi, Citrico) I don't know what they're thinking. As a native San Franciscan and lover of all things burrito, I was quite excited to hear about this new burrito shop on Franklin Ave. I had my first one last night - the "Grilled Chicken Bay." Since the store just opened, please accept this review as "constructive criticism": 1) The tortilla is fine, but tasted a bit off-the-shelf and could have been a bit warmer 2) The cheese was not melted enough. I would also recommend using jack as opposed to cheddar - sharp cheddar is a bit overwhelming in a burrito. 3) The black beans tasted a bit dry. One of the marks of a good burrito is to have a nice balance of beans and "bean juice" (the water/oil that the beans are cooked in), which does a nice job of adding flavor to the rest of the burrito. Bean juice was lacking in the burrito that I had. 4) The chicken tasted dry and lacked spicing 5) The rice, which looked basically like white rice, lacked flavor and spice. I would recommend substituting more traditionally-spiced Mexican/Spanish rice in place of what is being used now Overall, the burrito, like many of its individual ingredients, tasted pretty dry. Just as importantly, it was not wrapped in tin foil! After taking a few bites of the burrito, it completely disintegrated in my hands. A burrito not wrapped in tin foil is a disaster waiting to happen... I was happy to see that chips were included, and the salsa and guac tasted good. The chips tasted like they were store-bought - it would be nice to have a homemade option for chips as well. Finally, though space is cramped inside, a salsa bar would also be a welcome addition. Anyways, I'll be sticking with Maya Taqueria on Vanderbilt for now when I need my burrito fix, but I will certainly give El Barrio a second try in a few weeks. read more

The food is great and reasonably priced, so this should be my favorite place. They just added seamless, which means you can now get their awesome food without dealing with them - thank God. The people who work here are incompetent. The girl at the front counter never seems to know what's going on around her, and the staff frequently has personal conversations while ignoring customers. I have waited 25 minutes for just a smoothie while they stood around, and I watched the counter girl hang up the ringing phone three times. If you can order online, great. If not, do NOT bother. The worst tacos I've had in recent memory, I think, and I eat tacos really often. I've even enjoyed Chipotle more and I don't even like Chipotle. Ordered delivery, which came in a reasonable time, but the food was ice cold, like it had been sitting out for literally an hour. What kind of taco place delivers tacos that aren't wrapped in foil to keep the heat in? That's basically taco 101. On top of that, it was bland, the blue corn tortilla texture was off, the mango salsa was slimy and they forgot our chips and guac. They delivered the missing items to us in a reasonable amount of time but the guac was awful, like it was made from a mix. It was ice cold too so I suspect it wasn't fresh. Pretty bummed that my first delivery to my new place wasn't good. Won't be ordering from them again. read more

Second try. - Wait time was better - Burrito was solid, nothing great, nothing horrible. - They REALLY need to wrap it in tinfoil as someone previously mentioned, or even paper, mine wasnt wrapped in anything. Otherwise you get home with it, try to pick it up, and it just opens and falls apart. - Check your bag before leaving. My chips came without salsa. Too late as I was already home. - There's a charge for using a credit card. This is the first time I've experienced this anywhere. There are already 2 excellent Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood, but neither serves burritos so I was really looking forward to this opening. What a huge disappointment! The beef "bay burrito" was a flavorless, soggy mess of greasy, undercooked ground beef and unseasoned white rice (and none of the re-fried beans I ordered) with a tablespoon of mashed avocado at one end. It was so loosely and sloppily rolled that I couldn't pick it up and had to eat it (as much of it as I could stomach) with a knife and fork. The salsa tasted of tinny canned tomatoes and the tortilla chips where straight out of a bag. The tacos my partner ordered were equally bland and all was barely warm, even though we opened our takeout not 5 minutes after it left the kitchen. Yuck. read more

Don't go there if you're actually hungry and expect to be treated properly. I asked the girl at the register what the ingredients were in the Tex Mex Grilled Chicken Fajita. She told me to look at the menu for more information, information which wasn't provided on the menu either. Guessing she was new, but the guy "supervising" her didn't offer any help either. Somebody in the place has to know how to make the burrito if it's on your menu, just go ask! However, he was great at smiling and taking peoples money. So, 5 stars for that. Beyond that, it took nearly 40 minutes to get my sub par burrito. The fact that it fell apart shortly after I began eating it was somewhat of a blessing since it was dry and flavorless. It would have been beneficial if they listed that on the menu. I understand they just opened, but a simple "sorry for the wait" would have gone a long way in me giving them another chance to get there stuff right. -8:45 PM: Placed order by phone... Spicy Blackened Grilled Steak Burrito and Tex Mex Grilled Shrimp Fajita Burrito. I'm told they would be ready in 30 minutes. -9:20 PM: I arrive to pick up order. They can't seem to find it and ask me to wait off to the side. I'm told it will only take a few minutes. -9:25 PM: Employee tells me that they are out of shrimp (40 minutes after having ordered it). I ask for a Tex Mex Grilled Chicken Fajita Burrito instead. -9:30 PM: Person who came in after me and placed order at register receives their order and leaves. -9:38 PM: I receive my food and head home, nearly an hour after I ordered by phone. At home I realize that they charged me for the more expensive shrimp burrito - which they didn't have - rather than the chicken. The burritos are wrapped poorly and fall apart as soon as we pick them up. The salsa tastes like cheap tomato paste, the kind you use as a base in spaghetti sauce. The rice and beans, which comprise 95% of the burrito, are flavorless. I really want this place to succeed; there are so few good burrito places so close. But without some proper management and some improvements to their flavors, I don't see how they can. On that note, I'll try them again soon and happily change my review accordingly. read more

Went here for the first time the other day, even though it's sort of hard to miss with the murals etc. I got a spicy chicken burrito which was pretty good, though something about it was a little bland. But as the menu claimed, it was quite large and to me, the perfect size. A good deal for $8. Inside is fairly clean, but not exactly a place where I wanted to stay and eat, maybe it was the lighting, or the general lack of seating. I think what made the whole experience better was how nice everyone is that works there. Maybe it's just me, but good service and good food always beats out lousy service and awesome food. read more

Chicken verde burrito is delicious! Rice is flavorful, avocado is fresh, and chicken is moist with a nice crunchy sear on it. It's not a "mission-style" burrito, but it may be as close as NY Mexican food gets. J'approve! read more

Came here with my girlfriend while we were walking home along Franklin Ave. I got a naked grilled chicken bay burrito and she got a vegan mission burrito. We took them back to my place to eat. Mine was tasty--not out of this world, but decent--but hers was 90% rice and beans. They skimped SUPER hard on everything else, i.e. including only the tiniest spot of guac, except for the vegan sour cream which was completely missing. For $7 and a 15-20 minute wait, that's ridiculous. read more

The Grilled Chicken Bay burrito (Chicken, Rice, Beans, Cheese, Guacamole, Sour Cream & Salsa) was good-smelling and good tasting. The chicken was tasty and well-seasoned, and there was plenty o' sour cream. The staff honored my request for guac on the side and answered questions patiently. The ingredients tasted fine but all the specialty stuff was at the bottom of the burrito. Even with that said I would have given it 4 stars but they forgot to give me the guacamole I paid for.
