It's not a restaurant. This guy, the owner, puts so much attention into the food that it's more of a stage. Passion is a cute word but obsession might be an insult. The texture the temperature the portioning and consistency, is remarkable and is an achievement. The preparation and care for ingredients is impressive and unexpected. This is the go-to place for my family -- my children are constantly clamoring for El Barrio, and my husband and I order from here even when the kids aren't around! I am obsessed with the vegan spare ribs (NOT the eponymous burrito but the spare ribs as protein in the Mission Burrito -- pro tip!) and we also love the spicy Jalisco tofu and the impossible burrito. I was excited for a burrito place in Crown Heights. We already have great Mexican food (Chavelas, Taqueria de Los Muertos, Gueros, Kimchi Taco, etc.), but more never hurts and I'm all for variety. However, El Barrio was a complete let down. Like other reviewers, I found: A soggy burrito. Did they even try draining their ingredients? It also started to fall apart almost immediately due to a sloppy wrap job. Maybe they should just resort to foil. Super bland food. My burrito was basically all rice, beans, and chicken. I couldn't even taste the onions, peppers, pico, guac, etc. that were supposed to be there. The nachos were a congealed mess of store bought chips and half melted cheddar cheese. Even that canned cheese from movie theater nachos would have been an improvement. Terrible service. It's not that they aren't nice or eager, they're just incompetent. Maybe none of them have ever worked in a restaurant, and maybe this is a kink that they'll work out, but it really shouldn't take ten minutes of being on hold to order two burritos and a side. A confusing menu. Why do they have to have a hundred menu items, when all they offer is ten ingredients slightly rearranged? I don't even think they know what they have. I ordered a side of jalepenos for my nachos and instead found extra jalapenos in my burrito (not that I minded, something needed to flavor that baby sized mush ball of rice). Such a dissapointment and I didnt even have expectations. In regard to service, the girl was really slow in taking the order but even slower in counting the change. She was either out of it or this might be her first job. I ordered the chipotle tofu burrito which came with a salad. They packaged it all together so half the burrito was soggy on the outside from the salad juices. In attempting to pick it up, I realized it wasn't really wrapped. It was folded together at the ends and that was a failure. The burrito was grossly wet with a dominant flavor of canned tomato sauce. Not yum. There was no sour cream, no seasonings, no pico, just tofu chunks in some canned sauce, brown rice and leaky refried beans. The tortilla was bland. So bland. It felt and tasted like everything was bought canned. I took it back with no interest in eating from this spot. Tip to Barrio Burritos: include all the ingredients you list on the menu in the order. Press your tofu. Flavor your rice. Try good salsa so you can begin to emulate it. read more

Barrio, what happened? I went the first week this place opened, and was SO happy- food was cheap ($6-8 for a giant burrito? Yes please), tasted pretty good, and service was fast. Fast forward a month or two... burritos are now 90% rice, lacking moisture, and are not actually wrapped to be handheld burritos- my boyfriend's dissolved into a sad pile of tortilla and rice and one or two beans when picked up. They haven't lost my business, as their prices are still great, and their burrito bowls are decently tasty. However, I suspect that Barrio will need to step up their game significantly if another burrito -maker realizes that the demand in the neighborhood for burritos remains high. read more

