I genuinely love the vibe of this place. The food is great, the server was amazing as well. We were able to walk in and get seating for 6 and a toddler quickly. The server was very accommodating with switching back and forth between English and Spanish for for those who spoke one or the other. He was also able to alter a meal for my toddler who tends to be a bit picky. The drinks were tasty and not too strong. This restaurant was just what we needed on a Friday night in San Juan and I would recommend it to anyone in the area if you're looking for some authentic food, fairly inexpensively. read more

I got pulled into this place by the hostess who was actively encouraging streetgoers to come on in and marketing it as "The Best Authentic Food in Puerto Rico." Super friendly service and I got a great spot at the table right by the open front window for people-watching. I was hungry but I didn't want something TOO heavy, to which the hostess recommended I just chill with an appetizer. I ended up getting the mahi-mahi bites with a side of rice and beans. I will say the mahi-mahi bites, while incredibly filling, could have been more flavorful, but they did the job, and the rice and beans were top notch delicious. Pretty good! We came here on a Sunday evening and they were able to seat our large party immediately, without a reservation. El Campeon had a large selection of flavored mojitos and I picked the coconut one (good but on the sweeter side!). For food, we ordered a ton, including their mofongo (delicious), wings (pretty good, but nothing special), and chicken tostones rellenos (fantastic). I will start by saying the food here is actually really good and delicious but the service wasn't all that great. They were super friendly and helpful, however I got the wrong food and had to send it back. I wasn't upset, just a little disappointed because I worked in this industry for many years. The shrimp Mofongo with the garlic aioli sauce is a must try on the menu. I wanted to try the red snapper but they were out! Bummer. Found it by accident walking by the square, it looked open and roomy and bright and we were hungry... Win! The staff were friendly and inviting, the guy at the door was super nice, and the food... just wow. I had the mofongo with all the different meats, my sweetie had the one with shrimp. While it was unclear exactly who our servers were, that all were kind. We ordered drinks (which everyone liked) and our meals. This is where the cons began. It took a little less than an hour for our food to arrive after the appetizers. So, let's back up. The appetizers were ok. I specifically had the shrimp empadillas. They were small and flavorful. The entrees were ok. Everyone seemed to have something missing from their meal, ie salad dressing, a small amount of seafood in a seafood paella, etc. All in all, the food was good. Most expensive and worst food in Puerto Rico. We have been here 14 days so far and have eaten food in Rincon, Ponce, and Vieques and haven't stumbled across anything this terrible. The fried stuffed plantains were burned. I should have taken more pictures. My two daughters didn't eat any of their food (3 meat paella). It was dry and tasteless. We told the servers and they did nothing about it, just said sorry, don't order that next time. Hopefully this is warning enough to keep someone else safe from terrible food. $220 for six people. They have done a nice job with the decorating. Big mural on the back sets a good mood. The lighting is good (I suggest dimming the lights a bit during dinner}. Mehh.... We couldn't find any other places and In hindsight I wish we kept looking. The waitstaff was really kind and seated us fast, and got us drinks. The mohitos we average, nothing to write home about. It took us about an hour to come out and after waiting that long we were just glad to have food. The food was fine, but waiting so long for it to come out really put a bad taste in my mouth. We saw two large groups leave before us because they were upset about not getting food. After getting the check ,the waiter removed our drinks from the bill as a courtesy for the long wait. Seems stressful working here, we felt bad for the waitstaff. WOW... what a great place. We didn't have reservations and the streets were packed on a Tuesday night. We had 6-of us at the table. They told us food would be longer than usual because they were busy, and that was nice know. We had drinks, chatted and waited for food. A group of friends and myself came to have dinner here after La Vergüenza de PR was extremely full and had a long wait time and i'm glad we did! They seated us right away and got started taking our orders. I tried the alcapurrias which were delicious and had the mofongo de carne. The mofongo was really good but for some reason the smell with the meat and platanos made me a little nauseous. I tried their passionfruit juice which was also good, not too sweet but not too bitter. Our waitress made sure we were always good and checked on us periodically in case we wanted to order anything else. Bathroom is clean and all staff wear masks. The area where the restaurant is located is really nice and within walking distance to little souvenir stores and other places to eat. Beware that parking in this area is a little tough but there's a parking lot that's about 5-7min walking distance for $3. read more

A "must go" restaurant if you're in the old San Juan area. The place is super clean and beautifully decorated in the inside with live music and the staff is super sweet, especially Nancy. I would say the best drinks on the menu or are flamenco and the una noche en San Juan. refreshing, great ingredients, and not too sweet. For appetizers we order the Tostones filled with Churrasco and the empanadas with shrimp. All delicious. For dinner we ordered the chicharrones de Pollo, the bifongo with churrasco, Mofongo with chicken shrimp, and the meat risotto. They were all delicious but the meat risotto was insane. Huge plate with very generous portions with pork, steak, and sausage. It was extremely flavorful and everyone wanted several bites. Fantastic meal. We got there early because service in other restaurants has been slow, but the service was excellent and speedy. Both the chicken and churrasco mofongo was delicious.