Wow. Terrible terrible food. I was really excited for a burrito spot to open but it was really nasty. Usually even a bad burrito can still hit the spot but this place is beyond bad. The burrito was soggy and tasteless. Rice was tasteless, beans were tasteless, and there was not enough cheese and no sour cream. The tortilla tasted like it hadn't been heated and the salsa was definitely out of a bottle (or a can) and not spicy or flavorful. The chips were the lowest quality, the kind you get with cheese sauce at the movie theater or a ball game. The woman at the register taking orders was also rude and unfriendly. No much else to say. I really don't want to dislike this place but I just found it really disappointing. Tonight was my second time there as I hoped the brand new place issues would have ironed themselves out. I was SO EXCITED when it opened and am ardent lover of the taco and Mexican food in general. Like many others, I've now ordered from five different sections of the menu and found the food to be bland and not very fresh tasting. From the bagged stale tasting chips and fake cheese dip to the packaged salsas and guac, Nothing was quite right. I found the chicken and steak to be tender and well cooked but flavorless. I wasn't sure what To think because the counter folks are pleasant and I like the idea, but after seeing the owner? Manager? On here responding to folks and not acknowledging real faults in food preparation and arguing instead, I don't think I'll be returning. If things here are homemade, they don't taste like it so I hope they address their recipe and supplier issues. When you do, invite your poor reviewers back for a taco. My girlfriend and I just moved to the neighborhood. I was so excited to see a burrito spot so close to our apartment. Unfortunately, to cut the story short, it wasn't meant to be. Even before we got our first order my dream of a late night "go-to" Mexican place was falling apart. The staff seemed incredibly friendly, but were flustered and distracted with just a few people in line. It was completely disorganized and I was seeing people that ordered after me with much bigger orders getting their food faster. It took more about 20 min for us to get two burritos. I had the steak burrito and it was just ok. My girlfriend got the chicken verde burrito--bland. I decided to give them another chance and a couple days after. It was empty with one person in line--I thought, "there's no way it'll be slow now." I ordered nachos rancheros and a quesadilla. When I sat down to wait for my food I overheard the girl at the front calling a customer to apologize that an order was late and that it was going to be another 10-15 minutes before they could deliver. 10 minutes later, I noticed food on the counter, but assumed it was the food meant for the late delivery. I was half right. Half of the order was for delivery, the other half was my order--sitting, getting cold. When I finally got my food and opened up the containers at home, the food was lukewarm. The container holding the nachos looked like it was about to explode and the quesadilla had soooo much cheese. It looked like how my college self would make nachos and quesadillas--without restraint. I appreciate them giving me so much food, but man, it was overkill. When I opened the nachos it looked like a shepherds pie. There was so much cheese and ground beef. I had to dig in two inches down to find tortilla chips and when I found them, they were soggy. SOGGY! That's rule number one for good nachos--always have crunchy tortilla chips, even if they're store bought. It may as well have been a shepherds pie. All in all... the staff seemed nice and well intentioned, but the disorganization, the slow service, and the lackluster food killed my late night Mexican food dreams. read more

The basic takeaway is an inexplicable use of obviously low-quality ingredients (very likely corner-store bought) and a menu design that detours taste-- Bland is terming it too kind. Instead of passing Mission tortillas off, they should have contacted me to let me know they were 86 (ran out of) soft-shell tacos. But whatever vendor issues they've had with their chips, they are still having them. It's a perfect spot just off the subway (or running route) where you can get a reliably tasty meal. I usually get the beef chili burrito and beef chili side. They really hit the spot. The burrito has a lot of flavor and they don't skimp on the ingredients (or the complimentary chips!). I really like those two things, but they have a huge menu that probably deserves some more exploration. I probably eat here once a week or two. At first, service was slow, but they've clearly focused on fixing that and are now pretty quick to get you out of the door. (That said, I don't mind waiting that much because they always have solid music on rotation.) The staff is also super nice! read more

Just read through all the previous yelp reviews and I am surprised! I ordered the Chicken Mission Bay burrito and I thought it was delicious! Coming from California, I've had burritos from El Farolito and other mexican places in San Francisco. The chicken was very seasoned and tender. I like how guacamole and sour cream is added inside, usually these cost extra. Plus, the burrito is HUGE. As far as rice/bean to meat ratio, I'd say I had a good amount of chicken per bite. The owner must be reading the previous reviews and is actively trying to improve his business. To those hating on the salad - stop complaining, it's complimentary! I actually like the lettuce and pico de gallo fresh on the side rather than them meshed with my burrito. I'd say give it a try! I'm going to come back and try the tilapia mango salsa wrap next time. Personally not a big fan of their burritos (my boyfriend is though) It's across the street from my apartment, so I go pretty often, like a few times a month or more. Pick up service guy is always really nice, and they have Mexican Coke and tres leches cake (a vegan version too) I'm pretty happy with their quesadillas, steak one was amazing! read more

Been waiting for a solid burrito place to pop up in the barrio! My girlfriend and I popped in for dinner, after reading an article about the opening, and we were glad we did. Solid options to please all types of folks - veg, vegan, and carnivore options. We got the Grilled Chicken Bay Burrito and the Naked (sans tortilla) Spicy Blackened Grilled Chicken and both were delicious. It took 10 minutes to get our food, we picked up some micro-batch bloody mary mix while we were there, and headed out. My biggest qualm with burritos, generally, is improper mixing of ingredients - i.e. 1/4 chicken, 1/4 beans, 1/4 rice, 1/4 cheese, with individual bites of each. The Bay Burrito was mixed well, still hot by the time we got home a few avenues down, and the Burrito Salad was scrumptrulescent and well spiced. Here's the thing: no business, food joint or otherwise, is perfect right off the bat. Kinks need to be worked out to figure out the best way to serve customers. The service, however is friendly, the food is good (and priced right), and it's been open for just a few days. I'm looking forward to coming back again for a late night eat, or something to give me a food baby when I feel the hangries coming on.
